1. Imparting the Skills Employers Seek: Community-Engaged Learning as Career Preparation

Abstract

This paper explores the potential for postsecondary community-based educational experiences to impart the skills employers most desire from new college graduates. We gathered one U.S. university's community-engaged learning (CEL) stakeholders to collect detailed descriptions of the behaviors students practice during CEL. Students, faculty, and community partner participants had at least one semester of service-learning or nonprofit internship experience coordinated by the university's Center for Community Work and Learning. Qualitative responses generated from 46 participants were coded and then compared to the top skills business executives and hiring managers reported in 2018 as priorities for new college graduates. Data analysis yielded clearer understanding of the intersection between career readiness and CEL, as well as a potential tool to aid students in better articulating the skills they gain from CEL to future employers.

Abstract

Objective: We update and expand our 2010 article in this journal, Patient safety in dermatology: A review of the literature [4][DH1]. Methods: PubMed at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) was searched September 2019 for English language articles published between 2009 and 2019 concerning patient safety and medical error in dermatology. Potentially relevant articles and communications were critically evaluated by the authors with selected references from 2020 added to include specific topics: medication errors, diagnostic errors including telemedicine, office-based surgery, wrong-site procedures, infections including COVID-19, falls, laser safety, scope of practice, and electronic health records. Summary: Hospitals and clinics are adopting the methods of high-reliability organizations to identify and change ineffective practice patterns. Although systems issues are emphasized in patient safety, people are critically important to effective teamwork and leadership. Advancements in procedural and cosmetic dermatology, organizational and clinical guidelines, and the revolution in information technology and electronic health records have introduced new sources of potential error. Conclusion: Despite the growing number of dermatologic patient safety studies, our review supports a continuing need for further studies and reports to reduce the number of preventable errors and provide optimal care.

7. Galactic S Stars: Investigations of Color, Motion, and Spectral Features

Abstract

Known bright S stars, recognized as such by their enhanced s-process abundances and C/O ratio, are typically members of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) or the red giant branch (RGB). Few modern digital spectra for these objects have been published, from which intermediate resolution spectral indices and classifications could be derived. For published S stars we find accurate positions using the Two-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and use the FAST spectrograph of the Tillinghast reflector on Mt. Hopkins to obtain the spectra of 57 objects. We make available a digital S star spectral atlas consisting of 14 spectra of S stars with diverse spectral features. We define and derive basic spectral indices that can help distinguish S stars from late-type (M) giants and carbon stars. We convolve all our spectra with the SDSS bandpasses, and employ the resulting gri magnitudes together with 2MASS JHK mags to investigate S star colors. S stars have colors similar to carbon and M stars, and are therefore difficult to distinguish by color alone. Using near and mid-infrared colors from IRAS and AKARI, we identify some of the stars as intrinsic (AGB) or extrinsic (with abundances enhanced by past mass-transfer). We also use V band and 2MASS magnitudes to calculate a temperature index for stars in the sample. We analyze the proper motions and parallaxes of our sample stars to determine upper and lower limit absolute magnitudes and distances, and confirm that most are probably giants., Comment: 11 pages. 12. Creation of a Dynamic Risk Ranking Methodology for Multiple Storm Events and its Application to the City of Edmonton

Abstract

Globally, municipalities have been experiencing flooding events caused by riverine, coastal, or urban flooding and have applied both many and varied mitigation measures. In most flood mitigation cases, financial investment for mitigation improvements was approved post flooding. This reactive rather than proactive approach tended to focus mainly on financial consequences. This thesis is based on the risk ranking methodology that was part of EPCOR’s Stormwater Integrated Resources Planning that was created for the City of Edmonton as part of their flood management plan. It utilizes a grid-based risk methodology of likelihood and consequence events to determine investment focus. This provides direction in order to mitigate flood damage before a severe weather event causing property loss and/or impacts in a community. Rather than flood mitigation projects initiated solely on a financial cost benefit basis, Health and Safety, Environment, and Social factors were also included in the grid to generate a multi-faceted consequence approach. Climate change is causing severity and frequency of storm events to increase, which are effects that are also considered within the risk determination. This is a disaggregated approach to assessing risk and has the ability to identify and implement incremental improvements as the study area changes. The risk assessment framework was formulated and applied to the City of Edmonton’s watershed and sewershed basins and validated with past known flooding events. The results were then applied to a Geospatial map of the City of Edmonton to provide a mapping representation of the risk throughout the City. The visual representation provided users a tool to prioritize future areas for flood mitigation programs. The dynamic capability allows for the user to apply flood mitigation projects to the study area and see the risk difference it would provide before it is physically implemented. Through the dedication of regular updates and the ability to add new risk criteria the model is a continuously evolving risk model.
