This study investigated teachers' and counsellors' perception of a purpose-based career coaching as a strategy for increasing employability of graduates in Nigeria. The design employed to conduct this study was a cross-sectional survey design that featured desk research and sensitivity workshop. The participants were 100 teachers and 100 counsellors from South-East region of Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling procedure was adopted in this study. Purpose-based Career Coaching and Employability Questionnaire" (PCCEQ) was used to collect data, while descriptive and inferential analysis were used to analyse data. The results obtained revealed that the knowledge level of the teachers and counsellors increased through the sensitivity workshop with respect to the use of purpose-based career coaching as a strategy for increasing employability of graduates. In addition, with a slight significant difference, the perception of both teachers and the counsellors was high in terms of application, workability and effectiveness of the purpose-based career coaching. Gender did not have any significant contribution or influence on the participants' perceptions. Therefore, the conclusion reached in this study is that teachers and counsellors perceived purpose-based career coaching as effective, applicable and workable strategy for increasing employability of graduates in Nigeria.

The purpose of the current study was to explore the effect of modality (constructionist mBlock, Scratch, and Python interventions) on six-grade students' computational thinking, programming attitude, and achievement. The pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental design was used to explore the research questions. The study group consisted of 105 six grade students from three different classes. A constructionist learning environment was formed for Scratch, mBlock, and Python groups. All groups were given 8 week-instruction. Instruction included two forty-minute sessions each week. The data were collected through the programming achievement test, computational thinking test, and computer programming attitude scale. The results of the study showed that mBlock group outperformed the Scratch and Python groups with respect to computer programming attitude. Students who attended mBlock and Scratch groups had higher levels of programming achievement than those of the students who attended the Python group. No significant differences with respect to computational thinking were observed between the groups. This study has implications for educators who are teaching computational thinking and programming. Further research was recommended to explore the effect of modality.

Abstract In recent years, building materials made from agricultural waste have become popular due to their lower cost and environmental impact. The Bio-Brick is mixed with Cement-Fly Ash and Hydrated Lime and a fine aggregate of groundnut shell in percentages (20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, and 60%). The optimum mix proportions of Bio-Brick and hydrated lime mortar were found from the compressive strength and were further continued to study the dry density, water absorption, and efflorescence. Machine Learning techniques are used to optimize and predict the properties of Bio-Bricks and mortars. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are employed to forecast properties such as compressive strength, dry density, and water absorption with exceptional accuracy. The results from RSM models exhibit high degrees of accuracy, with R-squared values exceeding 0.88 for compressive strength, dry density, and water absorption. ANN models further enhance this predictive power, with R-squared values exceeding 0.99 in predicting these critical properties.

Life is meaningless, drowsy, stressful, boring, wasteful, and fruitless without purpose. Hence, purpose justifies someone’s existence on earth. It is assumed therefore that nobody was born by accident. The Creator, God thought about it and decided that it was good for one to be born. It is therefore one’s responsibility to find the reasons that justify one’s existence on earth and choose a career that corresponds with it. The main purpose of this article was to explore the steps for implementing purpose-based career coaching. The study was a mixed method research aiming to explore the experiences and perspectives of individuals about purpose-based career coaching. Participants included students, graduates, teachers, parents, counsellors, and lecturers. Data was generated through multiple methods, including individual interviews, focus groups, and qualitative surveys. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data and identify key themes. The findings of this study revealed three distinct themes: 12 steps guide for a purpose-based career coaching, the core beliefs underlying purpose-based coaching, and the objectives associated with purpose-based career coaching. With these themes in mind, practitioners can adopt a holistic approach when coaching individuals towards achieving their purpose-driven career goals. This structured approach to career coaching ensures a comprehensive and systematic exploration of the career-related challenges and opportunities that individuals may face. Throughout the article, attention is given to the integration of spirituality into the career development process. The implication of the article is that through the incorporation of spiritual principles and practices, individuals can tap into a deeper sense of purpose and direction which will in turn enable them to navigate their career journeys with clarity and confidence. In addition, the article offers helpful information and techniques to help people grow in their spiritual awareness and incorporate it into their work lives. A safe and secure environment is an essential part of the early childhood development of any child. This study aims to investigate the safety and protection practices of early childhood centers in the Anambra state, Nigeria, and to determine if any improvements can be made to them. This study analyzed data collected from 60 Early Childhood Care Centers (ECCE Centers) and 60 Pre-Primary Schools (Preprimary School) in Anambra State using the Evaluation of ECCE Implementation Kit (KEIEP), direct observation, and unstructured interviews, all of which were conducted using the evaluation tool. Using descriptive statistics, chi-squares, and student t-statistics, the data were analyzed. According to the results of this study, 28.0% of the private ECCE centers were in compliance with the requirements for enough space for children to play, fenced facilities, a standard first aid box, a splint bandage and an antiseptic. It is important to note that the majority of public early childhood education centers (62.0%) comply with the requirements for fencing, a first aid box, splint bandages, cotton wool, antiseptic, scissors, methylated spirit, liniment, analgesics, and thermometers, whereas 31% of those centers do not have the remaining seven practices. A conclusion of the study was that both private and public ECCE centers in Anambra State comply with the safety and protection provisions and practices in place.

This study was designed to explore career-related strategies for strengthening poverty reduction programmes in Nigerian communities. Using a phenomenological framework and interpretive paradigm, the study used a qualitative research design. The participants of this study consisted of five key officers working in the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (FMHAPA) in Nigeria and five counsellors working in Nigerian secondary schools. The participants were selected through a purposeful sampling process. Data collection measures include interviews, focus group discussion, and document analysis. All participants were interviewed to collect data, which was analyzed using thematic analysis. To identify themes and patterns in the responses provided by the participants, the interviews were recorded and transcribed. In accordance with the findings of this study, career-related strategies for strengthening poverty reduction programmes in Nigerian communities include employability skills development, access to quality education, job creation and entrepreneurship, supportive networks, social justice and corporate responsibilities, and appropriate work policy. A major contribution of this study is the identification of career-related strategies to help strengthen poverty reduction programmes in Nigerian communities. Another contribution is the implications that can be drawn for career counselling.

This paper will explore policy shifts in Nigeria’s oil and gas, solar, nuclear, and mineral energy sectors. This policy shift by way of a transition, indigenization, and Nigerianization, has given way to deregulation, decentralization, and de-indigenization of many industries, most notably in the oil and gas sector, through the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) of 2021 and the Local Content Act of 2010 (LCA). The paper recommends, amongst others, the establishment of a new legal regime that grants resource-based and property rights to resource-bearing communities and incorporates principles of international law, energy diplomacies, International Environmental Law, and international best practices.

AbstractEconomic policies are drivers of development. The President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration in Nigeria (2015–2023) recognized that the economy is likely to remain on a path of steady and steep decline if nothing is done to change the trajectory of declining economic growth. This concern led to the initiation of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan. The objective of the paper is to examine the experience of the Nigerian economy with the plan. This is desk research. Data are obtained from secondary sources and analyzed through content analysis. It leverages extant literature and the publication of the National Bureau of Statistics (2017), Budget Office of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2020), and Nigeria Economic and Sustainability Plan (2020) to discuss the framework and implementation of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), Economic Sustainability Plan and the National Development Plan, in Nigeria. The results of the content analysis show that certain affect the effective implementation of the economic plan. The challenges include a lack of policy continuity, weak institutions and corporate governance, and inadequate funding of policy goals, among other things. By implication, the contributions of the policies to national development have not been significant. The paper advocates the need for the present administration to support the goals of the National Development Plan, by funding the policy goals and strengthening the administrative framework of the bureaucracy for effective performance and sustainability.

The main purpose of this study was to investigate on how Mathematics teachers' demographic variables could influence their instructional effectiveness in Senior secondary schools in Cross River State, Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of this study, two research hypotheses were generated to direct the study. Literature review was done according to the variables and hypotheses for the study to facilitate the discussion of findings. Ex-post facto research design was adopted for the study. Purposive sampling technique was used by the researcher, were all the members in the population were selected. The questionnaire was the main instrument used for data collection. The data were collected personally by the researcher and the assistants. To test the hypotheses formulated to direct the study, the independent and dependent variables were identified. Independent t-test and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were considered most appropriate to test the hypotheses for the study. The 0.05 level of significance was used for the statistical testing of each of the hypothesis for the study. The result of the analysis indicated that educational qualification and teaching experience significantly influence instructional effectiveness of Mathematics teachers. Based on the conclusion of the study it was recommended that Government should organize regular seminars and workshops for all the Mathematics teachers in secondary schools, irrespective of their qualification towards effective utilization of instructional materials and methods of teaching.

Introduction: Nigeria's age-specific fertility rates are highest among the country's youth population, yet little is known about the factors that influence female youth fertility in Nigeria. This study examined fertility trends and risk factors associated with high fertility among Nigerian female youth aged 15 to 29. Methods: We examined a pooled data from four rounds of the Nigeria Demographic and Health Surveys (conducted in 2003, 2008, 2013, and 2018). Of the data, 62,713 female youth were extracted for this study. Descriptive statistics and multinomial logistic regression were employed. Results: The results show that 21.5 % of the sample had 3 or more children. Between 2003 and 2018, there was a drop of only 28 live births per 1000 women among the youth. Female youth with less than a secondary education were twice as likely to have 1–2 children (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.54, 95 % confidence interval [CI] = 1.43–1.66) and three times as likely to have 3 or more children (aOR = 3.32, 95 % CI = 3.03–3.64) compared to those with a secondary education or higher. Unmarried female youth were 95 % less likely to have 1–2 children and 98 % less likely to have 3 or more children. Additionally, female youth from the lowest-income families were twice as likely to have 1–2 children (aOR = 2.06, 95 % CI = 1.84–1.84) and four times as likely to have 3 or more children (aOR = 3.50, 95 % CI = 3.03–4.05) compared to those from the highest-income families. Conclusion: To control high fertility, significant improvement in education, employment, ending early marriage, poverty and unfavorable pronatalist cultural norms, are required.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) production and productivity in Africa is affected by two viral diseases; cassava mosaic disease (CMD) and cassava brown streak disease (CBSD). Induced mutagenesis of totipotent/embryogenic tissues or in vitro plant material can lead to the generation of CMD and/or CBSD tolerant mutants. To massively produce non-chimeric plants timely and with less labor, totipotent cells or tissues are a pre-requisite. This study aimed to determine the effect of gamma radiation on the proliferation and growth of friable embryogenic callus (FEC) and in vitro nodal cuttings respectively. To obtain FEC, 2-6 mm sized leaf lobes of nine cassava genotypes were plated on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal media supplemented with varying levels (37, 50, 70, 100) μM of picloram for production of organized embryogenic structures (OES). The OES of five cassava genotypes (Alado, CV-60444, NASE 3, NASE 13 and TME 204) were crushed and plated in Gresshoff and Doy (GD) basal media in combination with the amino acid tyrosine in varying concentrations for FEC production. FEC from five cassava genotypes and in vitro nodal cuttings of nine genotypes were irradiated using five different gamma doses (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 Gy) at a dose rate of 81Gy/hr. The lethal dose (LD)50 was determined using the number of roots produced and flow cytometry was done to determine the ploidy status of plants. The highest production of OES was noted in Alado across varying picloram concentrations, while TME 204 obtained the highest amount of FEC. The irradiated FEC gradually died and by 28 days post irradiation, FEC from all five cassava genotypes were lost. Conversely, the irradiated in vitro nodal cuttings survived and some produced roots, while others produced callus. The LD50 based on number of roots varied from genotype to genotype, but plants remained diploid post-irradiation. Accordingly, the effect of gamma irradiation on Ugandan cassava genotypes (UCGs) was genotype-dependent. This information is foundational for the use of in vitro tissues as target material for cassava mutation breeding.

This study investigated the plight of working mothers of children under the age of 18 at the University of Nigeria within the context of work-family conflict, using data from a cross-sectional sample of 485 academic and non-academic staff selected through a multi-staged sampling technique. Data were obtained using questionnaires and seven IDI (in-depth interview) respondents. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as percentages and frequency tables, while the Chi-square was used to examine the study variables. The results indicated that there is a statistically significant relationship between couples living together and the stress experience of working mothers with under-age children. The findings further show that there is a statistically significant relationship between the staff category of working mothers and the experience of stress. This underscored the recommendation that the government needs to review the working conditions of women and support workplace policies that allow flexibility and support for working mothers. Social workers are also recommended to be involved in some government and organization policies that will help to reduce work overload for working mothers. The study examines the impact of crime on sustainable tourism development in the southern senatorial district of Cross River State, Nigeria, focusing on kidnapping, armed robbery, and drug abuse/trafficking in relation to the Calabar Carnival. Employing a survey design, data from 384 respondents were collected through questionnaires and interviews. Simple linear regression analysis indicates a significant association between kidnapping, armed robbery, drug abuse/trafficking, and sustainable tourism, particularly the Calabar Carnival. Recommendations include prioritizing local community involvement in tourism management to address security concerns, enhancing security personnel training in tourism education and modern policing techniques, and allocating increased funding for alternative means of subsistence for indigenous populations. These measures aim to mitigate negative impacts, encourage tourism, and foster sustainability in the region.

The study investigated the indiscipline of senior secondary school students and the contribution of home behaviour control and religiosity in Cross River State, Nigeria. An ex-post facto research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised 62,501 senior secondary school students in three educational zones. A multistage sampling procedure was adopted to select 1250 students from 30 randomly sampled public and private secondary schools. The Student Opinion Questionnaire (SOQ) was used for data collection. Experts in measurement and evaluation and educational psychology validated the instrument. The test-retest reliability coefficient ranged from 0.78-0.91. The data collected were analysed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results revealed that home behaviour control and home religiosity significantly influenced secondary school students' indiscipline behaviour. Specifically, students from firm homes and with high levels of religiosity generally exhibited lower indiscipline behaviour across all the dimensions. In comparison, those from lax homes and homes with low levels of religiosity manifested higher levels of indiscipline behaviour. These findings align with role theory, which suggests that individuals' behaviour is shaped by their immediate social environment. Policymakers can use these results to develop programs that promote positive behaviour by encouraging the development of a strong religious foundation in the home and promoting clear expectations and rules for behaviour.

Cesarean sections have become increasingly common globally, including in Nigeria. This qualitative study explores the perceptions and experiences of postpartum women who underwent cesarean sections within the distinct contexts of Ibadan in Oyo State, Nigeria. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with 24 postpartum women in selected health facilities in urban and rural areas. A diverse sample was purposively selected to capture a range of experiences based on age, residence, education, and cultural backgrounds. Thematic analysis was employed to identify patterns and themes within the data. The findings revealed diverse emotional responses among participants, ranging from relief and gratitude to disappointment and feelings of loss for not experiencing a vaginal birth. Societal pressures and cultural expectations played a significant role in influencing women’s perceptions and experiences of cesarean sections. Future childbirth preferences and support systems, including healthcare provider–patient relationships and community support, were identified as crucial factors impacting postoperative recovery. This study contributes to the understanding of women’s perceptions of cesarean sections within the local context of Ibadan, Nigeria. The findings underscore the importance of culturally sensitive healthcare practices, clear communication, and support systems to enhance the birthing experiences of women undergoing cesarean sections.

Religious extremism and radicalization have dominated the discourse on the causes of terrorism. However, little is written of other drivers of terrorism, such as economic and social deprivations, which could prompt religious groups to resort to terrorism. Scholars have sufficiently analyzed the imports of radical ideological and religious views on the emergence of terrorist groups such as Al-Qaida, ISIS, Boko Haram, and Al-Shabaab. By contrast, the Seleka and anti-Balaka terrorists of the Central African Republic introduces a new perspective to the explanation of terrorism. This essay uses the analytical framework of abnormality and State fragility to discuss the rise of terrorism in the Central African Republic. The essay argues that the historical precedent of State failure and weak institutions provides a catalyst that propels the use of terrorism by religious groups, the state and organized groups to demand political and economic dividends as well as a tool for power contestations and regime change. The study recommends multiple peacebuilding and building nation-building processes that will aid the transformation of the state. They include the transformation of the subsistence farming culture to a masses-driven cash crop economy for exportation, which will manage state fragility and promote civil-military counter-terrorism culture at the grassroots.

The need for more accurate GDP predictions in Nigeria has necessitated the exploration of additional indicators that reflect economic activities and socio-economic factors. This research pioneers a comprehensive approach to predicting Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by integrating a wide array of indicators beyond traditional economic metrics. The primary objective is to enhance the prediction accuracy of Nigeria's GDP using a diverse range of socio-economic indicators. Drawing from data spanning 2000 to 2021, the study incorporates variables like healthcare expenditure, net migration rates, population demographics, life expectancy, access to electricity, and internet usage. Utilising machine learning techniques such as Random Forest Regressor, XGBoost Regressor, and Linear Regression, the study rigorously evaluates the efficacy of these algorithms in forecasting GDP. The analysis reveals that all selected indicators have a strong correlation with GDP. Significantly, the Random Forest Regressor emerges as the most robust model, boasting an R2 score of 0.96 and a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 24.29. The study underscores that optimising factors like healthcare, internet access, and electricity availability could serve as pivotal levers for accelerating Nigeria's economic growth.

Temporary labor migration is a household phenomenon among rural communities in India. This study seeks to understand the subjective experiences influencing the temporariness of labor migration among internal migrants in India by examining various factors such as migration conditions, motivation, migration arrangements, coping and adaptation strategies, and determinants of stay. To achieve this objective, the current qualitative study utilized 14 in-depth interviews and 2 focus group discussions to investigate the temporary nature of labor migration among internal migrants in India. Our findings reveal that migration decisions are rational choices made collectively at the household level, considering socio-economic outcomes. We also find that social networks and contractors facilitate migration arrangements and job connections, and migrants employ various strategies to reduce costs and cope with expenses in urban areas. However, migration destinations often fail to meet migrants’ expectations, exposing them to low-wage employment and precarious working and living conditions, which are detrimental to their health. Limited housing and sanitation facilities further contribute to the challenges faced by migrants. Work conditions, including poor wages and high job demands, also affect their well-being. These findings highlight the need for improved support systems that address accommodation challenges, work conditions, and the overall welfare of labor migrants.

The fruit of Saba senegalensis is respectively known among local folks in Ghana, Senegal, and Burkina Faso as εsononantin, maad and weda. The plant has been used traditionally, ethnobotanically, and medicinally in most West African countries. The phytochemicals that have been discovered in various extracts of S. senegalensis parts include alkaloids, coumarins, anthracene glycosides, anthocyanosides, anthocyanins, coumarins, flavonoids, saponins, saponin glycosides, sterols, condensed tannins, tannins, triterpenes, and triterpenoids. Presently, isolation and characterisation of phytochemicals from various parts of S. senegalensis has not been fully explored since scientists have isolated only two steroidal alkaloids from the stem of the plant namely Irehine and Homoandrost-9-ene-17β,17aβ-diol-3β-(methylamino)-17aα-methyl-12-one. The phytochemicals have shown biological properties such as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, anti-microbial, analgesic, larvicidal, ovicidal, myostimulant, hypotensive, anti-diabetic, anti-lipid peroxidation and anti-mycobacterial effects. Additionally, isolation and characterisation of medicinally beneficial phytochemicals from various parts of the plant, namely latex, leaf, stem, flower, root, fruit, and bark should be comprehensively investigated. Thus, this current review summarises the traditional uses, phytochemicals, and biological properties of various parts of the plant.

Background: Artificial intelligence is already altering the world and raising important questions for society, the economy, and governance. Scholars have largely focused on the utility of AI for human existence. Limited scholarly works seem to specifically address the potential and the adverse effects of AI-dominated use in the area of academic research. Objective: This paper attempts to reflect on the implications of the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academic research. Specifically, it examines the potential and possible threats of AI to academic research. Methodology: The paper adopted an exploratory research approach that seeks to explore the emerging AI relationship with academic research to stimulate further study in the new field. Data were collected through a literature search to support the polemic discussion of the issues raised. Results: The paper posits that Artificial Intelligence’s dominant use in academic research has the potential to analyse large datasets with speed and ease, reduce plagiarism, and improve literature review. However, it is likely to limit critical thinking, academic creativity, and the creation of indolence among academics and can also induce machine-mediated plagiarism, known as AIgiarism. Conclusion: The paper concludes that though the application of Artificial Intelligence presents some advantages in the field of education, unethical reliance on it diminishes human creativity in scholarship and formerly recognises indolence in academic activities. Unique contribution: The paper has articulated a discussion that can inform ethical and legal framework on the application of Artificial Intelligence in academic research. Recommendation: AI tools need to be developed to distinguish between AI-supported research write-ups and human-written papers. This is important to discourage AIgiarism (plagiarism), which is inevitably thrown up by intelligent software applications.

This study explores herd production characteristics and phenotypic traits of indigenous dairy cattle in the grassland agroecology of Nigeria. The study highlighted the crucial role of agroecology as a modifier of cattle production operations and emphasized the need for further research to understand the genetic basis of variations in the production. Herd production data were collected through focus group meetings using FEAST software, while body measurements and phenotypic traits of lactating and breeding cattle were recorded in the agroecological zone within the grassland. The data obtained were subjected to descriptive statistics, and Moses Test of Extreme Reaction using SPSS v.20.0.0. The results indicate that the agroecology type significantly influenced various herd production characteristics (p < 0.05). Additionally, agroecology had a significant effect on body measurements and phenotypic trait expressions in the cattle, including live weight, body condition score, testis circumference, age at puberty, and age at first calving (p < 0.05). Furthermore, age differences were observed among cows based on the agroecological zones (p = 0.008), while no significant variation was found in the age of breeding bulls across both agroecology. This study concludes that within the Nigeria's grassland, agroecology plays a crucial role as a modifier of herd production characteristics and phenotypic trait expressions in smallholder dairy cattle operations. These cannot be unconnected with genetics, hence, there is a need for understanding the genetic basis of the variations.

Abstract Due to the high costs of traditional concrete materials in Nigeria, such as river sand, there is an increasing demand to explore alternative materials like laterite for fine aggregates. Although laterite is abundant in Nigeria, its full potential in the construction industry remains untapped. Previous studies have shown that partially replacing river sand with laterite produces concrete with competitive strength properties. This research aims to validate and extend these findings, evaluating the impact of different aggregate sizes (12 mm, 20 mm, and 40 mm) on the strength of concrete with 10% and 25% laterite replacements for fine aggregate. Results revealed that as the laterite percentage increased, compressive, flexural, and split tensile strengths decreased. While 0% and 10% laterite replacements met the required strength, the mix with 25% laterite fell short. Increasing maximum coarse aggregate size led to higher strengths, with 40 mm sizes exhibiting the highest, and 12 mm the lowest. Compressive strengths ranged from 22.1 to 37.6 N/mm2, flexural strengths from 4.07 to 5.99 N/mm2 and split-tensile strengths from 2.93 to 4.30 N/mm2. This research highlights the need for meticulous mix design adjustments when using laterite, balancing workability with strength objectives. The developed regression models offer a valuable tool for predicting concrete properties based on mix parameters, providing insights for optimizing laterized concrete designs across diverse construction applications and supporting sustainable building practices.

Understanding the interplay between infections and severe acute malnutrition is critical in attaining good clinical outcomes when managing malnourished children. However, review studies describing the profile of the associated pathogens in the malnourished African paediatric population are sparse in the literature. We aimed to identify the spectrum of pathogens from studies reporting infections in severely malnourished African children, as well as the antibiotic resistance pattern and clinical outcomes. A systematic literature review of the PubMed database was conducted following PRISMA guidelines from January 2001 to June 2024. The search algorithm was ((marasmus) OR (kwashiorkor) OR (severe acute malnutrition) OR (protein energy malnutrition)) AND (Africa). For a more comprehensive retrieval, an additional search algorithm was deployed: ((HIV) OR (tuberculosis)) AND (severe acute malnutrition). We included 60 studies conducted between 2001 and 2024. Most of the studies were from East Africa (n = 45, 75%) and Southern Africa (n = 5, 8.3%). A total of 5845 pathogens were identified comprising 2007 viruses, 2275 bacteria, 1444 parasites, and 119 fungal pathogens. The predominant pathogens were HIV, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and malaria parasites accounting for 33.8%, 30%, and 24.2% of pathogens identified. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was documented in only three studies. Fatality rates were reported in 45 studies and ranged from 2% to 56% regardless of the category of pathogen. This review affirms the deleterious effect of infections in malnourished patients and suggests a gross underdiagnosis as studies were found from only 17 (31.5%) African countries. Moreover, data on fungal infections in severely malnourished African children were nearly absent despite this population being at risk. Thus, there is an urgent need to prioritize research investigating African children with severe acute malnutrition for fungal infections besides other pathogens and improve the availability of diagnostic tools and the optimized usage of antibiotics through the implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programmes.
