Abstract

Over the past few years, supply chains have become globalised and multi-tiered. These factors complicate their structure as the focal company is responsible for the problems experienced at each stage in the multi-tier supply chain. The critical issue for focal companies in managing their multi-tier supply chain is to adopt sustainability standards. One of the study's contributions is the role of weight determination in the tiers and evaluation of alternative suppliers in facilitating the effective management of multi-tier supply chains, especially in complex industries such as the food industry. The other contribution of this study is its proposition for a multi-stage framework based on sustainability concerns. The study identifies 14 criteria for companies in diffusing sustainability standards throughout multi-tier supply chains. The weights of these criteria are determined for each tier of the food supply chain using the Best Worst Method. Results show that the 'environmental' criteria are most important for supply chain tiers in the food industry. Supply chain visibility/traceability is the most important criteria for the first tier, followed by environmental responsibilities, for the second and environmental competencies for the third. Finally, for the food company, PROMETHEE is used to evaluate three alternative suppliers for each tier. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

7. A New Perspective for Construction Supply Chains in Digital Era

Abstract

The construction industry is a highly labor-intensive industry with a low degree of automation and digitization. However, as in the manufacturing industry, a 'new order' is emerging for the way the construction industry works today. This study aims to present the transformation of construction supply chains (CSCs) in Industry 4.0 by considering each supply chain stage separately, where the main purpose is to determine the criteria for the integration of the CSC with the Industry 4.0 perspective. A literature review and a Delphi study were conducted, and thirteen criteria are proposed to show the integration of Industry 4.0 aspects and CSC stages. Furthermore, one of the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods, the Best-Worst method, is used to prioritize the criteria for guiding future implications during the transformation of construction supply chains. Among the six CSC stages, the design stage is the most important from the Industry 4.0 perspective. In addition, client collaboration by ICT (BIM) during the design phase is the most important sub-factors’ overall rank. Although there is a limited number of studies on the CSC, there are no empirical studies addressing the current digital age approach. As a result, there is a significant gap in the construction literature, and a thorough assessment of the building supply chain in an Industry 4.0 setting is lacking. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to illustrate the transformation of CSCs in Construction 4.0 by looking at each supply chain stage separately.

17. Construction and Demolition Waste Management in Urban Transformation: A Case Study for Performance Evaluation

Abstract

Due to the decreasing resources in the world, different recycling applications in different sectors are gaining more importance. Urban transformations initiated especially for earthquake remnants and old buildings provide many advantages for the construction sector. Recycling of valuable materials from the wastes from each demolished construction site is very important in terms of costs. It is also important to analyse the effectiveness of both public and private companies to compare different approaches and illustrate best practices. From this point of view, this research has been carried out on the recycling of construction and demolition wastes in Turkey and the performance of companies dealing with this business. Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and gray relations analysis (GRA) will be applied for the evaluation phase. The criteria will be analysed through AHP and the connection between companies will be determined with the GRA method. According to the results, potential improvement opportunities will be identified to increase the performance and competitiveness of construction excavation companies. This will also allow the findings to serve as a potential model for other construction companies operating under different contingency factors, as well as presenting the list of criteria that construction companies should pay attention for performance evaluation.

Abstract

Stakeholders of listed companies are interested in the financial sustainability and corporate governance (CG) issues in the companies. This study aims to explore the relationship between corporate governance practices and financial sustainability in light of OECD principles of corporate governance. Altman’s Z-scores and CG ratings of 20 companies listed in the Borsa Istanbul Corporate Governance Index (XKURY) were analyzed using the TOPSIS method. The results obtained in this study show that firms’ financial sustainability and corporate governance scores don’t move in the same direction for the years from 2013 to 2018.

Abstract

Consumption of frozen food has increased significantly in many countries experiencing total closure due to epidemics. In order to meet this increase in demand, companies apply different strategies in both production and logistics processes. In particular, warehouse locations need to be closer to consumers so as not to disrupt the increasing demand and the cold chain. Considering the sustainable position in the frozen food industry, it is essential to focus on both commercial and economic impacts. However, especially the environmental and sustainable criteria have always been neglected in terms of planning the country and the city. Therefore, this study has three main research questions; (1) identify key criteria for sustainability-focused frozen food facility location, (2) understand the relationship between these criteria, and (3) develop a hierarchical sustainable location roadmap for practitioners. Initially, a literature review was conducted to find the answers to these questions and reveal suitable criteria. Secondly, PROMETHEE was used to determine the relative importance of the data-driven performance of the main and sub-criteria. Therefore, this study gives the reader a comprehensive insight into how sustainable data-driven performance criteria are applied in frozen food storage facility locations. Abstract

The increased e-commerce volume, especially with the pandemic, has shown us that the supply chain should never be broken. Transportation, which is the most crucial element that connects the rings along the chain, has become more critical. In the face of this situation, almost the whole world has faced the problem of truck driver shortage that has never been mentioned before. The accident caused by the truck drivers, which we already have problems with in terms of numbers, causes enormous losses in the chain such as high cost, time, and stock out. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study is to identify the various barriers that are critical to the success of truck drivers in providing safe transportation and to determine the weights and relative importance of these barriers. To find answers to these questions, firstly, a detailed literature review is conducted to identify the barriers and challenges. Later, to find the effects of these barriers within themselves, the Best-worst method (BWM) is used, which is one of the decision-making models. With this method, the importance order of barriers is determined from a holistic perspective. Based on the results use of mobile phones is the most critical barrier among the sub-barriers. If it is necessary to sort among all barriers; the age of the driver, experience of the driver and eating & drinking in the car follow looking at external objects, respectively. Surprisingly, the aggressive driver behaviors barrier came in at the bottom of the overall barrier ranking. Based on these results, this study gives the reader a comprehensive insight into how detected barriers affect truck driver performance. 48. Solving Scheduling Deteriorating Jobs with Rate Modifying Activity

Abstract

Traditional scheduling problems assume that the processing time of a given job is always fixed. However, the processing times may change in real industrial applicants. To reflect the real world, we use two new phenomenons in this study. The first one is known as the deterioration job where the job processing times are defined by functions of their starting times and positions in the sequence. And, the other one is rate-modifying-activity is an activity which affects and changes the production rate of the machines. This study aims to determine the work sequence, the number of breaks and their positions within the work sequence while considering the deterioration jobs and rate-modifying-activities. In this dissertation, three different mathematical models are introduced to solve the scheduling problems. The first model addresses a classical single machine problem with makespan and total flow time objectives to consider deteriorating jobs and rate-modifying-activity. The second model introduces a single worker scheduling problem which considers workers’ physiological factors while determining the break time. The third model introduces a bi-criteria scheduling model with deteriorating jobs and rate-modifying-activities on a single machine. Also, several different heuristic algorithms are developed for large-sized problems. For each mathematical model and heuristic, independent experiments are performed to analyze the effectiveness of these algorithms.
