6. Grapes.

Abstract

Grape is a major crop worldwide in which production is primarily driven by the ability to grow high-quality fruit. Breeding objectives vary by region and market class of grape, but many programs seek to combine high quality fruit with improved disease resistance and environmental adaptation, or to continue advances in quality attributes. Grapevines are predominantly a grafted crop, making grape rootstocks, and rootstock breeding, vitally important in the growth of the global viticulture industry. There are vast germplasm resources available within the genus Vitis, but worldwide production is dominated by cultivars of one species, V. vinifera. Species other than V. vinifera are of significant interest as useful sources of desirable traits in many modern breeding programs. Little is known concerning the genetic control of most traits in grape beyond the fact that many are quantitatively controlled. Substantial international effort has occurred in the development of molecular genetic and genomic resources for grape. Many tools are now in place to identify the causal genes underlying important traits and to better understand the allelic diversity that exists in important genes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A transformation model of engineering education at the undergraduate level is constructed to define the human and technical resources that contribute to the production of a university-trained engineer. The theory of technical systems is applied in the development of the model to transform a graduating pre-university pupil into a university-trained engineer. Two co-aligned themes are identified as the executive system and the execution system, which dictate who and what will do the work and how the work will be completed, respectively. The model is an extension of an existing model and further depicts the duality of the pre-university pupil as an operator and as the operand as related to engineering education. Consequently, the proposed model details the student perspective from the bottom-up in an implicit manner and the top-down perspective from administrators and professors in an explicit manner. The model's utility is in providing a means by which to coordinate efforts of pre-college and university-level educational sectors in the production of entry-level engineers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

8. Location of Seven Post-translational Modifications in Rabbit Elongation Factor 1α Including Dimethyllysine, Trimethyllysine, and Glycerylphosphorylethanolamine*

Abstract

Amino acid sequencing of a large number of chemical and enzymatic cleavage products of elongation factor 1α purified from rabbit reticulocyte has identified seven post-translationally modified residues. Five of the modifications are methylations of lysine residues yielding dimethyllysine at residues 55 and 165 and trimethyllysine at residues 36, 79, and 318. The two remaining post-translational modifications involve the addition of ethanolamine to glutamic acid residues 301 and 374, as reported previously (Rosenberry, T. L., Krall, J. A., Dever, T. E., Haas, R., Louvard, D., and Merrick, W. C. (1989) J. Biol. Chem. 264, 7096-7099). Fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry and fast atom bombardment tandem mass spectrometry have been used to analyze peptides containing these modified residues. The analyses have determined that glycerylphosphorylethanolamine has been attached to the glutamic acid residues. An analysis of the amino acid sequence surrounding each of the three types of modification has indicated no similarities. Therefore, it seems likely that the modifying enzymes do not recognize a specific amino acid sequence but rather the three-dimensional presentation of either amino or carboxyl residues in the elongation factor 1α structure.
