Background: The aim of this study was to investigate hepatic lesions induced by the 2.45 GHz electromagnetic radiation (EMR) of Wi-Fi and the protective effects of Vitamin C (Vit C) in rats. Materials and Methods: Eighteen Sprague-Dawley female rats were randomly distributed into three groups, each containing six rats. The groups were Control, EMR (EMR, 1 h/day for 30 days) and EMR + Vit C (EMR, 1 h/day for 30 days and Vit C, 250 mg/kg/daily). At the end of the study, blood and liver tissue samples were collected for laboratory examinations. Results: Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were increased in the EMR group compared with the control group. Liver histology of rats in the EMR group revealed severe hyperemia, slight degeneration, and lipidosis. Caspase-3, hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1), and HIF-2 immunoexpression was increased, and Sirtuin-1 (SIRT-1) expression was markedly decreased in hepatocytes in the EMR group. Vit C treatment ameliorated both biochemical and pathological findings. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that 2.45 GHz (Wi-Fi) EMR can cause liver damage in rats, but Vit C has an ameliorative effect.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of taxifolin, a powerful antioxidant, on the progression of periodontitis by immunohistochemical and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) examination. Design: This study was performed with 32 rats in four experimental groups: a non-ligated group (Control, n = 8), periodontitis group (Perio, n = 8), periodontitis with 1 mg/kg/day taxifolin group (Taxi-1, n = 8), and periodontitis with 10 mg/kg/day taxifolin group (Taxi-10, n = 8). A ligature-induced experimental periodontitis design was used. All rats were sacrificed at 30 days. Alveolar bone loss was determined by CBCT. Hematoxylin-eosin stained slides were examined. The expression levels of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2), osteocalcin (OCN), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), collagen type I (Col 1), Bcl-2, Bax, and receptor activator of NF-kappa B ligand (RANKL) were determined immunohistochemically. Results: Both doses of taxifolin showed a decrease in alveolar bone loss. The inflammatory reaction was higher in the Perio group and lower in the taxifolin groups. BMP-2, OCN, ALP, and Col 1 expression were dose-dependently elevated in the taxifolin groups. RANKL immunoexpression decreased with both doses of taxifolin. Bcl-2 expression increased and Bax expression decreased in the taxifolin groups. Conclusion: Taxifolin successfully reduced apoptosis and improved bone formation in alveolar bone in this experimental periodontitis model. Tideglusib is a glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK-3) inhibitor which has shown the effects of bone regeneration, used for the treatment of Alzheimer disease. The aim of the study was to determine the effects of Tideglusib in the apoptosis and the bone regeneration in rats with calvarial defects. Twenty male Wistar rats (aged 11-13 weeks) were used for the study. Full-thickness flap elevated to exposure calvarial bone. Two 5 mm critical size calvarial defects were created on each rat calvarium. The defects were divided into 4 study groups: 1-Control (n = 10); 2- Gelatin sponge+Tideglusib (Gs+TDG; n = 10); 3- Autogenous bone (AB; n = 10); 4-Autogenous bone+Tideglusib (AB+TDG; n = 10). Then, the rats were sacrificed at fourth week. Three-dimensional imaging, histopathologic and immunohistochemical examinations were performed to evaluate the samples. The most increased bone formation and interaction between graft and new bone were observed in AB+TDG group. Bone morphogenic protein-2 (BMP-2), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), collagen type 1 (Col 1) and osteocalcin (OCN) was determined significantly higher in Tideglusib received groups compared with those of Control and AB groups (P < 0.05). Osteoclast numbers found to be higher in Gs+TDG and AB+TDG groups as well as RANKL expression dis not affected in Gs+TDG group but decreased in AB+TDG group comparing those of Control and AB groups. In addition, Tideglusib increased the Bcl-2 levels (P < 0.05) and decreased Bax levels (P > 0.05) in Tideglusib received groups compared with their controls. The administration of Tideglusib in calvarial bone defects increased bone mineral density, new bone area and total bone area by decreasing apoptosis and increasing osteoblastogenesis. We investigated the pathogenesis of skin lesions due to hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism in rats. We used 30 rats allocated into hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and control groups. Blood samples were evaluated for levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), tri-iodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). Skin samples were examined for melan-A, lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronic acid receptor 1 (LYVE1), cluster of differentiation 31 (CD31), protein gene product 9.5 (PGP9.5), calretinin, chromogranin, synaptophysin and pancytokeratin. Histopathological examination of the skin sections revealed thickened epidermis in the hyperthyroidism group due to an increased number of cells, and a decreased number of hair follicles and epithelial cell rows in the epidermis with an increased number of fat cells in the dermis of the rats in the hypothyroidism group. No significant difference was observed in the immunoreactions of pancytokeratin, PGP9.5, CD31 and synaptophysin among the groups. The hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism groups exhibited a marked increase in melan-A immunoreaction. Expression of LYVE-1, chromogranin and calretinin was increased in the hyperthyroidism group and decreased in the hypothyroidism group. We found that melan-A, LYVE-1, chromogenin and calretinin play an important role in the pathogenesis of skin lesions caused by thyroid disorders. Background: Diabetes mellitus become an epidemic problem throughout the world. Relation of the diabetes with diet is known. Some evidence is reported about mother died and risk of diabetes in babies during the life related with gestational diabetes. This study was conducted to examine the effects of the exposure of high-dose sucrose to rats and pups during pregnancy and lactation. Methods: The mother rats were categorized into four groups, during pregnancy and until the offspring were 1-month-old, as follows: Group 1, provided with normal drinking water; Group 2, provided with water containing 10%; Group 3, 20%; and Group 4, 30% table sugar. During the study, the weights and daily fluid consumption of the animals were recorded. At the end of the study, the changes in blood, urine, and pancreatic tissues of the rats were examined. Results: The pups in the groups supplemented with sugar had more weight gain than those of the control group. Although serum glucose levels of mothers and young rats in the groups fed with sugar-containing water did not reach the diabetic limits, it was observed that these animals had statistically significantly higher blood glucose levels than those in the control group. Insulin levels were also similarly increased by an increase in the amount of sugar. Immunohistochemical studies on the mother rats showed that insulin secreted cell numbers and insulin receptors significantly decreased in some pancreatic islets in the groups supplemented with sugar. Glucagon immunoreactivity examination showed that the number of glucagon-expressing cells decreased in the rat groups supplemented with sugar. Similar and more severe findings were observed in the offspring. Conclusion: This study has experimentally demonstrated that high daily intake of sugar in healthy pregnancies causes adverse effects on the mother and offspring. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the contributions of autogenous tooth bone graft (ATBG) combined with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) on new bone formation and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2 in rabbit calvarial defects. Twelve male New Zealand rabbits were used in this study. Three circular bone defects were prepared in each rabbit with a drill. These defects were divided into 3 groups: control, treated with ATBG, and treated with ATBG+PRF. The animals were sacrificed at 28 days. Samples were evaluated by histomorphometric analyses and total augmented area, new bone area and bone density were calculated. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine pancreatic pathology and the prophylactic effects of pregabalin in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced sepsis model in aged rats. Methods: Twenty-four female, one-year-old, Wistar Albino rats were assigned to three groups; Group I (control), Group II (study group: 5mg/kg LPS intraperitoneal, single dose) and Group III(treatment group: 5mg/kg LPS+30 mg/kg oral pregabalin one hour before LPS). Animals were sacrificed by exsanguination 6 hours after LPS administration. Blood and pancreatic tissue samples were collected for biochemical, pathological, and immunohistochemical analyses. Results: LPS caused increases in serum amylase and lipase level but led to a reduction in glucose levels. Following histopathological analysis, numerous neutrophil leucocyte infiltrations were observed in vessels and pancreatic tissues. Increased caspase-3 expression was observed in both the endocrine and exocrine pancreas in the LPS group. Similarly, IL-6, caspase-3 (Cas-3), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and serum amyloid-A (SAA) expressions were increased by LPS. Pregabalin improved biochemical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical findings. Conclusion: This study showed that LPS causes pathological findings in the pancreas, but pregabalin has ameliorative effects in aged rats with sepsis. OBJECTIVE: The effects of Certolizumab, a pegylated monoclonal antibody to tumor necrosis factor alpha, on experimentally induced acute pancreatitis (AP) were examined.

This is a report of the first record of the occurrence of Lernaea cyprinacea on tadpoles of Pelophylax bedriagae, a frog species native from Karpuzcay Creek, Antalya, Turkey. A total of 20 tadpoles of P. bedriagae were examined and 14 (70%) specimens were infected. A maximum of two parasites per host was found, primarily around the cloaca. In general, slight to moderate hyperemia was noticed around the parasite. Typically, granuloma form in the tissues around the parasite. Histopathological examination revealed that hemorrhages and pathological lesions such as dermal erosions, and a chronic inflammatory reaction in skin and muscle were present at the site of parasite attachment. Lernaea cyprinacea L. is a lernaeid copepod known to be a pathogenic parasite in freshwater systems, found on a variety of freshwater fish worldwide. Recently it was recorded from two endemic; Pseudophoxinus burduricus and Oxynoemacheilus anatolicus, and one exotic fish species; Gambusia holbrooki in a Karstik Spring Creek (Düger Spring), Burdur-Turkey. After macro- and microscopic inspection of fish, a high prevalence of L. cyprinacea was recorded on P. burduricus (28.3%) and a low prevalence on O. anatolicus (6%). Histopathological examination of lesions revealed inflammatory response in the epidermis, dermis, and muscles. This is the first record of L. cyprinacea on P. burduricus and O. anatolicus from Turkey. Its prevalence, mean intensity and seasonality with respect to the observed environmental parameters are also presented. © 2017, FRS Marine Laboratory. All rights reserved.
