Introduction: Osteoarthritic subchondral cysts within or around the hip joint can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from primary osseous and soft tissue tumors due to their radiological appearance and uncommon location.Case Presentation: We report the case of a 74-year-old Turkish man with a subchondral cyst arising from the hip joint, eroding the acetabulum and located on the medial side of the iliac bone, which imitated a soft tissue tumor. This cystic lesion was resected and the results of histopathological analysis of tissue samples were found to be consistent with an osteoarthritic cyst.Conclusions: The present case illustrates how an osteoarthritic subchondral cyst can grow into the soft tissue planes in the presence of destruction of the articular cartilage and subchondral bone continuity, and present as an apparent soft tissue tumor. Objective: We aimed to determine the effects of melatonin treatment on endometrial implants in an oopherectomized rat endometriosis model., Material and Methods: This study is a prospective, randomised, controlled experimental study. It was carried out at the Experimental Research Center of Yeditepe University (YUDETAM). Twenty-two, female, non-pregnant, nulligravid Spraque-Dawley albino rats were included in our study. Endometriosis was surgically induced in oopherectomized rats. Rats were randomised into two groups: control group and melatonin group. In the melatonin group, rats were treated with melatonin (20 mg/kg/day) for two weeks. After the operations were performed to assess the regression of the endometriotic lesions, melatonin treatment was stopped. At the end of the sixth week necropsies were performed to assess the rate of recurrence. The volume and histopathological scores of endometriotic foci were examined., Results: Volumes of the endometriotic lesions significantly decreased in the melatonin group. Also, when the melatonin group was analysed within itself, endometriotic lesion volumes decreased and histopathological scores increased significantly., Conclusion: Melatonin causes regression of the endometriotic lesions in rats and improvement in their histopathological scores.

Introduction. Schwannomas are quiet rare in the retroperitoneal region. Here, we describe an incidentally detected retroperitoneal schwannoma in the abdominal computerized tomography (CT) of a patient with acute appendicitis. Case Presentation. A 38-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency service with the complaints of progressive abdominal pain and nausea for the last 24 hours. Abdominal examination was compatible with acute abdomen. Acute appendicitis was diagnosed by CT. During CT evaluation, a round shaped soft-tissue mass at the retroperitoneal area inferior to the right kidney was detected, The mass was resected and histology revealed schwannoma. Conclusion. Rare tumoral lesions with benign course such as schwannoma can be detected incidentally.

Unlabelled: A case of a 45 year-old woman who presented with a perianal fistula was reported. Histologically, the excised lesion showed features of apocrine fibroadenoma. In addition, the lesion had both glandular and stromal growth patterns and active chronic inflammation in the background. Malignant or benign counterparts of these types of lesions are widely described in literature. However fistula does not usually accompany and is very rare. Therefore, it is crucial for the pathologists and clinicians to be aware of such lesions. Objective: To determine the effects of the combination of letrozole and melatonin on surgically induced endometriosis., Material and Methods: This prospective, randomized, controlled, experimental study was carried out at Yeditepe University Experimental Research Center (YUDETAM). Female non-pregnant, 17 nulligravid Wistar - Hannover albino rats with surgically induced endometriosis were used in this study. Endometriosis was induced by using homologous uterine horn transplantation in the rats. Four operations were performed on each rat. The induction of endometriosis was performed in the first operation. After two weeks of estradiol treatment the second operation was performed and endometriotic lesions were evaluated. Estrogen was then discontinued and in the study groups medications were started. During two weeks the rats were given medications and the third operation was performed for the assessment of the effects of the medications on the endometriotic foci. Then all the medications were stopped and estrogen was started again. Two weeks later all the rats were euthanized and recurrence of endometriosis was evaluated., Results: The sum of the lesion volumes in the control group was 93.6±31.7 mm(3) at the end of the second week. After the cessation of estradiol it decreased to 85.0±23.8 mm(3) (P=0.31) and increased to 119.7±29.4 mm(3) at the sixth week (P=0.02). A significant reduction in histopathologic scores were seen after cessation of the estradiol (p=0.04). At the end of the sixth week, histopathological scores reached the pretreatment values. In the letrozole and melatonin group the sum of the lesion volumes decreased significantly after the treatment (82.8±21.0 mm(3) and 15.7±8.0 mm(3) respectively). At the end of the sixth week, the mean volume was calculated as 43.9±31.8 mm(3) (p=0.002). Histopathologic scores were 2.3±0.1, 2.0±0.2 and 2.2±0.3 at the end of the second, fourth and sixth weeks, respectively, in the letrozole and melatonin group., Conclusions: Letrozole and melatonin caused a significant regression in lesion volumes; however, histopathological scores of endometriotic lesions did not change significantly.

We examined the expression pattern of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and c-kit in uterine smooth muscle neoplasms and tried to determine the role of these markers in differential diagnosis. Archival tissue from 64 patients with uterine smooth muscle neoplasms (20 leiomyomas (LMs), 22 atypical leiomyomas (ALMs), and 22 leiomyosarcomas (LMSs)) was immunostained with antibodies against estrogen (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR), COX-2 and c-kit. 7 of 20 LM cases and 5 of 22 ALM cases were immunopositive for COX-2, whereas none of the LMS cases stained immunopositive (p< or =0.05). 4 of 20 LM cases and 5 of 22 ALM cases were immunopositive for c-kit, whereas 15 of 22 LMS cases showed c-kit immunopositivity (p< or =0.05). In conclusion, very few LMs and ALMs show COX-2 immunopositivity. LMSs usually do not express COX-2. COX-2 expression in smooth muscle tumors is not a prominent feature. Therefore, COX-2 inhibitors may not be useful in LMS therapy. C-kit was significantly expressed in uterine LMSs.

Spindle cell lipomas are a group of benign lipogenic soft tissue tumors. Typically they occur in posterior back and shoulder of elderly male patients. Differential diagnosis of this tumor became more important because the number of reports about some other tumors of similar morphology such as mammary type myofibroblastoma and solitary fibrous tumor, are increasing. All these tumors compose of bland spindle cells, mature adipocytes and collagen bundles. In this retrospective study we evaluated clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features of 18 cases of spindle cell lipomas. 15 cases of classical spindle cell lipomas and 3 pleomorphic lipoma variant were all histologically characteristic. Immuohistochemically they were all CD34 positive. Ten cases, whose paraffin blocks available, were desmin negative. We think that spindle cell lipomas are desmin negative tumors and this feature helps us to differentiate them especially from mammary type myofibroblastomas of extramammarian soft tissue.
