This special issue is dedicated to the syntax-prosody interface in non-canonical questions and originated in the international workshop Non-Canonical Questions at the Syntax-Prosody Interface, organised at the Université Paris Cité and held online in November 2020. Recent research has demonstrated that the phonology-syntax relation cannot solely account for prosodic structure, prosody being closely intertwined with discourse organisation, information structure and focus structure (Gussenhoven 1983, Féry 2001). Questions are a case in point, as they crucially call on the addressee before a proposition may be added to the common ground. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Recent empirical studies have highlighted the large degree of analytic flexibility in data analysis that can lead to substantially different conclusions based on the same data set. Thus, researchers have expressed their concerns that these researcher degrees of freedom might facilitate bias and can lead to claims that do not stand the test of time. Even greater flexibility is to be expected in fields in which the primary data lend themselves to a variety of possible operationalizations. The multidimensional, temporally extended nature of speech constitutes an ideal testing ground for assessing the variability in analytic approaches, which derives not only from aspects of statistical modeling but also from decisions regarding the quantification of the measured behavior. In this study, we gave the same speech-production data set to 46 teams of researchers and asked them to answer the same research question, resulting in substantial variability in reported effect sizes and their interpretation. Using Bayesian meta-analytic tools, we further found little to no evidence that the observed variability can be explained by analysts’ prior beliefs, expertise, or the perceived quality of their analyses. In light of this idiosyncratic variability, we recommend that researchers more transparently share details of their analysis, strengthen the link between theoretical construct and quantitative system, and calibrate their (un)certainty in their conclusions.

The study will investigate the processing of a non-native, L2-specific contrast by Norwegian learners of English at different levels (phonetic categorisation, phonological representations, lexical representations, and production). We will use (i) an ABX categorization task, (ii) the auditory event-related potential called the Mismatch Negativity (MMN), (iii) a lexical decision task and (iv) a picture-naming task, as well as measures of self-reported and objective (LexTALE) proficiency. Additionally, the MMN will serve to investigate phonological asymmetries and representations in the perception this L2-specific contrast. We will look at an L2-specific contrast (/s/ vs /z/) and a contrast that exists in L1 and L2 (/t/ vs /d/).

LANGUAGE ability , *PHONOLOGICAL decoding , *BILINGUALISM , *EPISODIC memory , *INDIVIDUAL differences , *READING - Abstract
Sentence reading involves constant competition between lexical candidates. Previous research with monolinguals has shown that the neighbours of a read word are inhibited, making their retrieval as a subsequent target more difficult, but the duration of this interference may depend on reading skills. In this study, we examined neighbour priming effects in sentence reading among proficient Norwegian–English bilinguals reading in their L2. We investigated the effects of the distance between prime and target (short vs. long) and the nature of the overlap between the two words (beginning or end), and related these to differences in individual cognitive skills. Our results replicated the inhibition effects found in monolinguals, albeit slightly delayed. Interference between form-related words was affected by the L2 reading skills and, crucially, by the phonological decoding abilities of the bilingual reader. We discuss the results in light of competition models of bilingual reading as well as episodic memory accounts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; The dynamics of production, circulation and dissemination of knowledge that are currently developing in the digital ecosystem testify to a profound change in capitalism. On the margins of the traditional duo of knowledge markets and exclusive property rights, the emerging notion of cultural commons is opening the door to new modes of production based on hybrid market arrangements and an inclusive understanding of property. This book studies the political economy of cultural commons in the digital ecosystem, outlining the contexts and areas of thought in which this concept has emerged and identifying the socio-economic, technical and political issues associated with it. It also analyzes the specific physical conditions that enable the implementation of the economy of cultural commons in a specific digital ecosystem, that of books, by studying the effects of digital libraries and self-publishing platforms.ContentsPart 1. Social Sciences - Abstract
The possible transformation of the explicit knowledge developed during classroom learning of a second language into implicit knowledge of that language remains an open issue. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the explicit and implicit processing of morphosyntactic violations of English as an L2. ERP responses were obtained from 24 French learners (12 Intermediate and 12 Advanced) and 12 Native controls (NS) while participants evaluated the grammaticality of orally presented sentences containing subject-verb agreement violations. Results show that NS and Advanced speakers outperformed the Intermediate ones on the behavioural task. A P600 effect was obtained for all groups. Additionally, NS and Advanced learners exhibited an early negativity after violations while there was no significant effect in Intermediate speakers. The presence and amplitude of this early negativity was correlated with the structure-specific proficiency of Intermediate speakers and with the time of instruction of all learners. Results suggest that the superior native-likeness of the early responses obtained in Advanced learners is due more to their better proficiency and superior degree of explicit instruction than to the direct opportunity for implicit knowledge that their stay abroad represented.

This article intends to study Open Data platforms in the public sector, identified by variable techno-political configurations, as a concrete embodiment of the “Commons” of knowledge. A synthetic model for the study of persistent enclosures and governance models in different situations and covering the entire life cycle of this type of data is highlighted. With the support of two specific ethnographies, this comparison shed light on the centrality of the socio-political project beyond the challenges of public action engineering.

International audience; This paper offers a pragmatic account of two wh-questions in French used non-canonically - c’est quoi, ce N and qu’est-ce que constructions. It is claimed that in this non-canonical use, both constructions express surprise. As these constructions may be syntactically ambiguous between an information-seeking reading and a surprise reading, it is expected that the two readings differ in terms of prosody. This hypothesis is supported by the results of a production experiment. Experimental evidence shows significant prosodic differences between syntactically similar information-seeking questions and surprise questions. Surprise questions exhibit an increase in lengthening, slower speech rate and less frequent rising final contours.

Starting from two variables determining the nature of a common knowledge (the mode of governance and the systems of property rights), we make the hypothesis that the dynamic of contributory self-organized production of knowledge, emblematic of the fablabs, related to a common knowledge as defined by Hess and Ostrom (2007) and in this sense is a new lever for entrepreneurship. To evaluate the relevance of this hypothesis, we will confront these theoritical arguments with an empirical study of various actors of six fablabs. We’ll see which variables must be at the heart of fablab governance to promote projects in common and for the common.; Les connaissances, au cœur de la création de valeur pour l’entreprise, font l’objet de nombreux conflits d’appropriation qui ont donné naissance à un mouvement critique pour préserver des communs de connaissance (E. Ostrom).

This work examines the effect of learning conditions on the evolution of the neurocognitive mechanisms used by French speakers to process a second language (English). We used behavioural (acceptability judgments) and electrophysiological (event-related potentials) measures. Two types of training were compared, designed to reflect two learning situations : through exposure (implicit learning) or instruction (explicit learning). Two experiments were conducted. In the first one (E1), we studied how our trainings affected the processing of morphosyntactic violations working in a similar or conflictual way in the L2 and L1 of our participants. In the second experiment (E2), we tried to reduce the bias towards explicit learning entailed by the presence of violations, by studying how learners process temporary syntactic anomalies triggered by prosody-syntax mismatches. Results show a beneficial effect for both types of training. Explicit learning proved to be slightly more effective in improving the processing of a coflictual structure. In E2 it reduced the impact of individual abilities. E1 confirmed that the level of attention to grammaticality affects the nature and amplitude of ERP components. In E2, implicit training was linked to a faster and more automatic processing of incongruities. This research confirms that learning conditions can affect L2 processing even in a short time and for intermediate learners, but underlines the importance of reducing the biases towards explicit processing that are inherent to the EEG violation paradigm., Dans cette thèse, nous examinons l'effet de différentes conditions d'apprentissage sur l'évolution des mécanismes neurocognitifs utilisés par des apprenants francophones pour traiter l'anglais L2, grâce à des mesures comportementales (jugements d'acceptabilité) et électrophysiologiques (potentiels évoqués).

This articles addresses the question of digital social innovation, a recent and growing research field, through a conceptual focus on one of its application fields: open hardware in fablabs, known as places of collective making. This paper proposes to shed light on the specific properties of the contributive dynamics that occur in such places, arguing that they present some similarities with the generic properties generally associated with digital social innovation.

implicit training ,[SCCO.LING] Cognitive science/Linguistics ,ERPs ,SLA ,[SCCO.LING]Cognitive science/Linguistics ,morphosyntax - Abstract
International audience; Implicit grammar learning with semi-artificial languages has shown that it is possible to learn novel grammatical structures implicitly and that this can lead to both explicit and implicit knowledge. Can these results be extended to natural L2 learning and to learners who already have some knowledge of the L2? In this experiment, we investigated the effect of implicit training on the processing of morphosyntactic violations whose saliency and similarity between the participants’ L1 (French) and L2 (English) varied. The experiment followed a pre-test / training / post-test paradigm. During the pre- and post-test, ERP responses were obtained from 16 participants while they judged the semantic acceptability of 432 sentences. 192 critical polar questions contained violations of past tense morphology with DID and HAD. The rest of the sentences were fillers, 120 of which contained a semantic violations. Participants also completed a short timed Grammaticality Judgment Task with confidence ratings and source attributions (Rebuschat et al. 2015). During 3 one-hour training sessions, participants heard correct polar questions and were asked to select the right answer among propositions containing semantic and critical tense violationsIn the first session, violations with DID elicited a positive peak in the 300-500ms and 500-900 ms windows. A broad negativity resembling an N400 followed violations with HAD. These effects disappeared in the post-test. Behavioural measures revealed that participants were more accurate but slower in the HAD condition. Their performance did not improve following training but their response time slowed down. Confidence ratings showed that performance was better than chance even at a medium-low level of confidence (2 on a scale of 4). Participants reported using mostly intuition but their performance was significantly different from chance only when using rule knowledge. In the semantic acceptability task, participants performed better in the post-test; but they rejected semantically correct sentences containing a morphosyntactic violation with HAD more than with DID. A debriefing questionnaire showed that only 5 participants noticed the critical morphological errors, but only two of them were able to provide explicit rules for the relevant structure. These results show that participants are more sensitive to the L1-like violation (HAD condition) despite the superior saliency of the DID violation. It seems that learners rely on different processes for the two violations – an attention-related response with DID, probably triggered by the phonological saliency of the violation, and actual morphosyntactic processing with HAD. Though no significant effect of session was found on accuracy, the slow-down in response time and the disappearance of the positive effect suggest that participants were starting to rely less on saliency to process violations with DID. The training may have been too short for effects to appear. Although participants show some degree of implicit knowledge, they still relied on explicit knowledge successfully in the GJT. This might be due to the explicit nature of the rest of their English instruction and therefore to a habit of relying on rules.Rebuschat, P. et al., 2015. Triangulating measures of awareness.
