Rivers serve many societal functions and are one of the most intensively human influenced ecosystems worldwide, and, due to their importance, are included under the monitoring programs of the Water Framework Directive across Europe. Macroinvertebrates play an important role when monitoring running waters for the assessment of their environmental quality due to their reliability as bioindicators and utility in long-term studies. Macroinvertebrates do not constitute a systematic unit but they are formed by a set of different taxa, grouped according to taxonomic ranks, size and habitat preferences. They represent the base of the aquatic food chain, serving as a food source for amphibians, birds, reptiles, fish and humans, and contributing in the organic matter processing. Despite the large amount of data collected on Italian river macroinvertebrates and the increased interest in the study of this group, only few data are available for research scientist and managers. In this paper, we collected and homogenized knowledge on the presence, distribution and abundances of macroinvertebrates taxa inhabiting the River Po catchment (Northern Italy) in the last decade. The data set includes 130,727 records collected between 2007 and 2018 including 143 taxa of macroinvertebrates, mostly identified at family rank level. Moreover, the data set provides information on the geographic distribution of these families and their abundance by sub-catchment, altitude, meso- and micro-habitat.

Abstract Mast cell tumours (MCTs) are the most frequent malignant skin neoplasm in dogs. Due to the difficulty in purifying large numbers of canine neoplastic mast cells, relatively little is known about their properties. A reproducible in vitro model is needed to increase the understanding about the phenotype and functional properties of neoplastic mast cells. In the present study, we describe the establishment of primary cocultures of neoplastic mast cells from canine cutaneous MCTs and cancer-associated fibroblasts. We confirmed the inability of canine neoplastic mast cells to remain viable for long periods in vitro without the addition of growth factors or in vivo passages in mice. Using a transwell system, we observed that mast cell viability was significantly higher when there is cell-to-cell contact in comparison to non-physical contact conditions and that mast cell viability was significantly higher in high-grade than in low-grade derived primary cultures. Moreover, the use of conditioned medium from co-cultured cells led to a significantly higher tumoral mast cell viability when in monoculture. Signalling mechanisms involved in these interactions might be attractive therapeutic targets to block canine MCT progression and deserve more in-depth investigations.

Background: Collateral damage to surrounding healthy tissues has been reported in patients who undergo radiation therapy for pelvic malignancies. This study aimed to evaluate the safety, efficacy and cost efficiency of endoscopic diode laser therapy in patients diagnosed with chronic radiation proctitis (CRP). Methods: The data of 24 patients (median age 78, range 67–90 years) who presented rectal bleeding and were diagnosed with CRP after undergoing high-dose radiotherapy for prostatic cancer and underwent diode laser therapy were evaluated retrospectively. Non-contact fibers were used in the patients who underwent the procedure without sedation in an outpatient setting. Results: The patients underwent a median of two sessions; overall, a mean of 1591 J of laser energy per session was used. No complications were noted during or after the procedures. Bleeding was completely resolved in 21/24 (88%) patients, and two patients showed improvement (96%). It was not necessary to suspend antiplatelet (six patients) or anticoagulant (four patients) therapy during the treatment course. The mean cost per session was EUR 473.4. Conclusions: The study findings demonstrated that endoscopic non-contact diode laser treatment in CRP patients is safe, effective and cost efficient. For this procedure, antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy suspension, intraprocedural sedation and hospital admission are not required.

Mast cell tumours (MCTs) are common neoplasms in dogs and are usually regarded as potentially malignant. Several studies have attempted to identify biomarkers to better predict biological behaviours for this tumour. The aim of this study was to identify pathways connected to clinical and histopathological malignancies, shorter survival times, and poor prognoses associated with MCTs. We performed genome-wide gene expression analyses on tissues obtained from 15 dogs with single MCTs, and identified two distinct tumour subtypes-high-risk and low-risk-associated with differences in histological grades, survival times, Ki67 indices, and occurrence of death due the disease. Comparative analyses of RNA sequence profiles revealed 71 genes that were differentially expressed between high- and low-risk MCTs. In addition to these analyses, we also examined gene co-expression networks to explore the biological functions of the identified genes. The network construction revealed 63 gene modules, of which 4 were significantly associated with the more aggressive tumour group. Two of the gene modules positively correlated with high-risk MCTs were also associated with cell proliferation and extracellular matrix-related terms. At the top of the extracellular matrix module category, genes with functions directly related to those of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) were identified. Immunohistochemical analyses also revealed a greater number of CAFs in high-risk MCTs. This study provides a method for the molecular characterisation of canine MCTs into two distinct subtypes. Our data indicate that proliferation pathways are significantly involved in malignant tumour behaviours, which are known to be relevant for the induction and maintenance of MCTs. Finally, animals presenting high-risk MCTs overexpress genes associated with the extracellular matrix that can be robustly linked to CAF functions. We suggest that CAFs in the MCT stroma contribute to cancer progression.

This study investigated the relationship between the age of self-reported sexual abuse occurrence and the development of post-traumatic stress disorder and/or depressive symptoms in adulthood. Subjects were evaluated for the presence of post-traumatic stress disorder and/or depressive symptoms as well as for a self-reported history of sexual abuse before the age of 18. Results found that relative risk of having severe post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms was 10 times higher in patients reporting sexual abuse after age 12 than in those reporting sexual abuse before age 12. Relative risk of having severe depressive symptoms was higher for those abused before the age of 12 than for those abused after the age of 12. Findings suggest that the impact of reported sexual abuse at different stages of development may lead to distinct psychiatric symptoms in adulthood. (Contains 3 tables.)

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar o desempenho fonológico e do vocabulário de crianças com perda auditiva unilateral. Métodos Participaram do estudo 12 crianças com perda auditiva unilateral, seis delas com perda condutiva por malformação congênita de orelha e seis com perda sensorioneural congênita ou adquirida no primeiro ano de vida, de qualquer grau, configuração, em qualquer ouvido e sem outro comprometimento associado, na faixa etária entre 3 anos e 7 meses e 7 anos e 8 meses. Foram aplicadas as provas de fonologia e vocabulário do “Teste de Linguagem Infantil – ABFW”. Resultados Trinta e três por cento das crianças apresentaram desempenho diferente do esperado para a faixa etária, no que concerne ao desenvolvimento fonológico (2 crianças) e lexical (2 crianças). Na prova de fonologia, 1 criança com perda sensorioneural apresentou processos produtivos não esperados para a faixa etária (simplificações das líquidas e ensurdecimento de fricativas) e baixos índices de acertos no inventário fonético. Uma criança com perda auditiva condutiva por malformação congênita de orelha apresentou plosivação de fricativas, simplificação de líquidas e resultado limítrofe, na análise do inventário fonético (75%). Na prova de vocabulário, 2 crianças com perda sensorioneural apresentaram médias percentuais de Designação Verbal Usual abaixo das esperadas para as idades, nos diversos campos conceituais. Não houve diferença entre os grupos sensorioneural e condutivo nas provas de fonologia e de vocabulário. Conclusão Crianças com perda auditiva unilateral apresentam risco para o desenvolvimento de linguagem. Destaca-se a importância do acompanhamento de linguagem e audição neste grupo, uma vez que o monitoramento pode propiciar intervenções oportunas e eficazes, prevenindo possíveis alterações da linguagem e dificuldades escolares.

As experiências traumáticas precoces são um fator de risco preditivo de problemas psicopatológicos futuros. O Early Trauma Inventory (ETI) é um instrumento que avalia em indivíduos adultos experiências traumáticas ocorridas antes dos 18 anos de idade. Tal instrumento foi traduzido, transculturalmente adaptado e sua consistência interna foi avaliada. Vítimas de violência que preencheram os critérios de inclusão e exclusão foram submetidas a uma entrevista diagnóstica (SCID-I) e ao ETI. Foram incluídos 91 pacientes com o transtorno do estresse pós-traumático (TEPT). O alfa de Cronbach nos diferentes domínios variou de 0,595-0,793, e o escore total foi de 0,878. A maior parte dos itens nos vários domínios, com exceção do abuso emocional, apresentou índices de correlação interitem entre 0,51-0,99. A versão adaptada foi útil tanto na clínica quanto na pesquisa. Apresentou boa consistência interna e na correlação interitem. O ETI é um instrumento válido, com boa consistência para se avaliar a presença de história de traumas precoces em indivíduos adultos.Early life stress is a strong predictor of future psychopathology during adulthood. The Early Trauma Inventory (ETI) was developed to detect the presence and impact of traumatic experiences that occurred up to 18 years of age. The ETI was translated and cross-culturally adapted and had its consistency evaluated. Victims of violence that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were submitted to SCID-I and ETI. Ninety-one patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were included. Cronbach's alpha in the different domains varied from 0.595 to 0.793, and the total score was 0.878. Except for emotional abuse, most of the various domains displayed inter-item correlation rates of 0.51 to 0.99. The adapted version was useful for clinical and research purposes and showed good internal consistency and inter-item correlation. The ETI is a valid instrument with good consistency for evaluating history of childhood and adolescent trauma in adults.

OBJECTIVE: Post traumatic stress disorder is frequent in the general population (7.8%-lifetime-USA). The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are the first choice of treatment but result in low remission rates. This study aims to evaluate the effect of aripiprazole monotherapy for the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder. METHOD: Thirty-two patients diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder were included in a 16-week open label trial of aripiprazole. They were evaluated at baseline, week 8, and 16 with the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Medical Outcome Study Short Form 36, and Social Adjustment Scale. Statistical analysis were performed with an intention-to-treat approach and last observation carried forward. A general linear model for repeated measures comparing the factor with 3 continuous measures from baseline, 8 and 16 weeks was used. A between-subject factor was included RESULTS: Nine patients discontinued the treatment. The mean aripiprazole dose was 9.6 (± 4.3) mg/day. The mean scores at baseline and endpoint for all measures were: Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale - 82.7 (± 23.1) and 51.4 (± 31.4) (F = 11.247, p = 0.001); Beck Anxiety Inventory - 31.7 (± 13.4) and 25.4 (± 18.2) (F = 8.931, p = 0.011); Social Adjustment Scale - 2.4 (± 0.45) and 2.27 (± 0.57) (F = 8.633, p = 0.012); Medical Outcome Study Short Form 36 - 76.6 (± 14.11) and 94.01 (± 25.06) (F = 10.127 p = 0.007); and Beck Depression Inventory - 26.06 (± 11.6) and 21.35 (± 12.6) (F = 1.580, p = 0.042). In all measurements, the differences were statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Patients achieved a good response to treatment with aripiprazole, but placebo-controlled studies are needed for more accurate results.OBJETIVO: O transtorno de estresse pós-traumático é um quadro prevalente (7,8%-lifetime-EUA) que provoca grande prejuízo aos pacientes. Os inibidores seletivos de recaptação de serotonina, medicação de primeira escolha para o tratamento, mostram baixos índices de remissão. Este estudo pretende apresentar uma diferente escolha de medicamento para tratar o transtorno de estresse pós-traumático. MÉTODO: Trinta e dois pacientes com transtorno de estresse pós-traumático receberam aripiprazol por 16 semanas. Foram submetidos na entrada, 8 e 16 semanas às escalas Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Medical Outcome Study Short Form 36 e Social Adjustment Scale. Foi usado o modelo linear generalizado para medidas repetidas comparando o fator com as três medidas contínuas nos três pontos de avaliação. Foi feita uma comparação entre sujeitos (grupo tratamento) usando modelo linear generalizado univariado. Usamos a intenção de tratamento e a estratégia da última observação com endpoint (Last Observation Carried Forward). RESULTADOS: Nove pacientes descontinuaram antes da segunda avaliação. A dose média foi 9,6 (± 4,3) mg/dia. As medidas na entrada e no final do tratamento foram: Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale - 82,7 (± 23,1) e 51,4 (± 31,4) (F = 11,247, p = 0,001); Beck Anxiety Inventory - 31,7 (± 13,4) e 25,4 (± 18,2) (F = 8,931, p = 0,011); Social Adjustment Scale - 2,4 (± 0,45) e 2,27 (± 0,57) (F = 8,633, p = 0,012); Medical Outcome Study Short Form 36 - 76,6 (± 14,11) e 94,01 (± 25,06) (F = 10,127 p = 0,007); e Beck Depression Inventory - 26,06 (± 11,6) e 21,35 (± 12,6) (F = 1,580, p = 0,042). Analisa-se o primeiro ano de implantação do novo Projeto Pedagógico do curso de Fonoaudiologia da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP). O objetivo foi analisar não só as mudanças de concepção e práticas pedagógicas, mas a construção de um trabalho coletivo do corpo social do curso. Os resultados apontaram que as novas modalidades pedagógicas (seminários, tutoria, oficinas, vivências formadoras) foram dispositivos importantes para se alcançar as mudanças propostas no novo modelo curricular. Entre outros avanços, destacaram-se: maior integração das disciplinas básicas com as atividades de caráter profissionalizante; melhor compreensão do estudante sobre a importância de uma formação pautada nas necessidades da população; maior articulação entre atividades de ensino, pesquisa e extensão; interação entre estudantes dos vários níveis de formação nas ações de promoção da saúde e prevenção de agravos; planejamento de atividades pedagógicas complementares em função das necessidades dos estudantes detectadas nas avaliações formativas.

Summary: We hereby report on the audiological and genetic findings in individuals from a Brazilian family, with the following mitochondrial mutation A1555G in the 12SrRNA gene (MT-RNR-1). Nine individuals underwent speech, audiologic (tonal audiometry and logoaudiometry) and genetic evaluations. Eight individuals among the A1555G carriers were affected by hearing impairment and one person had normal hearing thresholds till the end of the present study. The audiologic evaluation results indicated normal hearing thresholds all the way to bilateral profound hearing loss with post-lingual onset and variable configuration. Two affected siblings presented progressive hearing loss. It was impossible to precise the time of hearing loss onset; however, the impairment was present in both children and adults. OBJETIVO: conhecer os fatores de risco para deficiência auditiva e obter informações sobre o tempo transcorrido entre suspeita, diagnóstico e intervenção em crianças e jovens deficientes auditivos atendidos no Serviço de Audiologia Educacional, DERDIC-PUC-SP. MÉTODOS: estudo retrospectivo de 162 prontuários de deficientes auditivos com idade entre um e 17 anos e 6 meses, atendidos de 1999 a 2002. Para registro dos dados utilizou-se a adaptação do protocolo elaborado no Fórum de Reabilitação Aural do Encontro Internacional de Audiologia, no Brasil. RESULTADOS: 54% dos sujeitos eram do sexo masculino e 46% do feminino; 60% tinham idade entre três e oito anos e 11 meses; 43% tiveram a suspeita da deficiência auditiva no primeiro ano de vida. Em 25% dos casos, o diagnóstico ocorreu logo após a suspeita, em 34% ocorreu um intervalo de até um ano; 11% iniciaram atendimento fonoaudiológico após diagnóstico, 54% demoraram até um ano e 27% demoraram mais de um ano. Trinta e dois por cento apresentaram etiologia desconhecida, 18% genética, 17% presumida multifatorial, 15% meningite, 9% rubéola congênita. CONCLUSÃO: a prevalência da etiologia desconhecida aponta para a necessidade do aprofundamento no diagnóstico etiopatológico (estudos genéticos, de imagens e laboratoriais) como rotina para se obter as causas da deficiência auditiva. Observou-se que mesmo após as campanhas de vacinação, a rubéola ainda foi a maior causa de deficiência auditiva congênita e a meningite a maior causa das deficiências auditivas adquiridas após o nascimento. Constatou-se um longo intervalo de tempo entre suspeita, confirmação e início da intervenção fonoaudiológica.PURPOSE: to become aware of the risks factors for hearing impairment and describe the time gap between the suspicions of the hearing loss, the diagnostic and the beginning of the rehabilitation for a group of hearing impaired children and teenagers from an institution in São Paulo, Brazil - DERDIC PUC-SP, that took part in a rehabilitation program from 1999 to 2002. METHODS: a retrospective study of 162 files of hearing impaired children between 12mo and 17:6 yrs old, the questionnaire elaborated by The Aural Rehabilitation Forum which occurs annually during the International Audiology Meeting in Brazil was used. RESULTS: the results showed 54% male and 46% female subjects; 60% between 3 and 8:11 years old; 43% had the suspicions of the hearing loss in the first year of life; for 25% of the subjects the diagnostic was carried out just after the suspicions; 34% finished the diagnostic one year after the suspicions; 11% began rehabilitation just after the diagnostic, 54% after a year and 27% more than a year. 32% had unknown etiology, 18% genetic causes, 17% presumed multiple factors, 15% meningitis, 9% congenital rubella. CONCLUSION: the prevalence of unknown etiology shows the need for deepening the diagnosis, and as a routine, carry out genetics, images and laboratories studies, in order to know the etiologies of the hearing loss. Even though after implementing immunization campaigns, rubella was the most prevalent cause of the congenital hearing loss and meningitis was the most prevalent cause of acquired hearing loss. A precious time for the child development was lost because of the time gap between suspicions, diagnostic and rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we present data from a survey that aimed to assess the physical activity habits of adult Brazilian patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. METHOD: Fifty male and female patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder participated in this study. The mean age at onset was 37±12 years, and the mean time between diagnosis and follow-up was 3.6±4.2 years. RESULTS: Substantial changes in physical activity habits were observed following the onset of PTSD. While more than half of the patients participated in physical activities prior to Posttraumatic Stress Disorder onset, there was a significant reduction in their participation afterwards. The justifications for stopping physical activities or sport participation were lack of time and lack of motivation. DISCUSSION: Several studies have shown that physical exercise decreases reverts symptoms of psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety and social isolation. We could therefore hypothesize that patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder who exercise should experience the same benefits. CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrated that patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder have low levels of participation in sports or physical activities.

This article draws on the experience matured while working with low-enthalpy geothermic installations both in the design and executive phase as well as ongoing monitoring, within the scope of energy conservation as it relates to building and construction. The goal is to illustrate the feasibility of adopting the ESBE certification protocol (Certification of Energy Efficient Low-Enthalpy Probes) aimed at optimizing the harnessing of local geothermic resources to satisfy the energy requirements of a building, measured against the initial investment. It is often the case, in fact, that during the course of a construction project for a given low-enthalpy installation, we verify incompa tibilities with the local geologic and geothermic models, which, if inadequate during construction, can compromise the proper functioning of the installation and its subsequent operation. To this end, the ESBE method, which adheres to the governing environmental regulations, and which takes its cue from technical statutes within the sector, permits us to validate via verification, simulations and tests, the geothermic field probes used in construction in an objective and standardized manner, thereby joining and supporting the most recent protocols for energy certification of buildings (LEED 2010, CASACLIMA 2011, UE 20120/31 Directive). ESBE certification operates through a dedicated Certifying Entity represented by the REET unit (Renewable Energies and Environmental Technologies) of FBK (Bruno Kessler Foundation) of Trento. The results obtained by applying the ESBE method to two concrete cases, relative to two complex geothermic systems, demonstrate how this protocol is able to guarantee, beyond the correct execution in the field of geothermic probes, an effective coverage of the energy requirements of the building during construction adopting the best optimization measures for the probes in keeping with the local geological and geothermic model.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi comparar a eficácia da técnica de vibrocompressão e tapotagem associadas à drenagem postural e à técnica de aspiração traqueal em lactente hospitalizados por bronquiolite. Foram pesquisadas crianças abaixo de 2 anos de idade admitidas no hospital, na unidade de emergência, com diagnóstico de bronquiolite viral em respiração espontânea; 19 lactentes com diagnóstico clínico e radiológico de bronquiolite. Para tanto, foram realizadas intervenções da seguinte ordem: três grupos foram randomizados: vibrocompressão + drenagem postural (VC+DP); tapotagem + drenagem postural (TAP+DP); e aspiração traqueal (ASP). Saturação de pulso de oxigênio (SpO2), freqüência cardíaca (FC), freqüência respiratória (f), boletim de Silverman – Anderson (BSA), que avalia o desconforto respiratório, foram avaliadas em três momentos: pré-tratamento (pré), pós-imediato (pós i) e 15 minutos após finalização do tratamento (pós 15); a quantidade de secreção aspirada foi avaliada apenas no pós i. Os resultados mostraram que houve redução significante no BSA e maior quantidade de secreção removida nos grupo VC+ DP e TAP + DP no pós 15 (p< 0.05). Houve redução da FC no pós 15 nos três grupos. Concluiu-se que VC e TAP, associadas à drenagem postural, mostraram-se eficientes na remoção de secreção e redução do desconforto respiratório em lactentes com bronquiolite.

The first year of implementation of the new pedagogical project for the Speech Therapy course at the Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) is analyzed. The aim was not only to analyze the changes in pedagogical concepts and practices, but also to construct collective work by the social body of the course. The results indicated that the new pedagogical activities (seminars, tutorials, workshops and instructive experiences) were important tools for achieving the proposed changes in the new curricular model. Highlighted among other advances were: greater integration between basic disciplines and professionalizing activities; better comprehension by students of the importance of training based on the population's needs; greater linkage between teaching, research and extension activities; interaction among students at various levels of training, regarding health promotion and disease prevention actions; planning of supplementary pedagogical activities according to students' needs detected in educational assessments.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a frequent malignant neoplasm of the skin that usually arises from areas of solar dermatosis. It is characterized by local invasiveness and regional lymph node metastasis, mainly in poorly differentiated tumours. Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a lectin that is expressed in the nucleus or cytoplasm and has been identified as a prognostic tool for human neoplasms. The purpose of this study was to characterize Gal-3 expression in canine cutaneous SCCs and to investigate its relationship with tumour differentiation and cell proliferation indices. Immunohistochemical analysis of 50 SCCs for Gal-3 revealed no correlation between the localization or intensity of immunolabelling, or number of immunopositive cells, with histological grade of tumour or proliferative activity. The results suggest that Gal-3 expression is not a reliable prognostic marker for cutaneous SCC in dogs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RESUMO Objetivo: utilizar a Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde- Crianças e Jovens (CIF-CJ) em serviços do Sistema Único de Saúde para o registro do desenvolvimento da audição e da linguagem de crianças no primeiro ano de vida. Métodos: os ACS da Unidade Básica de Saúde da cidade de Sorocaba, São Paulo, Brasil, foram capacitados para a aplicação de um questionário para monitoramento da audição e da linguagem em crianças no primeiro ano de vida atendidas pela Estratégia de Saúde da Família (ESF). Fonoaudiólogos especialistas em audiologia realizaram a correlação de cada uma das perguntas do questionário com os códigos da CIF-CJ. Resultados: 13 ACS participaram da capacitação e obtiveram porcentagem de acertos na avaliação pós-capacitação maior em relação à pré-capacitação. 22 crianças foram acompanhadas, 17 crianças evoluíram de acordo com o esperado, 2 obtiveram melhora nos resultados, 2 necessitaram de continuidade no acompanhamento e para 1 a suspeita de alteração no desenvolvimento foi mantida. Conclusões: a utilização da CIF-CJ permitiu a ampliação do olhar dos profissionais da saúde e pode ser utilizado no acompanhamento do desenvolvimento infantil. A criação/adaptação de instrumentos de avaliação padronizados com base na CIF favorece sua utilização na prática clínica. A capacitação dos ACS se mostrou efetiva e propiciou o envolvimento deles com as questões relevantes para o desenvolvimento infantil.

PURPOSE: This review aimed at presenting the benefits regarding the speech perception in noise shown by children who wear hearing aid devices and/or cochlear implants with the Frequency Modulation (FM) System at school. RESEARCH STRATEGY: A bibliographic survey was conducted in an electronic database with standardized search until the year 2012, and a manual search was performed by using specific keywords. SELECTION CRITERIA: For the selection and evaluation of the scientific studies chosen in the search, criteria were established covering the following aspects: type of study, participants, adopted intervention, and evaluation of results. DATA ANALYSIS: The FM system was verified to improve speech perception and speech threshold in noise in all studies. RESULTS: Regarding the performance as to type, the best results were obtained when children used the personal FM system, followed by the table and the sound field systems. CONCLUSION: After extensive review of national and international literature, it was concluded that the studies indicate the need for further research concerning mainly the impact of the FM system on the school performance of children who have sensory devices coupled to the FM system. Findings in the literature with relation to the publications focused on speech perception in noise did not relate educational and auditory aspects.

Abstract: We reported two cases of hepatitis B virus infection-related cirrhosis developed during childhood and followed up for more than 20 years. Both the subjects remained untreated, and ultimately regression of cirrhosis was documented by clinical (including ultrasound) and histological examination. Recent studies have already suggested that hepatitis B virus-related cirrhosis may regress after treatment, but this is the first demonstration that hepatitis B virus-associated cirrhosis developed in childhood may be a spontaneously reversible process. Subsidence of virus replication and of necro-inflammatory process and the efficiency of liver regeneration and repair might contribute to this favourable outcome. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
