While it is well‐accepted that predation plays a key role in shaping both size structure and species composition in natural ecosystems, fine‐scale variation in predation risk within ecosystems has been largely neglected. The objective of this study was to use normalised size spectra (NSS) to investigate whether small‐scale spatial variation in predation risk (by fish) can modulate zooplankton community structure at the within‐lake level in a small temperate lake.We tested the difference in the NSS between two hydrologically well‐connected basins of a lake exhibiting contrasting thermal regimes. The first is a well‐mixed shallow basin (max. depth 2.5 m) that is inaccessible to brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) during summer because the temperature is too warm. The second is a deeper basin (max. depth 18 m) offering a thermal refuge during summer because of lake stratification. As a consequence of these differences in fish accessibility, the fishless basin should contain larger and more abundant zooplankters, inducing a change in NSS slope and height.Our results showed that both the zooplankton size structure and taxonomic composition were distinct in the two basins, with a higher proportion of small individuals and a higher abundance of zooplankton in the shallow basin compared to the deep one. Furthermore, following cooling of the epilimnion in late summer, the zooplankton communities of both basins exhibited a clear shift in size structure and species composition: in autumn, there were smaller individuals and larger proportions of Bosminidae and Daphniidae compared to colonial rotifers than in summer. These results suggest a potential effect of the change in the spatial distribution of brook charr which feed preferentially on large individuals, reducing the average body size of the zooplankton community.Our results show that predation risk by fish can induce a spatial and temporal variation in zooplankton community structure within small temperate lake ecosystems exhibiting contrasted thermal regimes. Other potential predators also influenced the zooplankton community structure, creating a complex interplay that has to be taken into account to disentangle ecological processes and predict their future changes. 1. Species with distributions that span a broad range of latitudes may have populations that exhibit distinct life history traits associated with environmental gradients. The majority of previous studies have indicated a strong association between spawning site selection by brook trout ( Salvelinus fontinalis) and the presence of upwelling groundwater, but does this generalisation extend to the thermal regimes experienced at northern sites? 2. We investigated the role of hyporheic flow in redd site selection by brook trout in a relatively high-latitude boreal system. Hyporheic flows through streambed substratums can be dominated by groundwater or surface water and may be influenced by the presence of morphological features. For autumn spawners such as brook trout, embryos situated in microhabitats where hyporheic flow in the shallow substratum is groundwater dominant (i.e. warmer in winter) are likely to experience accelerated development rates relative to embryos in redds where there is downwelling surface water (i.e. colder in winter). 3. We measured vertical hydraulic gradients (VHG) at the microhabitat scale and spatial and temporal variation in upwelling/downwelling flow and thermal regimes in brook trout spawning/incubation habitats. Additionally, we noted the proximity of redd sites to stream morphological features (e.g. riffle crests). 4. Our results indicate that upwelling flow was not a decisive cue in redd site selection at the microhabitat scale (100 m) as an approximately equal number of redds were situated in microhabitats with upward flow as compared to microhabitats with downward flow through the redd. Redds situated on bedforms with convex longitudinal profiles (e.g. riffle crests, log steps) were associated with downward flow, whereas redds not immediately adjacent to these bedform features were associated with upward flow. Winter streambed temperatures confirmed that both sites with steady upwelling (i.e. warm incubation regime) and downwelling (i.e. cold incubation regime) were indeed selected by spawners. 5. Our observations that spawners utilised both cold-regime and warm-regime sites suggests the existence of distinct reproductive tactics related to hyporheic flow patterns in this boreal system. As temperature is the dominant factor controlling rates of embryonic development, the use of spawning microhabitats with distinct thermal regimes implies substantial differences in the timing of hatching and the phenology of emergence. Sedimentation during road construction is a human impact that threatens aquatic ecosystems. Despite a large body of literature on the effect of fine sediments on the initial developmental stages of fish, we do not know of any studies that have investigated the return of spawners to spawning grounds in streams impacted by sediment from road construction. The objective of this study was to quantify the return to spawning grounds of brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis at different stages of highway construction (before, during, and after construction). Redd counts were made at a fine spatial resolution (<0.5 m) over two consecutive years in 12 reaches distributed along a 115-km stretch of highway in the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve, Quebec. We found a significant decrease in redd counts in reaches affected by construction during the second year but no evidence of impacts in reaches affected by construction during the first year. A possible explanation is that sediment releases were well controlled during construction except after an extreme weather event occurring during the spawning season of the second year. However, we observed that a reach heavily impacted by sediments still supported high densities of spawners. Overall, we found a significant decrease in the absolute number of redd counts in the second year but strong consistency in the spatial distribution of the spawning sites, both within and among reaches and for all stages of highway construction and sediment loadings, which suggests that the return of spawners is more constrained by habitat variables than by sediment from highway construction.
