Abstract

In a context of a continuous digitalisation of processes, organisations must deal with the challenge of detecting anomalies that can reveal suspicious activities upon an increasing volume of data. To pursue this goal, audit engagements are carried out regularly, and internal auditors and purchase specialists are constantly looking for new methods to automate these processes. This work proposes a methodology to prioritise the investigation of the cases detected in two large purchase datasets from real data. The goal is to contribute to the effectiveness of the companies' control efforts and to increase the performance of carrying out such tasks. A comprehensive Exploratory Data Analysis is carried out before using unsupervised Machine Learning techniques addressed to detect anomalies. A univariate approach has been applied through the z-Score index and the DBSCAN algorithm, while a multivariate analysis is implemented with the k-Means and Isolation Forest algorithms, and the Silhouette index, resulting in each method having a transaction candidates' proposal to be reviewed. An ensemble prioritisation of the candidates is provided jointly with a proposal of explicability methods (LIME, Shapley, SHAP) to help the company specialists in their understanding.

Abstract

In this paper, we first summarize the existing algorithms for computing all the generalized asymptotes of a plane algebraic curve implicitly or parametrically defined. From these previous results, we derive a method that allows to easily compute the whole branch and all the generalized asymptotes of a special curve defined in n-dimensional space by a parametrization that is not necessarily rational. So, some new concepts and methods are established for this type of curves. Abstract

In this paper, we introduce the notion of infinity branches as well as approaching curves. We present some properties which allow us to obtain an algorithm that compares the behavior of two implicitly defined algebraic plane curves at the infinity. As an important result, we prove that if two plane algebraic curves have the same asymptotic behavior, the Hausdorff distance between them is finite.

Abstract

Reliable quantitative vegetation reconstructions for Europe during the Holocene are crucial to improving our understanding of landscape dynamics, making it possible to assess the past effects of environmental variables and land-use change on ecosystems and biodiversity, and mitigating their effects in the future. We present here the most spatially extensive and temporally continuous pollen-based reconstructions of plant cover in Europe (at a spatial resolution of 1° × 1°) over the Holocene (last 11.7 ka BP) using the ‘Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites’ (REVEALS) model. This study has three main aims. First, to present the most accurate and reliable generation of REVEALS reconstructions across Europe so far. This has been achieved by including a larger number of pollen records compared to former analyses, in particular from the Mediterranean area. Second, to discuss methodological issues in the quantification of past land cover by using alternative datasets of relative pollen productivities (RPPs), one of the key input parameters of REVEALS, to test model sensitivity. Finally, to validate our reconstructions with the global forest change dataset. The results suggest that the RPPs.st1 (31 taxa) dataset is best suited to producing regional vegetation cover estimates for Europe. These reconstructions offer a long-term perspective providing unique possibilities to explore spatial-temporal changes in past land cover and biodiversity.

Abstract

Precipitation is a key climate parameter of vegetation and ecosystems in the Iberian Peninsula. Here, we use a regional pollen–climate calibration model and fossil pollen data from eight sites from the Atlantic coast to southern Spain to provide quantitative reconstructions of annual precipitation trends and excursions and their regional patterns for the last 11 700 years. The Early Holocene (11 700 to 11 000 cal. a BP) was characterized by high precipitation values followed by a slowly declining trend until about 9000 cal. a BP in the south and about 8000 cal. a BP in the north. From 8000 to 6000 cal. a BP the reconstructed precipitation values are the highest in most records, especially in those located in the Mediterranean climatic region in the southern part of the peninsula, with maximum values nearly 100% higher than the modern reconstructed values. The results suggest a declining precipitation during the Late Holocene in the south, with a positive excursion at around 2500 cal. a BP, while in the north precipitation remained high until 500 cal. a BP. However, the Late Holocene climate reconstructions in the Iberian Peninsula are biased by intensifying human impact on vegetation. The statistical time series analyses using SiZer technique do not indicate any statistically significant high-frequency drought events in the region. In general, our results suggest regional differences in the precipitation patterns between the northern and southern parts of the peninsula, with a more distinct Middle Holocene period of high humidity in the south.

However, despite advances in ancient DNA research that conclusively identified the pandemic’s causative agent (bacterium Yersinia pestis), our knowledge of the Black Death remains limited, based primarily on qualitative remarks in medieval written sources available for some areas of Western Europe. Here, we remedy this situation by applying a pioneering new approach, ‘big data palaeoecology’, which, starting from palynological data, evaluates the scale of the Black Death’s mortality on a regional scale across Europe. We collected pollen data on landscape change from 261 radiocarbon-dated coring sites (lakes and wetlands) located across 19 modern-day European countries. We used two independent methods of analysis to evaluate whether the changes we see in the landscape at the time of the Black Death agree with the hypothesis that a large portion of the population, upwards of half, died within a few years in the 21 historical regions we studied. While we can confirm that the Black Death had a devastating impact in some regions, we found that it had negligible or no impact in others. These inter-regional differences in the Black Death’s mortality across Europe demonstrate the significance of cultural, ecological, economic, societal and climatic factors that mediated the dissemination and impact of the disease. Results show (1) that this site hosts the oldest modern human presence recorded to date in central Iberia, associated to pre-Solutrean cultural traditions around 26,000 years ago, and (2) that this presence occurred during Heinrich Stadial 2 within harsh environmental conditions. These findings demonstrate that this area of the Iberian hinterland was recurrently occupied regardless of climate and environmental variability, thus challenging the widely accepted hypothesis that ecological risk hampered the human settlement of the Iberian interior highlands since the first arrival of modern humans to Southwest Europe.

Abstract

Background Aim Previous reports have been analyzed the prevalence/association of apical periodontitis (AP) with systemic diseases. The present study aims to analyze the prevalence of healthy/diseased periapex and endodontic treatments in patients with Multiple Myeloma (MM) and compare the results with those of control subjects. Material and Methods Methodology Panoramic radiographs of 50 individuals with MM were evaluated and compared with 50 controls that were sex and age matched exactly with the diseased group. Radiographic analysis was performed by 2 two experienced endodontists under standardized conditions. The periapical status (presence or not of AP) was assessed using the periapical index (PAI). Data included systemic health, technical quality of root fillings, total number of teeth, quality of restoration, and periapical status. Statistical evaluation of differences between groups included used chi-squared tests and Fisher’s exact tests. Results The prevalence of root canal-treated teeth was 10.11% in the MM group and 12.05% in the control group (p=0.90). The average root canal-treated teeth in the test group was 2,34 and 2.48 in the control group, where the difference was statistically significant (p=0.05). AP in 1 or more teeth was found in 86 % and in 78% of the patients in the MM and the control groups, respectively. When analyzed by subject, there was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of AP (p>0.72). Similarly there was also no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of PA (p=0.85), when analyzed by tooth, AP was found in 63.2% and 62.9% in MM and control groups. Conclusions The presence of AP and endodontic treatment was not significantly different in individuals with MM compared with control subjects. Future studies are needed to elucidate and confirm the association between MM and AP. Key words:Apical periodontitis, multiple myeloma, endodontics, root canal treatment, systemic disease.

Abstract

The NeoArabia project tries to understand how environmental, social, economic and technological factors work in concert to influence settlement and abandonment along a latitudinal transect of 1200 km from UAE to southern Oman. This region was affected by wide north–south variations in the Indo‐Arabian monsoon, marine upwelling activity and eustatic variations in the Mid‐Holocene. On the local settlement scale, this transect is based on fine stratigraphic excavations and permits the reconstruction of the site formation processes and site catchment analysis. A large number of studies have been conducted on the Ruways‐1 site, focusing on a deep stratified sequence corresponding to three millennia of occupation. These studies include on‐site climate‐environmental signal analysis, local palaeogeography and environmental reconstruction, reservoir effect studies, typo‐technological studies, palaeoeconomic strategies, anthropological studies, sclerochronological studies and, finally, site formation processes, the understanding of which makes it possible to explain the potential and limits of the archaeological excavation. The first results confirm the richness of these archaeological archives for documenting the socio‐environmental dynamics, but also the richness of its complex sedimentary structure and the importance of conducting fine and multidisciplinary excavations to answer questions about the rhythms and functions of occupations and the causalities of socio‐environmental changes. Abstract

High-resolution pollen, macrofossil and charcoal data, combined with multivariate analysis, were used to reconstruct Holocene vegetation and fire dynamics at Manaderos. The studied mire is located in a highly valued location in the supra-Mediterranean belt of the Gredos Range (central Iberian Peninsula). The record started at 1260 calendar years (cal yrs) BP, according to eight radiocarbon dates, with the occurrence of an open Quercus pyrenaica forest and Pinus nigra stands. The palynological data show a dramatic change ∼380 cal yrs BP, when the oak forest was progressively replaced by a maritime pine one. The interpretation of this record is related to an increase in agricultural and livestock activities and changes in the role of fire, thus Pyrenean oak canopy was consumed by fires providing openings for Pinus pinaster, better adapted to fire. The results are compared with other sequences from the Spanish Central System in order to better understand the past dynamics of the main forest constituents and to provide a critical view of the role of fire, anthropic dynamics and climatic events. Abstract

Con el propósito de evaluar el humus de lombriz roja californiana Eisenia foetida como biofertilizante para el crecimiento poblacional de dos microalgas marinas, fueron cultivadas Tetraselmis tetrathele y Chaetoceros muelleri en agua de mar enriquecida con cuatro diluciones (50; 200; 350 y 500 mL) de extracto líquido de humus. La especie T. tetrathele, cultivada en la dilución de 200 mL, no mostró diferencias con el patrón medio f/2 Guillard para los parámetros: concentración celular, velocidad de crecimiento, tiempo de duplicación y productividad. C. muelleri cultivado en el mismo biofertilizante a las diluciones antes descritas, mostró un comportamiento productivo inferior al patrón, por lo que fueron evaluadas dos nuevas diluciones (550 y 650 mL). Las concentraciones celulares alcanzadas con 550 y 650 mL del fertilizante orgánico y el patrón, no mostraron diferencias (p > 0,05) hasta el tercer día del cultivo, sin embargo, al evaluar el indicador productividad se obtuvieron los mejores valores con 550 mL del extracto líquido de humus. Por los resultados obtenidos en este estudio con el biofertilizante y su bajo costo de producción se concluyó que resulta una alternativa viable para la producción de las microalgas C. muelleri y T. tetrathele hasta volúmenes de 2 L. To evaluate the humus of of red worm californian Eisenia foetida were cultured microalgaes Tetraselmis tetrathele and Chaetoceros muelleri in seawater enriched with four dilutions (50; 200; 350 and 500 mL) of liquid extract of humus of red worm californian Eisenia foetida. The T. tetrathele specie, grown at a dilution of 200 mL, showed no differences with the standard f/2 Guillard for the parameters: cell concentration, growth rate, doubling time and productivity. C. muelleri grown in the same biofertilizer to dilutions as described above, showed a lower productive performance pattern, so that two further dilutions were evaluated (550 and 650 mL). The cell concentrations reached with 550 and 650 mL of organic fertilizer and the pattern did not differ (p > 0,05) until the third day of culture, however, in assessing the productivity indicator the best values were obtained with 550 mL of liquid extract humus. From the results obtained in this study with the alternative means and low cost of production is concluded that it is a viable alternative for the production of microalgaes C. muelleri and T. tetrathele up to volumes of 2 L. El trabajo que figura a continuación trata de ofrecer una visión sintética sobre la historia de la vegetación, la dinámica antrópica y la evolución climática del período protohistórico en un sector muy concreto del valle del Ebro, el Territorio Histórico de Álava. Para ello, se ha empleado una herramienta paleoambiental de gran interés, el estudio de los microfósiles polínicos y no polínicos preservados en depósitos de diferente tipología de la Edad del Bronce y la Edad del Hierro, con el objetivo de aportar datos y reflexiones a diferentes problemáticas relativas a los cambios culturales.------------------This paper shows a synthectic view of the vegetation history, the anthropogenic dymamic and the climatic evolution of the Protohistoric period in a very specific sector of the Ebro Valley, the present province of Alava. To this end, we have used a palaeoenvironmental tool of great interest, the study of pollen, spores and non‐pollen palynomorphs preserved in several different deposits of the Bronze Age and Iron Age, in order to provide data and reflections to different problems related with cultural changes.

Abstract

Una realidad bien conocida respecto a la población de edad avanzada en España es que las mujeres son mayoritarias en su composición. Las consecuencias, escasamente apreciadas, tienen sin embargo gran importancia para la comprensión cabal del actual proceso de envejecimiento demográfico y de sus consecuencias sobre el conjunto del sistema social. En primer lugar, y en el terreno estrictamente demográfico, se expondrán las causas del desequilibrio en el efectivo poblacional femenino y masculino, y sus efectos acumulativos en edades avanzadas. Se hará también un análisis de las características de género diferenciales en las generaciones implicadas: relación con la actividad, ingresos, patrimonio, estado civil, corresidencia y estructuras familiares, nivel de instrucción y nivel de salud. El cuadro así dibujado evidencia lo erróneo de un análisis de las características sociales y económicas de la población de edad avanzada y de los efectos del envejecimiento demográfico para el sistema social en su conjunto, cuando la imagen que se maneja es la del hombre jubilado. Se argumentará que esta imagen es responsable en buena medida de las alarmas suscitadas en torno al tema y de la visión asistencial y protectora sobre la vejez. Un reenfoque que haga honor al carácter fundamentalmente femenino de dicho colectivo es posible incluso al margen de las reivindicaciones y los estudios de género, más centrados en las mujeres jóvenes, en edad laboral. Sin embargo sí debe servir para relativizar la importancia de la "no contribución productiva" de nuestros mayores, habida cuenta de las muchas otras funciones económicas, sociales, familiares, intergeneracionales y de solidaridad basadas precisamente en las características propias de las mujeres pertenecientes a las generaciones que hoy superan los 60 años. Siendo atrevido, pretendo sostener que el envejecimiento demográfico no sólo no debe verse como un problema, sino que en muchos aspectos resulta sumamente funcional y favorable para una sociedad avanzada, y ello en buena parte gracias a que sus principales protagonistas son mujeres.

50. The potential role of collagen type VII in breast cancer proliferation.

Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Cancer cells can persist in a prolonged dormant state for years without any clinical evidence of disease creating an urgent need to better understand the molecular mechanisms leading to relapse. This study aimed to identify extracellular matrix (ECM) components associated with hypoxia-induced breast cancer dormancy. The effects of selected ECM proteins on breast cancer cell proliferation were analyzed, along with their correlation with established prognostic markers in human breast cancer tissue., Materials and Methods: Screening of extracellular matrix proteins was performed in hypoxia-induced dormant MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Proliferation of MCF-7 cells in vitro was subsequently determined in the presence of recombinant ColVII. Adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AdMSCs) subpopulation overexpressing ColVII were indirectly isolated by ColVII receptor integrin-α6 specific antibodies. AdMSCs- MCF-7 3D spheroid cultures were generated to model solid tumour conditions. In addition, the association between ColVII and various prognostic markers was evaluated in clinical samples of human breast cancer tissue., Results: Dormant MCF-7 cells showed an elevated expression of ColVII while MCF-7 cells cultured on ColVII exhibited reduced proliferation in vitro. In AdMSCs-MCF-7 3D spheroids, a reduced proliferation of MCF-7 cells was observed in Int-α6 + / ColVII high compared with Int-α6 -/ ColVII low AdMSCs spheroids. In human tissue, high ColVII expression correlated to several positive prognostic markers. Staining for Cytokeratin-5 revealed that ColVII high -expressing cells were predominantly myoepithelial cells., Conclusion: ColVII is associated with reduced proliferation of breast cancer cells in vitro. ColVII is strongly expressed in myoepithelial cells and in breast cancer tissue the high ColVII expression correlates with several well-known positive prognostic markers, highlighting its potential as a prognostic marker in breast cancer., (© 2024.
