Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) are used to observe very high-energy photons from the ground. Gamma rays are indirectly detected through the Cherenkov light emitted by the air showers they induce. The new generation of experiments, in particular the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), sets ambitious goals for discoveries of new gamma-ray sources and precise measurements of the already discovered ones. To achieve these goals, both hardware and data analysis must employ cutting-edge techniques. This also applies to the LST-1, the first IACT built for the CTAO, which is currently taking data on the Canary island of La Palma. This paper introduces a new event reconstruction technique for IACT data, aiming to improve the image reconstruction quality and the discrimination between the signal and the background from misidentified hadrons and electrons. The technique models the development of the extensive air shower signal, recorded as a waveform per pixel, seen by CTAO telescopes' cameras. Model parameters are subsequently passed to random forest regressors and classifiers to extract information on the primary particle. The new reconstruction was applied to simulated data and to data from observations of the Crab Nebula performed by the LST-1. The event reconstruction method presented here shows promising performance improvements. The angular and energy resolution, and the sensitivity, are improved by 10 to 20% over most of the energy range. At low energy, improvements reach up to 22%, 47%, and 50%, respectively. Context: There are currently three pulsars firmly detected by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs), two of them reaching TeV energies, challenging models of very-high-energy (VHE) emission in pulsars. More precise observations are needed to better characterize pulsar emission at these energies. The LST-1 is the prototype of the Large-Sized Telescope, that will be part of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). Its improved performance over previous IACTs makes it well suited for studying pulsars. Aims: To study the Crab pulsar emission with the LST-1, improving and complementing the results from other telescopes. These observations can also be used to characterize the potential of the LST-1 to study other pulsars and detect new ones. Methods: We analyzed a total of $\sim$103 hours of gamma-ray observations of the Crab pulsar conducted with the LST-1 in the period from September 2020 to January 2023. The observations were carried out at zenith angles less than 50 degrees. A new analysis of the Fermi-LAT data was also performed, including $\sim$14 years of observations. Results: The Crab pulsar phaseogram, long-term light-curve, and phase-resolved spectra are reconstructed with the LST-1 from 20 GeV to 450 GeV for P1 and up to 700 GeV for P2. The pulsed emission is detected with a significance of 15.2$\sigma$. The two characteristic emission peaks of the Crab pulsar are clearly detected (>10$\sigma$), as well as the so-called bridge emission (5.7$\sigma$). We find that both peaks are well described by power laws, with spectral indices of $\sim$3.44 and $\sim$3.03 respectively. The joint analysis of Fermi-LAT and LST-1 data shows a good agreement between both instruments in the overlapping energy range. The SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f=8$ nearly massless Dirac fermions has long been of theoretical and phenomenological interest due to the near-conformality arising from its proximity to the conformal window. One particularly interesting feature is the emergence of a relatively light, stable flavor-singlet scalar meson $\sigma$ $(J^{PC}=0^{++})$ in contrast to the $N_f=2$ theory QCD. In this work, we study the finite-volume dependence of the $\sigma$ meson correlation function computed in lattice gauge theory and determine the $\sigma$ meson mass and decay constant extrapolated to the infinite-volume limit. Individualized treatment rules can lead to better health outcomes when patients have heterogeneous responses to treatment. Very few individualized treatment rule estimation methods are compatible with a multi-treatment observational study with right censored survival outcomes. In this paper we extend policy evaluation methods to the right censored data setting. Existing approaches either make restrictive assumptions about the structure of the data, or use inverse weighting methods that increase the variance of the estimator resulting in decreased performance. We propose a method which uses balanced policy evaluation combined with an imputation approach to remove right censoring. We show that the proposed imputation approach is compatible with a large number of existing survival models and can be used to extend any individualized treatment rule estimation method to the right censored data setting. We establish the rate at which the imputed values converge to the conditional expected survival times, as well as consistency guarantees and regret bounds for the combined balanced policy with imputation approach. In simulation studies, we demonstrate the improved performance of our approach compared to existing methods. We also apply our method to data from the University of North Carolina Center for AIDS Research HIV Clinical Cohort.

Driven-dissipative quantum many-body systems have attracted increasing interest in recent years as they lead to novel classes of quantum many-body phenomena. In particular, mean-field calculations predict limit cycle phases, slow oscillations instead of stationary states, in the long-time limit for a number of driven-dissipative quantum many-body systems. Using a cluster mean-field and a self-consistent Mori projector approach, we explore the persistence of such limit cycles as short range quantum correlations are taken into account in a driven-dissipative Heisenberg model., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

In quantum lattice systems with geometric frustration, particles cannot move coherently due to destructive interference between tunnelling processes. Here we show that purely local, Markovian dissipation can induce mobility and long-range first-order coherence in frustrated lattice systems that is entirely generated by incoherent processes. Interactions reduce the coherences and mobility but do not destroy them. These effects are observable in experimental implementations of driven-dissipative lattices with a flat band and non-uniform dissipation., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

The field of gamma-ray astronomy has seen important progress during the last decade, yet there exists so far no common software framework for the scientific analysis of gamma-ray telescope data. We propose to fill this gap by means of the GammaLib software, a generic library that we have developed to support the analysis of gamma-ray event data. GammaLib has been written in C++ and all functionality is available in Python through an extension module. On top of this framework we have developed the ctools software package, a suite of software tools that enables building of flexible workflows for the analysis of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescope event data. The ctools are inspired by science analysis software available for existing high-energy astronomy instruments, and they follow the modular ftools model developed by the High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center. The ctools have been written in Python and C++, and can be either used from the command line, via shell scripts, or directly from Python. In this paper we present the GammaLib and ctools software versions 1.0 that have been released end of 2015. GammaLib and ctools are ready for the science analysis of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescope event data, and also support the analysis of Fermi-LAT data and the exploitation of the COMPTEL legacy data archive. We report on an optimal single-electron charge qubit for a solid-state double quantum dot (DQD) system and analyse its dynamics under a time-dependent linear detuning, using GPU accelerated numerical solutions to the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. The optimal qubit is found to have basis states defined as the symmetric and antisymmetric linear combinations of the lowest energy bonding and anti-bonding states of the DQD at zero bias. In contrast to charge qubits defined by the two localised ground states of the uncoupled DQD, this choice of the basis causes the resulting dynamics to have a maximal overlap with an idealised two-state model. Our optimal qubit basis states are not localised to a single quantum dot and, as such, initialising the qubit requires a particular sequence of gate pulses to take the system from an initial fiducial state of the DQD to the logical $0$ or $1$. We determine this sequence using pulses that incorporate the expected experimental finite rise times. We also show how to perform arbitrary single qubit operations on the Bloch sphere using spin-echo type pulsing, allowing us to obtain any qubit state with at most two single pulses. We apply density functional theory, in the local density approximation, to a quasi-one-dimensional electron gas in order to quantify the effect of Coulomb and correlation effects in modulating, and therefore patterning, the charge density distribution. Our calculations are presented specifically for surface-gate-defined quasi-one-dimensional quantum wires in a GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructure but we expect our results to apply more generally for other low dimensional semiconductor systems. We show that at high densities with strong confinement, screening of electrons in the direction transverse to the wire is efficient and density modulations are not visible. In the low-density, weak-confinement regime, the exchange-correlation potential induces small density modulations as the electrons are depleted from the wire. At the weakest confinements and lowest densities, the electron density splits into two rows thereby forming a pair of quantum wires that lie beneath the surface gates. An additional double-well external potential forms at very low density which enhances this row splitting phenomenon. We produce phase diagrams that show a transition between the presence of a single quantum wire in a split-gate structure and two quantum wires. We suggest that this phenomenon can be used to pattern and modulate the electron density in low-dimensional structures with particular application to systems where a proximity effect from a surface gate would be valuable., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We report the experimental realisation of a versatile ring trap for ultracold atoms. The ring geometry is created by the time-averaged adiabatic potential resulting from the application of an oscillating magnetic bias field to a rf dressed quadrupole trap. Lifetimes for a Bose-Einstein condensate in the ring exceed 11s and the ring radius was continuously varied from 50$\mu$m to 261$\mu$m. An efficient method of loading the ring from a conventional TOP trap is presented together with a rotation scheme which introduces angular momentum into the system. The ring presents an opportunity to study the superfluid properties of a condensate in a multiply connected geometry and also has applications for matter-wave interferometry.
