Potential energy curves allow us to probe the flexibility of butyl acrylate molecule. We found two local minima belonging to C s symmetry for s-cis and s-trans conformations. The optimized geometries at RHF and DFT using extended basis set are in good agreement with electron diffraction data of methyl acrylate, and the s-cis is the most stable form. Ab initio calculations of harmonic frequencies at the fully optimized geometries of the planar s-cis and s-trans conformers have been performed at the DFT//B3LYP/6-311+G** level of theory. Scaled harmonic frequencies and potential energy distribution are used for the assignment of the experimental IR and Raman bands. We noticed an acceptable qualitative agreement between the experimental and the computed spectra.

Aim Butyl methacrylate is used with acrylic products in order to improve the final product according to the desired characteristics. In this work we are about to make an assignment of experimental infrared bands with the help of a theoretical quantum chemistry calculations. The exact knowledge of some bands which are not characteristics of acrylic materials will enable us to make a quick analysis with available techniques of low costs for mixtures of polymers based on acrylate and methacrylate molecules. Materials and methods In the experimental part, the infrared spectrum of butyl methacrylate is obtained by using an FTIR Perkin Elmer model 2000. In the computational part and as first step, the theoretical calculations are performed by the semi-empirical AM1 method for excluding similar structures of butyl methacrylate molecule by a meticulous conformational analysis. As a second step the obtained structures are optimized using DFT. The simulated frequencies are then scaled and a tentative assignment is made based on band intensities and PED percentages. Results The theoretical calculations predict the existence of five conformations two of them represent the majority of experimental bands in the infrared spectrum. The two less stable structures represent better the band at 546 cm−1, while the assignment is very difficult for the band at 491 cm−1.

International audience; The butyl acrylate and butyl methacrylate were optimized by seven functionals. All the structures found are local minima and belong to the Cs symmetry. The calculated frequencies are scaled and ranked according to their square errors. The scaling factors of the B972 and B98 functionals fail to reproduce the infrared spectra. The calculated and scaled frequencies with G96LYP, OLYP, and HCTH functionals give acceptable correlations with the experimental spectra. The scaling factors for O3LYP/6-31G(f,p) and O3LYP/6-311+G(df,p) levels of theory reproduce very well the infrared spectrum of butyl acrylate, and the scaled frequencies at VSXC functional with Pople’s double zeta basis sets show the best accuracy in the case of butyl methacrylate.

The Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate have been measured in liquid phase. The molecular geometry, vibrational frequencies, and infrared intensities have been calculated by using density functional theory. We found two local minima representing s-cis and s-trans conformations for 2-ethylhexyl acrylate molecule. The optimized geometries at DFT//B3LYP/6-311+ are in good agreement with electron diffraction data of methyl acrylate for the acrylic group. The two conformers were used for the interpretation of the experimental infrared spectrum of title compound. PED calculations are represented for a more complete and concise assignment. There is one band in the infrared spectrum at 1646 cm−1 that definitely indicates the conformer with s-trans arrangement of acrylic moiety to be present or not in the liquid 2-ethylhexyl acrylate.

A conformational search of the flexible 2-hedroxyethyl methacrylate molecule by semi-empirical AM1 and B3LYP formalisms leads to six stable conformations. Four of them are in the s-trans conformation. The optimized geometries at DFT using 6-311+G(∗∗) basis set are in good agreement with experimental electron diffraction data of the methyl methacrylate molecule, thereby the s-trans is the most stable form. The harmonic frequencies at the fully optimized geometries of all conformers have been performed at the DFT//B3LYP/6-311+G(∗∗) level of theory. Infrared and Raman intensities and potential energy distributions of the scaled harmonic frequencies are used for the assignment of the observed IR and Raman bands. We noticed a good agreement between the experimental and the computed spectra. The strong band at 1081 cm(-1), in the infrared spectrum, maybe used as a characteristic band of the s-trans conformation. Henceforth, the less stable structure contribute alone for reproducing the Raman bands located at 276 (sh) and 3020 (vw) cm(-1).

The most stable conformation of title molecule was found after a careful potential energy surfaces study. Themolecular geometry, vibrational frequencies, and infrared intensities have been calculated by using ab initio HF and densityfunctional theory calculation B3LYP with 6-311+G∗∗ basis set. Scaled frequencies and potential energy distribution were calculatedfor band assignment. We found an excellent agreement between the experimental and the simulated spectra. Energy gap betweenHOMO and LUMO explains the eventual charge transfer interactions taking place within the molecule.
