A generalization of the second main theorem of tropical Nevanlinna theory is presented for noncontinuous piecewise linear functions and for tropical hypersurfaces without requiring a growth condition. The method of proof is novel and significantly more straightforward than previously known proofs. The tropical analogue of the Nevanlinna inverse problem is formulated and solved for tropical meromorphic functions and tropical hypersurfaces.

Wood deformation, in particular when subject to compression, exhibits scale-free avalanche-like behavior as well as structure-dependent localization of deformation. We have taken three-dimensional (3D) x-ray tomographs during compression with constant stress rate loading. Using digital volume correlation, we obtain the local total strain during the experiment and compare it to the global strain and acoustic emission. The wood cells collapse layer by layer throughout the sample starting from the softest parts, i.e., the spring wood. As the damage progresses, more and more of the softwood layers throughout the sample collapse, which indicates damage spreading instead of localization. In 3D, one can see a fat-tailed local strain rate distribution, indicating that inside the softwood layers, the damage occurs in localized spots. The observed log-normal strain distribution is in agreement with this view of the development of independent local collapses or irreversible deformation events. A key feature in the mechanical behavior of wood is then in the complex interaction of localized deformation between or among the annual rings.

We study the approximate state preparation problem on noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers by applying a genetic algorithm to generate quantum circuits for state preparation. The algorithm can account for the specific characteristics of the physical machine in the evaluation of circuits, such as the native gate set and qubit connectivity. We use our genetic algorithm to optimize the circuits provided by the low-rank state preparation algorithm introduced by Araujo et al., and find substantial improvements to the fidelity in preparing Haar random states with a limited number of CNOT gates. Moreover, we observe that already for a 5-qubit quantum processor with limited qubit connectivity and significant noise levels (IBM Falcon 5T), the maximal fidelity for Haar random states is achieved by a short approximate state preparation circuit instead of the exact preparation circuit. We also present a theoretical analysis of approximate state preparation circuit complexity to motivate our findings. Abundance spectra of (CO$_2$)$_N$ clusters (up to $N \approx$ 500) acquired under a wide range of adiabatic expansion conditions are analyzed within the evaporative ensemble framework. Analysis reveals that cluster stability functions display strikingly universal patterns for all expansion conditions. These patterns reflect the inherent properties of individual clusters. From this analysis the size-dependent cluster binding energies are determined, shell and subshell closing sizes identified, and cuboctahedral packing ordering for sizes above $N \approx 130$ is confirmed. Issue trackers, such as Jira, have become the prevalent collaborative tools in software engineering for managing issues, such as requirements, development tasks, and software bugs. However, issue trackers inherently focus on the lifecycle of single issues, although issues have and express dependencies on other issues that constitute issue dependency networks in large complex collaborative projects. The objective of this study is to develop supportive solutions for the improved management of dependent issues in an issue tracker. This study follows the Design Science methodology, consisting of eliciting drawbacks and constructing and evaluating a solution and system. The study was carried out in the context of The Qt Company's Jira, which exemplifies an actively used, almost two-decade-old issue tracker with over 100,000 issues. The drawbacks capture how users operate with issue trackers to handle issue information in large, collaborative, and long-lived projects. The basis of the solution is to keep issues and dependencies as separate objects and automatically construct an issue graph. Dependency detections complement the issue graph by proposing missing dependencies, while consistency checks and diagnoses identify conflicting issue priorities and release assignments. Jira's plugin and service-based system architecture realize the functional and quality concerns of the system implementation. We show how to adopt the intelligent supporting techniques of an issue tracker in a complex use context and a large data-set. We present the first high-resolution measurements and rotational analysis of the fundamental asymmetric stretching vibrational band ${\nu_3}(F_2)$ of radiocarbon methane. A spectrometer consisting of a mid-infrared continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator and a cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic detector was employed to determine the wavenumbers of 43 rovibrational lines. A spectroscopic model could reproduce all the observed transition wavenumbers within the accuracy of the experiment. Our work contributes to the development of radiocarbon methane detectors based on laser spectroscopy.

We report a photoacoustic spectroscopy setup with a high-power mid-infrared frequency comb as the light source. The setup is used in broadband spectroscopy of radiocarbon methane. Due to the high sensitivity of a cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic cell and the high power light source, we can reach a detection limit below 100 ppb in a broadband measurement with a sample volume of only a few milliliters. The first infrared spectrum of $^{14}\text{CH}_4$ is reported and given a preliminary assignment. We investigate variations in the linear polarization as well as in the V-band and B-band colour-magnitudes for classical Be star disks. We present two models: disks with enhanced disk density and disks that are tilted or warped from the stellar equatorial plane. In both cases, we predict variation in observable properties of the system as the disk rotates. We use a non-LTE radiative transfer code BEDISK (Sigut & Jones) in combination with a Monte Carlo routine that includes multiple scattering (Halonen et al.) to model classical Be star systems. We find that a disk with an enhanced density region that is one order of magnitude denser than the disk's base density shows as much as $\sim$0.2% variability in the polarization while the polarization position angle varies by $\sim$8\deg. The $\Delta$V magnitude for the same system shows variations of up to $\sim$0.4 magnitude while the $\Delta$(B-V) colour varies by at most $\sim$0.01 magnitude. We find that disks tilted from the equatorial plane at small angles of $\sim$30\deg more strongly reflect the values of polarization and colour-magnitudes reported in the literature than disks tilted at larger angles. For this model, the linear polarization varies by $\sim$0.3%, the polarization position angle varies by $\sim$60\deg, the $\Delta$V magnitude varies up to 0.35 magnitude, and the $\Delta$(B-V) colour varies up to 0.1 magnitude. We find that the enhanced disk density models show ranges of polarization and colour-magnitudes that are commensurate with what is reported in the literature for all sizes of the density enhanced regions. We present a highly sensitive hydrogen fluoride detector based on simple cantilever-enhanced photo-acoustic spectroscopy. A noise equivalent concentration of 5 parts-per-trillion was achieved in 1 s and 650 parts-per-quadrillion in 32 min. The limits were reached with an average optical power of 950 mW using a new continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator at 2.476 \mu m. The achieved normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient was 2.7$\times$10$^{-10}$ Wcm$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1/2}$.

A novel mid-infrared/near-infrared double resonant absorption setup for studying infrared-inactive vibrational states is presented. A strong vibrational transition in the mid-infrared region is excited using an idler beam from a singly resonant continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator, to populate an intermediate vibrational state. High output power of the optical parametric oscillator and the strength of the mid-infrared transition result in efficient population transfer to the intermediate state, which allows measuring secondary transitions from this state with a high signal-to-noise ratio. A secondary, near-infrared transition from the intermediate state is probed using cavity ring down spectroscopy, which provides high sensitivity in this wavelength region. Due to the narrow linewidths of the excitation sources, the rovibrational lines of the secondary transition are measured with sub-Doppler resolution. The setup is used to access a previously unreported symmetric vibrational state of acetylene, $\nu_1+\nu_2+\nu_3+\nu_4^1+\nu_5^{-1}$ in the normal mode notation. Single-photon transitions to this state from the vibrational ground state are forbidden. Ten lines of the newly measured state are observed and fitted with the linear least-squares method to extract the band parameters. The vibrational term value was measured to be at 9775.0018(45) $\text{cm}^{-1}$, the rotational parameter $B$ was 1.162222 $\text{cm}^{-1}$, and the quartic centrifugal distortion parameter $D$ was 3.998(62)$\times 10^{-6} \text{cm}^{-1}$, where the numbers in the parenthesis are one-standard errors in the least significant digits.

We present an experimental study of optical frequency comb generation based on cascaded quadratic nonlinearities inside a continuous-wave-pumped optical parametric oscillator. We demonstrate comb states which produce narrow-linewidth intermode beat note signals, and we verify the mode spacing uniformity of the comb at the Hz level. We also show that spectral quality of the comb can be improved by modulating the parametric gain at a frequency that corresponds to the comb mode spacing. We have reached a high average output power of over 4 W in the near-infrared region, at ~2 {\mu}m.

We acquired Johnson BV photometry of the binary Be disk system delta~Scorpii during its 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 observing seasons and used it to probe the innermost regions of the disk. We found that several disk building events have occurred during this time, resulting in an overall brightening in the V-band and reddening of the system. In addition to these long-term trends, we found cyclical variability in each observing season on timescales between 60 and 100 days. We were able to reproduce the changes in the magnitude and colour of delta Sco using our theoretical models and found that variable mass-loss rates in the range 2.5-7.0x10^{-9} M_{sun}/yr over ~35 days can reproduce the observed increase in brightness., Comment: 15 pages, emulateapj

We report on the effects of two disk properties on the continuum linear polarization signature of classical Be stars. First, we investigate the effect of including metallicity in computing the thermal structure of the circumstellar gas on the resulting polarimetric Balmer jump. The Balmer jump is a distinguishing feature of the polarization signature in these objects and, as such, can be used as a tool for differentiating classical Be stars from similar H alpha-emitters identified through conventional photometric techniques. We find that although low-metallicity environments will have hotter disk temperatures on average, the temperature change alone cannot account for the discrepancy in the frequency of Balmer jumps between low-metallicity and solar-metallicity stellar populations. Second, we investigate the effect of including a global one-armed oscillation in the gas density distribution of the modeled disk. We find that a non-axisymmetric perturbation pattern yields discernible variations in the predicted polarization level. If these density oscillations are present in the inner region of classical Be star disks, the polarimetric variations should produce a periodic signature which can help characterize the dynamical nature of the gas near the star., Comment: Accepted to ApJS on July 22, 2013

We investigate the intrinsic continuum linear polarization from axisymmetric density distributions of gas surrounding classical Be stars during the formation and dissipation of their circumstellar disks. We implement a Monte Carlo calculation of the Stokes parameters with the use of the non-LTE radiative transfer code of Sigut & Jones (2007) to reproduce the continuous polarimetric spectra of classical Be stars. The scattering of light in the nonspherical circumstellar envelopes of classical Be stars produces a distinct polarization signature that can be used to study the physical nature of the scattering environment. In this paper, we highlight the utility of polarimetric measurements as important diagnostics in the modeling of these systems. We illustrate the effects of using self-consistent calculation of the thermal structure of the circumstellar gas on the characteristic wavelength-dependence of the polarization spectrum. In showing that the principal features of the polarization spectrum originate from different parts of the disk, we emphasize the capability of polarimetric observations to trace the evolution of the disk on critical scales. We produce models that approximate the disk formation and dissipation periods and illustrate how the polarimetric properties of these systems can have a pivotal role in determining the mechanism for mass decretion from the central star., Comment: Accepted to ApJ on January 15, 2013
