The special area of conservation Montesinho/Nogueira (PTCON0002) is a key area for conserving biodiversity in the Iberian Peninsula. Covering an area of approximately 1081 km² in the northeast of Portugal mainland, the PTCON0002 is home to a wide range of biodiversity, including several endemic and endangered species, and priority habitats. Despite its ecological significance and importance for conservation, there is a lack of publicly available biodiversity data, which urges the need to create a comprehensive and up-to-date biodiversity dataset for the PTCON0002.To bridge the knowledge gap on biodiversity in PTCON0002, we undertook a thorough data collection process, such as species occurrence records and conservation status information at regional (Portugal) and European levels, from multiple sources. We collected and compiled this information for PTCON0002 resulting in a total of 31 871 records with 1 312 documented species. In addition, we developed an easy-to-navigate web-based geographic information system (Web GIS). In this article, we present an in-depth report on the process of compiling and preparing data, as well as the development and design of our Web GIS to increase awareness and enhance understanding of the importance of preserving biodiversity in PTCON0002.

The estimation of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) from the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and a standard crop coefficient (Kc) in olive orchards requires that the latter be adjusted to planting density and height. The use of the dual Kc approach may be the best solution because the basal crop coefficient Kcb represents plant transpiration and the evaporation coefficient reproduces the soil coverage conditions and the frequency of wettings. To support related computations for a super intensive olive orchard, the model SIMDualKc was adopted because it uses the dual Kc approach. Alternatively, to consider the physical characteristics of the vegetation, the satellite-based surface energy balance model METRIC™ – Mapping EvapoTranspiration at high Resolution using Internalized Calibration – was used to estimate ETc and to derive crop coefficients. Both approaches were compared in this study. SIMDualKc model was calibrated and validated using sap-flow measurements of the transpiration for 2011 and 2012. In addition, eddy covariance estimation of ETc was also used. In the current study, METRIC™ was applied to Landsat images from 2011 to 2012. Adaptations for incomplete cover woody crops were required to parameterize METRIC. It was observed that ETc obtained from both approaches was similar and that crop coefficients derived from both models showed similar patterns throughout the year. The growth in data availability and in the number of users from non-spatial disciplines has increased the concern with spatial data management and spatial data quality. This reality contextualizes the need and importance of data quality management throughout the spatial data cycle related to data editing and sharing in the context of knowledge networks. The development of standard concepts, procedures and tools may foster important advances in the improvement of spatial dataset production, use and management practices. The implementation of environmental monitoring programs implies a growing number and diversity of users with specific capabilities and responsibilities. In this context, spatial data quality evaluation and management promotes communication, optimizes processes of analysis and spatial modelling, and in this sense improves research and political and technical decisionmaking and action. This paper focuses on the methods and tools currently available to evaluate the external quality of datasets for environmental and ecological monitoring. A novel framework is presented that allows integrating and interconnecting spatial data quality evaluation with metadata geoportals in WebGIS platforms, facilitating evaluation by users with often limited expertise in this field. The advances achieved in this research highlight the relevance of developing capacities for different users to improve data collection, data models, spatial data processing and modelling, but also the need to inform and report on spatial data quality using adequate tools.

Universidade de Lisboa O balanço hídrico do solo em culturas lenhosas é por vezes difícil de calcular com recurso a modelos de estimativa, dado estas culturas terem geralmente um sistema radicular profundante. É comum o sistema radicular destas espécies, nomeadamente em clima mediterrânico, terem uma profundidade maior que a profundidade de controlo dos equipamentos utilizados para realizar medições de teor de água no solo. Neste estudo foram utilizados dados de teor de água no solo obtidos em Pacheco (1989). Estes dados foram medidos numa vinha não regada até uma profundidade de 1,85 metros, o que melhora significamente as condições de utilização de modelos de estimativa do balanço hídrico. A diferença que pode ocorrer entre o volume de solo amostrado e aquele efetivamente explorado pelas plantas pode introduzir erros na modelação. A evapotranspiração da vinha (ETc) foi estimada com recurso aos dados da evapotranspiração de referência e do coeficiente cultural dual. Para este cálculo foram consideradas características da vinha, como a altura e a densidade das plantas que variam ao longo do ciclo cultural anual. Considerou-se estes fatores por serem determinantes na transpiração das plantas e na evaporação a partir do solo. A aplicação desta abordagem (coeficiente cultural dual) foi feita com recurso ao modelo SIMDualKc o que permitiu obter valores estimados dos coeficientes culturais e de ETc. Para obter valores de fração de solo coberto pela cultura e, consequentemente valores de coeficientes culturais foram utilizados dados obtidos através de imagens de satélite. Desta forma foram obtidos valores de coeficiente cultural (Kc) para a vinha em estudo. A calibração do modelo SIMDualKc foi feita através de medições de teor de água no solo com recurso a sonda de neutrões, tendo sido também testado com uma série de dados adicionais. Adicionalmente foi calculado o Kc através de abordagem baseada em índices de vegetação gerados a partir de imagens de satélite e comparados os resultados com os valores de Kc obtidos através do SIMDualKc. Foi possível concluir que há concordância, no ano de estudo, entre os valores de água no solo simulados através do SIMDualKc e medidos em campo. Verificou-se também concordância entre os valores de Kc obtidos com o modelo SIMDualKc e os valores obtidos através da análise de imagens de satélite. A eficiência estatística para a comparação entre os valores de água no solo simulados e medidos foi de 0,93 e o coeficiente de determinação foi de 1,0. A eficiência estatística para a comparação entre o Kc simulado e calculado pela análise de imagens de satélite foi de 0,74 e o coeficiente de determinação foi de 0,98. Ficou assim comprovada a possibilidade de calibração do modelo para estimar a ETc duma vinha não regada, em condições mediterrânicas, utilizando dados do teor de água do solo até elevada profundidade N/A
