LearnPlatform by Instructure conducted this quasi-experimental study, evaluating the impact of the Breathe For Change Mindfulness, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), and Yoga Teacher Training on K-12 student attendance and chronic absenteeism during the 2023-24 school year. The study included 172 educators and 955 students from a mid-size public school district in Massachusetts. Researchers utilized teacher surveys and student attendance records and employed multiple regression models and propensity score matching to control for selection bias. Key findings indicate that educators who completed the Breathe For Change training reported higher usage of wellness and SEL practices. Additionally, students with Breathe For Change-trained educators exhibited significantly higher attendance rates and lower chronic absenteeism compared to their peers, with particularly pronounced improvements among students who had been chronically absent in the previous year. The present study offers Moderate Evidence on the impact of the Breathe for Change Mindfulness, SEL, and Yoga Teacher Training according to the Every Student Succeeds Act (2015). Electron-capture decays of $^{125}$Xe and $^{127}$Xe, and double-electron-capture decays of $^{124}$Xe, are backgrounds in searches for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) conducted by dual-phase xenon time projection chambers such as LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ). These decays produce signals with more light and less charge than equivalent-energy $\beta$ decays, and correspondingly overlap more with WIMP signals. We measure three electron-capture charge yields in LZ: the 1.1~keV M-shell, 5.2~keV L-shell, and 33.2~keV K-shell at drift fields of 193~V/cm and 96.5~V/cm. The LL double-electron-capture decay of $^{124}$Xe exhibits even more pronounced shifts in charge and light. We provide a first model of double-electron-capture charge yields using the link between ionization density and electron-ion recombination, and identify a need for more accurate calculations. Finally, we discuss the implications of the reduced charge yield of these decays and other interactions creating inner-shell vacancies for future dark matter searches., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

Social online games like Minecraft and Roblox have become increasingly integral to children's daily lives. Our study explores how children aged 8 to 13 create and customize avatars in these virtual environments. Through semi-structured interviews and gameplay observations with 48 participants, we investigate the motivations behind children's avatar-making. Our findings show that children's avatar creation is motivated by self-representation, experimenting with alter ego identities, fulfilling social needs, and improving in-game performance. In addition, designed monetization strategies play a role in shaping children's avatars. We identify the ''wardrobe effect,'' where children create multiple avatars but typically use only one favorite consistently. We discuss the impact of cultural consumerism and how social games can support children's identity exploration while balancing self-expression and social conformity. This work contributes to understanding how avatar shapes children's identity growth in social online games.

We present the results of deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry of the dwarf galaxy DDO 68-C, proposed as possibly associated with the isolated peculiar dwarf DDO 68. The new data resolve for the first time the stars of DDO 68-C down to well below the tip of the Red Giant Branch (RGB), revealing a low mass (M$_{*}$ $\sim$ 1.5 $\times$ 10$^7$ M$_{\odot}$) star forming galaxy with a backbone of old stars. By means of a fully homogeneous analysis and using the RGB tip as a standard candle, we find that DDO 68 and DDO 68-C lie at the same distance from us, within the uncertainties (D = 12.6 $\pm$ 0.3 Mpc and D = 12.7 $\pm$ 0.4 Mpc, respectively), thus confirming that the two dwarfs are physically associated. While paired dwarf galaxies with mutual projected distance similar to DDO 68 and DDO 68-C are not exceptional in the Lynx-Cancer Void where they live, DDO 68 remains a unicum as, in addition to the newly confirmed companion, it records the evidence of at least two other satellites., Comment: ApJ in press, 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Recent studies have demonstrated that magnetization switching in ferromagnets can be achieved through adsorbing chiral molecules on the surface without the need for current or external magnetic fields, offering a low-power mechanism for applications in spintronic devices. Opposite chirality molecules cause opposite direction reversals of magnetization through the chiral-induced spin switching (CISS) mechanism. In this study, we demonstrate bidirectional magnetization switching in thin films of ferrimagnetic insulator TmIG using a single chirality molecule - a Cu metallopolymer of D-leucine. Through circular dichroism and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we determined that switching between different magnetic orientations is associated with interactions of the D-leucine with the two distinct sublattices of the Fe ions in the TmIG, at octahedral and tetrahedral sites. Our study demonstrates the unexpected versatility of the CISS mechanism for magnetization switching in ferrimagnets using single chirality materials, thereby expanding the potential applications of chiral molecule adsorption-induced magnetization flipping., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

We report the first detections of [Ne V] 14.3 {\mu}m and [Ne VI] 7.7 {\mu}m at high confidence (S/N>=6) in the nuclear region of the nearby spiral galaxy M83. Emission line maps of these high ionization lines show several compact structures. Specifically, the [Ne VI] emission is located at 140 pc from the optical nucleus and appears as a point source of size ~<18 pc (FWHM =<0.8"). We investigate the possible source of this extreme emission through comparison with photoionization models and ancillary data. We find that photoionization models of fast radiative shocks are able to reproduce the observed high excitation emission line fluxes only for the lowest preshock density available in the library, n =0.01 cm^-3. Additionally, tailored active galactic nuclei (AGN) photoionization models assuming a two-zone structure are compatible with the observed high ionization fluxes. Our simple AGN model shows that the emission at the location of the [Ne VI] source can be the result of a cloud being ionized by the radiation cone of an AGN. We stress, however, that to definitively confirm an AGN as the main source of the observed emission, more complex modeling accounting for different geometries is required. We establish a formula for structure constants of the quantum mirror to a log Calabi Yau surface $(Y,D)$ in terms of descendent logarithmic Gromov--Witten invariants of $(Y,D)$. Our result generalises the weak Frobenius structure conjecture for surfaces to the $q$-refined setting, and is proved by relating these invariants to counts of quantum broken lines in the associated quantum scattering diagram., Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures

Nearby blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs) share similar properties with objects from the Epoch of Reionization revealed by JWST, in terms of low stellar mass, low metallicity and high specific star-formation rate. Thus, they represent ideal local laboratories for detailed multi-wavelength studies to understand their properties and the mechanisms shaping them. We report the first JWST MIRI/MRS observations of the BCD SBS 0335-052 E, analyzing MIR emission lines tracing different levels of ionization (e.g., [NeII], [SIV], [NeIII], [OIV], [NeV]) of the ionized gas. SBS 0335-052 E MIR emission is characterized by a bright point source, located in one of the youngest and most embedded stellar clusters ($t\sim3$ Myr, $A_V\sim20$), and underlying extended high-ionization emission (i.e., [OIV], [NeV]) from the surroundings of the older and less dusty stellar clusters ($t< 20 $ Myr, $A_V\sim8$). From the comparison with state-of-the-art models, we can exclude shocks, X-ray binaries, and old stellar populations as the main sources of the high ionization. Interestingly, a 4-16% contribution of a $\sim10^5$ M$_\odot$ intermediate massive black hole (IMBH) is needed to justify the strong [NeV]/[NeII] and would be consistent with optical/UV line ratios from previous studies. However, even IMBH models cannot explain the strongest [OIV]/[NeIII]. Also, star-forming models (regardless of including X-ray binaries) struggle to reproduce even the lower ionization line ratios (e.g., [SIV]/[NeII]) typically observed in BCDs. Overall, while current models suggest the need to account for an accreting IMBH in this high-$z$ analog, limitations still exist in predicting high-ionization emission lines (I.P. $>54$ eV) when modeling these low-metallicity environments, thus other sources of ionization cannot be fully ruled out., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

Instruction set architectures are complex, with hundreds of registers and instructions that can modify dozens of them during execution, variably on each instance. Prose-style ISA specifications struggle to capture these intricacies of the ISAs, where often the important details about a single register are spread out across hundreds of pages of documentation. Ensuring that all ISA-state is swapped in context switch implementations of privileged software requires meticulous examination of these pages. This manual process is tedious and error-prone. We propose a tool called Sailor that leverages machine-readable ISA specifications written in Sail to automate this task. Sailor determines the ISA-state necessary to swap during the context switch using the data collected from Sail and a novel algorithm to classify ISA-state as security-sensitive. Using Sailor's output, we identify three different classes of mishandled ISA-state across four open-source confidential computing systems. We further reveal five distinct security vulnerabilities that can be exploited using the mishandled ISA-state. Phylogenetic analysis traditionally relies on labor-intensive manual extraction of morphological traits, limiting its scalability for large datasets. Recent advances in deep learning offer the potential to automate this process, but the effectiveness of different morphological representations for phylogenetic trait extraction remains poorly understood. In this study, we compare the performance of deep learning models using three distinct morphological representations - full segmentations, binary masks, and Fourier descriptors of beetle outlines. We test this on the Rove-Tree-11 dataset, a curated collection of images from 215 rove beetle species. Our results demonstrate that the mask-based model outperformed the others, achieving a normalized Align Score of 0.33 plus/minus 0.02 on the test set, compared to 0.45 plus/minus 0.01 for the Fourier-based model and 0.39 plus/minus 0.07 for the segmentation-based model. The performance of the mask-based model likely reflects its ability to capture shape features while taking advantage of the depth and capacity of the ResNet50 architecture. These results also indicate that dorsal textural features, at least in this group of beetles, may be of lowered phylogenetic relevance, though further investigation is necessary to confirm this. In contrast, the Fourier-based model suffered from reduced capacity and occasional inaccuracies in outline approximations, particularly in fine structures like legs. Modeling detector response is a key challenge in time projection chambers. We cast this problem as an unpaired point cloud translation task, between data collected from simulations and from experimental runs. Effective translation can assist with both noise rejection and the construction of high-fidelity simulators. Building on recent work in diffusion probabilistic models, we present a novel framework for performing this mapping. We present recommendations for how to improve reproducibility in the field of condensed matter physics. This area of physics has consistently produced both fundamental insights into the functioning of matter as well as transformative inventions. Our recommendations result from a collaboration that includes researchers in academia and government laboratories, scientific journalists, legal professionals, representatives of publishers, professional societies, and other experts. The group met in person in May 2024 at a conference at the University of Pittsburgh to discuss the growing challenges related to research reproducibility in condensed matter physics. We discuss best practices and policies at all stages of the scientific process to safeguard the value condensed matter research brings to society. We look forward to comments and suggestions, especially regarding subfield-specific recommendations, and will incorporate them into the next version of the report.

Machine learning (ML) models can be effective for forecasting the dynamics of unknown systems from time-series data, but they often require large amounts of data and struggle to generalize across systems with varying dynamics. Combined, these issues make forecasting from short time series particularly challenging. To address this problem, we introduce Meta-learning for Tailored Forecasting from Related Time Series (METAFORS), which uses related systems with longer time-series data to supplement limited data from the system of interest. By leveraging a library of models trained on related systems, METAFORS builds tailored models to forecast system evolution with limited data. Using a reservoir computing implementation and testing on simulated chaotic systems, we demonstrate METAFORS' ability to predict both short-term dynamics and long-term statistics, even when test and related systems exhibit significantly different behaviors and the available data are scarce, highlighting its robustness and versatility in data-limited scenarios., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures

This study evaluates the potential of generative models, trained on historical ERA5 reanalysis data, for simulating windstorms over the UK. Four generative models, including a standard GAN, a WGAN-GP, a U-net diffusion model, and a diffusion-GAN were assessed based on their ability to replicate spatial and statistical characteristics of windstorms. Different models have distinct strengths and limitations. The standard GAN displayed broader variability and limited alignment on the PCA dimensions. The WGAN-GP had a more balanced performance but occasionally misrepresented extreme events. The U-net diffusion model produced high-quality spatial patterns but consistently underestimated windstorm intensities. The diffusion-GAN performed better than the other models in general but overestimated extremes. An ensemble approach combining the strengths of these models could potentially improve their overall reliability. This study provides a foundation for such generative models in meteorological research and could potentially be applied in windstorm analysis and risk assessment., Comment: 42 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables. The Euclid mission is generating a vast amount of imaging data in four broadband filters at high angular resolution. This will allow the detailed study of mass, metallicity, and stellar populations across galaxies, which will constrain their formation and evolutionary pathways. Transforming the Euclid imaging for large samples of galaxies into maps of physical parameters in an efficient and reliable manner is an outstanding challenge. We investigate the power and reliability of machine learning techniques to extract the distribution of physical parameters within well-resolved galaxies. We focus on estimating stellar mass surface density, mass-averaged stellar metallicity and age. We generate noise-free, synthetic high-resolution imaging data in the Euclid photometric bands for a set of 1154 galaxies from the TNG50 cosmological simulation. The images are generated with the SKIRT radiative transfer code, taking into account the complex 3D distribution of stellar populations and interstellar dust attenuation. We use a machine learning framework to map the idealised mock observational data to the physical parameters on a pixel-by-pixel basis. We find that stellar mass surface density can be accurately recovered with a $\leq 0.130 {\rm \,dex}$ scatter. Conversely, stellar metallicity and age estimates are, as expected, less robust, but still contain significant information which originates from underlying correlations at a sub-kpc scale between stellar mass surface density and stellar population properties.

The use of $\alpha$-tantalum in superconducting circuits has enabled a considerable improvement of the coherence time of transmon qubits. The standard approach to grow $\alpha$-tantalum thin films on silicon involves heating the substrate, which takes several hours per deposition and prevents the integration of this material with wafers containing temperature-sensitive components. We report a detailed experimental study of an alternative growth method of $\alpha$-tantalum on silicon, which is achieved at room temperature through the use of a niobium seed layer. Despite a substantially higher density of oxygen-rich grain boundaries in the films sputtered at room temperature, resonators made from these films are found to have state-of-the-art quality factors, comparable to resonators fabricated from tantalum grown at high temperature. This finding challenges previous assumptions about correlations between material properties and microwave loss of superconducting thin films, and opens a new avenue for the integration of tantalum into fabrication flows with limited thermal budget.

The Gaia mission has triggered major developments in the field of Galactic dynamics in recent years, which we discuss in this review. The structure and kinematics of all Galactic components - disc, bar/bulge and halo - are now mapped in great detail not only in the Solar neighbourhood, but across a large part of the Milky Way. The dramatic improvements in the coverage and precision of observations revealed various disequilibrium processes, such as perturbations in the Galactic disc and the deformations of the outer halo, which are partly attributed to the interaction with satellite galaxies. The knowledge of the gravitational potential at all scales has also advanced considerably, but we are still far from having a consistent view on the key properties of the Galaxy, such as the bar pattern speed or the mass profile and shape of the dark halo. The complexity and interplay of several dynamical processes makes the interpretation of observational data challenging, and it is fair to say that more theoretical effort is needed to fully reap the fruit of the Gaia revolution., Comment: Review article in the special issue of New Astronomy Reviews "Gaia, the first crop of discoveries"; minor updates to match the published version

Deep surveys reveal tidal debris and associated compact stellar systems. Euclid's unique combination of capabilities (spatial resolution, depth, and wide sky coverage) will make it a groundbreaking tool for galactic archaeology in the local Universe, bringing low surface brightness (LSB) science into the era of large-scale astronomical surveys. Euclid's Early Release Observations (ERO) demonstrate this potential with a field of view that includes several galaxies in the Dorado group. In this paper, we aim to derive from this image a mass assembly scenario for its main galaxies: NGC 1549, NGC 1553, and NGC 1546. We detect internal and external diffuse structures, and identify candidate globular clusters (GCs). By analysing the colours and distributions of the diffuse structures and candidate GCs, we can place constraints on the galaxies' mass assembly and merger histories. The results show that feature morphology, surface brightness, colours, and GC density profiles are consistent with galaxies that have undergone different merger scenarios. We classify NGC 1549 as a pure elliptical galaxy that has undergone a major merger. NGC 1553 appears to have recently transitioned from a late-type galaxy to early type, after a series of radial minor to intermediate mergers. NGC 1546 is a rare specimen of galaxy with an undisturbed disk and a prominent diffuse stellar halo, which we infer has been fed by minor mergers and then disturbed by the tidal effect from NGC 1553. Finally, we identify limitations specific to the observing conditions of this ERO, in particular stray light in the visible and persistence in the near-infrared bands. Once these issues are addressed and the extended emission from LSB objects is preserved by the data-processing pipeline, the Euclid Wide Survey will allow studies of the local Universe to be extended to statistical ensembles over a large part of the extragalactic sky., Comment: 25 pages, 20 figures

One of the most elusive goals in myographic prosthesis control is the ability to reliably decode continuous positions simultaneously across multiple degrees-of-freedom. Goal: To demonstrate dexterous, natural, biomimetic finger and wrist control of the highly advanced robotic Modular Prosthetic Limb. Methods: We combine sequential temporal regression models and reinforcement learning using myographic signals to predict continuous simultaneous predictions of 7 finger and wrist degrees-of-freedom for 9 non-amputee human subjects in a minimally-constrained freeform training process. Results: We demonstrate highly dexterous 7 DoF position-based regression for prosthesis control from EMG signals, with significantly lower error rates than traditional approaches (p < 0.001) and nearly zero prediction response time delay (p < 0.001). Their performance can be continuously improved at any time using our freeform reinforcement process. Significance: We have demonstrated the most dexterous, biomimetic, and natural prosthesis control performance ever obtained from the surface EMG signal. Our reinforcement approach allowed us to abandon standard training protocols and simply allow the subject to move in any desired way while our models adapt. Conclusions: This work redefines the state-of-the-art in myographic decoding in terms of the reliability, responsiveness, and movement complexity available from prosthesis control systems. Our understanding of the Milky Way disk is rapidly improving with the recent advent of the high quality and vast amount of observational data. We summarize our current view of the structure of the Milky Way disk, such as the masses and sizes of the gas and stellar disks, and the position and motion of the Sun in the disk. We also discuss the different definitions of the thick and thin disks of the Milky Way, the non-axisymmetric structures of the stellar disk, such as the bar and spiral arms, and the radial migration which can be triggered by these non-axisymmetric stellar structures. After the revolutionary data from the European Space Agency's Gaia mission, our view of the Milky Way disk has been transformed to a non-equilibrium system with many complicated structures in stellar kinematic distribution. We also summarize the recent findings of Galactoseismology research. These detailed observational data provide the archaeological information for us to unveil the formation and evolution history of the Milky Way disk, with the aid of the high-resolution numerical simulations of the Milky Way-like galaxy formation. The problem of decentralized multi-robot patrol has previously been approached primarily with hand-designed strategies for minimization of 'idlenes' over the vertices of a graph-structured environment. Here we present two lightweight neural network-based strategies to tackle this problem, and show that they significantly outperform existing strategies in both idleness minimization and against an intelligent intruder model, as well as presenting an examination of robustness to communication failure. Our results also indicate important considerations for future strategy design.

The tuning of magnetic properties through electrochemical loading of hydrogen has recently attracted significant interest as a way to manipulate magnetic devices with electric fields. In this paper we investigate quantitatively the magneto-ionic effect of hydrogen uptake on the magnetic properties of rare-earth transition metal alloy Tb$_x$Co$_{(100-x)}$ in the composition range of $x=10-39$ at.\% using ion implantation. Using this technique we are able to link changes in magnetic behaviour to exact concentrations of hydrogen, isolated from the movement of any other ions that would be a factor in electrochemical studies. The composition of the alloy has been varied alongside the hydrogen dose to characterize the effect of progressive hydrogen loading on the full range of $x$ displaying out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy. We find large changes in two important properties: the compensation composition and the Co-rich in-plane to out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy transition composition, both of which move by 6 at.\% towards higher Tb concentrations after hydrogen implantation. This shift in composition does not increase with a larger dose. The accelerating trend of active metasurfaces -- such as those incorporating non-Foster matching, programmable control, or space-time modulation -- adds complexity to the computational electromagnetic (CEM) simulation landscape. In this work, we present an equivalent circuit model (ECM) for a particular periodic array element -- the dogbone element -- that incorporates an arbitrary sub-cell electronic circuit. The ECM is capable of predicting the overall surface impedance with any changes in the circuit's impedance. Three full-wave CEM simulations fully determine the EC, and the scattering parameters computed from the ECM for an embedded circuit, however complex, should be substantially similar to those produced by the full-wave code. With metasurfaces for which it is possible to obtain an ECM by this method, the reflection or transmission behavior of the surface under varying circuit conditions can be computed quickly without need of any further full-wave solutions. After highlighting the importance of fully characterizing parasitics in embedded components, we apply the method to the design of a varactor-based tunable metasurface, which upon fabrication and focused beam measurement demonstrates excellent model-measure agreement., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

We report on a search for millicharged particles (mCPs) produced in cosmic ray proton atmospheric interactions using data collected during the first science run of the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment. The mCPs produced by two processes -- meson decay and proton bremsstrahlung -- are considered in this study. This search utilized a novel signature unique to liquid xenon (LXe) time projection chambers (TPCs), allowing sensitivity to mCPs with masses ranging from 10 to 1000 MeV/c$^2$ and fractional charges between 0.001 and 0.02 of the electron charge e. With an exposure of 60 live days and a 5.5 tonne fiducial mass, we observed no significant excess over background. This represents the first experimental search for atmospheric mCPs and the first search for mCPs using an underground LXe experiment.

The detailed feeding and feedback mechanisms of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are not yet well known. For low-luminosity and obscured AGN, as well as late-type galaxies, determining the central black hole (BH) masses is challenging. Our goal with the GATOS sample is to study circum-nuclear regions and better estimate BH masses with more precision than scaling relations offer. Using ALMA's high spatial resolution, we resolve CO(3-2) emissions within ~100 pc around the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in seven GATOS galaxies to estimate their BH masses when sufficient gas is present. We study seven bright ($L_{AGN}(14-150\mathrm{keV}) \geq 10^{42}\mathrm{erg/s}$), nearby (<28 Mpc) galaxies from the GATOS core sample. For comparison, we searched the literature for previous BH mass estimates and made additional calculations using the \mbh~ - $\sigma$ relation and the fundamental plane of BH activity. We developed a supervised machine learning method to estimate BH masses from position-velocity diagrams or first-moment maps using ALMA CO(3-2) observations. Numerical simulations with a wide range of parameters created the training, validation, and test sets. Seven galaxies provided enough gas for BH mass estimations: NGC4388, NGC5506, NGC5643, NGC6300, NGC7314, NGC7465, and NGC~7582. Our BH masses, ranging from 6.39 to 7.18 log$(M_{BH}/M_\odot)$, align with previous estimates. Additionally, our machine learning method provides robust error estimations with confidence intervals and offers greater potential than scaling relations. This work is a first step toward an automated \mbh estimation method using machine learning.

Humans have an exquisite sense of touch which robotic and prosthetic systems aim to recreate. We developed algorithms to create neuron-like (neuromorphic) spiking representations of texture that are invariant to the scanning speed and contact force applied in the sensing process. The spiking representations are based on mimicking activity from mechanoreceptors in human skin and further processing up to the brain. The neuromorphic encoding process transforms analog sensor readings into speed and force invariant spiking representations in three sequential stages: the force invariance module (in the analog domain), the spiking activity encoding module (transforms from analog to spiking domain), and the speed invariance module (in the spiking domain). The algorithms were tested on a tactile texture dataset collected in 15 speed-force conditions. An offline texture classification system built on the invariant representations has higher classification accuracy, improved computational efficiency, and increased capability to identify textures explored in novel speed-force conditions. The speed invariance algorithm was adapted to a real-time human-operated texture classification system. Similarly, the invariant representations improved classification accuracy, computational efficiency, and capability to identify textures explored in novel conditions. The invariant representation is even more crucial in this context due to human imprecision which seems to the classification system as a novel condition. These results demonstrate that invariant neuromorphic representations enable better performing neurorobotic tactile sensing systems. Robot swarms have the potential to help groups of people with social tasks, given their ability to scale to large numbers of robots and users. Developing multi-human-swarm interaction is therefore crucial to support multiple people interacting with the swarm simultaneously - which is an area that is scarcely researched, unlike single-human, single-robot or single-human, multi-robot interaction. Moreover, most robots are still confined to laboratory settings. In this paper, we present our work with MOSAIX, a swarm of robot Tiles, that facilitated ideation at a science museum. 63 robots were used as a swarm of smart sticky notes, collecting input from the public and aggregating it based on themes, providing an evolving visualization tool that engaged visitors and fostered their participation. Our contribution lies in creating a large-scale (63 robots and 294 attendees) public event, with a completely decentralized swarm system in real-life settings. We also discuss learnings we obtained that might help future researchers create multi-human-swarm interaction with the public.

The VLT Survey Telescope Survey of Mass Assembly and Structural Hierarchy (VST-SMASH) aims to detect tidal features and remnants around very nearby galaxies, a unique and essential diagnostic of the hierarchical nature of galaxy formation. Leveraging optimal sky conditions at ESO's Paranal Observatory, combined with the VST's multi-band optical filters, VST-SMASH aims to be the definitive survey of stellar streams and tidal remnants in the Local Volume, targeting a low surface-brightness limit of $\mu \sim$ 30 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ in the g and r bands, and $\mu \sim$ 28 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ in the i band, in a volume-limited sample of local galaxies within 11 Mpc and the Euclid footprint., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, published in the ESO Messenger 193

Thin films and van der Waals heterostructures derived from two-dimensional solids offer enormous potential for a broad range of novel, energy efficient devices, however, their use is currently hampered by slow, labor-intensive fabrication methods often employing hazardous chemicals. We demonstrate a novel technique for rapid, low-cost and environmentally-friendly production of ultra-thin films and van der Waals heterostructures of two-dimensional solids from aqueous surfactant-stabilized suspensions, which we term `Liquid Interface Deposition'. Films are produced by the transfer of platelets of two-dimensional materials assembled at the interface between two immiscible liquids (water and dicholoromethane), at which surfactants which stabilize the two-dimensional materials in the aqueous phase are `stripped' from the platelets due to preferential partitioning of the surfactant to the non-aqeuous phase. The approach is generic to two-dimensional materials which can be stabilized in aqueous suspension by a surfactant and the resulting films can then be transferred to an arbitrary substrate by a range of approaches. The generic applicability of this technique is demonstrated through production of thin films on a variety of substrates, deposition of transparent, highly conductive, graphene films with conductivities between $7.7 \times 10^{3} - 1.26\times 10^{5}~\textrm{S m}^{-1}$ and transmittances of 55-75%, and by the fabrication of van der Waals heterostructures of MoS$_2$, WS$_2$, and few-layer graphene.

Fluid velocimetry is fundamental to a breadth of applications spanning academia and industry, however velocimetry at high temporal resolution is often prohibitively costly. Here, we introduce a Fast and InExpensive Velocimeter (FIEVel) based on an optical mouse sensor. At its core, the optical mouse sensor consists of a small pixel array that acquires image data at high rates, with onboard hardware to compute and output motion in two orthogonal axes directly. By adapting this widely available integrated circuit to fluid velocimetry, we demonstrate that FIEVel is capable of resolving two components of velocity non-intrusively in the bulk of a flowing fluid at rates up to 6.4 kHz, at orders of magnitude lower cost than traditional velocimetry devices. We demonstrate and validate the velocimeter across a range of flows, operating conditions, and illumination strategies. As a sample application, we measure the temporal spectrum of a grid-generated turbulent flow and show excellent agreement with traditional Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) using a high-speed camera.

While confinement is understood to increase the power and thrust coefficients of cross-flow turbines, how the optimal rotor geometry changes with the blockage ratio -- defined as the ratio between the array projected area and the channel cross-sectional area -- has not been systematically explored. Here, the interplay between rotor geometry and the blockage ratio on turbine performance is investigated experimentally with an array of two identical cross-flow turbines at blockage ratios from 35% to 55%. Three geometric parameters are varied -- the number of blades, the chord-to-radius ratio, and the preset pitch angle -- resulting in 180 unique combinations of rotor geometry and blockage ratio. While the optimal chord-to-radius ratio and preset pitch angle do not depend on the blockage ratio, the optimal blade count increases with the blockage ratio -- an inversion of the relationship between efficiency and blade count typically observed at lower blockage. To explore the combined effects of rotor geometry, rotation rate, and the blockage ratio on array performance, we utilize two bluff-body models: dynamic solidity (which relates thrust to the rotor geometry and kinematics) and Maskell-inspired linear momentum theory (which describes the array-channel interaction as a function of the blockage ratio and thrust). By combining these models, we demonstrate that the array time-average thrust coefficient increases with dynamic solidity in a manner that is self-similar across blockage ratios. Overall, these results highlight key design principles for cross-flow turbines in confined flow and provide insights into the similarities between the dynamics of cross-flow turbines and bluff bodies at high blockage., Comment: SUBMITTED to the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy. The dielectric layers surrounding a metasurface have a large impact on its frequency and angular response. The notion of effective permittivity captures this dependence by suggesting that a layered dielectric environment will perturb metasurface resonances in the same manner as an infinite environment of that effective permittivity. A model for effective permittivity is presented in this work. In contrast to previous empirically derived models, this multi-term model is a robust approximation based on the modal expansion of fields at the metasurface. A simple dipole metasurface array is simulated to demonstrate the accuracy of the model, which is shown to be improved over other models. Finally, we show that it is possible for dielectric layers to produce an effective permeability different than unity, which must be considered in conjunction with higher-order equivalent circuit modeling to effectively predict metasurface impedance variation., Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures. The XLZD collaboration is developing a two-phase xenon time projection chamber with an active mass of 60 to 80 t capable of probing the remaining WIMP-nucleon interaction parameter space down to the so-called neutrino fog. In this work we show that, based on the performance of currently operating detectors using the same technology and a realistic reduction of radioactivity in detector materials, such an experiment will also be able to competitively search for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{136}$Xe using a natural-abundance xenon target. XLZD can reach a 3$\sigma$ discovery potential half-life of 5.7$\times$10$^{27}$ yr (and a 90% CL exclusion of 1.3$\times$10$^{28}$ yr) with 10 years of data taking, corresponding to a Majorana mass range of 7.3-31.3 meV (4.8-20.5 meV). XLZD will thus exclude the inverted neutrino mass ordering parameter space and will start to probe the normal ordering region for most of the nuclear matrix elements commonly considered by the community., Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures

This report describes the experimental strategy and technologies for a next-generation xenon observatory sensitive to dark matter and neutrino physics. The detector will have an active liquid xenon target mass of 60-80 tonnes and is proposed by the XENON-LUX-ZEPLIN-DARWIN (XLZD) collaboration. The design is based on the mature liquid xenon time projection chamber technology of the current-generation experiments, LZ and XENONnT. A baseline design and opportunities for further optimization of the individual detector components are discussed. The experiment envisaged here has the capability to explore parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter down to the neutrino fog, with a 3$\sigma$ evidence potential for the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross sections as low as $3\times10^{-49}\rm cm^2$ (at 40 GeV/c$^2$ WIMP mass). The observatory is also projected to have a 3$\sigma$ observation potential of neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe at a half-life of up to $5.7\times 10^{27}$ years. We report results of a search for nuclear recoils induced by weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter using the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) two-phase xenon time projection chamber. This analysis uses a total exposure of $4.2\pm0.1$ tonne-years from 280 live days of LZ operation, of which $3.3\pm0.1$ tonne-years and 220 live days are new. A technique to actively tag background electronic recoils from $^{214}$Pb $\beta$ decays is featured for the first time. Enhanced electron-ion recombination is observed in two-neutrino double electron capture decays of $^{124}$Xe, representing a noteworthy new background. After removal of artificial signal-like events injected into the data set to mitigate analyzer bias, we find no evidence for an excess over expected backgrounds. World-leading constraints are placed on spin-independent (SI) and spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross sections for masses $\geq$9 GeV/$c^2$. The strongest SI exclusion set is $2.1\times10^{-48}$ cm$^{2}$ at the 90% confidence level at a mass of 36 GeV/$c^2$, and the best SI median sensitivity achieved is $5.0\times10^{-48}$ cm$^{2}$ for a mass of 40 GeV/$c^2$., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. Long Short Term Memory networks (LSTMs) are used to build single models that predict river discharge across many catchments. These models offer greater accuracy than models trained on each catchment independently if using the same data. However, the same data is rarely available for all catchments. This prevents the use of variables available only in some catchments, such as historic river discharge or upstream discharge. The only existing method that allows for optional variables requires all variables to be considered in the initial training of the model, limiting its transferability to new catchments. To address this limitation, we develop the Hydra-LSTM. The Hydra-LSTM processes variables used across all catchments and variables used in only some catchments separately to allow general training and use of catchment-specific data in individual catchments. The bulk of the model can be shared across catchments, maintaining the benefits of multi-catchment models to generalise, while also benefitting from the advantages of using bespoke data. We apply this methodology to 1 day-ahead river discharge prediction in the Western US, as next-day river discharge prediction is the first step towards prediction across longer time scales. We obtain state-of-the-art performance, generating more accurate median and quantile predictions than Multi-Catchment and Single-Catchment LSTMs while allowing local forecasters to easily introduce and remove variables from their prediction set. We test the ability of the Hydra-LSTM to incorporate catchment-specific data by introducing historical river discharge as a catchment-specific input, outperforming state-of-the-art models without needing to train an entirely new model.

Multi-agent reinforcement learning is a key method for training multi-robot systems over a series of episodes in which robots are rewarded or punished according to their performance; only once the system is trained to a suitable standard is it deployed in the real world. If the system is not trained enough, the task will likely not be completed and could pose a risk to the surrounding environment. We introduce Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning guided by Language-based Inter-Robot Negotiation (MARLIN), in which the training process requires fewer training episodes to reach peak performance. Robots are equipped with large language models that negotiate and debate a task, producing plans used to guide the policy during training. The approach dynamically switches between using reinforcement learning and large language model-based action negotiation throughout training. This reduces the number of training episodes required, compared to standard multi-agent reinforcement learning, and hence allows the system to be deployed to physical hardware earlier. The performance of this approach is evaluated against multi-agent reinforcement learning, showing that our hybrid method achieves comparable results with significantly reduced training time., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Semiconducting transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) moir\'e superlattice provides an exciting platform for manipulating excitons. The in-situ control of moir\'e potential confined exciton would usher in unprecedented functions of excitonic devices but remains challenging. Meanwhile, as a dipolar composite boson, interlayer exciton in the type-II aligned TMDC moir\'e superlattice strongly interacts with fermionic charge carriers. Here, we demonstrate active manipulation of the exciton diffusivity by tuning their interplay with correlated carriers in moir\'e potentials. At fractional fillings where carriers are known to form generalized Wigner crystals, we observed suppressed diffusivity of exciton. In contrast, in Fermi liquid states where carriers dynamically populate all moir\'e traps, the repulsive carrier-exciton interaction can effectively reduce the moir\'e potential confinement seen by the exciton, leading to enhanced diffusivity with the increase of the carrier density. Notably, the exciton diffusivity is enhanced by orders of magnitude near the Mott insulator state, and the enhancement is much more pronounced for the 0-degree than the 60-degree aligned WS2/WSe2 heterobilayer due to the more localized nature of interlayer excitons. Our study inspires further engineering and controlling exotic excitonic states in TMDC moir\'e superlattices for fascinating quantum phenomena and novel excitonic devices.

We present a spatially-resolved (~3 pc pix$^{-1}$) analysis of the distribution, kinematics, and excitation of warm H2 gas in the nuclear starburst region of M83. Our JWST/MIRI IFU spectroscopy reveals a clumpy reservoir of warm H2 (> 200 K) with a mass of ~2.3 x 10$^{5}$ Msun in the area covered by all four MRS channels. We additionally use the [Ne II] 12.8 ${\mu}$m and [Ne III] 15.5 ${\mu}$m lines as tracers of the star formation rate, ionizing radiation hardness, and kinematics of the ionized ISM, finding tantalizing connections to the H2 properties and to the ages of the underlying stellar populations. Finally, qualitative comparisons to the trove of public, high-spatial-resolution multiwavelength data available on M83 shows that our MRS spectroscopy potentially traces all stages of the process of creating massive star clusters, from the embedded proto-cluster phase through the dispersion of ISM from stellar feedback., Comment: 21 pages, 11+1 figures; submitted to ApJ

We perform the first global QCD analysis of electron-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering and related high-energy data including the beyond the Standard Model $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson, $Z'$. Contrary to the dark photon case, we find no improvement in the $\chi^2$ relative to the baseline result. The finding allows us to place exclusion limits on the coupling constant of the $Z'$ with mass in the range $M_{Z'} = 2$ to 160 GeV., Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, 1 table. Early identification and instruction aimed at addressing potential reading difficulties is the key to preventing prolonged difficulties in learning to read and ensuring that all students are reading with proficiency by the end of third grade. Tier 1 core reading curricula needs to be: (a) evidence based, (b) systematic and structured, (c) encompass explicit word reading skills and rich language and knowledge development. Tier 2 supports and interventions and Tier 3 intensive interventions need to be: (a) evidence- based, (b) targeted towards the unique needs of individual students and instructional contexts, (c) based on assessment. Universal Screening of students for signs of dyslexia and other reading difficulties beginning in kindergarten is one of the first steps in this prevention process. The use of evidence-based practices and materials in all tiers of instruction is key to the development of skilled readers. Systematic instruction that is coherent across instructional contexts and guided by a clear scope and sequence is essential. The use of reliable and valid screening, as well as diagnostic, progress monitoring, and assessment tools ensures that further assessments, intervention, and instruction are guided by data. The use of a range of explicit evidence-based instructional approaches ensure that all students receive the instruction they need. Educator training in the complexities of reading development and difficulties empowers educators to teach, assess, and progress monitor the development of foundational reading skills, understand student data, and use data to guide instruction.
