We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases. In nuclear fusion research, the effective ion charge Z

The optimized superconducting stellarator device Wendelstein 7-X (with major radius , minor radius , and plasma volume) restarted operation after the assembly of a graphite heat shield and 10 inertially cooled island divertor modules. This paper reports on the results from the first high-performance plasma operation. Glow discharge conditioning and ECRH conditioning discharges in helium turned out to be important for density and edge radiation control. Plasma densities of with central electron temperatures were routinely achieved with hydrogen gas fueling, frequently terminated by a radiative collapse. In a first stage, plasma densities up to were reached with hydrogen pellet injection and helium gas fueling. Here, the ions are indirectly heated, and at a central density of a temperature of with was transiently accomplished, which corresponds to with a peak diamagnetic energy of and volume-averaged normalized plasma pressure . The routine access to high plasma densities was opened with boronization of the first wall. After boronization, the oxygen impurity content was reduced by a factor of 10, the carbon impurity content by a factor of 5. The reduced (edge) plasma radiation level gives routinely access to higher densities without radiation collapse, e.g. well above line integrated density and central temperatures at moderate ECRH power. Both X2 and O2 mode ECRH schemes were successfully applied. Core turbulence was measured with a phase contrast imaging diagnostic and suppression of turbulence during pellet injection was observed.

We present a framework for training artificial neural networks (ANNs) as surrogate Bayesian models for the inference of plasma parameters from diagnostic data collected at nuclear fusion experiments, with the purpose of providing a fast approximation of conventional Bayesian inference. Because of the complexity of the models involved, conventional Bayesian inference can require tens of minutes for analyzing one single measurement, while hundreds of thousands can be collected during a single plasma discharge. The ANN surrogates can reduce the analysis time down to tens/hundreds of microseconds per single measurement. The core idea is to generate the training data by sampling them from the joint probability distribution of the parameters and observations of the original Bayesian model. The network can be trained to learn the reconstruction of plasma parameters from observations and the model joint probability distribution from plasma parameters and observations. Previous work has validated the application of such a framework to the former case at the Wendelstein 7-X and Joint European Torus experiments. Here, we first give a description of the general methodological principles allowing us to generate the training data, and then we show an example application of the reconstruction of the joint probability distribution of an effective ion charge Zeff-bremsstrahlung model from data collected at the latest W7-X experimental campaign. One key feature of such an approach is that the network is trained exclusively on data generated with the Bayesian model, requiring no experimental data. This allows us to replicate the training scheme and generate fast, surrogate ANNs for any validated Bayesian diagnostic model.

Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), the largest advanced stellarator, is built to demonstrate high power, high performance quasi-continuous operation. Therefore, in the recent campaign, experiments were performed to prepare for long pulse operation, addressing three critical issues: the development of stable detachment, control of the heat and particle exhaust, and the impact of leading edges on plasma performance. The heat and particle exhaust in W7-X is realized with the help of an island divertor, which utilizes large magnetic islands at the plasma boundary. This concept shows very efficient heat flux spreading and favourable scaling with input power. Experiments performed to overload leading edges showed that the island divertor yields good impurity screening. A highlight of the recent campaign was a robust detachment scenario, which allowed reducing power loads even by a factor of ten. At the same time, neutral pressures at the pumping gap entrance yielded the particle removal rate close to the values required for stable density control in steady-state operation.

Observations on confinement in the first experimental campaign on the optimized Stellarator Wendelstein 7-X are summarized. In this phase W7-X was equipped with five inboard limiters only and thus the discharge length restricted to avoid local overheating. Stationary plasmas are limited to low densities

The effective charge Zeff indicates the overall impurity contamination of a plasma. Zeff can be derived experimentally from the intensity of the plasma bremsstrahlung emission. We describe here the diagnostic set-ups and the Bayesian modeling allowing the inference of Zeff at W7-X. First results from the operational campaigns in 2017 and 2018 are shown. Measurements of the visible plasma radiation along a single line-of-sight traversing the core plasma has been carried out using a compact USB-spectrometer with a time resolution of 100 ms. A spectral region (627–641 nm) that is free from line emission is selected for the analysis of the bremsstrahlung emission, which also depends on electron temperature and density profiles. Electron temperature profiles are derived from either the electron cyclotron emission or the Thomson scattering diagnostic. Electron density profiles, however, have their shape information derived from Thomson scattering measurements and absolute values from single line-of-sight interferometry measurements. The Minerva framework is used to infer the profiles with Gaussian processes and develop a Bayesian model of the bremsstrahlung emission to infer line averaged Zeff. The sensitivity of the diagnostic enables Zeff measurements down to the lowest core electron densities observed in the last campaign of 0.75×1019 m−3 with a statistical relative error of ≈50% (Zeff = 3.2, 100 ms integration time). The analysis is automated to routinely compute Zeff after every plasma discharges.

During the two most recent experimental campaigns in the advanced stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) (Klinger et al 2017 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 59 014018; Bosch et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 116015; Wolf et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 102020; Pedersen et al 2017 Phys. Plasmas 24 0555030) hydrogen ice pellet injection was performed for the first time. In order to investigate the potential of pellet fueling in W7-X and to study the particle deposition in a large stellarator, a blower-gun system was installed with 40 pellets capability. The experience gained with this system will be used for the specification of a future steady-state pellet injector system. One important motivation for a pellet injector (Dibon 2014 Master-Thesis Technical University Munich, Max-Planck Institut IPP) on W7-X is the mitigation of hollow density profiles expected in case of predominant neoclassical transport. For long-pulse operation of up to 30 min, only electron cyclotron resonance heating is available on W7-X. Hence, pellet injection will be the only source for deep particle fueling. Deep particle fueling by pellets in tokamaks is supported by a grad-B drift, if the pellets are injected from the magnetic high-field-side. This approach was tested in W7-X, as well. The injection of series of pellets was also tested. Here, deep fueling is supported for later pellets in the series by the plasma cooling following the initial pellets in the same series. As in earlier experiments in the heliotron LHD (Takeiri et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 102023), deep and rapid fueling could be achieved successfully in W7-X.

International audience; The Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) optimized stellarator fusion experiment,which went into operation in 2015, has been operating since 2017 with anun-cooled modular graphite divertor. This allowed first divertor physicsstudies to be performed at pulse energies up to 80 MJ, as opposed to 4MJ in the first operation phase, where five inboard limiters wereinstalled instead of a divertor. This, and a number of other upgrades tothe device capabilities, allowed extension into regimes of higher plasmadensity, heating power, and performance overall, e.g. setting a newstellarator world record triple product. The paper focuses on the firstphysics studies of how the island divertor works. The plasma heat loadsarrive to a very high degree on the divertor plates, with only minorheat loads seen on other components, in particular baffle structuresbuilt in to aid neutral compression. The strike line shapes andlocations change significantly from one magnetic configuration toanother, in very much the same way that codes had predicted they would.Strike-line widths are as large as 10 cm, and the wetted areas alsolarge, up to about 1.5 m2, which bodes well for futureoperation phases. Peak local heat loads onto the divertor were ingeneral benign and project below the 10 MW m?2 limit of thefuture water-cooled divertor when operated with 10 MW of heating power,with the exception of low-density attached operation in the high-iotaconfiguration. The most notable result was the complete (in all 10divertor units) heat-flux detachment obtained at high-density operationin hydrogen.

In nuclear fusion research, the effective ion charge Zeff, which characterizes the overall content of impurities, can be experimentally derived from the plasma electron–ion bremsstrahlung, given the electron density ne and temperature Te. At Wendelstein 7-X, a multichannel near-infrared spectrometer is installed to collect the plasma bremsstrahlung along 27 lines of sight covering more than half the plasma cross section, which provides information on Zeff over the entire plasma radius. To infer spatially resolved Zeff profiles, a Bayesian model is developed in the Minerva framework. Zeff, ne, and Te profiles are modeled as Gaussian processes, whose smoothness is determined by hyperparameters. These profiles are transformed to fields in Cartesian coordinates, given the poloidal magnetic flux surfaces calculated by the variational moments equilibrium code. Given all these physical quantities, the model predicts line-of-sight integrals of near-infrared bremsstrahlung spectra. The model includes the predictive (forward) models of the interferometer, Thomson scattering system, and visible and near-infrared spectrometers. Given the observations of all these diagnostics, the posterior probability distribution of Zeff profiles is calculated and shown as an inference solution. The smoothness (gradient) of the profiles is optimally chosen by Bayesian Occam’s razor. Furthermore, wall reflections can significantly pollute the measurements of the plasma bremsstrahlung, which leads to over-estimation of Zeff values in the edge region. In the first results presented in this work, this problem does not appear, and the posterior samples of Zeff profiles are overall plausible and consistent with Zeff values inferred, given the data from the single-channel visible spectrometer.

Wendelstein 7-X (W7‐X) is the world’s largest superconducting nuclear fusion experiment of the optimized stellarator type. In the first Operation Phase (OP1.1) helium and hydrogen plasmas were studied in limiter configuration. The heating energy was limited to 4 MJ and the main purpose of that campaign was the integral commissioning of the machine and diagnostics, which was achieved very successfully. Already from the beginning a comprehensive set of diagnostics was available to study the plasma. On the path towards high-power, high-performance plasmas, W7‐X will be stepwise upgraded from an inertially cooled (OP1.2, limited to 80 MJ) to an actively cooled island divertor (OP2, 10 MW steady-state plasma operation). The machine is prepared for OP1.2 with 10 inertially cooled divertor units, and the experimental campaign has started recently. The paper describes a subset of diagnostics which will be available for OP1.2 to study the plasma edge, divertor and scrape-off layer physics including those already available for OP1.1, plus modifications, upgrades and new systems. The focus of this summary will be on technical and engineering aspects, like feasibility and assembly but also on reliability, thermal loads and shielding against magnetic fields.

Inverse problems in plasma physics commonly face a tradeoff between approximated real-time schemes or post-processed rigorous uncertainty handling. Bayesian analysis allows parameter and uncertainty estimation as well as joint analysis of multiple diagnostics in a strict mathematical way. It also improves the inference from correlated measurements but with long processing times. For linear and non-linear problems, many optimal and sub-optimal Bayesian online algorithms are available but generally targeted at dynamic systems and introducing some level of approximation. Given plasma physics time-independent non-linear inverse problems, several Wendelstein 7-X diagnostics use a Bayesian inference framework. This research focuses on accelerating this type of mathematically intense standard Bayesian analysis for such inverse problems. We show a significant acceleration for the estimation of electron density and temperature profiles. The approach maintains a floating-point double precision while reducing the processing time useful in applications where a reliable error estimation is required together with a fast processing time.

Fusion reactors and long pulse fusion experiments heavily depend on a continuous fuel cycle, which requires detailed monitoring of exhaust gases. We have used a diagnostic residual gas analyzer (DRGA) built as a prototype for ITER and integrated it on the most advanced stellarator fusion experiment, Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X). The DRGA was equipped with a sampling tube and assessed for gas time of flight sample response, effects of magnetic field on gas detection and practical aspects of use in a state of the art fusion environment. The setup was successfully commissioned and operated and was used to observe the gas composition of W7-X exhaust gases. The measured time of flight gas response was found to be in the order of a second for a 7 m sample tube. High values of magnetic field were found to affect the partial pressure readings of the DRGA and suggest that additional shielding is necessary in future experimental campaigns.

Wendelstein 7-X, a superconducting optimized stellarator built in Greifswald/Germany, started its first plasmas with the last closed flux surface (LCFS) defined by 5 uncooled graphite limiters in December 2015. At the end of the 10 weeks long experimental campaign (OP1.1) more than 20 independent diagnostic systems were in operation, allowing detailed studies of many interesting plasma phenomena. For example, fast neutral gas manometers supported by video cameras (including one fast-frame camera with frame rates of tens of kHz) as well as visible cameras with different interference filters, with field of views covering all ten half-modules of the stellarator, discovered a MARFE-like radiation zone on the inboard side of machine module 4. This structure is presumably triggered by an inadvertent plasma-wall interaction in module 4 resulting in a high impurity influx that terminates some discharges by radiation cooling. The main plasma parameters achieved in OP1.1 exceeded predicted values in discharges of a length reaching 6 s. Although OP1.1 is characterized by short pulses, many of the diagnostics are already designed for quasi-steady state operation of 30 min discharges heated at 10 MW of ECRH. An overview of diagnostic performance for OP1.1 is given, including some highlights from the physics campaigns.

A combined IR and visible camera system [G. A. Wurden et al., “A high resolution IR/visible imaging system for the W7-X limiter,” Rev. Sci. Instrum. (these proceedings)] and a filterscope system [R. J. Colchin et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 74, 2068 (2003)] were implemented together to obtain spectroscopic data of limiter and first wall recycling and impurity sources during Wendelstein 7-X startup plasmas. Both systems together provided excellent temporal and spatial spectroscopic resolution of limiter 3. Narrowband interference filters in front of the camera yielded C-III and Hα photon flux, and the filterscope system provided Hα, Hβ, He-I, He-II, C-II, and visible bremsstrahlung data. The filterscopes made additional measurements of several points on the W7-X vacuum vessel to yield wall recycling fluxes. The resulting photon flux from both the visible camera and filterscopes can then be compared to an EMC3-EIRENE synthetic diagnostic [H. Frerichs et al., “Synthetic plasma edge diagnostics for EMC3-EIRENE, highlighted for Wendelstein 7-X,” Rev. Sci. Instrum. (these proceedings)] to infer both a limiter particle flux and wall particle flux, both of which will ultimately be used to infer the complete particle balance and particle confinement time τP.

Interferometry is used for measuring line average electronic densities in fusion plasmas. The W7-X stellarator will employ a two-color CO2 (10.591 m) and CO (5.295 m) heterodyne-infrared interferometer as an electronic density measurement diagnostic. The frequency displacement is 40 MHz for the CO2 wavelength and 25 MHz for the CO, so these values will fix the heterodyne frequencies. Because the frequency gap between the two carriers is wide enough and the detector sensitivity is similar for both wavelengths, it is possible to use a single detector for the two signals; nevertheless, they should be split with filters. Traditionally, the intermediate-frequency signals should be filtered, downconverted to a lower frequency by the use of analog circuitry, and then processed. A new approach is proposed. The intermediate-frequency signals are directly sampled by means of high-speed analog-to-digital converters followed by a digital diplexer and a specific phase-meter processor implemented in a field-programmable gate array. Preliminary results from the W7-X infrared interferometer prototype, without plasma, are presented.

Interferometry as one of the most common core fusion diagnostics has traditionally suffered from incomplete vibration compensation. Dispersion interferometry promises a more complete compensation of vibrations. For this reason it is being employed in an increasing number of experiments. However, thus far none of them have shown reliable real-time low-latency processing of dispersion interferometry data. Nonetheless this is a necessity for most machines when trying to do density feedback control, most notably in long discharges like the ones planned at the W7-X stellarator and ITER. In this paper we report the development of a new phase extraction method specifically developed for real-time evaluation using field programmable gate arrays (FPGA). It has been shown to operate reliably during the operation phase OP1.2a at W7-X and is now routinely being used by the W7-X density feedback system up to very high densities above 1.4×1020 m-2 without showing 2π-wraps and exhibits increased wrap stability by double-data-rate sampling. A rigorous error analysis has been conducted shedding insights into the signal composition of a dispersion interferometer have been gained. This includes the environmental effects, most notably air humidity, on the phase measurement and the correction thereof.

The edge magnetic structure in the Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX) and Wendelstein 7X (W7-X) stellarators has been shown to have a significant impact on the particle fueling and exhaust of the plasma main species (hydrogen) as well as impurity helium. For HSX, the plasma sourcing to exhaust ratio, quantified by the effective and global particle confinement times τ p * and τ p , H , respectively, increases when a magnetic island chain is located in the plasma edge. The fueling efficiency is reduced by 25% when the plasma boundary is deformed by the magnetic islands. The X-point geometry also yields higher plasma temperatures in front of the main recycling region. When the island is moved radially inward, both τ p * and τp decrease by 10 % – 25 % depending on plasma density. The τ p , H results rely heavily on EMC3-EIRENE modeling which confirms reduced fueling efficiency due to more rapid ionization in the outward shifted island position. These findings suggest that for a helically optimized system like HSX, the plasma fueling from the recycling source, as well as from active gas injection, can be controlled by the magnetic island chain in the plasma edge—which is a basic requirement for a divertor system. This process is also effective for the control of effective helium exhaust times, as τ p , H e * measured by perturbative gas puff experiments is reduced by up to 40% when the islands are shifted inwards. For Wendelstein 7-X, a similar reduction of τ p , H e * was inferred when magnetic islands were moved from the far plasma edge into the confined plasma region. However, the effective confinement features of H as the main plasma species were not affected due to the non-optimal position of the magnetic islands with respect to the highly localized ionization domain during the limiter startup campaign.

Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is a large optimized stellarator (B=2.5T, V=30m3) aiming at demonstrating the reactor relevance of the optimized stellarators. In 2015 W7-X will begin its first operation phase (OP1.1) with five inertially cooled inboard limiters made of graphite. Assuming the heat loads can be spread out evenly between the limiters, 1 second discharges at 2 MW of ECRH heating power could be run in OP1.1. The expected plasma parameters will be sufficient to demonstrate the readiness of the installed diagnostics and even to run a first physics program. The diagnostics available for this first operation phase, including some special limiter diagnostics, and their capabilities are being presented. The main objective of the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator is to demonstrate the integrated reactor potential of the optimized stellarator line. An important element of this mission is the achievement of high heating-power and high confinement in steady-state operation. Such an integrated plasma operation has not yet been demonstrated and represents the major scientific goal of W7-X. The way towards this goal is staged. In the first phase, called OP 1.1, December 2015-March 2016, a limiter configuration was used. In this paper, the preparation of the first operation phase as well as lessons learned during the first commissioning and the operation phase are discussed, while the physics results from OP 1.1 are reported elsewhere (Wolf et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 102020).

An overview of the diagnostics which are essential for the first operational phase of Wendelstein 7-X and the set of diagnostics expected to be ready for operation at this time are presented. The ongoing investigations of how to cope with high levels of stray Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) radiation in the ultraviolet (UV)/visible/infrared (IR) optical diagnostics are described.

In a next step D/T fusion device like ITER, an intense neutron flux will be produced as a consequence of the nuclear fusion reactions. The effects of the neutron induced damage in the microstructure of the plasma-facing material (PFM) may significantly change the thermal properties and the mechanical properties as well as the behaviour of the swelling and the tritium retention in such materials. In addition, a peak heat flux as high as 20 MW m−2 and a plasma flux of 1018–1020 cm−2 s−1 are expected in the divertor zone during the normal operation of the reactor. The divertor materials have to withstand the neutron damage, the high heat fluxes and the high erosion caused by the interaction with the high flux plasma. The sputtered particles are co-deposited with plasma, which may contribute significantly to the total tritium inventory in the PFM. Furthermore, the interaction of steam with the sputtered particles (with usually high specific surfaces) could produce large amounts of hydrogen. All of the above topics represent critical issues for plasma performance, safety and economy, as they could limit the use of some PFM materials in next generation fusion devices. Therefore, substantial R&D effort is needed to elucidate the effects of the neutron induced damage on microstructure, erosion/deposition, tritium retention and dust formation, as well as on hydrogen production. In the framework of the European Fusion R&D program, an extensive effort on neutron effects of the material properties: namely, thermal conductivity, mechanical properties, dimensional stability, tritium trapping, erosion/deposition, co-deposition, dust formation/removal, chemical reactivity with steam and oxygen, outgassing, baking and tritium removal from PFM have been undertaken during the past several years. In this paper, the recent progress achieved within the European Fusion R&D program and contributions to the development of ITER PFMs are presented and critically discussed.

A newly developed heat flux detector for direct measurement of the energy flux to a floating or biased target is presented. The detector has been used to measure the plasma sheath transmission factor (γ) for different gases as a function of the electron temperature. The determined values are in the range of 7 < γ < 17; they agree roughly with those theoretical predictions [G.A. Emmert, R.M. Wieland, A.T. Mense, J.N. Davidson, Phys. Fluids 23(4) (1980); H. Kimura, H. Maeda, N. Ueda. M. Seki, H. Kawamura, S. Yamamoto, M. Nagami, K. Odajima, S. Sengoku, Y. Shimomura, Nucl. Fusion 18(9) (1978); R.V. Manos, D.M. Budny, S.A. Cohen, J. Vac. Sci. Technol. A 1 (1983); P.C. Stangeby, J. Phys. D 15 (1982); P.C. Stangeby, Phys. Fluids 27(3) 1984] that include the recombination term.

Graphite and advanced carbon fiber composites (CFC) are widely used inside the vacuum vessel of magnetic fusion devices. However, erosion by chemical sputtering via hydrocarbon formation might limit their application as target material in future machines like ITER. The first systematic study of the chemical erosion of graphite and different CFCs (including a silicon-doped one) as a function of ion flux density in the range of 1.4 × 1021–5 × 1022 m-2 s-1was performed in the plasma generator PSI-1. The results of three different analysis methods agree within about 40%. No differences in the chemical erosion yields between hydrogen and deuterium exposures are found for the various materials. In contrast, the erosion yields differ up to a factor of two for the different CFC-materials. In general, the chemical sputtering yields decrease with increasing ion flux density Γ according to Γ-0.6reaching levels below 1% at the highest fluxes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) show preferred erosion in the area between the carbon fibers.

Graphite is widely used inside the vacuum vessel of magnetic fusion devices and is proposed as target material for future machines like ITER. There are, however, uncertainties concerning the erosion of the material by chemical sputtering via hydrocarbon formation at high ion flux densities. We report on experiments at the plasma generator PSI-1 using a stationary quasi-neutral plasma beam. The ion flux densities used cover the range from 4 · 1020 to 1.2 · 1022 m−2 s−1. They are thus filling the gap between the upper limit of ion beam experiments (1020 mm−2 s−1 and tokamak relevant values (> 1023 m−2 s−1). To suppress impurity-induced erosion the hydrogen discharges were carefully conditioned and checked for possible impurities, especially oxygen. Samples of different advanced carbon fiber composites (CFC) - including a silicon-doped one - were exposed to various plasma conditions. A calibrated mass spectrometer monitored the CxHy-formation in situ and the axial dependence of the CH-band intensities at 431 and 432.4 nm in front of the target was detected. We have studied the temperature dependence (250–700°C) of the erosion yields at ion flux densities up to more than 1022 m−2 s−1 in hydrogen discharges. Weight loss measurements and scans with an optical profilometer were used to determine the mass loss. For Si-doped CFC an erosion yield of 1% was found, which is a factor of two less than for pure CFC.

The next step in the Wendelstein stellarator line is the large superconducting device Wendelstein 7-X, currently under construction in Greifswald, Germany. Steady-state operation is an intrinsic feature of stellarators, and one key element of the Wendelstein 7-X mission is to demonstrate steady-state operation under plasma conditions relevant for a fusion power plant. Steady-state operation of a fusion device, on the one hand, requires the implementation of special technologies, giving rise to technical challenges during the design, fabrication and assembly of such a device. On the other hand, also the physics development of steady-state operation at high plasma performance poses a challenge and careful preparation. The electron cyclotron resonance heating system, diagnostics, experiment control and data acquisition are prepared for plasma operation lasting 30 min. This requires many new technological approaches for plasma heating and diagnostics as well as new concepts for experiment control and data acquisition.

The gain in experience with long-pulse operation under fusion relevant plasma conditions is an important step towards successful sustainment of future steady state reactor plasmas. The stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) [1], presently being under construction, is already equipped with a superconducting coil system and principally capable of quasi-continuous operation. Like other long pulse devices, W7-X is faced with new enhanced technical requirements which have to be met by plasma facing components as well as the diagnostic systems in general. Water-cooled windows were qualified up to 60 kW/m2 thermal load, and shutters against evaporation of sensitive elements outside the attended time of the diagnostic as well as for baseline control had been developed. Shielding of in-vessel components against damage by absorption of microwave stray radiation originating from the heating systems appears to be one of the most challenging tasks. Experiments using a microwave test chamber identify critical materials and approved the necessity for careful shielding of both, sensitive diagnostics and cables. Infrared (IR) interferometry is a method for measuring the line-electron density of fusion plasmas. The significant performance achieved by FPGAs in solving digital signal processing tasks advocates the use of this type of technology in two-color IR interferometers of modern stellarators, such as the TJ-II (Madrid, Spain) and the future W7-X (Greifswald, Germany). In this work the implementation of a line-average electron density measuring system in an FPGA device is described. Several optimizations for multichannel systems are detailed and test results from the TJ-II as well as from a W7-X prototype are presented.

A second harmonics or dispersion interferometer (DI) is a promising approach for the measurement of line-integrated densities on fusion devices. In contrast to a conventional twocolor interferometer, the second harmonics (SH) of an interferometer beam, generated by a non-linear optical crystal, is used as the second probing beam. Since a few years, non-linear crystals with a sufficient conversion rate are available for the infrared (IR) spectrum around 10 %m. Several types of these IR non-linear crystals have the phase-matching angle range as big as ≈1°, which is a great advantage for SH generation applications. Among other advantages, dispersion interferometers offer the possibility of a highly compact frameless design, which makes a modular approach possible for multi-channel diagnostics. Another unique feature is that vibrations are compensated intrinsically. This work will analyze the performance of a 10.6 %m DI currently under construction at the TEXTOR tokamak.

A pulsed high-frequency discharge was used to excite a non-LTE (local thermal equilibrium) plasma with a high specific power density sufficiently high to dissociate oxygen and gaseous oxides. If traces of hydrocarbons were present in the gas mixture, in the spectrum the Violet system of CN appeared with a long radiation decay time. The CN bands are excited preferentially by inelastic collisions with metastable nitrogen molecules (A3σ). These levels can be efficiently depopulated by competing impact with atomic oxygen. By measuring the radiation signal during the radiation decay a dynamic range of 6 was achieved for a variation of the oxygen content between 1 and 100 ppm. The measured radiation decay of the violet CN 0–0-bands at 388 nm was simulated by a simple model of rate equations valid in the time region where diffusion processes may be neglected.

The stellarator Wendelstein 7-X will allow for quasicontinuous operation with the duration only being limited to two 30 min discharges per day, at a continuous heating power of 10 MW electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) at 140 GHz, by the capacity of the cooling water reservoir. This will result in high thermal loads on all plasma facing components of 50-100 kW/m(2) from radiation alone and of up to about 500 kW/m(2) on components additionally exposed to convective loads. In high density scenarios toroidally varying ECRH stray radiation levels of 50-200 kW/m(2) need to be coped with, requiring careful material selection and different shielding and hardening techniques. Furthermore, a gradual buildup of coatings on plasma facing optical components, which without any measures being taken, would lead to high transmission losses already within a few days of long pulse operation (equivalent to about 1 year of operation in pulsed devices like JET or ASDEX-upgrade) and therefore needs to be prevented as much as possible. In addition in situ cleaning as well as absolute calibration techniques need to be developed for all plasma facing optical systems. Here we report about some of our efforts to find, for various types of diagnostics, ways to cope with these adverse effects. Moreover, we give a few examples for individual diagnostic specific issues with respect to quasicontinuous operation, such as the development of a special integrator for the magnetic diagnostics as well as special interferometer types which can cope with unavoidable vibrations and slow path length changes due to, e.g., thermal expansion of the plasma vessel.

For the optimisation of the beam line configuration of the multi-channel interferometer at the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator the probabilistic approach of Bayesian experimental design (BED) is applied. Parameters of physical interest are directly implemented as design criteria. The quality of the design is analysed according to its expected information gain (expected utility) about the parameters of interest, which enables one to compare different diagnostic configurations quantitatively. The focus of this work lies on the comparison of different technical approaches for the interferometer diagnostic. Different physical problems (high confinement regimes, neoclassical predictions) and their effect on the density distribution are applied as optimisation goals. The influence of the port system and the in-vessel components (retro-reflectors) is discussed. For this, the design was done with and without technical restrictions, the resulting expected utilities are compared and analysed. Furthermore, the impact of an additional beamline at a different toroidal position (congruent to the Thomson scattering diagnostic) is examined.

Mid Infrared (10,6 μm CO2 laser lines) interferometers as a plasma density diagnostic must use two-colour systems with superposed interferometers beams at different wavelengths in order to cope with mechanical vibrations and drifts. They require a highly precise phase difference measurement where all sources of error must be reduced. One of these is the cross-talk between the signals which creates nonlinear spurious periodic mixing products. The reason may be either optical or electrical crosstalk both resulting in similar perturbations of the measurement. In the TJII interferometer a post-processing algorithm is used to reduce the crosstalk in the data. This post-processing procedure is not appropriate for very long pulses, as it is the case for in new tokamak (ITER) or stellarator (W7-X) projects. In both cases an on-line reduction process is required or—even better—the unwanted signal components must be reduced in the system itself CO2 laser interferometers which as the second wavelength use the CO las...

Bayesian experimental design (BED) is a framework for the optimization of diagnostics basing on probability theory. In this work it is applied to the design of a multichannel interferometer at the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator experiment. BED offers the possibility to compare diverse designs quantitatively, which will be shown for beam-line designs resulting from different plasma configurations. The applicability of this method is discussed with respect to its computational effort.

The diagnostic set‐up for Wendelstein 7‐X, a magnetic fusion device presently under construction, is currently in the design process to optimize the outcome under given technical constraints. Compared to traditional design approaches, Bayesian Experimental Design (BED) allows to optimize with respect to physical motivated design criterions. It aims to find the optimal design by maximizing an expected utility function that quantifies the goals of the experiment. The expectation marginalizes over the uncertain physical parameters and the possible values of future data. The approach presented here bases on maximization of an information measure (Kullback‐Leibler entropy). As an example, the optimization of an infrared multichannel interferometer is shown in detail. Design aspects like the impact of technical restrictions are discussed.

Plasma diagnostic based on the injection of a thermal helium or lithium beam is a well known diagnostic tool. The advantage of the He-beam diagnostic is a greater penetration depth because of higher ionization energy of the helium atoms and the possibility to built long term stable beam sources.

An eight channel interferometer is developed for density feedback control and the continuous measurement of electron density profiles in the stellarator W7-X. An additional sightline is launched in the geometry of the Thomson scattering for cross calibration. Due to the W7-X coil geometry access is strongly restricted. This motivates the optimization of the sightline geometry and design studies for supplementary chords. In-vessel retroreflectors will be used and inserted in the first wall elements. To cope with associated mechanical vibrations and thermal drifts during the discharges with envisaged duration of 30min either two-color or second harmonic interferometry techniques must be applied.
