Abstract

International audience; Thanks to a homemade dynamic vacuum system, fully crystallized VO2 (M) is successfully synthesized in a merged step of vanadyl ethylene glycolate (VEG) decomposition and crystallization of VO2 at high temperatures (>500 °C). During the whole process, vanadium valence (+4) is well maintained, and VEG microstructure plays an important role in the end-product size and shape. Finally, the suggested route appears well suitable for the mass production of VO2 nanoparticles.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, a pyrolysis method is used to synthesize high quality VO2 powder. Black carbon and V2O5 powder are mixed and annealed at 650 °C or 800 °C under argon flow to initiate a carbo-reduction reaction. The 650 °C VO2 powder presents submicron particle size with an amorphous fraction estimated at 11.5%. With the increase of the annealing temperature up to 800 °C, grains become larger than the micron while the crystallinity goes up to 98.5% (i.e. amorphous fraction drops to 1.5%). This one-step process allows the preparation of quantities up to 10 g of VO2 powder and should be easily transferable to large-scale production. An innovative sintering process is then adopted to produce high quality thermochromic VO2 ceramics from the as-prepared VO2 powder. First, SPS process is used to obtain high-density VO2 pellet. Then, the VO2 pellet is post-annealed in a homemade induction furnace at 1300 °C under a controlled atmosphere to allow grain growth by coalescence and improve pellet surface quality. According to a surface topography analysis, the mean amplitude roughness parameter (Ra) of the obtained VO2 ceramic is found to be 2.93 ± 0.01 nm. A large resistance change by three orders of magnitude along the phase transition is observed, which makes the as-prepared smooth VO2 ceramic a promising candidate for various applications requiring optical and/or electronic switching behavior depending on temperature.

Abstract

International audience; Connected displays are the salient nature of our e-connected society requiring high-quality electronic conductive materials integrated in smart devices. Herein, we highlight the use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) not only as substitutes for ITO (In2O3:Sn) but mainly as a counter electrode for electrochromic devices (ECDs). Using a dry spinning process, conductive CNT films with directionally oriented tubes were successfully laid on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flexible substrates. The CNTs were synthesized as vertically aligned spinnable arrays by chemical vapor deposition. The transparency and optical absorption properties were tuned by adjusting the number of CNT layers (L) within the film from light gray for 1L to dark black above 10L. The CNT films, showing pseudo-capacitive to capacitive behavior in lithium-based electrolytes, were further integrated in ECDs based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) active layers. The fabricated PET/ITO/PEDOT:PSS/electrolyte/CNT/PET device exhibited reproducible and clear color switching from light to dark blue with a coloration efficiency of 88 cm2 C−1. This study highlights novel architecture of ECDs using CNT-based films as conductive counter electrode.

Abstract

An innovative new system under high pressure syntheses activated by pulsed electric current (HP-SPS) was designed and built in-house with belt type apparatus (HP-SPS-Belt). This new HP-SPS- Belt with large volume chamber is capable of reaching high pressures up to 6 GPa and temperatures until 1800 °C. This system was pressure and temperature calibrated by using different metal calibrants. To demonstrate the efficiency of this new equipment in the present work, we have successfully shown the structural γ to α phase transformation in alumina under less severe conditions than in conventional high pressure and temperature processes. Further, we have also used this new HP-SPS-Belt to fabricate shear cutter for drilling bits in an economical way of fabrication. This study shows the wide interest of our unique designed equipment for various applications in materials processing to better control their microstructure and their properties. The evolution of the carbon content, determined by CHNS, of each sample versus the synthesis conditions, namely temperature and type of vacuum system, confirms that the transformation of V (+5) into V (+4) or V (+3) can be controlled. The characterization of the morphologies and crystal structures of two synthesized VO2 (M1) at 700 °C and 1000 °C shows the possibility to tune the crystallite size from 1.8 to more than 5 μm, with a uniform size distribution and highly crystallized powders. High purity VO2 (M1) leads to strong physical properties illustrated by a high latent energy (∼55 J g−1) during the phase transition obtained from DSC as well as high resistivity changes. In addition, with this method, dopants such as Ti4+ or Al3+ can be successfully introduced into VO2 (M1) thanks to the preparation of Al or Ti-doped nano-V2O5 by co-precipitation in polyol medium before carbon-reduction.

Abstract

International audience; Vanadium dioxide is the key thermochromic compound for the next generation of smart windows. Monoclinic vanadium dioxide with tuned crystallinity is synthesized by a two-step thermal treatment: thermolysis of vanadyl ethylene glycolate and postannealing of the poorly crystallized VO2 powder. The proportion of crystallized VO2, calculated with the Fullprof program, increases from 44% to 79% and 100% with increasing annealing temperature up to 700 °C. Besides, V2O3 and V2O5 with particular microstructures are also successfully prepared using this method.

Abstract

We have grown by flux method centimeter-sized single crystals from pseudo-hexanary Li2O–Na2O–K2O–Nb2O5–Ta2O5–Sb2O3 system. Based on chemical analysis, crystals of compositions (Li0.023Na0.583K0.394)(Nb0.925Ta0.037Sb0.038)O3 and (Li0.034Na0.609K0.357)(Nb0.896Ta0.047Sb0.057)O3 were characterized by X-rays diffraction which revealed a tetragonal structure. The dielectric analysis confirmed that the ferroelectric behavior of these crystals is very sensitive to little changes in composition as previously observed on ceramics. Such high flexibility of the ferroelectric properties in crystals opens the way towards improved understanding of the relations between structure and polarization in solid solutions which may be an alternative to the lead-based materials.

Abstract

International audience; A new oxyphosphate, PbFe3O(PO4)3, has been discovered and its structure has been characterized by single-crystal XRD between 293 and 973 K (monoclinic, space groupP21/m, a = 7.5826 Å, b = 6.3759 Å, c = 10.4245 Å, β = 99.956°, Z = 2, at r.t.). Direct-current (DC) magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements performed on single crystals revealed an unusual sequence of second-order ferromagnetic-like phase transitions at Tc1 = 31.8 K, Tc2 = 23.4 K and Tc3 ≈ 10 K. Alternating-current (AC) magnetic susceptibility measurements suggest glass-like dynamics between ca. 20 K and Tc3.

Abstract

International audience; 8% Yttria-stabilized zironcia (8YSZ) transparent ceramics have a wide technological applications. Segregation of the Y around the grain boundaries is favored by slow heating rate. The optimized sintering parameters helped in obtaining transparent ceramics of 8YSZ with a high percentage of cubic phase in addition to the presence of tetragonal phase. HRTEM was used to verify the grain growth suppression and to observe the presence of the cubic phase. The presence of cubic phase has suppressed the grain growth, which increased the transparency in the visible and infrared region without the addition of dopants or by utilizing high pressure.

Abstract

International audience; Transparent Polycrystalline Alumina (PCA) optical ceramics were fabricated at a high heating rate and low temperature by spark plasma sintering (SPS). Maximum pressure (100 MPa) at dwell time keeps the grain size small irrespective of the dwell time. A heating and cooling rate of 100°C min−1 at the sintering temperature of 1150°C for a dwell time of 1 h at 100 MPa yielded highly densified samples with the good transparency of 63 and 83% in visible and infra-red region, respectively. Abstract

International audience; Hydrothermal crystal growth offers a complementary alternative to the conventionally used crystal growth techniques to synthesize new materials and grow bulk crystals for specific applications. These specialized techniques are often capable of growing crystals at temperatures well below their melting points and thus potentially offering routes to new phases or the growth of bulk crystals with less thermal strain. The hydrothermal process is utilized for growing a wide variety of crystals. Most of the electronic industry uses α‐Quartz due to its unique combination of piezoelectricity, high mechanical and chemical stability and very high mechanical coupling factor (Q) at resonance and is a low cost producing method, due to the matured crystal growth technology developed since 1970s. With a melting point of 1706°C and high chemical resistance, quartz crystals would be very difficult to form by either melt or flux techniques. Since cooling through the transition point at 573°C usually produces twins, any technique for production of single crystal must be done below this temperature due to the transition between α and β‐Quartz. Hydrothermal crystal growth helps in obtaining the crystals at temperatures lower than its transition temperature at high pressure. This paper presents hydrothermal growth of Ge doped SiO2 crystals for piezoelectric applications and the general principle of high hydrostatic pressure.

Abstract

International audience; The LUMINEU (Luminescent Underground Molybdenum Investigation for NEUtrino mass and nature) project envisages a high-sensitivity search for neutrinoless double beta (0 nu 2 beta) decay of Mo-100 with the help of scintillating bolometers based on zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4) crystals. One of the crucial points for the successful performance of this experiment is the development of a protocol for producing high quality large mass ZnMoO4 crystal scintillators with extremely high internal radiopurity. Here we report a significant progress in the development of large volume ZnMoO4 crystalline boules (with mass up to 1 kg) from deeply purified materials. We present and discuss the results achieved with two ZnMoO4 samples (with mass of about 0.3 kg each): one is a precursor of the LUMINEU project, while the other one was produced in the framework of LUMINEU with an improved purification / crystallization procedure. The two crystals were measured deep underground as scintillating bolometers in the EDELWEISS dilution refrigerator at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France) protected by a rock overburden corresponding to 4800 m w.e. The results indicate that both tested crystals are highly radiopure. However, the advanced LUMINEU sample shows a clear improvement with respect to the precursor, exhibiting only a trace internal contamination related with Po-210 at the level of 1 mBq/kg, while the activity of Ra-226 and Th-228 is below 0.005 mBq/kg. This demonstrates that the LUMINEU purification and crystal-growth procedures are very efficient and leads to radiopurity levels which exceedingly satisfy not only the LUMINEU goals but also the requirements of a next-generation 0 nu 2 beta experiment.

ISBN: 978-0-7354-1333-7; International audience; The LUMINEU program aims at performing a pilot experiment on 0ν2β decay of 100 Mo using radiopure ZnMoO4 crystals enriched in 100 Mo operated as cryogenic scintillating bolometers. Large volume ZnMoO4 crystal scintillators (∼ 0.3 kg) were developed and tested showing high performance in terms of radiopurity, energy resolution and α/β particle discrimination capability. Zinc molybdate crystal scintillators enriched in 100 Mo were grown for the first time by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique with a high crystal yield and an acceptable level of enriched molybdenum irrecoverable losses. A background level of ∼ 0.5 counts/(yr keV ton) in the region of interest can be reached in a large detector array thanks to the excellent detectors radiopurity and particle discrimination capability, suppression of randomly coinciding events by pulse-shape analysis, and anticoincidence cut. These results pave the way to future sensitive searches based on the LUMINEU technology, capable of approaching and exploring the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern.

Abstract

International audience; Characterizations of linear spectroscopic properties in polarized light have been performed for the highly-concentrated Yb-doped borate family Li6Ln(BO3)3 (with Ln: Gd, Y, and labeled Yb:LLnB), in order to start to evaluate their potentiality for high-power laser applications. Modifications in spectral distributions and intensities are reported with respect to crystal orientation and polarization. Chemical composition and crystal shaping are discussed, pointing strong possible dependence with experimental conditions, which has to be considered so as to take sufficient precautions regarding the prediction of potential laser properties in such anisotropic laser crystals.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we present the results of our attempt to grow NaBiW2O8 (NBW) and Na5B2P3O13 (NBP) crystals by the heat exchanger method (HEM). This method is slightly different from the Bridgman technique: the crucible is kept fixed in the setup and the center of the crucible bottom is cooled by a variable helium gas flow. It allows very good control of the growth rate and minimizes parasitic crystallization at the crucible walls. First experiments for growing these two materials by the HEM technique have shown very promising results with single-crystal sizes of few cubic centimetres..

Abstract

Homoepitaxy of GaAs on hemispherical substrates have been realised by chemical vapour transport in four different gravity levels. Experiments have been performed on earth, under 5 g and 10g acceleration conditions using a centrifuge and under a microgravity environment (EURECA-I mission). The source was either undoped GaAs or tin-doped GaAs. Analysis and comparison of the grown layers show that, in the applied conditions, the gravity level is not a relevant parameter and that tin is an inhibitor for the GaAs epitaxy.

Abstract

International audience; Optical, spectroscopic and thermo-mechanical properties of monoclinic Li6Eu1-xGdx(BO3)3 (x = 0,0.25,0.35) bulk single crystals, grown to be used in the design of heat-scintillation cryogenic bolometers (HSCBs), were investigated. The linear thermal expansion was determined along the a, b, c and c* directions over the temperature range 303–873 K, and its tensor principal coefficients were calculated for both x = 0.25 and x = 0. In addition, the anisotropic thermal conductivity was measured over the temperature range 20-400 K in Li6Eu0.75Gd0.25(BO3)3 (LGEB7, x = 0.25), and the principal components of its tensor at 300 K were established. Spectroscopic properties such as polarized absorption, polarized emission, Raman spectroscopy and optical refractive indices are also reported for the first time. Based on the polarized emission spectra, the line and oscillator strengths, the radiative lifetimes and fluorescent branching ratios were obtained. The intensity parameters Ωλ (λ = 2,4) were obtained and then predicted via the Judd–Ofelt theory. The crystal field parameters and the 7F1 level splitting were discussed using the simple overlap model (SOM) and the method of equivalent nearest neighbours (MENN). The 613 nm emission originates from the 5D0→7F2 transition and the associated stimulated emission peak cross section reaches its maximum value in π-polarization, ≈1.07 × 10−20 cm2 in LGEB7. The thermo-mechanical characterizations and spectroscopic analysis in LGEB7 suggest that this crystal has better optical properties than the Eu3+-doped Li6Y(BO3)3 crystals. However, its potential for solid-state laser applications is still quite speculative, unless a clever thermo-mechanical management of the crystal under laser operation is designed.

Abstract

International audience; Transparent ceramics of zinc oxide (ZnO) and 10% Yb3+ doped Lu2O3 (YLO) were fabricated by spark plasma sintering. The major sintering parameters to obtain transparent ceramics and their interdependency on each other are explained for cubic and non-cubic crystal structured transparent ceramics. Highly densified YLO and ZnO ceramics were obtained at 1250 °C and 850 °C, respectively. Postannealing of sintered YLO and ZnO ceramics at 1200 °C and 700 °C respectively removes discoloration and improves transparency. The 2 mm thick YLO ceramics prepared at 1700 °C with dwell time of 5 min and heating rate at 50 °C/min shows the maximum transmittance of 55% at a wavelength of 2 μm and the 2 mm thick ZnO transparent ceramics prepared at 1100 °C with dwell time of 20 min and heating rate of 10 °C/min shows maximum transmittance in the visible region with nearly 60% transmittance.

In this contribution, the authors present, the first laser experiments ever demonstrated with Yb:Gd2O3 and Yb:Y2O3 crystals grown by this new flux method. Abstract

The home-made heat exchanger method (HEM) apparatus has been adapted to the growth of NaMgF 3 ingots. By unseeded crystal growth using presynthesized NaMgF 3 the structure was maintained during growth. Twinning introduced by the high-temperature phase transition is observed in the crystal. Studies on the crystals, at high temperature, by optical microscopy, calorimetry and Raman scattering, show a unique phase transition, from orthorhombic (Pbnm) to cubic (Pm3m) structure, at about 770°C.

Abstract

The LUMINEU program aims at performing a pilot experiment on neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo using radiopure ZnMoO4 crystals operated as scintillating bolometers. Growth of high quality radiopure crystals is a complex task, since there are no commercially available molybdenum compounds with the required levels of purity and radioactive contamination. This paper discusses approaches to purify molybdenum and synthesize compound for high quality radiopure ZnMoO4 crystal growth. A combination of a double sublimation (with addition of zinc molybdate) with subsequent recrystallization in aqueous solutions (using zinc molybdate as a collector) was used. Abstract

International audience; We present the crystal growth of centimeter-sized 6Li6Eu(10BO3)3 and Li6(Eu,Gd)(BO3)3 single crystals by combined Czochralski and Kyropoulos methods, initiated on specifically oriented seeds, with a heretofore unexplored concentration range for heat-scintillation cryogenic bolometers application. The crystal structure and lattice thermal expansion of the former, obtained for the first time by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the spectroscopic characterizations together with a consistent set of related thermodynamical properties measurements (magnetic susceptibility, specific heat), also unknown to date, are discussed. Abstract

International audience; We present, to the best of our knowledge, the first laser demonstration of an Yb-doped Gd2O3 cubic crystal. This crystal was obtained by the flux method using an original borate-based solvent, which was particularly well suited to the growth of rare earth sesquioxide crystals at half the working temperature of classical growth techniques. This flux method is a very interesting alternative for the production of laser sesquioxide crystals, not only because it provides access to new matrices of the cubic polymorph, but also because it permits high Yb3+-doping levels for these crystals. The first laser results of two highly Yb3+-doped sesquioxides, namely Gd2O3 and Y2O3, grown by this flux method are presented here, including the Ti:sapphire and diode pumping configurations. Laser efficiencies and emission spectra for these two crystals were studied and compared.

International audience; The PbFe3O(PO4)3 powder compound was studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) from 300 to 6 K, electron-probe microanalysis (EPMA) coupled with wavelength dispersion spectroscopy (WDS), calorimetric (DSC and specific heat) and magnetic properties measurements. Magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements carried out on PbFe3O(PO4)3 powders firmly establish a series of three ferromagnetic (FM)-like second order phase transitions spanned over the 32-8 K temperature range. Discrepancies between magnetization and specific heat data obtained in PbFe3O(PO4)3 powders and single crystals are highlighted. A first extraction of the critical exponents (β,γ,δ) was performed by ac magnetic susceptibility in both PbFe3O(PO4)3 powders and single crystals and the values were found to be consistent with mean-field theory. Further exploration of the PbO-Fe2O3-P2O5 system led to the discovery of a new langbeinite phase, Pb1.5Fe2(PO4)3, the crystal structure of which was solved by room temperature single crystal XRD (P213, Z=4, a=9.7831(2) Å). This phase does not undergo any structural phase transition down to 6 K nor any kind of long range ordering down to 2 K.

Abstract

Developing large laser grade cubic rare-earth sesquioxides (RE 2 O 3 , RE=Y,Sc,Lu) single crystals doped with Yb 3+ ions stands as one of the most challenging endeavours of today's crystal growth 1,2 . Recent studies on cubic RE 2 O 3 single crystals have demonstrated their laser potential and highlighted the extreme thermodynamic conditions in which their growth takes place 1-3 . In particular, the laser performances of Lu 2 O 3 :Yb 3+ crystals make them likely to outperform betterknown rivals such as YAG:Yb 3+ or KY(WO 4 ) 2 :Yb 3+ for 976 nm diode-pumped systems 4 . Several mm 3 -sized Yb 3+ -doped Y 2 O 3 , Gd 2 O 3 and Lu 2 O 3 single crystals were recently grown by a newly designed high-temperature solution growth method 5 , and characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Spectroscopic characterizations (absorption and emission cross sections, visible anti-Stokes emission, fluorescence decays) of these new cubic RE 2 O 3 :Yb 3+ (RE=Y,Lu) single crystals are presented.

Abstract

International audience; Cd1−xMnxTe (x=0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9) (CMT) single crystals were grown by the vertical Bridgman method. The optical studies reveal that with the increase in Mn concentration, the band gap values increase, which is attributed to s, p-d exchange interaction between the band carriers and Mn ions. Faraday rotation angle of the grown CMT (x=0.5) crystals were measured at the following wavelengths: 825, 1060 and 1575 nm. It was inferred that CMT exhibit larger Faraday effect (3-6 times larger than terbium-gallium garnet (TGG) currently used for optical isolators) making it as an efficient material for optical isolator at longer wavelengths. Field-cooled and zero field-cooled magnetizations of CMT were measured as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The spin-glass like behavior of CMT and their tendency to decrease in magnitude with increasing Mn concentration have been analyzed. The metal contacts on the Cd1−xMnxTe (x=0.1, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9) crystals have been made with various metals and metal alloys to establish the ohmic contact. The detector characteristics of CMT have been tested using γ-rays with 511 keV (22 Na) and 59.5 keV (241 Am).

International audience; The Yb-content Li6Ln(BO3)3 (Ln: Gd, Y) solid solution has been investigated. Crystal growth has been successful for several compositions. A 22% molar content of ytterbium ions was determined by chemical analysis (ICP). Physical properties relevant to laser operation like mechanical hardness, thermal expansion and thermal conductivity were measured on single crystals. Optical measurements, including refractive index and low temperature spectroscopy, were also performed. Finally, the effect of the Y/Gd ratio is discussed.

Abstract

International audience; Crystal growth and spectroscopic study of the new compound Yb3+:LiLu(WO4)2 have been undertaken for the first time. Preliminary growth using flux method with Li2W2O7 as solvent allows us to obtain small single crystals. As a promising laser crystal, Yb3+:LiLu(WO4)2 have characteristics of a low concentration quenching effect and low laser threshold owing to the existence of covalent bands in WO4 group. Its absorption peak at 977 nm, corresponding to 2F7/2(1) → 2F5/2(5) transition, is suitable for laser diode pumping. Emission spectrum shows large bands extending from 900 to 1100 nm, five peaks centred respectively at 959, 978, 997, 1025 and 1056 nm are well resolved. The FWHM of the most intense emission band located at 997 nm is about 20 nm. Energy Stark levels are: 0, 201, 469 and 749 cm−1 for the 2F7/2 component and: 10,230, 10,427 and 10,890 cm−1 for the 2F5/2 component. The overall splitting of 2F7/2 ground-state manifold is 749 cm−1, which is larger than that observed in similar systems such as Yb3+:LiLa(WO4)2 (632 cm−1). Such large crystal-field splitting of the 2F7/2 ground-state will be advantageous to lower laser thermal effect and re-absorption losses. As we can see, the stark electronic levels are characterized by relatively large crystal-field splitting favourable to laser crystal applications in the near infrared spectral region.

Abstract

International audience; X-band electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra and fluorescence measurements were performed on Mn-doped Na2ZnP2O7 (NZPO) single crystal synthesized by the Czochralski pulling method and glasses synthesized by the quenching process. For the single crystal, ESR angular dependences were measured in both the zx and xy plans of the NZPO lattice. The fine and hyperfine structure parameters and g-factor values were determined by modelling the experimental spectra. Using the Newman superposition model, the resonating centres in the single crystal and powder (crushed from crystals) samples are assigned to Mn2+ ions substituting for both zinc and sodium. For the glass sample the analysis of the ESR data shows that Mn2+ ions substitute for the Na+ ions. These interpretations are confirmed by the fluorescence measurements with a unique broad red band for the glassy compound and the presence of two emission bands (green and red) in the case of the crystal sample.

Abstract

Zinc telluride crystals are grown by the Travelling Heater Method under excess tellurium conditions. Ingots with large single crystals, the order of 1/2 cm3, are obtained. Infrared microscopy shows some tellurium secondary phases. Resistivities of about 1010 Ω.cm are reached using V-Al and V-Sc codopings. A weak photorefractive gain is measured on the ZnTe : V : Al crystal. Samples are characterised by optical spectroscopy, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance and Photoluminescence in order to explain these results. More particularly, the lack of active vanadium is shown to be responsible of the weak gain. A signal corresponding to the Sc interstitial is detected by Photoluminescence.

Abstract

International audience; The electrical and photoconductive properties of Bridgman grown vanadium–zinc co-doped CdTe bulk crystals are strongly influenced by one native intrinsic defect previously attributed to the Te vacancy. In order to identify this defect and control its formation mechanism, a correlated electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and modulated photocurrent (MPC) study has been made. The results obtained allow us to attribute this defect to the TeCd antisite, a double donor. By EPR and MPC its +/2+ level position has been determined to Ec - 0.20 eV. Four other centres of minor concentrations were characterized by MPC in as-grown crystals. From the MPC results the density of states for CdTe:V materials has been determined.

Abstract

New applications in dynamic holography raise the need to control photorefractive properties of CdTe at 1.06 as well as 1.55 ?m. In this goal, correlations between Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and Modulated PhotoCurrent (MPC) have been made in order to probe and identify the density of state of CdTe. Experiments were undertaken on as-grown and annealed samples. Results allowed complete characterization of the TeCd antisite, a level previously attributed to the Te vacancy by EPR. Four other centers were detected.

Abstract

International audience; Experimental observations on spiralgrowth phenomena in the Cz-growth of Li6Gd(BO3)3 single crystals are described. With careful observations at the meniscus part during the pulling, we found that the faceting formation is closely correlated with a "dog-leg" footing in combination with unsteady melt convection modes. It is assumed that one of predominant origin of the so-called spiralgrowth should be the faceting inclined against the pulling axis at the meniscus part of the solid-liquid interface. Several origins reported so far are also discussed.

Abstract

The LUMINEU program aims at performing a pilot experiment on neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo using radiopure ZnMoO4 crystals operated as cryogenic scintillating bolometers. Growth of high quality radiopure crystals is a complex task, since there are no commercial molybdenum compounds available with the required level of purity and radioactive contamination. This paper discusses approaches to purify molybdenum and synthesize compounds for high quality radiopure ZnMoO4 crystal growth. A combination of a double sublimation (with addition of zinc molybdate) with subsequent recrystallization in aqueous solutions (using zinc molybdate as a collector) was used. Zinc molybdate crystals up to 1.5 kg were grown by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique; their optical, luminescent, diamagnetic, thermal and bolometric properties were tested.

Abstract

International audience; Optimal properties like piezoelectricity can be found in polarizable materials for which the structure changes sharply under small composition variations in the vicinity of their morphotropic phase boundary or the triple point in their isobaric temperature-composition phase diagram. In the latter, lead-free (Ba0.850Ca0.150)(Ti0.900Zr0.100)O3 ceramics exhibit outstanding piezoelectric coefficients. For the first time, we report the growth of piezoelectric lead-free single crystals in the BaTiO3-BaZrO3-CaTiO3 pseudo-ternary system. The stoichiometry control in the CaO-BaO-TiO2-ZrO2 solid solution led to single crystals with various compositions ranging from (Ba0.857Ca0.143)(Ti0.928Zr0.072)O3 to (Ba0.953Ca0.047)(Ti0.427Zr0.573)O3. We evidenced a continuous cross-over from a ferroelectric state at high titanium content to a relaxor one on increasing the zirconium content. Such a property tuning is rather seldom observed in lead-free ferroelectrics and confirms what was already reported for ceramics. Single crystal with (Ba0.838Ca0.162)(Ti0.854Zr0.146)O3 composition, which has been grown and oriented along [001] crystallographic direction, displayed electromechanical coefficients d31 and k31 of 93 pC.N−1 and 0.18, respectively, near the room temperature (T = 305 K).

Abstract

Neutrons are a relevant background in rare events physics. Detectors based on fast neutron-induced nuclear reactions are commonly used for fast neutron spectroscopy. In this subject, scintillating bolometers provide an excellent energy resolution and particle discrimination by the simultaneous measurement of the heat and emitted light. Our group has constructed several 6Li and 10B based massive scintillating bolometers (LiF, Li6Eu(BO3)3, Li6Gd(BO3)3), with energy resolutions ranging from 16 to 200 keV. First results of a 32 gr 6LiF scintillating bolometer enriched at 95% in 6Li operated at 20 mK are presented. The use of this material in a multi-target cryogenic dark matter experiment, like EURECA, would allow monitoring the incident neutron flux in the detector during the data-taking.
