Abstract

Quantum supervised learning, utilizing variational circuits, stands out as a promising technology for NISQ devices due to its efficiency in hardware resource utilization during the creation of quantum feature maps and the implementation of hardware-efficient ansatz with trainable parameters. Despite these advantages, the training of quantum models encounters challenges, notably the barren plateau phenomenon, leading to stagnation in learning during optimization iterations. This study proposes an innovative approach: an evolutionary-enhanced ansatz-free supervised learning model. In contrast to parametrized circuits, our model employs circuits with variable topology that evolves through an elitist method, mitigating the barren plateau issue. Additionally, we introduce a novel concept, the superposition of multi-hot encodings, facilitating the treatment of multi-classification problems. Our framework successfully avoids barren plateaus, resulting in enhanced model accuracy. Comparative analysis with variational quantum classifiers from the technology's state-of-the-art reveal a substantial improvement in training efficiency and precision. Furthermore, we conduct tests on a challenging dataset class, traditionally problematic for conventional kernel machines, demonstrating a potential alternative path for achieving quantum advantage in supervised learning for NISQ era.

Abstract

The paper deals with the concept of nation, or Czechness, in the views of the poet, theoretician and artist Karel Hlaváček (1874–1898). In the mid-nineties of the 19th century, Hlaváček belonged to the inner circle around the magazine Moderní revue. In this environment, issues related to national identity, especially in the field of art and culture, but also in the political and social context, were often discussed. At that time, however, Hlaváček was also active in the Sokol association, whose national, i.e. Czech, dimension was not negligible. The texts he published in the Sokol press often differed significantly from those in the pages of Moderní revue, even in terms of the concept of the nation. The difference between the well-known text Nacionalism a internationalism (Moderní revue, December 1896) and his extensive study of Sokol as a social movement, which he published a few months later in the magazine Sokol (October 1897), is absolutely crucial. Hlaváček’s views will be placed in the broader intellectual context of European decadent art.

Abstract

Effective feature selection is essential for enhancing the performance of artificial intelligence models. It involves identifying feature combinations that optimize a given metric, but this is a challenging task due to the problem's exponential time complexity. In this study, we present an innovative heuristic called Evolutionary Quantum Feature Selection (EQFS) that employs the Quantum Circuit Evolution (QCE) algorithm. Our approach harnesses the unique capabilities of QCE, which utilizes shallow depth circuits to generate sparse probability distributions. Our computational experiments demonstrate that EQFS can identify good feature combinations with quadratic scaling in the number of features. To evaluate EQFS's performance, we counted the number of times a given classical model assesses the cost function for a specific metric, as a function of the number of generations.

Abstract

For a finite connected graph $\mathcal{E}$ with set of edges $E$, a finite $E$-generated group $G$ is constructed such that the set of relations $p=1$ satisfied by $G$ (with $p$ a word over $E\cup E^{-1}$) is closed under deletion of generators (i.e.~edges). As a consequence, every element $g\in G$ admits a unique minimal set $\mathrm{C}(g)$ of edges (the \emph{content} of $g$) needed to represent $g$ as a word over $\mathrm{C}(g)\cup\mathrm{C}(g)^{-1}$. The crucial property of the group $G$ is that connectivity in the graph $\mathcal{E}$ is encoded in $G$ in the following sense: if a word $p$ forms a path $u\longrightarrow v$ in $\mathcal{E}$ then there exists a $G$-equivalent word $q$ which also forms a path $u\longrightarrow v$ and uses only edges from their content; in particular, the content of the corresponding group element $[p]_G=[q]_G$ spans a connected subgraph of $\mathcal{E}$ containing the vertices $u$ and $v$. As an application it is shown that every finite inverse monoid admits a finite $F$-inverse cover. Abstract

BRICS is a significant player in the international arena. Thus, it is important for South Africa as a member of BRICS to explore the implications of the external and internal influences of BRICS. This includes comprehensive understanding of the international and national involvement of BRICS in education provision and introducing discovered influences in South African educational planning. The size of BRICS as international player, in different areas and on different levels, necessitates the research of its functioning and in this case the role of BRICS regarding education provisioning. Therefore, this research and analysis of the contribution of BRICS in education provision are an important addition to the field of effective Education. Through the preliminary literature reviews, we noticed that current studies often are quantitative in nature and lack comparative qualitative exploration about education development in BRICS countries. For this reason, the book titled BRICS Education: A new dawn, will contribute to the flourishment of quality education in South Africa and all BRICS nations. The book will also aim to encourage researchers to join efforts with other researchers of the five member states in order to learn from each other and to address common challenges. To that end, this research will generate scientific knowledge meant to maximize the readers, understanding of the current realities of the education aims at the national (each member state) and collective (BRICS organization) level. The authors of the book are interested in comparing the educational aims across the BRICS countries and explore how successfully these aims are being implemented on-the-ground. Through the discovering of similarities and differences in the educational aims of the five member states and the educational objectives of the BRICS-organization the readers of the book will be able to identify best practices that will allow member states to fulfill the education aims of the BRICS organization at large.

Abstract Background High dose unilobar radioembolization (also termed ‘radiation lobectomy’)—the transarterial unilobar infusion of radioactive microspheres as a means of controlling tumour growth while concomitantly inducing future liver remnant hypertrophy—has recently gained interest as induction strategy for surgical resection. Abstract

Graphene-based photodetectors have shown responsivities up to 10$^8$A/W and photoconductive gains up to 10$^{8}$ electrons per photon. These photodetectors rely on a highly absorbing layer in close proximity of graphene, which induces a shift of the graphene chemical potential upon absorption, hence modifying its channel resistance. However, due to the semi-metallic nature of graphene, the readout requires dark currents of hundreds of $\mu$A up to mA, leading to high power consumption needed for the device operation. Here we propose a novel approach for highly responsive graphene-based photodetectors with orders of magnitude lower dark current levels. A shift of the graphene chemical potential caused by light absorption in a layer of colloidal quantum dots, induces a variation of the current flowing across a metal-insulator-graphene diode structure. Owing to the low density of states of graphene near the neutrality point, the light-induced shift in chemical potential can be relatively large, dramatically changing the amount of current flowing across the insulating barrier, and giving rise to a novel type of gain mechanism. This readout requires dark currents of hundreds of nA up to few $\mu$A, orders of magnitude lower than other graphene-based photodetectors, while keeping responsivities of $\sim$70A/W in the infrared, almost two orders of magnitude higher compared to established germanium on silicon and indium gallium arsenide infrared photodetectors. Abstract

The prospects of using nanofilms of indium-containing III-V semiconductors, gold and single-layer graphene in magnetic field sensors, intended for application in radiation environment were evaluated on the results of testing in neutron fluxes. Semiconductor sensors are capable of withstanding radiation levels typical for the ITER-type fusion reactors, while gold sensors are stable even under environment expected in the first fusion power plant DEMO. Graphene is promising for creating sensors that combine high magnetic field sensitivity and high irradiation resistance.

Abstract

An in-situ study of Hall sensors based on single-layered graphene in neutron fluxes of a nuclear reactor to the fluence of 1.5e20 n/sq,m was conducted. The sensitivity of the sensors to the magnetic field remained stable throughout the experiment, while the resistance changes correlated with the increase in sample temperature due to radiation heating. The experiment confirmed the theoretical expectations regarding the high stability of graphene sensors to neutron irradiation. Necessary further improvement of sensor technology to optimize their characteristics, as well as radiation testing to determine the maximum permissible neutron fluence.

Abstract

Quantum two-level systems interacting with the surroundings are ubiquitous in nature. The interaction suppresses quantum coherence and forces the system towards a steady state. Such dissipative processes are captured by the paradigmatic spin-boson model, describing a two-state particle, the "spin", interacting with an environment formed by harmonic oscillators. A fundamental question to date is to what extent intense coherent driving impacts a strongly dissipative system. Here we investigate experimentally and theoretically a superconducting qubit strongly coupled to an electromagnetic environment and subjected to a coherent drive. This setup realizes the driven Ohmic spin-boson model. We show that the drive reinforces environmental suppression of quantum coherence, and that a coherent-to-incoherent transition can be achieved by tuning the drive amplitude. An out-of-equilibrium detailed balance relation is demonstrated. Abstract

Summary: Here we extend the understanding of how chemical inhibition of SHIP paralogs controls obesity. We compare different classes of SHIP inhibitors and find that selective inhibitors of SHIP1 or SHIP2 are unable to prevent weight gain and body fat accumulation during increased caloric intake. Surprisingly, only pan-SHIP1/2 inhibitors (pan-SHIPi) prevent diet-induced obesity. We confirm that pan-SHIPi is essential by showing that dual treatment with SHIP1 and SHIP2 selective inhibitors reduced adiposity during excess caloric intake. Consistent with this, genetic inactivation of both SHIP paralogs in eosinophils or myeloid cells also reduces obesity and adiposity. In fact, pan-SHIPi requires an eosinophil compartment to prevent diet-induced adiposity, demonstrating that pan-SHIPi acts via an immune mechanism. We also find that pan-SHIPi increases ILC2 cell function in aged, obese mice to reduce their obesity. Finally, we show that pan-SHIPi also reduces hyperglycemia, but not via eosinophils, indicating a separate mechanism for glucose control.
