Abstract

Obtaining microscopic structure-property relationships for grain boundaries are challenging because of the complex atomic structures that underlie their behavior. This has led to recent efforts to obtain these relationships with machine learning, but representing a grain boundary structure in a manner suitable for machine learning is not a trivial task. There are three key steps common to property prediction in grain boundaries and other variable-sized atom clustered structures. These are: (1) describe the atomic structure as a feature matrix, (2) transform the variable-sized feature matrices of different structures to a fixed length common to all structures, and (3) apply machine learning to predict properties from the transformed feature matrices. We examine these feature engineering steps to understand how they impact the accuracy of grain boundary energy predictions. A database of over 7000 grain boundaries serves to evaluate the different feature engineering combinations. We also examine how these combination of engineered features provide interpretability, or the ability to extract insightful physics from the obtained structure-property relationships., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

2. Facet and energy predictions in grain boundaries: lattice matching and molecular dynamics

Abstract

Many material properties can be traced back to properties of their grain boundaries. Grain boundary energy (GBE), as a result, is a key quantity of interest in the analysis and modeling of microstructure. A standard method for calculating grain boundary energy is molecular dynamics (MD); however, on-the-fly MD calculations are not tenable due to the extensive computational time required. Lattice matching (LM) is a reduced-order method for estimating GBE quickly; however, it has only been tested against a relatively limited set of data, and does not have a suitable means for assessing error. In this work, we use the recently published dataset of Homer et al. [1] to assess the performance of LM over the full range of GB space, and to equip LM with a metric for error estimation. LM is used to generate energy estimates, along with predictions of facet morphology, for each of the 7,304 boundaries in the Homer dataset. In keeping with prior work, it is observed that LM predictions of low energy boundaries matches well with MD results. Moreover, there is a good general agreement between LM and MD, and it is apparent that the error scales approximately linearly with the predicted energy value; this makes it possible to establish an empirical estimate on error for future LM calculations. An essential part of the LM method is the faceting relaxation, which corrects the expected energy by convexification across the compact space (S2) of boundary plane orientations. The original Homer dataset did not allow for faceting, but upon extended annealing, it was shown that facet patterns similar to those predicted by LM were emerging.

Worldwide, PTCLs represent approximately 12% of all NHLs and the 2008 World Health Organization (WHO) classification includes over 20 biologically and clinically distinct T/NK-cell neoplasms that differ significantly in presentation, pathology, and response to therapy. Because of the rarity and heterogeneity of these diseases, large clinical trials have not been conducted and optimal therapy is not well defined. Most subtypes are treated with similar combination chemotherapy regimens as used for aggressive B-cell NHL, but with poorer outcomes. 4. Elementary Content Teacher Perceptions Regarding Their ELL Instructional Practices

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore the instructional practices of elementary English language learner (ELL) teachers and how those practices are perceived by the teachers to be aligned with improved ELL academic performance. The study is grounded in Ladson-Billings' theory of culturally relevant pedagogy, which holds that student academic achievement and cultural identity should be affirmed. The research questions focused on exploring instructional practices used by teachers to support ELL learning and the teachers' perceptions of how their practices are aligned with improved ELL academic performance. The qualitative descriptive study was limited to three elementary schools in an Eastern school district. We analyzed data from lesson plans and semistructured interviews with nine general education teachers who taught in an elementary school in the geographical area. Using a priori, open, and axial coding, we analyzed data from lesson plans and semi-structured interviews with nine elementary school general education teachers who taught in a school in the geographical area. The findings demonstrated that positive strategies for cooperative learning and varied instructional practices were in use, but there is a need to build culturally appropriate and collaborative relationships with teachers of speakers of other languages and create a welcoming learning atmosphere for ELLs. A policy recommendation paper was developed to improve ELL pedagogy in content classes. Improved instruction for ELLs will contribute to positive social change by increasing ELL students' academic achievement.

Abstract

The space of possible grain boundary structures is vast, with 5 macroscopic, crystallographic degrees of freedom that define the character of a grain boundary. While numerous datasets of grain boundaries have examined this space in part or in full, we present a computed dataset of over 7304 unique aluminum grain boundaries in the 5D crystallographic space. Our sampling also includes a range of possible microscopic, atomic configurations for each unique 5D crystallographic structure, which total over 43 million structures. We present an overview of the methods used to generate this dataset, an initial examination of the energy trends that follow the Read-Shockley relationship, hints at trends throughout the 5D space, variations in GB energy when non-minimum energy structures are examined, and insights gained in machine learning of grain boundary energy structure-property relationships. 7. Can HRCT be used as a marker of airway remodelling in children with difficult asthma?

Abstract

Abstract Background Whole airway wall thickening on high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is reported to parallel thickening of the bronchial epithelial reticular basement membrane (RBM) in adult asthmatics. A similar relationship in children with difficult asthma (DA), in whom RBM thickening is a known feature, may allow the use of HRCT as a non-invasive marker of airway remodelling. We evaluated this relationship in children with DA. Methods 27 children (median age 10.5 [range 4.1–16.7] years) with DA, underwent endobronchial biopsy from the right lower lobe and HRCT less than 4 months apart. HRCTs were assessed for bronchial wall thickening (BWT) of the right lower lobe using semi-quantitative and quantitative scoring techniques. The semi-quantitative score (grade 0–4) was an overall assessment of BWT of all clearly identifiable airways in HRCT scans. The quantitative score (BWT %; defined as [airway outer diameter – airway lumen diameter]/airway outer diameter ×100) was the average score of all airways visible and calculated using electronic endpoint callipers. RBM thickness in endobronchial biopsies was measured using image analysis. 23/27 subjects performed spirometry and the relationships between RBM thickness and BWT with airflow obstruction evaluated. Results Median RBM thickness in endobronchial biopsies was 6.7(range 4.6 – 10.0) μm. Median qualitative score for BWT of the right lower lobe was 1(range 0 – 1.5) and quantitative score was 54.3 (range 48.2 – 65.6)%. There was no relationship between RBM thickness and BWT in the right lower lobe using either scoring technique. No relationship was found between FEV1 and BWT or RBM thickness. Conclusion Although a relationship between RBM thickness and BWT on HRCT has been found in adults with asthma, this relationship does not appear to hold true in children with DA.

9. Surface behaviour for materials processing

Abstract

The surface behaviour of minerals containing rare earth elements was investigated using zeta potential measurements. The rare earth fluorcarbonate mineral, parisite and a rare earth enriched phosphate mineral, apatite were measured under water and collector aqueous conditions, which are similar to those found under froth flotation. Firstly, the iso electric point of parisite was measured at pH 5.6 in water, this is within the range of reported IEP values of another rare earth fluorcarbonate mineral, bastnäsite. Bastnäsite currently sources over half of the world's rare earth elements and has well studied surface behaviour. The surface behaviour of parisite under collector and supernatant conditions was similar to bastnäsite, indicating that parisite could be processed using the same froth flotation regimes as bastnäsite. Secondly, the iso electric point of rare earth enriched apatite was measured at pH 3.8, which is consistent with the values of apatite non-rare earth enriched apatite in the literature. The surface behaviour of non-rare earth enriched apatite from the literature and the enriched apatite measured here is similar under common reagent conditions. This suggests apatite processing could be applied to rare earth enriched apatite deposits. The first evidence of nanobubbles at the surface of the carbonate mineral, dolomite and rare earth fluorcarbonate mineral, synchysite were also reported. The nanobubbles were measured using non-contact atomic force microscopy, and produced using the gas oversaturation method of heating the liquid. Nanobubble density on dolomite was increased by collector conditions with 0.656 bubbles per µm2, compared to 0.342 nanobubbles per µm2 under water conditions. Investigating the contact angle of the nanobubbles on dolomite indicated that the reagents effected the pinning of the nanobubbles and not their surface tension. Nanobubbles on the synchysite sample in collector conditions had an average contact angle of 24 degrees, in line with previous studies. The presence of nanobubbles on synchysite under collector conditions demonstrates that the surface is hydrophobic. Finally, nanobubbles at the surface of patterned and unpatterned chemical vapour deposition monolayer graphene were investigated. High-speed atomic force microscopy was used to image nanobubbles produced using solvent exchange. Nanobubbles were found on patterned graphene, not on the underlying SiO2 substrate. This links to the increased hydrophobicity of graphene compared to SiO2. The patterning of the graphene reduced the nanobubbles' lateral size and increased the contact angle, consistent with previous results of nanobubbles on patterning. These are the first reported results of nanobubbles constrained by chemically patterned graphene.

Abstract

OSIRIS-REx will return pristine samples of carbonaceous asteroid Bennu. This article describes how pristine was defined based on expectations of Bennu and on a realistic understanding of what is achievable with a constrained schedule and budget, and how that definition flowed to requirements and implementation. To return a pristine sample, the OSIRIS- REx spacecraft sampling hardware was maintained at level 100 A/2 and <180 ng/cm2 of amino acids and hydrazine on the sampler head through precision cleaning, control of materials, and vigilance. Contamination is further characterized via witness material exposed to the spacecraft assembly and testing environment as well as in space. This characterization provided knowledge of the expected background and will be used in conjunction with archived spacecraft components for comparison with the samples when they are delivered to Earth for analysis. Abstract

INTRODUCTION: In the 330-patient ADVOCATE trial of avacopan for the treatment of antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, in which 81% of patients had renal involvement, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) increased on average 7.3 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) in the avacopan group and 4.1 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) in the prednisone group (P = 0.029) at week 52. This new analysis examines the results in the patient subgroup with severe renal insufficiency at enrollment into the trial, i.e., eGFR ≤20 ml/min per 1.73 m(2). METHODS: eGFR was determined at baseline and over the course of the trial. Changes in eGFR were compared between the 2 treatment groups. RESULTS: In ADVOCATE, 27 of 166 patients (16%) in the avacopan group and 23 of 164 patients (14%) in the prednisone group had a baseline eGFR ≤20 ml/min per 1.73 m(2). At week 52, eGFR increased on average 16.1 and 7.7 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) in the avacopan and prednisone groups, respectively (P = 0.003). The last eGFR value measured during the 52-week treatment period was ≥2-fold higher than baseline in 41% of patients in the avacopan group compared to 13% in the prednisone group (P = 0.030). More patients in the avacopan group versus prednisone group had increases in eGFR above 20, 30, and 45 ml/min per 1.73 m(2), respectively. Serious adverse events occurred in 13 of 27 patients (48%) in the avacopan group and 16 of 23 patients (70%) in the prednisone group. CONCLUSION: Among patients with baseline eGFR ≤20 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) in the ADVOCATE trial, eGFR improved more in the avacopan group than in the prednisone group.

Conclusion: Among patients with baseline eGFR ≤20 ml/min per 1.73 m2 in the ADVOCATE trial, eGFR improved more in the avacopan group than in the prednisone group.

Abstract

Background: Shortages and unequal access to anticancer medicines for children and adolescents are a reality in Europe. The aim of the European Society for Paediatric Oncology (SIOPE) Essential Anticancer Medicines Project was to provide a list of anticancer medicines that are considered essential in the treatment of paediatric cancers to help ensure their continuous access to all children and adolescents with cancer across Europe. Methods: This pan-European project, done between Jan 20, 2020, and Feb 18, 2022, was designed to be a systematic collection and review of treatment protocols and strategies that are used to treat childhood cancer in Europe. We formed 16 working groups on the basis of paediatric cancer types, and which were based on the existing SIOPE Clinical Trial Groups. Workings groups consisted of representatives from the SIOPE Clinical Trial Groups, Young SIOPE members, and senior paediatric oncology experts. Each group collected existing treatment protocols that are used to treat the respective cancer types in Europe. Medicines from the standard group of each protocol were extracted. For medicines not on the WHO Essential Medicines List for children (EMLc) 2017, working groups did a literature search to determine whether the medicines should be defined as essential, promising, or neither essential nor promising. Each group provided an individual summary, and all medicines that were considered essential by at least one group were combined in a joint list. Findings: The working groups identified 73 treatment protocols used in Europe and defined 66 medicines as essential. For several newer medicines, such as kinase inhibitors or tisagenlecleucel, the supporting evidence was insufficient to consider them essential, so these medicines were defined as promising. 25 medicines were considered promising by at least one working group. 22 (33%) of the 66 essential and none of the promising medicines were included in the WHO EMLc 2017. Abstract

OSIRIS-REx will return pristine samples of carbonaceous asteroid Bennu. This manuscript describes how pristine was defined based on expectations of Bennu and on a realistic understanding of what is achievable with a constrained schedule and budget, and how that definition flowed to requirements and implementation. To return a pristine sample, the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft sampling hardware was maintained at Level 100 A/2 and less than 180 nanograms per square centimeter of amino acids and hydrazine on the sampler head through precision cleaning, control of materials, and vigilance. Contamination is further characterized via witness material exposed to the spacecraft assembly and testing environment as well as in space. This characterization provided knowledge of the expected background and will be used in conjunction with archived spacecraft components for comparison with the samples when they are delivered to Earth for analysis. Most of all, the cleanliness of the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft was achieved through communication between scientists, engineers, managers, and technicians.

Abstract

Aims To investigate the psychological care provided to children and young adolescents with cancer and their families within the National Children's Cancer Service (NCCS), Ireland, in respect of the national and international standards of care. Methods A retrospective audit of 316 referrals made over 32 months by the NCCS to the psychology service in malignant haematology and oncology was performed. Results The audit revealed that out of 316 patients, a yearly average of 189 (50%) of urgently referred patients received psychological support within the NCCS between January 2013 and August 2016. Furthermore only 20 (22%) undergoing haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), 14 (22%) referred to the paediatric palliative care team, and 84 (62%) of teenage patients received psychological input during this timeframe. Conclusion The audit revealed that the current psychology service provision is failing to meet the international standards of care. Due to the data provided by this audit, in conjunction with a clinical risk assessment of the service, funds for the post of principal psychologist have been secured. Further psychology posts (HSCT, late-effects and neuropsychology), and development of the psycho-oncology model of care are required to ensure equality of access and evidence-based psychological care for all children with cancer.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The C5a receptor inhibitor avacopan is being studied for the treatment of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis.METHODS: In this randomized, controlled trial, we assigned patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis in a 1:1 ratio to receive oral avacopan at a dose of 30 mg twice daily or oral prednisone on a tapering schedule. All the patients received either cyclophosphamide (followed by azathioprine) or rituximab. The first primary end point was remission, defined as a Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score (BVAS) of 0 (on a scale from 0 to 63, with higher scores indicating greater disease activity) at week 26 and no glucocorticoid use in the previous 4 weeks. The second primary end point was sustained remission, defined as remission at both weeks 26 and 52. Both end points were tested for noninferiority (by a margin of 20 percentage points) and for superiority.RESULTS: A total of 331 patients underwent randomization; 166 were assigned to receive avacopan, and 165 were assigned to receive prednisone. The mean BVAS at baseline was 16 in both groups. Remission at week 26 (the first primary end point) was observed in 120 of 166 patients (72.3%) receiving avacopan and in 115 of 164 patients (70.1%) receiving prednisone (estimated common difference, 3.4 percentage points; 95% confidence interval [CI], -6.0 to 12.8; PCONCLUSIONS: In this trial involving patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis, avacopan was noninferior but not superior to prednisone taper with respect to remission at week 26 and was superior to prednisone taper with respect to sustained remission at week 52. All the patients received cyclophosphamide or rituximab. The safety and clinical effects of avacopan beyond 52 weeks were not addressed in the trial.
