Significant research exists exploring barriers preventing college attainment for this population; however, there is limited research recommending targeted interventions in formative years to prepare first-generation students for college life. School counselors play a critical role in helping to bridge this gap by focusing on social-emotional learning.

Abstract

To understand how ectotherms will respond to warming temperatures, we require information on thermal habitat quality at spatial resolutions and extents relevant to the organism. Measuring thermal habitat quality is either limited to small spatial extents, such as with ground‐based 3D operative temperature (Te) replicas, representing the temperature of the animal at equilibrium with its environment, or is based on microclimate derived from physical models that use land cover variables and downscale coarse climate data. We draw on aspects of both these approaches and test the ability of unoccupied aerial vehicle (UAV) data (optical RGB) to predict fine‐scale heterogeneity in sub‐canopy lizard (Anolis bicaorum) Te in tropical forest using random forest models. Anolis bicaorum is an endemic, critically endangered, species, facing significant threats of habitat loss and degradation, and work was conducted as part of a larger project. Our findings indicate that a model incorporating solely air temperature, measured at the centre of the 20 × 20 m plot, and ground‐based leaf area index (LAI) measurements, measured at directly above the 3D replica, predicted Te well. However, a model with air temperature and UAV‐derived canopy metrics performed slightly better with the added advantage of enabling the mapping of Te with continuous spatial extent at high spatial resolutions, across the whole of the UAV orthomosaic, allowing us to capture and map Te across the whole of the survey plot, rather than purely at 3D replica locations. Our work provides a feasible workflow to map sub‐canopy lizard Te in tropical environments at spatial scales relevant to the organism, and across continuous areas. This can be applied to other species and can represent species within the same community that have evolved a similar thermal niche. 9. Exploring the interrelationship between anxiety, interpretation bias and parenting factors in military families

Abstract

Theoretical frameworks suggest that increased anxiety symptoms are associated with a cognitive interpretation bias; anxious individuals are more likely to interpret ambiguous information as threatening and dangerous. Several models have considered the role of parents and parenting in the aetiology of cognitive biases that place children at increased risk for the development of anxiety. For example, parenting characterised by overprotection/emotional overinvolvement and over control has been associated with anxiety disorders in children. The present research explored the association between parent and child anxiety, interpretation biases and parent-child relationships within military families, a population at greater risk of experiencing enduring anxiety. Twenty children aged 8-11 years and their mothers reported their anxiety symptoms and completed a homophone task. Words could be interpreted as either threatening or non-threatening and were categorised into separation and general threat themes. Parents also completed the Five Minute Speech Sample, where they expressed thoughts and feelings about their child. Results revealed that parent and child anxiety was significantly positively correlated as expected. Children’s anxious cognitions were significantly positively correlated to self-reported and maternal anxiety (ps < .05). In contrast to the expected hypothesis, children and parent interpretation biases were not significantly correlated. Although the research set out to examine the extent to which interpretation biases could act as a mediator between parenting and child anxiety, evidence for a mediated pathway could not be established within the present research. The impact of these findings are discussed with particular reference to the importance of understanding the aetiology of anxiety and exploring the role of the intergenerational transmission of anxiety.

12. The Effect of Emphasizing Key Vocabulary on Student Achievement with English Learners

This action research seeks to determine the impact of teacher training and the use of specific instructional strategies, per the research-based SIOP® teaching model, on English language arts achievement of formally identified first grade English Learners. The study aims to discover if using strategic techniques to teach vocabulary positively affects language acquisition and comprehension. English Learners have historically lagged behind grade level peers in all academic areas. English Learners tend to have many outside variables that can affect their ability to focus on school. Issues with immigration, class, culture, and race are all relevant topics with this population. This study discusses many of these issues present both in and outside of the classroom. The action research involved a series of professional development sessions, organized and implemented by a certified SIOP® coach, in this case the action researcher, which included specific strategies on how to foster vocabulary acquisition. Through a series of non-evaluative observations and opportunities for reflection, teachers collaborated in order to refine their practices. Both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered to determine the effectiveness this model, knowing that it is limited in scope due to the sample size and the time parameters involved with this study. However, this study provided insight into best practices in supporting language instruction and suggested opportunities for additional research. The goal of this study was to determine if being strategic in how and what we teach English Learners fosters student engagement within their classroom community. The ultimate goal being that this knowledge can help level the playing field in terms of understanding and accessing grade level and beyond content so that these diverse learners can achieve academically. 13. Geological origins of sugarloaf mountains in eastern Brazil and their environmental significance as refugia for the Mata Atlantica rainforest

Abstract

Sugarloaf mountains (inselbergs) are steep-sided, dome-shaped mountains often standing in isolation from the surrounding plains. Although principally recognised in Africa and Australia, the geological and geomorphological development of Brazilian sugarloaf mountains along the eastern Atlantic margin is poorly understood. The contemporaneous relationship of these landforms with the highly threatened Mata Atlantica rainforest, reduced to ~11% of its original distribution due to deforestation, provides a unique setting for multi-scale dynamic landscape research. This thesis determines the geological controls on sugarloaf mountain evolution, standardises geomorphometric inselberg landscape descriptors to improve the understanding of landform evolution through automated mapping retrieval, and assesses the environmental significance of these landscapes as refugia through measures of allometric biomass (AGB) across rainforest fragments in Pancas, eastern Brazil. Geological structural analyses reveal a five stage deformational history, with the granite gneiss sugarloaf basement encompassing both Neoproterozoic ductile shear and Cenozoic brittle extension. These structures, exploited during exhumation through the Eocene and Miocene, exert a strong control on the fragmentation of the plateau and morphology of the mountains revealing a “multi-stage etched” evolution of the current passive margin landscape. Geomorphological landscape analyses identify four novel types of sugarloaf morphometric classes: Summit, Slope, Collar, and Valley Floor. These features, defined by height, slope, minimum curvature and Topographic Profile Index in a Shuttle Radar Topography Mission dataset are used to develop an automated mapping program addressing issues in landscape feature extraction of extreme terrains, standardising descriptions of inselberg morphology and enabling evolutionary stages of inselberg landforms to be recognised. Measures of AGB across remnant forest fragments and analysis of their spatial distribution using Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission Reflectance (ASTER) imagery reveal that sugarloaf landscapes concentrate biomass in lowland topographic regions threatened by anthropogenic destruction. Therefore the environmental understanding of sugarloaves as refugia must be readdressed to inform future conservation efforts.

Abstract

Environmental problems have been increasingly seen as behavioral and cultural factors, not just technological and economic. What’s more, sociology is uniquely positioned to be a leader in the environmental conversation. This dissertation aims to contribute to the growing body of research on environmental sociology with the aim of understanding how people’s values may influence their climate actions. To identify and discern young people’s belief towards environmental issues, 14 in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with participants in the United States and China. The results of this exploratory study found six analytically distinctive themes on which Chinese and American participants diverge in terms of their values and behaviors towards climate change. Additionally, a seventh theme was discovered that underscores a unifying commonality where the two groups converge with regards to how they view and engage with climate matters. Os problemas ambientais têm sido cada vez mais encarados como fatores comportamentais e culturais, e não apenas tecnológicos e econômicos. Além do mais, a sociologia está posicionada de forma única para liderar na agenda ambiental. Esta dissertação visa contribuir para o crescente corpo de pesquisas em sociologia ambiental com o objetivo de compreender como os valores das pessoas influenciam suas ações climáticas. Para identificar e discernir as crenças dos jovens em relação às questões ambientais, foram realizadas 14 entrevistas qualitativas aprofundadas com jovens nos Estados Unidos e na China. Os resultados deste estudo exploratório encontraram seis - três para cada país - temas analiticamente distintos nos quais os participantes chineses e americanos divergem em termos de seus valores e comportamentos em relação às mudanças climáticas. Além disso, um sétimo tema destaca uma semelhança unificadora onde os dois grupos convergem no que diz respeito a como eles vêem e se envolvem com as questões climáticas.

Abstract

Climate change is recognized as a major public health threat. Health care services are major contributors to carbon emissions. Future doctors will make clinical decisions that have consequences for the environment. However, there is no research on the views of future doctors on climate change. In this focus group study with 24 current medical students we explored climate change and health, and the role of future doctors in responding to climate change. Not all students accepted the evidence for climate change although most were aware of the implications (if it were to occur) for health. Most students thought international agreements were needed to reduce carbon emissions. All students considered doctors to be influential in society, but there was no consensus on whether and how doctors should use this influence in relation to climate change.
