The trilobite fauna of the upper Ordovician (middle Katian) Pyle Mountain Argillite comprises a mixture of abundant mesopelagic cyclopygids and other pelagic taxa and a benthic fauna dominated by trilobites lacking eyes. Such faunas were widespread in deep water environments around Gondwana and terranes derived from that continent throughout Ordovician time but this is the only known record of such a fauna from North America and thus from Laurentia. It probably reflects a major sea level rise (the ‘Linearis drowning events’) as does the development of coeval cyclopygid-dominated deep water trilobite faunas in terranes that were marginal to Laurentia and are now preserved in Ireland and Scotland. The Pyle Mountain Argillite trilobite fauna occurs with a deep water Foliomena brachiopod fauna and comprises 22 species. Pelagic trilobites (mostly cyclopygids) constitute 36% of the preserved sclerites, and 45% of the fauna is the remains of trilobites lacking eyes, including one new species, Dindymene whittingtoni sp. nov. Three species of cyclopygid are present, belonging in Cyclopyge, Symphysops and Microparia (Heterocyclopyge). Cyclopygids are widely thought to have been stratified in the water column in life and thus their taxonomic diversity reflects the relative depths of the sea-beds on which their remains accumulated. A tabulation of middle and upper Katian cyclopygid-bearing faunas from several palaeoplates and terranes arranged on the basis of increasing numbers of cyclopygid genera allows an assessment of the relative depth ranges of the associated benthic taxa. The Pyle Mountain Argillite fauna lies towards the deeper end of this depth spectrum.

The calcite eyes of trilobites have been studied for over 100 years using methods including light microscopy (e.g. Clarke 1889; Campbell 1975; Towe 1973; Clarkson 1979 and Bruton and Haas 2003) and more recently cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging coupled with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of samples etched in EDTA (Miller and Clarkson 1980). This work has provided a great deal of information on the mechanisms by which lenses collected light, drawing attention to the importance of the crystallographic orientation of lens calcite for focusing, and leading to sophisticated models of trilobite vision (Clarkson and Levi-Setti, 1975; Gál et al., 2000). The morphology and mode of life of phacopids, in particular Geesops, are well understood (Bruton and Haas, 2003a; 2003b) but observations on the internal structure of their lenses contradict the generally accepted models for image formation by schizochroal eyes. Recent technological advances have given new impetus to the analysis of crystalline materials and especially important has been electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). This is a SEM-based technique that can be used to accurately ‘map’ variations in the crystallographic orientation of a sample down to the sub-micrometre scale by recording on a sensitive camera Kikuchi patterns that are formed by diffraction of an electron beam when focused on a polished sample tilted at 70°. Although this technique has been understood for over 50 years (Alam et al., 1954) and has been extensively used in disciplines such as metallography (Humphreys, 2001), until recently its Earth Science applications were limited to studies of structural geology and petrology (Nuchter and Stockhert, 2007). Recent applications of EBSD to biomineralisation research (Dalbeck and Cusack, 2006; Griesshaber et al., 2007) have mapped the crystal orientation and microstructure of calcite shells and in 2006 Lee et al. were able to apply this technique to investigating the microstructure of lenses in the schizochroal eye of Dalmanites. This paper describes results of an EBSD study of eyes of Geesops schlotheimi (Bronn, 1825) combined with more traditional microscopy techniques to reveal new aspects of trilobite lens structure.

A stratigraphically constrained re-evaluation of terrane amalgamation in the Caledonides of northern Britain allows the development of a new orogenic scenario which accounts for many of the outstanding problems in the paratectonic Caledonides and includes a new terrane template which correlates well with that proposed for Newfoundland. The Arenig Grampian Orogeny resulted from the accretion of two arc terranes to Laurentia: the Midland Valley (=Notre Dame Arc in Newfoundland) and a terrane of probable Avalonian/Gondwanan origin, here termed 'Novantia' (= Annieopsquotch Accretionary Tract (partim)), now hidden beneath the Southern Uplands allochthon. The Tyrone and Ballantrae ophiolites mark the northern boundary of Novantia within the composite Midland Valley Terrane. The Popelogan-Victoria Arc-Grangegeeth Terrane accreted to the amalgamated Midland Valley Terrane during the late Ordovician and initiated the Southern Uplands thrust duplex. A brief period of northward subduction during the Silurian followed, is ascribed to the northerly drift of the amalgamated Avalon-Baltica plate, and a final Wenlock (Scandian) collision and caused underplating of the Midland Valley Terrane. Caledonian deformation had ceased by the Emsian, the age of the undeformed Cheviot lavas that overlie the uplifted and peneplaned Southern Uplands.

In the southern part of the Scottish Midland Valley Lower Old Red Sandstone sedimentary and volcanic strata of the Lanark Group unconformably overlie inliers of largely marine Silurian rocks. The oldest of the four formations of the Lanark Group is the Greywacke Conglomerate Formation which contains clasts predominantly of greywacke, with subordinate volcanic rocks, cherts and limestones. The greywackes are known to have been derived from a cryptic source which lay to the south and east of the Midland Valley. Contrary to earlier, Silurian, age assessments of limestone clasts from the Greywacke Conglomerate Formation of the Pentland Hills, a conodont faunule described herein belongs in the uppermost Llanvirn to lower Caradoc P. anserinus Biozone. There are no Ordovician rocks exposed within the Pentland Hills inlier, and thus our new age data suggest that along with the other clasts, the limestones in the Greywacke Conglomerate are exotic to the Pentlands Sub-basin. The source area had a cover succession that included mid-Ordovician shallow marine carbonate and flysch.

Caradoc and Ashgill radiolarian cherts and siliceous mudstones from the Southern Uplands preserve primary rare earth element (REE) signatures which are comparable to those of more recent deposits from continental margin settings. This is incompatible with the widely held view of these rocks as open ocean deposits incorporated in an accretionary prism and reinforces the model of deposition on an extensional continental margin. The REE signatures can be used as fingerprints to differentiate between some of the fault-bounded formations within the area. They indicate the provenance of the mud grade siliciclastic material in these distal hemipelagites and are comparable with published REE data on greywackes in the same successions. This detailed analysis of the REE patterns in Lower Palaeozoic cherts demonstrates the usefulness of this approach in ancient orogens.

Rare earth element (REE) data from low to mid-Arenig cherts are used to test competing models for the early Ordovician evolution of the Laurentian margin in the northern British Isles. Cherts from the Ballantrae Ophiolite Complex have chondrite-normalized REE patterns typical of continental margin settings with LREE enrichment, a slight negative Eu(anom) and shale and chondrite-normalized La/Yb values of 0.97-1.41 and 7.78-11.4 respectively. This pattern, together with a large positive chondrite-normalized Ce(anom) (1.44-1.70), is virtually identical to that found in radiolarian chert of the Gascoyne Abyssal Plain, in the Timor Sea. Cherts from the Raven Gill Formation within the Leadhills Imbricate Zone, Northern Belt, Southern Uplands have typical continental margin REE patterns, chondrite-normalized Ce(anom) (0.9-1.21) and Eu(anom) (0.61-0.79) values indicating that they formed closer to the continental margin than those from Ballantrae. Shale and chondrite-normalized and La/Yb values of 0.95-1.27 and 4.92-13.88 respectively confirm this interpretation. It is concluded that the Ballantrae ophiolite formed in a rifted-arc basin above a northwards dipping, intra-oceanic subduction zone. The modest depth of burial of the Raven Gill Formation precludes it being part of a marginal basin which was subsequently trapped as the Ballantrae Ophiolite was obducted in the late Arenig. The Arenig rocks of the Leadhills Imbricate Zone represent an allochthonous terrane accreted to the western extension of the Midland Valley in Ireland in pre-Caradoc times. Here it formed the basement to the Southern Uplands basin. Palaeontological evidence places this basin adjacent to Pomeroy, Co. Tyrone in the early Caradoc. Sinistral strike-slip faulting, from the late Ashgill transported the Southern Uplands Terrance to its present location, a distance of less than 250 km.
