6. Teachers' Perspectives of Parents in Rural African Communities

- Abstract
Teachers' perspectives of their pupils' parents are a critical element of the relationship between schools, families, and communities. However, in various rural African communities, teachers' views of parents' perspectives and practices around schooling are primarily ones of deficit rather than strength. This paper deepens this literature by offering insight into teachers' perspectives in two rural communities in Nigeria. Using an ethnographic approach and applying concepts from the capability approach, this paper explores teachers' perceptions of parents' values in relation to their children's schooling (parental functionings) and their views of the extent to which parents are able to pursue these functionings. The findings resonate with the existing deficit perspectives in the literature. In addition, the findings expand the literature by revealing an empathetic dimension to these deficit perspectives, suggesting that current evidence around teachers' uniformly deficit perspectives of parents offers only a partial view. Illuminating the empathy that underpins teachers' perspectives offers the possibility of finding common ground between schools and families which may widen opportunities for forging or deepening positive parent-teacher relationships which support children's social, emotional, and academic development.

10. Reimagining the Researcher-Participant Ethics Relationship: A Participant-Centred, Values-Based Ethics Approach in Comparative and International Education

- Abstract
Conventional approaches to ethics in comparative and international educational research often entail researchers seeking institutional ethics approval; attempting to manage fieldwork's practical ethical dilemmas using institutional and disciplinary protocols; and 'writing up' methodology, primarily an account of the institutional ethics approval process. This approach largely excludes participants' conceptions of ethics, manifested through their ethical values, virtues, worldviews, knowledge, perspectives, traditions, norms, epistemologies, etc. This paper proposes a participant-centred, values-based approach which deepens the conventional approach by positioning participants' values alongside institutional and disciplinary ones; centring participants' values during fieldwork's ethical dilemmas; and articulating a situated ethics account. This alternative approach deepens researchers' capabilities for situated ethical action, and underscores the need for continuous negotiation of ethics with participants towards meaningful ethical partnerships. Such partnerships are ultimately facilitated by institutional ethics committees' flexibility in enabling, and even encouraging, researcher-participant ethical negotiations at various stages of research.

Tuberous sclerosis (TS) is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with variable penetrance characterised by glial cell tumor which arises from the cerebral and the retina. Blindness in association with Tuberous sclerosis (TS) is rare. When visual loss occurs it may be associated with hamartomas from retinal or optic nerve involvement or from intracranial (brain) tumours that affect either the part of the brain that processes visual information or from optic nerve damage following raised intracranial pressure. Very few cases of TS with blindness have been reported globally. Deterioration in academic performance might be the first pointer to the visual impairment. We report a case of a 13 year old girl who presented with increasing number of facial rash over an 11years period, recurrent headache and deteriorating academic performance of 1year and loss of vision of 6months with a recent episode of convulsion. Similar skin rashes without other associated symptoms were noticed on the mother and one of the younger siblings. She was a Tanner stage one in development. She had facialangiofibromas, shagreen patches over the left hypochondria, back regions and face. Ophthalmic evaluation showed a visual acuity of being able to count fingers at not more than one meter from the face and only perception of light in the right and left eye respectively, both eyes had brisk pupillary activities, good mydriasis and clear media. The retinal and optic nerve head appeared normal in the right eye whereas in the left eye was a huge tuberous hamartoma of the optic disc and macular as well as generalised vascular occlusion and subretinal fluid. The Computerized tomography (CT) scan showed an Intraventricular tumour, with calcification within the tumours and subependymal. There was associated obstructive hydrocephalus. Patient was managed by a multidisciplinaryteam of ophthalmologists, neurosurgeons and radiologists, co- ordinated by a paediatrician. Conclusion: The diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) was based on the lesions found on clinical examination, imaging, and pathologic studies. The blindness was multi-factorial in cause including intracranial, retinal and optic nerve tumours. Comprehensive medical history, detailed physical examinations and neuroimaging study are essential in making a diagnosis of TSC. Our patient was mis-diagnosed at various health facilities for many years. This delay in making appropriate diagnosis and instituting treatment could have contributed to the eventual outcome.

Abstract Prostate cancer (PCa) is a complex and biologically diverse disease with no curative treatment options at present. This study aims to utilize computational methods to explore potential anti-PCa compounds based on differentially expressed genes (DEGs), with the goal of identifying novel therapeutic indications or repurposing existing drugs. The methods employed in this study include DEGs-to-drug prediction, pharmacokinetics prediction, target prediction, network analysis, and molecular docking. The findings revealed a total of 79 upregulated DEGs and 110 downregulated DEGs in PCa, which were used to identify drug compounds capable of reversing the dysregulated conditions (dexverapamil, emetine, parthenolide, dobutamine, terfenadine, pimozide, mefloquine, ellipticine, and trifluoperazine) at a threshold probability of 20% on several molecular targets, such as serotonin receptors 2a/2b/2c, HERG protein, adrenergic receptors alpha-1a/2a, dopamine D3 receptor, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), epidermal growth factor receptor erbB1 (EGFR), tyrosine-protein kinases, and C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5). Molecular docking analysis revealed that terfenadine binding to inducible nitric oxide synthase (-7.833 kcal.mol−1) and pimozide binding to HERG (-7.636 kcal.mol−1). Overall, binding energy ΔGbind (Total) at 0 ns was lower than that of 100 ns for both the Terfenadine-iNOS complex (-101.707 to -103.302 kcal.mol−1) and Ellipticine-TOPIIα complex (-42.229 to -58.780 kcal.mol−1). In conclusion, this study provides insight on molecular targets that could possibly contribute to the molecular mechanisms underlying PCa. Further preclinical and clinical studies are required to validate the therapeutic effectiveness of these identified drugs in PCa disease.

Background: Xylopia parviflora is a novel botanical in Modern Chinese Medicine that contains bioactive constituents including alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenoids, which are the pharmacologically active components in various Chinese herbal formulations such as Coptis chinensis (alkaloid-rich herbs), Ginkgo biloba (flavonoid-rich herbs) and Artemisia annua (terpenoid-rich herbs). Objective: This investigation sought to evaluate the anxiolytic and antidepressant-like effects of the hydroethanol leaf extract of Xylopia parviflora using mouse models. We elucidated the roles of noradrenaline, serotonin, cyclooxygenase-2, and reactive oxidative species in mediating its antidepressant effects, providing a fresh perspective on the pharmacological activity of Xylopia parviflora. Methods: The acute toxicity of XPE was assessed following OECD guideline 420. Established behavioral tests were used to evaluate the anxiolytic (including the hole-board, open field, elevated plus maze, and light/dark exploration assessments) and antidepressant (encompassing the forced swim and tail suspension tests) effects of the extract. Mice received treatments of distilled water (10 mL/kg, serving as the negative control), fluoxetine (20 mg/kg, acting as the reference medication), and XPE (at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg). The concentrations of noradrenaline, serotonin, and COX-2 within the brain tissue were quantified using ELISA kits. The levels of antioxidant biomarkers were evaluated using standardized commercial assay kits. Results: The oral/intraperitoneal LD50 for the extract was established at 2000 mg/kg. In the behavioral assessments designed to measure anxiolytic effects, XPE significantly mitigated anxiety levels in mice, as evidenced by an increase in exploratory behaviors (including head dips, sectional crossings, general square crossings, rearing, and assisted rearing) and an increased time spent in the brightly illuminated compartments. Concerning the antidepressant evaluations, XPE significantly reduced depression-like behaviors in mice, which was indicated by an increased latency to immobility and a decrease in the duration of immobility. XPE was found to modulate noradrenaline and serotonin transmissions, attenuate oxidative species, and inhibit COX-2 activity. Conclusion: The findings above demonstrate that Xylopia parviflora possesses anxiolytic and antidepressant-like activities. The antidepressant property of XPE, as revealed in this study, may be attributable to the enhancement of biogenic amines (specifically noradrenaline and serotonin), the suppression of oxidative species, and the inhibition of COX-2 activity.

Background: Studies suggest that medicinal plant extracts can help reduce the neuron degeneration associated with diabetes. In this study, the neuroprotective effect of the alkaloid-rich extract from the leaves of Lannea egregia was assessed in rats with diabetes induced by streptozotocin (STZ). Methods: Lannea egregia alkaloid-rich analysis was carried out via a known procedure. The rats were randomly assigned into five treatment groups (n = 8): normal control, diabetic-induced rats (45 mg/kg STZ), and diabetic rats treated with low doses of Lannea egregia leaf alkaloid-rich extract (50 mg/kg b.w, LEL) and high (100 mg/kg b.w, LEH) (300 mg/kg and 150 mg/kg), and metformin (200 mg/kg). On 22nd day of the experiment, animals were sacrificed, and their blood and brains were collected for neuro-biomarker analysis. Results: Diabetic-induced rats that received metformin, LEL and LEH exhibited considerably reduced levels of dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, NO, MDA, and AChE, BChE activities when compared to untreated diabetic animals. Additionally, rats with diabetes that received treatment with metformin, LEL and LEH displayed a noticeable increase in ENTPDase, Na/K ATPase, GST, CAT, GPx, and SOD activities when compared to the untreated diabetic rats. Histological examination revealed improved brain architecture in the treated groups in contrast to those in diabetic-induced rats. Conclusion: The alkaloid-rich extracts of Lannea egregia might be effective in normalizing brain damage caused by complications of diabetes mellitus.

Hepatocellular carcinoma is a prevalent form of liver cancer that is life threatening. Many chemically synthesized anti-cancer drugs have various degrees of side effects. Hence, this study investigated the effect of FEAC interventions on NDEA-CCl4-induced HCAR in male Wistar rats. HCAR was induced by intraperitoneal administration of 200 mg/kg of NDEA and 0.5 mL/kg CCl4 (as a promoter of HCAR). Following the induction of HCAR, rats were treated differently with two different doses (25 and 50 mg/kg) of FEAC. HCAR induction was confirmed by the significant elevation of serum levels of ALT, AST, and α-FP. Also elevated significantly were liver levels of Akt/PKB, NF-κB, TNF-α, MDA, GSH, and activities of GST, SOD, and CAT, while levels of liver p53 and Nrf2 were significantly lowered compared with normal rats. Treatment interventions with both 25 and 50 mg/kg of FEAC against the DEN-CCl4-induced HCAR gave comparable effects, marked by a significant reduction in the levels of serum ALT, AST and α-FP, as well as liver levels of MDA, GSH, Akt/PKB, NF-κB, TNF-α, GST, SOD, and CAT, while levels of liver p53 and Nrf2 were significantly elevated compared with normal rats. Put together and judging by the outcomes of this study, FEAC being a potent antioxidant may also be potent against chemical-induced HCAR via upregulation of p53 and Nrf2, as well as downregulation of the Akt/PKB-NF-κB pathway in rats.

The call for a transition to a green economy has been a recurring issue in Nigeria for over a decade. However, there was limited focus on the relationship between waste recycling and the green economy in previous studies. This study explores the nexus between waste recycling and the green economy, examining how waste recycling can be leveraged to foster a green economy in Nigeria. A descriptive qualitative approach was used, and relevant literature from secondary data sources and context were analyzed. The results indicate that waste recycling has not been fully embraced in Nigeria, especially at the household level. Therefore, waste recycling is primarily driven by the informal sector and entrepreneurs. Furthermore, the study reveals the diverse opportunities available through implementing a green economy. It recommends a green economy policy that promotes equity, economic incentives for household waste recycling, and support for entrepreneurs interested in partnering with the government.

The potential usage of activated carbon from plantain peel (Musa paradisiaca) (TPPC) and unactivated carbon from plantain peel (UPPC) for the removal of Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) from water systems was investigated. The TPPC and UPPC were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Adsorption experiments were conducted as a function of adsorbent weight (2 – 10 g), temperature (30 -50 °C), and solution pH (2 - 9) under an adsorbent packed column. The Optimum removal efficiency of 98.23 % was achieved in the column studies under the following conditions: pH = 5, the dosage of adsorbent = 5 g/100 mL, temperature = 30 °C. The batch adsorption process was employed to evaluate the kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics of the adsorption processes. The equilibrium study showed that Langmuir among other isotherm models applied performed better in fitting the data. Additionally, the kinetic data was best described by the pseudo-second-order model (R2 > 0.97), indicating a chemisorption mechanism. Furthermore, the thermodynamic calculations of the adsorption process suggest that HCH adsorption was exothermic (ΔH = -110.87) and spontaneous (-ΔG).

This paper examined a total of two hundred and fifty (250) samples of slender amaranth vegetable (Amaranthus viridis) and bush-okra (Corchorus olitorius) from farms and markets in the communities around Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State of Nigeria between January and July 2023 for evaluation of parasites that infect humans using the sedimentation method. Parasites isolated from vegetable samples from the farm showed that Ascaris lumbricoides (17.6%) was the most encountered followed by Entamoeba histolytica (11.2%) and the least was Enterobius vermicularis (3.2%). In the market samples, Ascaris (11.2%) was the most prevalent parasites encountered while Trichuris trichiura, Strongyloides stercoralis and E. vermicularis (1.6%) were the least prevalent. One hundred and fourteen (45.6%) samples were contaminated with various parasites. Of the total contaminated vegetable, 74/125 (59.2%) were found in the farm vegetables while 40/125 (32.0%) were encountered in the market vegetables. Corchorus olitorius were found to be more contaminated in both the farms 39/110 (35.5%) and market 23/110 (20.9%). From the study, it was seen that the rate of contamination was highest in the month of July, while the month of January had the least rate of contamination for both farm and market vegetable samples. The difference in the contamination rate in both farm and market samples were seen to be significant (P < 0.05). This study recommends proper washing of vegetables prior to consumption and proper sewage treatment before usage as fertilizer.

Diabetes is a group of medical conditions characterized by the body's inability to effectively control blood glucose levels, due to either insufficient insulin synthesis in type 1 diabetes or inadequate insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes. According to this research, the PI3K/AKT pathway of Ocimum gratissimum leaf flavonoid-rich extracts in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats was studied. We purchased and used a total of forty (40) male Wistar rats for the study. We divided the animals into five (5) different groups: normal control (Group A), diabetic control (Group B), low dose (150 mg/kg body weight) of Ocimum gratissimum flavonoid-rich leaf extract (LDOGFL) (Group C), high dose (300 mg/kg body weight) of Ocimum gratissimum flavonoid-rich leaf extract (HDOGFL) (Group D), and 200 mg/kg of metformin (MET) (Group E). Streptozotocin induced all groups except Group A, which serves as the normal control group. The experiment lasted for 21 days, following which we sacrificed the animals and harvested their brains for biochemical analysis on the 22nd day. We carried out an analysis that included reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione transferases (GST), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), along with GLUT4, MDA, pro-inflammatory cytokines, NO, neurotransmitters, cholinergic enzyme activities, cardiolipin, and the gene expression of PI3K/AKT. The obtained result indicates that the flavonoid-rich extracts of O. gratissimum significantly enhanced the levels of GSH, GST, CAT, GPx, and SOD, as well as GLUT4 and cardiolipin. The levels of GSH, GST, CAT, GPx, and SOD, as well as GLUT4 and cardiolipin, were significantly increased by gratissimum. Moreover, the extracts decrease the levels of MDA, pro-inflammatory cytokines, NO, neurotransmitters, and cholinergic enzyme activities. Abstract Background African ancestry populations have the highest burden of stroke worldwide, yet the genetic basis of stroke in these populations is obscure. The Stroke Investigative Research and Educational Network (SIREN) is a multicenter study involving 16 sites in West Africa. We conducted the first-ever genome-wide association study (GWAS) of stroke in indigenous Africans. Methods Cases were consecutively recruited consenting adults (aged > 18 years) with neuroimaging-confirmed ischemic stroke. Stroke-free controls were ascertained using a locally validated Questionnaire for Verifying Stroke-Free Status. DNA genotyping with the H3Africa array was performed, and following initial quality control, GWAS datasets were imputed into the NIH Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) release2 from BioData Catalyst. Furthermore, we performed fine-mapping, trans-ethnic meta-analysis, and in silico functional characterization to identify likely causal variants with a functional interpretation. Results We observed genome-wide significant (P-value < 5.0E−8) SNPs associations near AADACL2 and miRNA (MIR5186) genes in chromosome 3 after adjusting for hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cardiac status in the base model as covariates. SNPs near the miRNA (MIR4458) gene in chromosome 5 were also associated with stroke (P-value < 1.0E−6). The putative genes near AADACL2, MIR5186, and MIR4458 genes were protective and novel. SNPs associations with stroke in chromosome 2 were more than 77 kb from the closest gene LINC01854 and SNPs in chromosome 7 were more than 116 kb to the closest gene LINC01446 (P-value < 1.0E−6). In addition, we observed SNPs in genes STXBP5-AS1 (chromosome 6), GALTN9 (chromosome 12), FANCA (chromosome 16), and DLGAP1 (chromosome 18) (P-value < 1.0E−6). Both genomic regions near genes AADACL2 and MIR4458 remained significant following fine mapping. Conclusions Our findings identify potential roles of regulatory miRNA, intergenic non-coding DNA, and intronic non-coding RNA in the biology of ischemic stroke. These findings reveal new molecular targets that promise to help close the current gaps in accurate African ancestry-based genetic stroke’s risk prediction and development of new targeted interventions to prevent or treat stroke.

Parkia biglobosa (PB) is among the various underexploited nutritious plants. A comparative study was conducted on the effect processing PB has on the amino and fatty acid composition. Fermented (FPB), defatted (DPB), and protein isolates (PI) samples were prepared from Parkia biglobosa seeds using various processing methods, and evaluated using standard analytical protocols. The PI showed the highest significant total non-essential amino acids, essential amino acids, and conditionally essential amino acids when compared with FPB and DPB. In addition, the PI showed the highest significant (p < 0.05) total neutral amino acids, basic amino acids, total aromatic amino acids, and the lowest percentage cystine ratio of total sulphur amino acids and total amino acids in comparison with FPB and DPB. The PI also showed a better-predicted protein efficient ratio, essential amino acid index, biological value, protein content, and nutritional index than FPB and DPB. Furthermore, PI amino acid composition was compared favourably with the reference scores for a whole hen’s egg, preschool child, and provisional scoring pattern. Arginine and histidine values of PI were higher than the recommended values. The FPB (42.29%) showed the highest polyunsaturated fatty acids compared with the DPB (41.94%) and PI (26.7%). The dominant saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids were stearic acid (15.1 DPB), linoleic acid (42.29 DPB), and oleic acid (14.05 PI). The DPB (1.84) showed a better polyunsaturated to saturated (P:S) ratio than FPB (1.74) and PI (0.91). The results revealed that the processing methods improved the relative amino acid composition, whereas the fatty acid composition improved in DPB. Therefore, PI could serve as an alternative in the formulation of complementary foods.

The linear and nonlinear rheological behaviors of fish myofibrillar protein (FMP) paste with 75%, 82%, and 90% moisture content were evaluated using small-amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) and large-amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) tests. SAOS revealed pastes with 75% and 82% moisture exhibited solid-like behavior, characterized by higher storage modulus (G′) than loss modulus (G″), indicative of weak gel properties with a strong protein interaction. In contrast, the 90% moisture content showed more viscous behavior due to weakened protein–protein entanglements. The frequency exponent (n′ and n″) from the power law equation varied slightly (0.24 to 0.36), indicating limited sensitivity to changes in deformation rate during SAOS. LAOS tests revealed significant structural changes, with Lissajous–Bowditch curves revealing early nonlinearities at 10% strain for 90% moisture content. Decomposed Chebyshev coefficients (e3/e1, v3/v1, S, and T) indicated strain stiffening at lower strains for the 75% and 82% moisture pastes (i.e., < 50% strain for 75% and < 10% strain for 82%), transitioning to strain thinning at higher strains. Additionally, numerical model confirmed the predictability of the 3D printing process from the nonlinear rheological data, confirmed the suitability of the 75% and 82% moisture pastes for applications requiring structural integrity. These insights are essential for optimizing processing conditions in industrial applications. The findings suggest that the 75% and 82% moisture pastes are suitable for applications requiring structural integrity, while the 90% moisture paste is ideal for flow-based processes. This study investigated the impact of English Language proficiency testing on the pronunciation performance of undergraduates in South-west. Nigeria. The study was a descriptive survey research design. The target population size was 1243 (200-level) undergraduates drawn from eight tertiary institutions. The instruments used for data collection were the English Language Proficiency Test and Pronunciation Test. The English Language proficiency test was used to measure the performance of students in English Language and was adopted from the Post-UTME past questions from Babcock University Admissions Office on Post Unified Tertiary Admissions and Matriculation Examinations screening exercise (Post-UTME) for undergraduates in English and Linguistics. The test contains 20 objective English questions with optional answers. The instruments were validated through experts' advice as the items in the instrument are considered appropriate in terms of subject content and instructional objectives while Cronbach alpha technique was used to estimate the reliability coefficient of the English Proficiency test, a value of 0.883 was obtained. The research questions were answered with mean and standard deviation while hypothesis was tested with Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient at 0.05 alpha level. The findings of the study revealed that the mean value of the students' English Proficiency and pronunciation scores were 66.36 and 74.21% respectively, which showed that the students' English proficiency and pronunciation performance were above average and high result respectively; there was a significant positive relationship between proficiency in English Language and pronunciation performance of the students who participated in the study (r = 0.589; p < 0.05).

33. Possible Impact of COVID-19 on Senior Secondary School Students' Performance in Science Education in Nigeria

The recent outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has led to the total lockdown of major cities globally which resulted in the early closure of schools in the cities affected, Nigeria inclusive. It is hypothesized that COVID-19 may have a negative outcome on the performance of senior secondary school students in class 3 (SS3) who are yet to write their 2020 external examination (West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination as well as National Examination Council) especially in the science subjects namely Biology, Physics and Chemistry. This study collected data from three teachers who are science experts and head of their respective departments in three government secondary schools in Ado-Ekiti local government area of Ekiti State, Nigeria. A semi-structured interview was used to collect data from the teachers through phone calls and WhatsApp chats. This qualitative study employed a case study research approach. Findings from this study revealed that there is the possibility of a further drop in the pass rate (%) of senior secondary school students' in this year's external examinations if this pandemic is not contained soon knowing fully well that the school academic calendar has already been disrupted due to early closure of schools in Nigeria. As part of COVID-19 relief package, recommendations are made to the Federal government of Nigeria and policymakers to distribute iPads and electronic tablets preloaded with e-textbooks in these subject areas to SS3 students and their teachers to facilitate online learning as this will enhance their performance in Science subjects in this year's national examination.

Abstract The increasing effects of climate change have intensified floods globally, especially in Africa, where millions of people live in poverty and are highly vulnerable to flooding. Climate change disproportionately affects the vulnerable, who are least equipped to handle its consequences, by exacerbating their situation. One such consequence is the potential for increased human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission. Africa has been disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic. It now faces the additional challenge of a changing climate and floods, which are capable of increasing HIV transmission in Africa through several pathways. They can force population displacement and migration, leading to the expansion of sexual networks among people living with HIV (PLWHIV). They may also create conditions conducive to the spread of other infections. Floods can cause food insecurity, which can result in various sexual behaviors that expose people to HIV infection. As global warming is linked to a decrease in African food production capacity, the effect of food insecurity on HIV may be prominent in countries where transactional sexual means is a major route of HIV transmission. Floods can also hinder the provision of HIV services, such as pre‐ and postexposure prophylaxis and antiretroviral therapy distribution, which may worsen the health outcomes of PLWHIV and promote HIV transmission, particularly in rural and remote communities. It is crucial to develop a climate‐resilient framework, including education, sustained access to HIV services, and promotion of social welfare for HIV prevention and treatment, to address the complex relationship between HIV, floods, and climate change.

Background: Doxorubicin (DOX) is an anthracycline antibiotic primarily utilized in the treatment of various solid tumors, including those affecting the cervix, ovaries, breasts, uterus, lungs, as well as certain blood cancers. However, the nephrotoxicity connected to DOX therapy restricts its clinical use. In an Ancient Chinese Medicine used Lime (Citrus. aurantifolia) Peel was employed to address cramps, colic pain, cold, and as an appetite stimulant. Lime is known as ''Zhi qiao'' in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), in addition to its nephroprotective, antioxidant and immunostimulatory properties the peel had been noted for its effectiveness in regulating vital energy, used to treat cough, abdominal distention and constipation. Objective: The purpose of this research is to evaluate the potential protective effect of Citrus aurantifolia peel extract (CAPE) in alleviating the nephrotoxicity generated by doxorubicin (DOX) injection in rats. Methods: Thirty Wister albino rats were randomly and equally separated into six groups (n = 5), and they were treated as follows: group I received distilled water only (baseline), toxicant groups administered with 15 mg/kg, i.p. DOX, 24 h after, groups II, III IV, V and VI were treated with distilled water (negative control), Alpha lipoic acid, 150 mg/kg (positive control) and 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg of CAPE respectively, orally for seven days. Results: DOX caused kidney injury after a single intraperitoneal injection, as shown by substantial changes in kidney biomarkers, histological irregularities, and the reduction of antioxidant defense mechanisms (reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase and catalase). CAPE treatment resulted in significant improvements in the amended renal biomarkers (urea, creatinine, albumin and uric acid), haematological parameters, antioxidative markers, and malondialdehyde. The present findings indicated that CAPE could reduce lipid peroxidation (LPO) and reactive oxygen species production, and observable histological improvements supported this result. Conclusion: Our results point out that CAPE is a potential therapeutic alternative for the prevention of DOX-related nephrotoxicity.

Introduction: Enteral nutrition is the mainstay of nutritional support in surgical patients. Ileus is the temporary inhibition of peristalsis. Primary post-operative ileus (PPI) occurs postoperatively; thence patients are traditionally kept on nil per oris (NPO) until PPI resolves, due to safety concerns. This study aims to determine the necessity or otherwise of this practice in paediatric surgical patients. Materials and methods: A prospective, randomized control trial, in patients younger than 15 years. The early feeding group (EFG) commenced enteral feeding on the first post-operative day while controls commenced feeding after resolution of PPI. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 20.0, P ≤ 0.05 was regarded as significant. The primary outcome was tolerability of enteral feeds while secondary outcomes were complication rates, time to full enteral diet, and duration of hospital stay. Results: There were 56 patients, 28 in each study group. Tolerability of oral feeds at initial commencement was similar in both groups (24 (85.7%) EFG versus 27 (96.4%) controls P = 0.16). Full enteral feeding was achieved faster in EFG than in controls (71.1 ± 28.7 hours versus 92.5 ± 31.4 hours, p=0.011). Post-operative hospital stay was shorter in EFG than controls (7.46 ± 3.8 days versus11.1 ± 5.2 days, p=0.009). Conclusions: Early enteral feeding was well tolerated, brought about a faster return to a full enteral diet, and shorter post-operative hospital stay, it also did not cause a higher complication rate. Therefore, delaying feeding until the resolution of PPI after laparotomy appears unnecessary.

Penile agenesis is complete absence of the penis in an otherwise normal phenotypic and genotypic male at birth that results from failure of development of the genital tubercle. It is an extremely rare anomaly that may be associated with anomalies in other organ systems, the extent and severity of which may affect the prognosis. The management is challenging and may have far reaching implications for the individual and family. While gender reassignment with bilateral orchidectomy and feminising genitoplasty has been carried out for most patients, significant psychosexual and social issues related to the male identity may occur due to foetal or postnatal sex steroid imprinting. We report a neonate with penile agenesis with bilateral renal agenesis and anorectal malformation.

Mucuna pruriens contains saponins and flavonoids, which help to decrease cholesterol, treat hypertension, provide protein and vitamins and prevent premature ageing. This research followed the NIH guidelines (NIH publication 85–23, revised in 1996). Rats weighing 200–250 g were assigned into six groups (n = 6), normal saline only (control), normal saline (NS), Ethyl acetate fraction of Mucuna pruriens leaves (EAFMP) (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg) and Silymarin (100 mg/kg) treated orally for five days, diclofenac (DFN) was administered on days 3 and 4 via intraperitoneal route, biochemical and histology parameters were determined in serum and liver. This research revealed that treatment with EAFMP reversed the elevation of liver enzymes, total bilirubin, LDL and total cholesterol and lipid peroxidation; liver SOD, GSH, and CAT were elevated in EAFMP and Silymarin groups. The hepatic histological lesions in EAFMP were reduced in a dose-dependent manner. This research shows that EAFMP attenuates the deleterious effect of diclofenac-induced liver toxicity in rats.

Currently, there is no known cure for diabetes. Different pharmaceutical therapies have been approved for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), some are in clinical trials and they have been classified according to their route or mechanism of action. Insulin types, sulfonylureas, biguanides, alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, thiazolidinediones, meglitinides, sodium–glucose cotransporter type 2 inhibitors, and incretin-dependent therapies (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists: GLP-1R, and dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors: DPP-4). Although some of the currently available drugs are effective in the management of T2DM, the side effects resulting from prolonged use of these drugs remain a serious challenge. GLP-1R agonists are currently the preferred medications to include when oral metformin alone is insufficient to manage T2DM. Medicinal plants now play prominent roles in the management of various diseases globally because they are readily available and affordable as well as having limited and transient side effects. Recently, studies have reported the ability of phytochemicals to activate glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R), acting as an agonist just like the GLP-1R agonist with beneficial effects in the management of T2DM. Consequently, we propose that careful exploration of phytochemicals for the development of novel therapeutic candidates as GLP-1R agonists will be a welcome breakthrough in the management of T2DM and the co-morbidities associated with T2DM.

50. The Impact of Assessment for Learning on Learner Performance in Life Science

- Abstract
This study investigated the impact of 'assessment for learning' on learner performance in Life Science. Simple random sampling was used to select four schools from the King Cetshwayo District of KwaZulu Natal Province, South Africa, to participate in the study. A quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest comparison group design was used, involving four schools--two forming the 'treatment condition' while the other two served as the 'comparison group'. Altogether, 160 grade eleven learners participated in the study. Two teachers were trained to use assessment for learning (AfL) as an instructional approach, while the two teachers of the comparison group used their usual instructional approaches. Data were analysed using SPSS (V23) and the statistical technique used was the 2-factor ANOVA with repeated measures. The result revealed that learners following an AfL instructional approach performed statistically higher that those following normal classroom instruction. This result is discussed, and recommendations made in respect of both classroom practice and further research. The findings of this study had implications for policy, further research as well as instructional and assessment approaches to be used in the teaching of Life Science in the South African education system.
