Abstract

We present the first measurement of the $^{47}$K($d,p\gamma$)$^{48}$K transfer reaction, performed in inverse kinematics using a reaccelerated beam of $^{47}$K. The level scheme of $^{48}$K has been greatly extended with nine new bound excited states identified and spectroscopic factors deduced. Detailed comparisons with SDPF-U and SDPF-MU shell-model calculations reveal a number of discrepancies with these results, and a preference for SDPF-MU is found. Intriguingly, an apparent systematic overestimation of spectroscopic factors and a poor reproduction of the energies for 1$^-$ states suggests that the mixing between the $\pi s^{\,\,\,1}_{1/2} d^{\,\,\,4}_{3/2}$ and $\pi s^{\,\,\,2}_{1/2} d^{\,\,\,3}_{3/2}$ proton configurations in $^{48}$K is not correctly described using current interactions, challenging our descriptions of light $N=28$ nuclei., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The first systematic experimental study of the neutron-rich Br isotopes with two complementary state-of-the-art techniques is presented. These isotopes have been populated in the fission process at two different facilities, GANIL and ILL. New spectroscopic information has been obtained for odd-even $^{87-93}$Br isotopes and the experimental results have been compared with state-of-the-art Large-Scale Shell-Model and DNO Shell-Model calculations. As a result of such theoretical approaches, a transition from prolate ($^{87,89}$Br) to oblate ($^{91,93}$Br) shapes is obtained from the subtle balance between proton and neutron quadrupole deformations, as a clear signature of pseudo-SU3 quadrupole regime., Comment: 17 pages, 24 figures, 5 tables

Abstract

The structure of $^{83}$As, $^{85}$As and $^{87}$As have been studied in fusion-fission reaction $^{238}$U+$^9$Be. Fission fragments were identified in mass and atomic number using the VAMOS++ spectrometer and the coincident $\gamma$-rays were detected in the $\gamma$-ray tracking array AGATA. New transitions in $^{83}$As and $^{85}$As are reported and placed in the level schemes. A level scheme of the excited states in $^{87}$As is proposed for the first time. The data are interpreted in frame of Large-Scale Shell-Model calculations, SU3 symmetries and Beyond Mean-Field frameworks. A spherical regime at magic number $N$=50 is predicted and the location of the proton $g_{9/2}$ orbital is proposed for the first time. Development of collectivity in a prolate deformed, $\gamma$-soft regime in the open shell cases $^{85}$As and $^{87}$As, most neutron-rich isotopes beyond $N$=50, is concluded. Data and theoretical calculations give confidence to a relatively high extrapolated excitation energy about 4 MeV of the $9/2^+$ state in $^{79}$Cu, one proton above $^{78}$Ni.

Abstract

The low-lying excited states in the neutron-deficient $N=Z+1$ nucleus $^{87}_{43}$Tc$^{\ }_{44}$ have been studied via the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{54}$Fe($^{36}$Ar, $2n1p$)$^{87}$Tc at the Grand Acc\'el\'erateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL), France. The AGATA spectrometer was used in conjunction with the auxiliary NEDA, Neutron Wall, and DIAMANT detector arrays to measure coincident prompt $\gamma$-rays, neutrons, and charged particles emitted in the reaction. A level scheme of $^{87}$Tc from the (9/2$^{+}_{g.s.}$) state to the (33/2$^{+}_{1}$) state was established based on 6 mutually coincident $\gamma$-ray transitions. The constructed level structure exhibits a rotational behavior with a sharp backbending at $\hbar\omega\approx 0.50$ MeV. A decrease in alignment frequency and increase in alignment sharpness in the odd-mass isotonic chains around $N=44$ is proposed as an effect of the enhanced isoscalar neutron-proton interactions in odd-mass nuclei when approaching the $N=Z$ line.

Abstract

The heaviest N=Z doubly-magic nucleus, $^{100}$Sn, and the neighboring nuclei offer unique opportunities to investigate the properties of nuclear interaction in extreme conditions. In particular, the Cd isotopes are expected to present features similar to those found in the Sn isotopic chain, since they have only two proton holes in the Z=50 shell. In this manuscript, the lifetime measurements of low-lying states in the even-mass $^{102-108}$Cd is presented. Thanks to the powerful detection capabilities of AGATA array and VAMOS++ spectrometer, the unusual employment of multi-nucleon transfer reactions permitted to investigate the first 2$^+$ and 4$^+$ states in all these nuclei, together with various deformed bands in $^{106}$Cd. The results were interpreted in the context of new state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field calculations, using the symmetry-conserving configuration-mixing approach. Despite the similarities in the electromagnetic properties of the low-lying states, there is a fundamental structural difference between the ground-state bands in the Z=48 and Z=50 isotopes. The comparison between experimental and theoretical results revealed a rotational character of the Cd nuclei, which have prolate-deformed ground states with $\beta_2 \approx 0.2$. At this deformation Z=48 becomes a closed-shell configuration, which is favored with respect to the spherical one., Comment: V1 : 14 pages, 12 figures. V2 : 16 pages, 11 figures. Abstract

The performance of the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) at GANIL is discussed, on the basis of the analysis of source and in-beam data taken with up to 30 segmented crystals. Data processing is described in detail. The performance of individual detectors are shown. The efficiency of the individual detectors as well as the efficiency after $\gamma$-ray tracking are discussed. Recent developments of $\gamma$-ray tracking are also presented. The experimentally achieved peak-to-total is compared with simulations showing the impact of back-scattered $\gamma$ rays on the peak-to-total in a $\gamma$-ray tracking array. An estimate of the achieved position resolution using the Doppler broadening of in-beam data is also given. Abstract

The fusion and transfer induced fission reaction $^{9}$Be($^{238}$U,~f) with 6.2 MeV/u beam energy, using a unique setup consisting of AGATA, VAMOS++ and EXOGAM detectors, was used to populate through the fission process and study the neutron-rich $^{119,121}$In isotopes. This setup enabled the prompt-delayed $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy of isotopes in the time range of $100~\rm{ns} - 200~\mu\rm{s}$. In the odd-$A$ $^{119,121}$In isotopes, indications of a short half-life $19/2^{-}$ isomeric state, in addition to the previously known $25/2^{+}$ isomeric state, were observed from the present data. Further, new prompt transitions above the $25/2^{+}$ isomer in $^{121}$In were identified along with reevaluation of its half-life. The experimental data were compared with the theoretical results obtained in the framework of large-scale shell-model calculations in a restricted model space. The $\langle \pi g_{9/2} \nu h_{11/2};I \arrowvert \hat{\mathcal{H}}\arrowvert \pi g_{9/2} \nu h_{11/2};I\rangle$ two-body matrix elements of residual interaction were modified to explain the excitation energies and the $B(E2)$ transition probabilities in the neutron-rich In isotopes. The (i) decreasing trend of $E(29/2^{+}) - E(25/2^{+})$ in odd-In (with dominant configuration $\pi g_{9/2}^{-1}\nu h_{11/2}^{-2}$ and maximum aligned spin of $29/2^{+}$) and (ii) increasing trend of $E(27/2^{+}) - E(23/2^{+})$ in odd-Sb (with dominant configuration $\pi g_{7/2}^{+1}\nu h_{11/2}^{-2}$ and maximum aligned spin of $27/2^{+}$) with increasing neutron number could be understood as a consequence of hole-hole and particle-hole interactions, respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

To test the predictive power of ab initio nuclear structure theory, the lifetime of the second 2+ state in neutron-rich 20O, tau(2+_2 ) = 150(+80-30) fs, and an estimate for the lifetime of the second 2+ state in 16C have been obtained, for the first time. The results were achieved via a novel Monte Carlo technique that allowed us to measure nuclear state lifetimes in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range, by analyzing the Doppler-shifted gamma-transition line shapes of products of low-energy transfer and deep-inelastic processes in the reaction 18O (7.0 MeV/u) + 181Ta. The requested sensitivity could only be reached owing to the excellent performances of the AGATA gamma-tracking array, coupled to the PARIS scintillator array and to the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. The experimental lifetimes agree with predictions of ab initio calculations using two- and three-nucleon interactions, obtained with the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group for 20O, and with the no-core shell model for 16C. The present measurement shows the power of electromagnetic observables, determined with high-precision gamma spectroscopy, to assess the quality of first-principles nuclear structure calculations, complementing common benchmarks based on nuclear energies. The proposed experimental approach will be essential for short lifetimes measurements in unexplored regions of the nuclear chart, including r-process nuclei, when intense ISOL-type beams become available.

Abstract

The neutron-rich $^{122-131}$Sb isotopes were produced as fission fragments in the reaction $^{9}$Be($^{238}$U,~f) with 6.2 MeV/u beam energy. An unique setup, consisting of AGATA, VAMOS++ and EXOGAM detectors, was used which enabled the prompt-delayed gamma-ray ($\gamma$) spectroscopy of fission fragments in the time range of 100 ns - 200 $\mu$s. New isomers, prompt and delayed transitions were established in the even-A $^{122-130}$Sb isotopes. In the odd-A $^{123-131}$Sb isotopes, new prompt and delayed $\gamma$-ray transitions were identified, in addition to the confirmation of the previously known isomers. The half-lives of the isomeric states and the $B(E2)$ transition probabilities of the observed transitions depopulating these isomers were extracted. The experimental data was compared with the theoretical results obtained in the framework of Large-Scale Shell-Model (LSSM) calculations in a restricted model space. Modifications of several components of the shell model interaction were introduced to obtain a consistent agreement with the excitation energies and the $B(E2)$ transition probabilities in neutron-rich Sn and Sb isotopes. The isomeric configurations in Sn and Sb were found to be relatively pure. Further, the calculations revealed that the presence of a single valence proton, mainly in the $g_{7/2}$ orbital in Sb isotopes, leads to significant mixing (due to the $\nu\pi$ interaction) of: (i) the neutron seniorities ($\upsilon_{\nu}$) and (ii) the neutron angular momentum ($I_{\nu}$). The above features have a weak impact on the excitation energies, but have an important impact on the $B(E2)$ transition probabilities. Abstract

The lifetimes of the low-lying excited states $2^+$ and $4^+$ have been directly measured in the neutron-deficient $^{106,108}$Sn isotopes. The nuclei were populated via a deep-inelastic reaction and the lifetime measurement was performed employing a differential plunger device. The emitted $\gamma$ rays were detected by the AGATA array, while the reaction products were uniquely identified by the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. Large-Scale Shell-Model calculations with realistic forces indicate that, independently of the pairing content of the interaction, the quadrupole force is dominant in the $B(E2; 2_1^+ \to 0_{g.s.}^+)$ values and it describes well the experimental pattern for $^{104-114}$Sn; the $B(E2; 4_1^+ \to 2_1^+)$ values, measured here for the first time, depend critically on a delicate pairing-quadrupole balance, disclosed by the very precise results in $^{108}$Sn. Abstract

The response function of the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) at low energy has been evaluated with γ-ray sources from 20 keV to 1.4 MeV. Particular interest was given to the treatment of γ-ray below 100 keV which interact predominantly by photo-electric effect in the first centimeter of the germanium crystal. The performances are evaluated and improvements to the data processing are proposed.

Abstract

The reduced transition probabilities for the 4+1 -2+1 and 2+1 -0+1 transitions in 92Mo and 94Ru and for the 4+1 -2+1 and 6+1 -4+1 transitions in 90Zr have been determined in this experiment making use of a multinucleon transfer reaction. These results have been interpreted on the basis of realistic shell-model calculations in the f5=2, p3=2, p1=2, and g9=2 proton valence space. Only the combination of extensive lifetime information and large scale shell-model calculations allowed the extent of the seniority conservation in the N = 50 g9=2 orbital to be understood. The conclusion is that seniority is largely conserved in the first 71g9=2 orbital.

Abstract

The neutron-deficient xenon isotopes have proved to be a good test bench to study octupole correlations. Nuclei around N = Z = 56, like 110Xe, are indeed expected to show some of the largest octupole correlations in the whole Segré chart. An experiment aimed at studying the octupole correlations in the very exotic 110Xe was performed in Jyväskylä, using the γ-ray detector array JUROGAM III coupled to the MARA separator. NEDA has been designed to be a versatile device, with high-detection efficiency, excellent neutron-gamma discrimination, and high rate capabilities. Abstract

International audience; Level lifetimes of the yrast (5/2 −) to 13/2 − states in the neutron-rich nucleus 53 Ti, produced in a multinucleon-transfer reaction, have been measured for the first time. The recoil distance Doppler-shift method was employed and lifetimes of the excited states were extracted by a lineshape analysis aided by Geant4-based Monte-Carlo simulations. The experiment was performed at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds facility in Caen, France, by using the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array for the γ-ray detection coupled to the large-acceptance variable mode spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification and the Cologne plunger for deep-inelastic reactions. Reduced transition probabilities, deduced from the lifetimes, give new information on the nuclear structure of 53 Ti, and are used to benchmark different shell-model calculations using established interactions in the fp shell.

Abstract

The fusion and transfer induced fission reaction $^{9}$Be($^{238}$U,~f) with 6.2 MeV/u beam energy, using a unique setup consisting of AGATA, VAMOS++ and EXOGAM detectors, was used to populate through the fission process and study the neutron-rich $^{119,121}$In isotopes. This setup enabled the prompt-delayed $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy of isotopes in the time range of $100~\rm{ns} - 200~\mu\rm{s}$. In the odd-$A$ $^{119,121}$In isotopes, indications of a short half-life $19/2^{-}$ isomeric state, in addition to the previously known $25/2^{+}$ isomeric state, were observed from the present data. Further, new prompt transitions above the $25/2^{+}$ isomer in $^{121}$In were identified along with reevaluation of its half-life. The experimental data were compared with the theoretical results obtained in the framework of large-scale shell-model calculations in a restricted model space. The $\langle \pi g_{9/2} \nu h_{11/2};I \arrowvert \hat{\mathcal{H}}\arrowvert \pi g_{9/2} \nu h_{11/2};I\rangle$ two-body matrix elements of residual interaction were modified to explain the excitation energies and the $B(E2)$ transition probabilities in the neutron-rich In isotopes. The (i) decreasing trend of $E(29/2^{+}) - E(25/2^{+})$ in odd-In (with dominant configuration $\pi g_{9/2}^{-1}\nu h_{11/2}^{-2}$ and maximum aligned spin of $29/2^{+}$) and (ii) increasing trend of $E(27/2^{+}) - E(23/2^{+})$ in odd-Sb (with dominant configuration $\pi g_{7/2}^{+1}\nu h_{11/2}^{-2}$ and maximum aligned spin of $27/2^{+}$) with increasing neutron number could be understood as a consequence of hole-hole and particle-hole interactions, respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

The high-spin states of the neutron-rich Ga81, with three valence protons outside a Ni78 core, were measured. The measurement involved prompt γ-ray spectroscopy of fission fragments isotopically identified using the combination of the variable mode spectrometer (VAMOS++) and the advanced gamma tracking array (AGATA). The new γ-ray transitions, observed in coincidence with Ga81 ions, and the corresponding level scheme do not confirm the high-spin levels reported earlier. The newly observed high-spin states in Ga81 are interpreted using the results of state-of-the-art large-scale shell model (LSSM) calculations. The lower excitation energy levels are understood as resulting from the recoupling of three valence protons to the closed doubly magic core, while the highest excitation energy levels correspond to excitations of the magic N=50 neutron core. These results support the doubly magic character of Ni78 and the persistence of the N=50 shell closure but also highlight the presence of strong proton-neutron correlations associated with the promotion of neutrons across the magic N=50 shell gap, only few nucleons away from Ni78.

Seniority isomers in Sn, with dominantly pure neutron configurations, directly probe the underlying neutron-neutron (νν) interaction. Abstract

International audience; 132Sn is one of the rare neutron-rich unstable nuclei, with classical doubly magic shell closures, that is experimentally accessible with the recent developments in accelerators and detectors. The study of the excited states and the transition probabilities in nuclei in its vicinity, with few particles or/and holes added to the inert core, are crucial for understanding the shell model theory and the relevant pp, pn and nn interactions in this mass A ∼ 130 region. Additionally, in this mass-region, there are presence of many seniority isomers in the range of ns to µs. When the lifetime of the isomer is of the order of µs’s, an additional challenge appears in correlating the γ-ray transition feeding and depopulating these isomers. Therefore, these nuclei are often known either from their isomer decay or from their prompt γ spectroscopy. In the present work, the prompt-delayed spectroscopy of neutronrich Sb isotopes have been carried out by utilising the unique combination of AGATA, VAMOS++ and EXOGAM detectors [1].

Abstract

Lifetime measurements of excited states of the light N=52 isotones Kr88, Se86, and Ge84 have been performed, using the recoil distance Doppler shift method and VAMOS and AGATA spectrometers for particle identification and gamma spectroscopy, respectively. The reduced electric quadrupole transition probabilities B(E2;2+→0+) and B(E2;4+→2+) were obtained for the first time for the hard-to-reach Ge84. While the B(E2;2+→0+) values of Kr88, Se86 saturate the maximum quadrupole collectivity offered by the natural valence (3s, 2d, 1g7/2, 1h11/2) space of an inert Ni78 core, the value obtained for Ge84 largely exceeds it, suggesting that shape coexistence phenomena, previously reported at N''49, extend beyond N=50. The onset of collectivity at Z=32 is understood as due to a pseudo-SU(3) organization of the proton single-particle sequence reflecting a clear manifestation of pseudospin symmetry. It is realized that the latter provides actually reliable guidance for understanding the observed proton and neutron single particle structure in the whole medium-mass region, from Ni to Sn, pointing towards the important role of the isovector-vector ρ field in shell-structure evolution.

Abstract

Prompt γ-ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich Kr96, produced in transfer- and fusion-induced fission reactions, has been performed using the combination of the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array and the VAMOS++ spectrometer. A second excited state, assigned to Jπ=4+, is observed for the first time, and a previously reported level energy of the first 2+ excited state is confirmed. The measured energy ratio R4/2=E(4+)/E(2+)=2.12(1) indicates that this nucleus does not show a well-developed collectivity contrary to that seen in heavier N=60 isotones. This new measurement highlights an abrupt transition of the degree of collectivity as a function of the proton number at Z=36, of similar amplitude to that observed at N=60 at higher Z values. A possible reason for this abrupt transition could be related to the insufficient proton excitations in the g9/2, d5/2, and s1/2 orbitals to generate strong quadrupole correlations or to the coexistence of competing different shapes. An unexpected continuous decrease of R4/2 as a function of the neutron number up to N=60 is also evidenced. This measurement establishes the Kr isotopic chain as the low-Z boundary of the island of deformation for N=60 isotones. A comparison with available theoretical predictions using different beyond mean-field approaches shows that these models fail to reproduce the abrupt transitions at N=60 and Z=36.

The extracted experimental B(E2) values are compared with large-scale shell-model calculations and with beyond-mean-field calculations with the Gogny D1S interaction. A good agreement between calculations and experimental values is found, and the results demonstrate in particular the spectroscopic quality of the Lenzi, Nowacki, Poves, and Sieja (LNPS) shell-model interaction.

Abstract

Lifetimes of low-lying states in 73Ga and 70,72,74 Zn were measured using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) method. These nuclei were produced in deep-inelastic reactions in inverse kinematics with a 208Pb beam impinging on a 76Ge target. Prompt rays were detected using the AGATA tracking array coupled to the VAMOS++ spectrometer. Lifetime of the 5/2- state in 73Ga, measured for the first time, provides additional evidence for the existence of a 1/2-, 3/2- ground-state doublet. The lifetimes of the 4+ states in 70,72,74 Zn were remeasured in an attempt to understand the discrepancies observed between earlier measurements. The internal decay via γ-ray emission of the 10+ metastable state was observed. As the structure of this isomeric state has to involve at least four unpaired nucleons, it cannot be populated in a simple two-neutron removal reaction from the Fe56 ground state. The isomeric state was produced in the low-momentum (-energy) tail of the parallel momentum (energy) distribution of Fe54, suggesting that it was populated via the decay of the Δ0 resonance into a proton. This process allows the population of four-nucleon states, such as the observed isomer. Therefore, it is concluded that the observation of this 10+ metastable state in Fe54 is a consequence of the quark structure of the nucleons. © 2016 American Physical Society, We thank the GSI accelerator staff for their excellent work. Abstract

International audience; Lifetime measurements of excited states of the light $N=52$ isotones $^{88}$Kr, $^{86}$Se, and $^{84}$Ge have been performed, using the recoil distance Doppler shift method and VAMOS and AGATA spectrometers for particle identification and gamma spectroscopy, respectively. The reduced electric quadrupole transition probabilities $B(E2;2^+ \rightarrow 0^+)$ and $B(E2;4^+ \rightarrow 2^+)$ were obtained for the first time for the hard-to-reach $^{84}$Ge. While the $B(E2;2^+ \rightarrow 0^+)$ values of $^{88}$Kr, $^{86}$Se saturate the maximum quadrupole collectivity offered by the natural valence $(3s, 2d, 1g_{7/2}, 1h_{11/2})$ space of an inert $^{78}$Ni core, the value obtained for $^{84}$Ge largely exceeds it, suggesting that shape coexistence phenomena, previously reported at $N \lesssim 49$, extend beyond $N=50$. The onset of collectivity at $Z=32$ is understood as due to a pseudo-SU(3) organization of the proton single-particle sequence reflecting a clear manifestation of pseudospin symmetry. It is realized that the latter provides actually reliable guidance for understanding the observed proton and neutron single particle structure in the whole medium-mass region, from Ni to Sn, pointing towards the important role of the isovector-vector $\rho$ field in shell-structure evolution.
