1. Gap structure of the non-symmorphic superconductor LaNiGa2 probed by muSR

Abstract

We report muon spin rotation (muSR) measurements of the temperature dependence of the absolute value of the magnetic penetration depth and the magnetic field dependence of the vortex core size in the mixed state of the non-symmorphic superconductor LaNiGa2. The temperature dependence of the normalized superfluid density is shown to be well described by a two-band model with strong interband coupling. Consistent with a strong coupling of the superconducting condensates in two different bands, we show that the field dependence of the vortex core size resembles that of a single-band superconductor. Our results lend support to the proposal that LaNiGa2 is a fully-gapped, internally antisymmetric nonunitary spin-triplet superconductor., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

In this paper a description is given of the SFXC software correlator, developed and maintained at the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE). The software is designed to run on generic Linux-based computing clusters. The correlation algorithm is explained in detail, as are some of the novel modes that software correlation has enabled, such as wide-field VLBI imaging through the use of multiple phase centres and pulsar gating and binning. This is followed by an overview of the software architecture. Finally, the performance of the correlator as a function of number of CPU cores, telescopes and spectral channels is shown., Comment: Accepted by Experimental Astronomy

10. Far-infrared treatment of experimental sinusitis in rabbits: a pilot study.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Thermal therapy has existed for thousands of years and dates back to ancient civilizations such as the Finns, Romans, ancient Chinese, American Indians, and Egyptians. Sun therapy is a form of natural Far Infrared Rays (FIR) thermal therapy. Far infrared rays are invisible rays with the longest wavelength of natural sunlight. However, sun-bathing should only be done in moderation, as sunlight contains ultraviolet rays that can burn and damage the skin. More than 30 million people in Asia, Europe, and Australia receive Far Infrared Therapy with FIR lamps. They emit 2-25-micron wavebands. We aimed to investigate whether FIR therapy that uses a similar waveband improves sinusitis symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 10 New Zealand rabbits of both sexes, 7-8 months old, with an average weight of 1.8-2.4 kg. They were divided into four study groups. Sinusitis was induced in rabbits by blocking the sinus ostium, whereas some were left as control. Far infrared treatment with an infra-sin device was given with or without antibiotics. Mucosal samples were evaluated microscopically regarding epithelial eruption, epithelial vacuolization, interstitial edema, vascular congestion, leukocyte infiltration, and mucosal thickening. RESULTS: We found clinical and histopathological improvements in rabbits with sinusitis on the right side of the nose, to which we applied FIR treatment with the device Infra-Sin. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings in this animal study led us to conclude that it would be beneficial to study the effects of FIR treatment on people with allergic rhinitis and sinusitis and to identify the optimal dosing, treatment duration, and intensity. To add to our findings, looking into whether FIR therapy can be used as an alternative to antibiotic treatment for human sinusitis is essential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

15. Health Literacy among Adults: A Study from Turkey

Abstract

Patients' health literacy is increasingly recognized as a critical factor affecting health communication and outcomes. We performed this study to assess the levels of health literacy by using Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine (REALM) and Newest Vital Sign (NVS) instruments. Patients (n = 456) at a family medicine clinic completed in-person interviews, REALM and NVS tests which were translated into the Turkish language by translation-back translation process. Additional questions regarding demographic characteristics were also collected. The mean scores (mean [plus or minus] standard error) for REALM and NVS were 60.29 [plus or minus] 0.32 and 2.60 [plus or minus] 0.08, respectively. The REALM test scores showed that 2.7% had inadequate (less than or equal to 6th grade), 38.6% marginal (7th to 8th grade) and 58.7% (greater than or equal to 9th grade) adequate health literacy. The NVS test score revealed a proportion of 28.1% had adequate health literacy. Educational attainment was the most important demographic characteristic found to be related to the health literacy. Reading and vocabulary skills were better than numerical capabilities. Female, primary school educated and poor economic condition participants and those who were older had the lowest scores in both the tests. (Contains 5 tables and 2 figures.)

Abstract

In this chapter the derivation of the viscous integral boundary layer equations is presented in an unsteady, two-dimensional form. Closure sets for both laminar and turbulent flow conditions together with a laminar to turbulent transition method are given. The solution methods for the inviscid region and the viscous-inviscid interaction coupling scheme are briefly discussed. The numerical solution of the integral boundary layer equations are first presented assuming a prescribed solution for the inviscid flow region and then for the coupled viscous-inviscid interacting boundary layer method.

Abstract

Innovations in leading edge protective wraps or protective coatings are currently being developed to counter the effects of leading edge erosion and damage on wind turbine blades. Concurrently, the design and development of vortex generators (VGs) is taking place to counter aerodynamic stall and enhance the aerodynamic performance of wind turbine blades. This project aims at research and analysis for the refinement of the design and development of an innovative solution, namely “fit for purpose sleeve”, which can couple the leading edge protection with the vortex generators (VGs) and analyze the performance of these VGs with a CFD method developed within this project. One of the main tasks of this project is to first complete the development of a pressurebased incompressible Naviery;Stokes method and implement it in the open source CFD suite SU2, for wind energy applications and then apply it for the above mentioned VG design and finally analyze the effect on the performance on a blade. As the first main deliverable the development of the CFD method is completed and the method together with verification and validation is published on various platforms including the AIAA SciTech 2020 Conference.
