Search

We present a new, fully consistent framework for describing GeV-scale axion-like particles (ALPs) coupled to gluons. Unlike previous approaches, which either rely on pure chiral perturbation theory or introduce scheme-dependent parameters, our treatment simultaneously (i) enforces invariance under unphysical chiral rotations used to remove the ALP-gluon coupling, and (ii) incorporates heavier resonances relevant at the GeV scale. This construction enables robust matching between exclusive and perturbative descriptions of ALP decays, and reveals that commonly used descriptions can underestimate or overestimate ALP decay widths and production rates by orders of magnitude. We further show that the production of ALPs at proton accelerator experiments can incur large theoretical uncertainties, significantly impacting ALP event yields at past and future Lifetime Frontier experiments., Comment: 5+5 pages

e investigate the cosmological impact of hypothetical unstable new physics particles that decay in the MeV-scale plasma of the Early Universe. Focusing on scenarios where the decays produce metastable species such as muons, pions, and kaons, we systematically analyze the dynamics of these particles using coupled Boltzmann equations governing their abundances. Our results demonstrate that the metastable species can efficiently annihilate or interact with nucleons, which often leads to their disappearance prior to decay. The suppression of decay significantly alters the properties of cosmic neutrinos, impacting cosmological observables like Big Bang nucleosynthesis and the Cosmic Microwave Background. We investigate decays of hypothetical unstable new physics particles into metastable species such as muons, pions, or kaons in the early Universe, when temperatures are in the MeV range, and study how they affect cosmic neutrinos. We demonstrate that decays of the metastable particles compete with their annihilations and interactions with nucleons, which reduces the production of high-energy neutrinos and increases energy injection into the electromagnetic sector. This energy reallocation alters the impact of the new physics particles on the effective number of neutrino degrees of freedom, $N_{\text{eff}}$, modifies neutrino spectral distortions, and may induce asymmetries in neutrino and antineutrino energy distributions. These modifications have important implications for observables such as Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and the Cosmic Microwave Background, especially in light of upcoming CMB observations aiming to reach percent-level precision on $N_{\rm eff}$. Understanding how hypothetical new physics influences primordial neutrinos is essential in light of interpreting past and ongoing CMB observations. To reach this goal, we present a novel approach to solving the neutrino Boltzmann equation in the Early Universe. It overcomes the limitations of existing methods by providing a model-independent, computationally efficient, and accurate framework capable of handling complex interactions and non-equilibrium neutrino distributions. We demonstrate its comprehensive applicability through several case studies. In particular, we resolve the existing discrepancy between state-of-the-art approaches regarding the dynamics of the number of ultrarelativistic degrees of freedom in the presence of injections of high-energy neutrinos.

A systematic and unified analysis of the capability of lifetime frontier experiments to probe the parameter space of hypothetical long-lived particles is crucial for defining the targets of future searches. However, such a comprehensive study has not yet been conducted for dark photons - hypothetical massive particles that kinetically mix with Standard Model photons. Existing studies often rely on outdated assumptions about dark photon phenomenology, leading to inaccurate calculations of the parameter space, including regions already excluded or relevant for future experiments. In this paper, we present a comprehensive calculation of the parameter space for GeV-scale dark photons and light dark matter accessible to lifetime frontier experiments. Our analysis highlights how theoretical uncertainties in dark photon phenomenology can significantly impact experimental sensitivity across coupling and mass parameters. Cosmological observations from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) offer crucial insights into the Early Universe, enabling us to trace its evolution back to lifetimes as short as 0.01 seconds. Upcoming CMB spectrum measurements, such as those underway at the Simons Observatory, will achieve unprecedented precision, allowing for more accurate extraction of information about the properties of the primordial plasma and, in particular, primordial neutrinos. This provides an opportunity to test whether these properties align with the predictions of the standard cosmological model or indicate the presence of new physics that influenced the evolution of the MeV-temperature plasma. A key component in understanding how new physics may have affected primordial neutrinos is solving the neutrino Boltzmann equation. In this paper, we present a novel approach to solving this equation that offers model independence, transparency, and computational efficiency - features that current state-of-the-art methods lack. Models of inelastic (or pseudo-Dirac) dark matter commonly assume an accidental symmetry between the left-handed and right-handed mass terms in order to suppress diagonal couplings. We point out that this symmetry is unnecessary, because for Majorana fermions the diagonal couplings are not strongly constrained. Removing the requirement of such an ad-hoc symmetry instead relaxes the relic density constraint due to additional annihilation modes. We consider a simple UV-complete model realising this setup and study constraints from (in)direct detection, beam dump experiments and colliders. We identify two viable mass regions for the dark matter mass, around a few hundred MeV and around a few GeV, respectively. The former region will be fully tested by near-future analyses of NA64 and Belle II data, while the latter turns out to be challenging to explore even with future experiments., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, appendices

Beam dump experiments proposed at the SPS are perfectly suited to explore the parameter space of models with long-lived particles, thanks to the combination of a large intensity with a high proton beam energy. In this paper, we study how the exploration power may be augmented further by installing a detector based on liquid argon time projection chamber technology. For years, it has been believed that the main LHC detectors can only restrictively play the role of a lifetime frontier experiment exploring the parameter space of long-lived particles (LLPs) - hypothetical particles with tiny couplings to the Standard Model. This paper demonstrates that the LHCb experiment may become a powerful lifetime frontier experiment if it uses the new Downstream algorithm reconstructing tracks that do not let hits in the LHCb vertex tracker. The increasing interest in Long-Lived Particles (LLPs) has led to numerous proposed experiments in order to search for them. However, the sensitivity estimates published by these experiments tend to rely on disparate assumptions. To ensure an accurate comparison of their potential to find LLPs, a unified estimation of their sensitivity is therefore required. Axion-like particles (ALPs) emerge in many extensions of the Standard Model as pseudo-Goldstone bosons of a spontaneously broken global symmetry. Understanding their phenomenology in high-energy collisions is crucial for optimizing experimental searches and understanding the exploration potential of future experiments. In this paper, we revise the phenomenology of ALPs with universal couplings to fermions. In particular, we analyze the hierarchy and uncertainty of the various ALP production channels depending on the proton collision energy and the placement of the experiment, and provide improved calculations of the hadronic decay modes., Comment: v3: journal version

The rare decays $B^+\to K^+ \mu\bar \mu$ and $B^0\to K^{*0} \mu\bar\mu$ provide the strongest constraints on the mixing of a light scalar with the Higgs boson for GeV-scale masses. The constraints sensitively depend on the branching ratio to muons. Additional decay channels like an invisible partial width may substantially weaken the constraints. This scenario will be probed at Belle II in $B\to K^{(*)} + \mathrm{inv}$. We illustrate the complementarity of scalar decays to muons and invisible decays using the currently available results of LHCb and BaBar. We provide two simple model realisations providing a sizeable invisible scalar width, one based on a real scalar and one based on a $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge symmetry. Future searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model are without doubt in need of a diverse approach and experiments with complementary sensitivities to different types of classes of models. One of the directions that should be explored is feebly interacting particles (FIPs) with masses below the electroweak scale. The interest in FIPs has significantly increased in the last ten years. Searches for FIPs at colliders have intrinsic limitations in the region they may probe, significantly restricting exploration of the mass range $m_{\text{FIP}} < 5-10$\,GeV/c$^2$. Beam dump-like experiments, characterized by the possibility of extremely high luminosity at relatively high energies and the effective coverage of the production and decay acceptance, are the perfect option to generically explore the ``coupling frontier'' of the light FIPs. Several proposals for beam-dump detectors are currently being considered by CERN for implementation at the SPS ECN3 beam facility. In this we paper we analyse in depth how the characteristic geometric parameters of a beam dump experiment influence the signal yield. We apply an inclusive approach by considering the phenomenology of different types of FIPs. From the various production modes and kinematics, we demonstrate that the optimal layout that maximises the production and decay acceptance consists of a detector located on the beam-axis, at the shortest possible distance from the target defined by the systems required to suppress the beam-induced backgrounds., Comment: v2: matches the version accepted by EPJC

In this paper, we study the potential of future colliders to explore the parameter space of heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) through the dipole portal. We consider hadron colliders such as the LHC in the high luminosity phase and FCC-hh, and lepton colliders, such as FCC-ee. We consider various signatures for the HNLs, including the missing energy signature and displaced decays, and discuss the complementarity between the hadron and lepton colliders. In particular, we find that thanks to a much clearer environment, FCC-ee may search for the HNLs with masses up to $\simeq 30\text{ GeV}$ and proper lifetimes $c\tau_{N}\gtrsim 1\text{ cm}$, which is well beyond the reach of the experiments to be launched in the next decade., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, the published version with more discussion

We estimate the sensitivity of the DUNE experiment to new physics particles interacting with neutrinos, considering the dipole portal to heavy neutral leptons and a neutrinophilic scalar with lepton-number $2$ as examples. We demonstrate that neutrinos from the high-energy tail of the DUNE flux, with energies $E_{\nu}\gtrsim 5-10\text{ GeV}$, may significantly improve the sensitivity to these models, allowing to search for particles as heavy as $\simeq 10\text{ GeV}$. We also study the impact of the so-called tau-optimized neutrino beam configuration, which slightly improves sensitivity to the new physics models considered here. We analyze the potential of the recently proposed experiment FACET (Forward-Aperture CMS ExTension) to search for new physics. As an example, we consider the models of Higgs-like scalars with cubic and quartic interactions and Heavy Neutral Leptons. We compare the sensitivity of FACET with that of other proposed "intensity frontier" experiments, including FASER2, SHiP, etc. and demonstrate that FACET could probe an interesting parameter space between the current constraints and the potential reach of the above mentioned proposals.

The Future Circular Collider (FCC-hh) is a proposed successor of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). FCC-hh would push both the energy and intensity frontiers of searches for new physics particles. In particular, due to higher energy and luminosity than at the LHC, at FCC-hh there would be produced around $\simeq\!30$ times larger amount of $B$ mesons and $\simeq 120$ times of $W$ bosons, which then may decay into feebly interacting particles. The existence of non-zero neutrino masses points to the likely existence of multiple SM neutral fermions. When such states are heavy enough that they cannot be produced in oscillations, they are referred to as Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs). In this white paper we discuss the present experimental status of HNLs including colliders, beta decay, accelerators, as well as astrophysical and cosmological impacts. High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe Standard Model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. We re-analyze the results of the searches for Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs) by the CHARM experiment. We study HNL decay channel $N\to e^{+}e^{-}\nu/\mu^{+}\mu^{-}\nu$ and show that, in addition to the constraints on the HNL's mixings with $\nu_e$ or $\nu_{\mu}$, the same data also implies limits on the HNLs that mix only with $\nu_{\tau}$ and have masses in the range $380 \text{ MeV}

SND@LHC is an approved experiment equipped to detect scattering of neutrinos produced in the far-forward direction at the LHC, and aimed to measure their properties. In addition, the detector has a potential to search for new feebly interacting particles (FIPs) that may be produced in proton-proton collisions. In this paper, we discuss FIPs signatures at SND@LHC considering two classes of particles: stable FIPs that may be detected via their scattering, and unstable FIPs that decay inside the detector. We estimate the sensitivity of SND@LHC to probe scattering of leptophobic dark matter, and to detect decays of neutrino, scalar, and vector portal particles. Finally, we also compare and qualitatively analyze the potential of SND@LHC and FASER/FASER{\nu} experiments for these searches., Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures

The existence of feebly interacting massive particles (FIMPs) could have significant implications on the effective number of relativistic species $N_\mathrm{eff}$ in the early Universe. In this work, we investigate in detail how short-lived FIMPs that can decay into neutrinos affect $N_\mathrm{eff}$ and highlight the relevant effects that govern its evolution. We show that even if unstable FIMPs inject most of their energy into neutrinos, they may still decrease $N_{\mathrm{eff}}$, and identify neutrino spectral distortions as the driving power behind this effect. As a case study, we consider Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs) and indicate which regions of their parameter space increase or decrease $N_{\mathrm{eff}}$. We constrain the lifetime of thermally produced Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs) from primordial nucleosynthesis. We show that even a small fraction of mesons present in the primordial plasma leads to the over-production of the primordial helium. This puts an upper bound on the lifetime of HNLs $\tau_{N}<0.02$ s for masses $m_{N}>m_{\pi}$ (as compared to 0.1 s reported previously). In combination with accelerator searches, this allows us to put a new lower bound on the HNLs masses and defining the "bottom line" for HNL searches at the future Intensity Frontier experiments., Comment: Journal version

The most general renormalizable interaction between the Higgs sector and a new gauge-singlet scalar $S$ is governed by two interaction terms: cubic and quartic. The quartic interaction is only loosely constrained by invisible Higgs decays. Given current experimental limits about $10\%$ of all Higgs bosons created at the LHC can be converted to new scalars with the mass up to $m_{\rm Higgs}/2$. This can significantly extend the reach of the LHC-based Intensity Frontier experiments. We analyze the sensitivity of the FASER experiment to this model and discuss modest changes in the FASER 2 design that would allow to explore an orders-of-magnitude wider part of the Higgs portal's parameter space., Comment: Journal version

We review and revise the phenomenology of the scalar portal -- a new scalar particle with the mass in GeV range that mixes with the Higgs boson. In particular, we consider production channels $B\to S K_1(1270)$ and $B\to S K_0^*(700)$ and show that their contribution is significant. We extend the previous analysis by comparing the production of scalars from decays of mesons, of the Higgs bosons and direct production via proton bremsstrahlung, deep inelastic scattering and coherent scattering on nuclei. Relative efficiency of the production channels depends on the energy of the beam and we consider the energies of DUNE, SHiP and LHC-based experiments. Long-lived particles can manifest themselves at the LHC via "displaced vertices" - several charged tracks originating from a position separated from the proton interaction point by a macroscopic distance. Here we demonstrate a potential of the muon trackers at the CMS experiment for displaced vertex searches. In recent years, a number of intensity-frontier experiments have been proposed to search for feebly interacting particles with a mass in the GeV range. We show analytically how the characteristic shape of the sensitivity regions of such experiments - upper and lower boundaries of the probed region, the maximal mass reach - depends on the parameters of the experiments, taking the SHiP and the MATHUSLA experiments as an example. We find a good agreement of our estimates with the results of the Monte Carlo simulations., Comment: Journal version

The origin of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) is one of the major puzzles beyond the Standard Model. Detecting the particles responsible for the generation of the BAU would enormously boost our understanding of physics of the early Universe. Here we demonstrate that searches for displaced vertices at ATLAS, CMS and LHCb allow detecting heavy neutral leptons (HNL) with parameters that can simultaneously lead to the successful generation of the BAU and explain the masses and oscillations of active neutrinos. The combination of a dedicated LHC search program and a complementary Intensity Frontier experiment (such as SHiP) will allow exploring a sizeable part of the "minimal HNL baryogenesis" parameter space.

This paper describes the physics case for a new fixed target facility at CERN SPS. The SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) experiment is intended to hunt for new physics in the largely unexplored domain of very weakly interacting particles with masses below the Fermi scale, inaccessible to the LHC experiments, and to study tau neutrino physics. The same proton beam setup can be used later to look for decays of tau-leptons with lepton flavour number non-conservation, $\tau\to 3\mu$ and to search for weakly-interacting sub-GeV dark matter candidates. We discuss the evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model and describe interactions between new particles and four different portals - scalars, vectors, fermions or axion-like particles. We discuss motivations for different models, manifesting themselves via these interactions, and how they can be probed with the SHiP experiment and present several case studies. The prospects to search for relatively light SUSY and composite particles at SHiP are also discussed.
