The identification of the learning environment and the understanding of how students learn will help teacher to facilitate learning and plan a curriculum to achieve the learning outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate undergraduate physiotherapy clinical students' perception of University of Ibadan's learning environment. Using the quantitative research approach, a cross-sectional survey design was used in this study with data collected through the completion of the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire by 54 consenting undergraduate physiotherapy clinical students in the University of Ibadan who have had clinical education for at least one semester. The mean 131/200 indicated that the physiotherapy clinical students' perceptions of their learning environment were "more positive than negative". Use of score descriptors for the subscale scores for the DREEM indicated that students' perception of learning was positive, and their perceptions of the teachers were that they were "moving in the right direction". Their academic self-perception was positive, as was their perception of the atmosphere. The students' social self-perception was "not too bad". Only six out of the 50 items were reported to have mean scores of less than 2.00, this implies that the items should be examined more closely, as they indicate problem areas. This study has provided useful information on student perceptions of their learning environment by using the DREEM inventory. The overall DREEM mean score indicating that the perceptions of the clinical physiotherapy students of their learning environment were "more positive than negative".

Purpose: The study determined the burden and characterized MSP among Nigerians with Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) into nociceptive or neuropathic pain. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 207 consecutively recruited T2DM subjects to assess and characterize MSP as neuropathic or nociceptive with the use of Nordic Musculoskeletal and S-LANSS standardized Questionnaires. Results: Of the 207 participants, there were 147 (71%) females with mean age of 59.7± 11.7 years. About 94.2% and 79.2% reported pain in at least one joint within 12 months and 7-day preceding the study, respectively. Ankle/foot is the most common site/region of reported pain in both the preceding 12 months and 7-day (58.5% versus 49.5%) while the least over the same period was at the elbow (22.6% versus 12.6%). Only 48.3% of the participants had restrictions in their activities of daily living (ADL) with 62.3% received treatment for self-reported pain. MSP was characterized predominantly as neuropathic among 27.5% of the participants which was highest among participants (36%) whose ADL were limited because of MSP. Conclusion: High prevalence of MSP was found among Nigerians with T2DM, more commonly reported in the ankle/foot region of the body with one in every five classified as neuropathic pain. Background: In Nigeria, there is a disparity among physiotherapists regarding therapeutic exercise as a core treatment for patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). The attitudes and beliefs of physiotherapists could influence this. Objective: To investigate Nigerian physiotherapists’ knowledge, attitude, and utilisation of evidence-based therapeutic exercises Design: A mixed-method of cross-sectional survey and focus group discussion. Setting: Secondary and tertiary health institutions in Nigeria Participants: Physiotherapists consecutively sampled from the selected institutions. Main outcome measures: Participants’ knowledge, attitude and utilisation of evidence-based therapeutic exercises for the management of knee OA Results: This study revealed that 81% of physiotherapists in Nigeria had a fair knowledge of evidence-based practice and the efficacy of therapeutic exercises in managing knee OA. Despite this fair knowledge, 95.3% had a poor attitude. The important emerging categories/themes are treatment preference, clinical experience, and strength of evidence. Conclusion: Physiotherapists in Nigeria have a fair knowledge of evidence-based therapeutic exercises in managing patients with knee OA, although there is a poor attitude and disparity between the use and current recommendations. Objective: The study aimed to compare the physical fitness of subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (ST2DM) and apparently healthy non-diabetic controls (NDC). Methods: Thirty-two ST2DMs and 32 NDCs were recruited for a comparative cross-sectional study. Flexibility, balance, power, and strength were assessed using sit-up and sit and reach (SR), one leg stand, horizontal jump (HJ), and hand grip tests, respectively. Cardiovascular endurance was assessed using Vo2max estimated with a 6-minute walk test. Also, body composition was estimated using body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and percent body mass. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The alpha level was set at p < 0.05. Results: Static balance was significantly higher in the NDCs (11.1 ± 12.6 vs 5.5 ± 5.0 sec; p = 0.047) than in the ST2DMs. Hand (34.6 ± 19.9 vs 23.6 ± 12.7 kg; p = 0.001) and leg (122.4 ± 42.8 vs 26.5 ± 43.9 cm; 0.001) strength/power were significantly higher in the NDC group compared with the ST2DM. The SR test, a measure of flexibility, was significantly higher in the NDC (SDM = 12.2 ± 19.8cm, NDC = 35.3 ± 8.8cm, p = 0.001). BMI (28.7 ± 4.3 vs 26.4 ± 41kgm-2; p = 0.048), WC (104.2 ± 8.0 vs 94.2 ± 8.7cm; p = 0.001) and WHR (1.0 ± 0.6 vs 0.9 ± 0.7; p = 0.001) were significantly higher in the ST2DM than in the NDC. There was no significant difference in the estimated VO2max between the subject group and the control group. Conclusion: Balance, flexibility, and strength were significantly lower, while measures of adiposity are significantly higher in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus compared with non-diabetic controls. Purpose:To investigate the impact of disability and sexual dysfunction on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) among Nigerian stroke survivors (SSv) and to determine their association using sexual functioning (SF), Global Disability Measure and Function (GDMF), and demographic profiles. Methods:This study involved 121 consecutive SSv attending healthcare services in two tertiary health facilities in Nigeria. Demographic details were obtained through interview while HRQoL, SF, and Global Disability (GD) were assessed using Stroke-Specific Quality of Life (SS-QoL-12), Changes in Sexual Functioning Questionnaire (CSFQ-14), and World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS-2.0), respectively. Determinants of HRQoL were explored using the Poisson regression analysis. Results:Most of the SSv had moderate/severe GD (95%) and low SF (86.8%). Their HRQoL decreased with increase in their age (p = 0.005) and with increase in GD (p = 0.001). This association remained unchanged even when adjusted for SF (p = 0.001). Those with low SF but with mild GD had relatively better HRQoL than those with moderate/severe GD even when they had higher SF. Their HRQoL was negatively impacted by their GD but not by their SF despite direct correlation between SF and HRQoL. With a unit increase in level of GD, there was 8% decrease in HRQoL scores in psychosocial and 17% decrease in physical domains. Conclusion:Although sexual dysfunction and global disability are prevalent among Nigerian SSv, their low HRQoL is determined by their disability and not by SF. Hence, effort at reducing global disability should be the focus of rehabilitation after stroke.Implication for RehabilitationGlobal functional and sexual deficiencies abound in stroke survivors and they impact negatively on their overall quality of life.Sexual dysfunction correlates negatively on physical and psychosocial wellbeing of stroke survivors.Rehabilitation goal(s) should focus disability reduction and improvement of sexual functioning to enhance quality of life.Rehabilitation professionals should equip themselves with tools to counsel stroke survivors on sex issue since sexual dysfunction is common post stroke. Background: Regular participation in physical activity (PA) programs is a key concept included in current public health guidelines. Therefore, this study was aimed to determine PA level among adult with type 2 diabetes. Methods: A cross-section of 122 participants selected consecutively were categorized as physically inactive or active using International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Data was assessed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: About 31% of the respondents were physically inactive. Residential areas were significantly associated with PA. A high proportion of those who lived in the metropolitan area were physically inactive. Less likely to be physically inactive were married (odds ratios [OR] =0.29, confidence interval [CI] =0.09-0.93) and living in an urban area (OR = 0.19, CI = 0.40-0.87). The degree holders are least physically inactive while the primary school leavers are highest. The median energy expenditure for walking, moderate and vigorous PA was 280.5, 80 and 0 MET-min/ week respectively. The sedentary behavior of the respondents was 288 min/day, behavior which increases with age. Conclusion: This study suggests that the prevalence of physical inactivity was high among type 2 diabetics and their sedentary behavior is over 4 h/day.
