2. The Macroanatomical Evaluation of N. splanchnicus Major, Minor and Imus in Donkeys (Equus asinus L.)

Abstract

Eight adult donkeys of both sexes, used in applied anatomy classes, constituted the material of the study. The greater splanchnic nerve (N. splanchnicus major) was determined to ramify from the truncus sympathicus from the space between the 13th thoracic sympathetic ganglion and the 17-18th thoracic interganglionic connection on the right side and the space between the 12-13th thoracic interganglionic connection and the 16-17th thoracic interganglionic connection on the left side. The lesser splanchnic nerve (N. splanchnicus minor) was determined to be formed by fibres originating from the 14-15th thoracic interganglionic connection and the 17-18th thoracic interganglionic connection on the right side and the 13-14th thoracic interganglionic connection, the 15-16th thoracic interganglionic connection and the 17th thoracic sympathetic ganglion on the left side. The lesser splanchnic nerve (N. splanchnicus minor) was determined not to exist on the right side in one of the materials examined. The lowest splanchnic nerve (N. splanchnicus imus) was demonstrated to exist on the fight side in 4 (50%) and on the left side in 3 (37.5%) of the 8 materials examined. The thoracic splanchnic nerves were determined to give off branches to the suprarenal gland (glandula suprarenalis), behind the diaphragm and to extend to the celiac ganglion (ganglion celiaca). No marked difference was observed between the right and left sides.

Abstract

Objective: To determine the relationship between 16 phenotypic parameters and the diameter of the tracheal lumen and endotracheal tube size (ETS) in Dalmatian puppies., Study Design: A prospective nonblinded study., Animals: Twenty-nine Dalmatian puppies, <5 months of age, referred to the Veterinary Faculty Clinics, Burdur, Turkey., Materials and Methods: The diameter of the tracheal lumen was assessed using lateral cervical radiographs and the ETS was determined for each puppy. The relationships between ETS and body mass, age, dimensions of carpal and digital pads of the thoracic limb, length of the philtrum and the distance between the philtrum and lateral nasal edges were analysed statistically., Results: The linear relationships between the ETS and the vertical length of the fourth digital pad (r2 = 0.915), and body mass (r2 = 0.908) were higher than with other parameters. Two predictive formulae for ETS derived from regression lines are: ETS +/- SE (0.20) = [body mass (kg) x 6/10]+2.5 and ETS +/- SE (0.19) = [vertical length of fourth digital pad (cm) x 6] - 2., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: These formulae provide a practical guide to ETS selection in Dalmatian puppies.

Abstract

The cranial cervical ganglion comprises neurons of especial functional importance for the head. Six specimens of heads of adult donkeys of both sexes, all of which had been exsanguinated and perfused with 10% neutral formalin for teaching purposes, were dissected to derive a gross description of the location, arrangement and branches of the cranial cervical ganglion (ganglion cervicale craniale) bilaterally. The ganglion was irregular fusiform-shaped or flattened, and reddish-grey in colour. It was 1.9-2.1 mm in length and 0.7-0.8 mm in thickness. The ganglion was located beneath the mandibular gland, caudal to the ramus of the mandible and diverticle of the guttural pouch, and ventral to the atlanto-axial joint. The branches of the ganglion were the internal and external carotid nerves, the jugular nerve, and a branch communicating with the ventral branch of the first cervical nerve fibres.
