4. Distance Invariant Sparse Autoencoder for Wireless Signal Strength Mapping

Abstract

Wireless signal strength based localization can enable robust localization for robots using inexpensive sensors. For this, a location-to-signal-strength map has to be learned for each access point in the environment. Due to the ubiquity of Wireless networks in most environments, this can result in tens or hundreds of maps. To reduce the dimensionality of this problem, we employ autoencoders, which are a popular unsupervised approach for feature extraction and data compression. In particular, we propose the use of sparse autoencoders that learn latent spaces that preserve the relative distance between inputs. Distance invariance between input and latent spaces allows our system to successfully learn compact representations that allow precise data reconstruction but also have a low impact on localization performance when using maps from the latent space rather than the input space. Abstract

This paper reports on the results of comparing different types of tensile testing methods that are used to evaluate thin-film properties. We tested the same material fabricated on a single wafer using different testing techniques at five different research institutions. The testing methods were different in the way the specimen was gripped. Materials tested were single-crystal silicon (SCS), polysilicon, nickel, and titanium films. Specimens with three different shapes were processed through the same fabrication steps. The tensile strength, fracture strain, and Young's modulus of the films were measured and compared. The measured values of the mechanical properties of all the testing methods were in good agreement with each other, thus demonstrating their accuracy. Abstract

The taste cells of flies have two kinds of receptor sites which make them sensitive to sweetness. The area which receives the sweetness is covered by these receptor sites. The taste cells of a blowfly were used to study the two types of sugar-binding protein separated from the labellar extract by electrophoresis. The two proteins are common to the receptor sites by their sugar-binding characteristics and affinities. The dissociation constant and molecular weight of the two proteins vary, although both are insoluble in water. The taste cells are situated on the taste receptor membrane, with the proteins serving as taste receptor molecules.
