Abstract

A new experiment has been set up at the Paul Scherrer Institut to search for muonium to antimuonium conversion. No event was found to fulfil the requested signature which consists of the coincident detection of both constituents of the antiatom in its decay. Assuming an effective (V-A)$\times$(V-A) type interaction an improved upper limit is established for the conversion probability of ${\rm P_{M\bar{M}}} \leq 8 \cdot 10^{-9}$ (90%C.L.), which is almost two orders of magnitude lower compared to previous results and provides a sensitive test for theoretical extensions of the standard model.

Abstract

The OMI instrument is an ultraviolet-visible imaging spectrograph that uses two-dimensional CCD detectors to register both the spectrum and the swath perpendicular to the flight direction with a 115° wide swath, which enables global daily ground coverage with high spatial resolution. This paper presents a selection of in-flight radiometric and CCD detector calibration and performance monitoring results since the launch in July 2004. From these examples it will be shown that OMI is performing very well after more than four years in orbit. It is shown how the OMI irradiance measurement data have been used to derive a high resolution solar reference spectrum with good radiometric calibration, good wavelength calibration and high spectral sampling. The surface reflectance climatology derived from three years of in-orbit OMI measurement data is presented and discussed. The OMI mission may possibly be extended in 2009 for another two or four years, depending on the performance of the instrument. By 2013-2014 OMI on EOS-Aura and SCIAMACHY on ENVISAT will have reached more that twice their anticipated lifetimes. In order to guarantee continuity of Earth atmosphere tropospheric and climate measurement data new instrumentation shall be available around that time. A successor of OMI and SCIAMACHY, named TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI), scheduled for launch by the end of 2013, is discussed in this paper.

Abstract

We conducted a survey regarding the medical care of patients with dementia in expert settings in Belgium. Open, unrestricted and motivated answers were centralized, blindly interpreted and structured into categories. The report of the results was then submitted to the participants in subsequent plenary meetings and through email. Fourteen experts responded to the questionnaire, confirming that recent propositions to modify Alzheimer’s disease (AD) diagnostic criteria and options have stirred up debate among well-informed and dedicated experts in the field. The opinions were not unanimous and illustrate how difficult it is to find a standardized method of diagnosing this disease. The responses to the survey suggest that application of a step-by-step pragmatic method is used in practice. Only when the combination of clinical findings and classical structural neuro-imaging is insufficient for a diagnosis or suggests an atypical presentation, additional biomarkers are considered. Interestingly, few differences, if any, were observed between the use of biomarkers in MCI and in AD. In conclusion, the Belgian experts consulted in this survey were generally in agreement with the new diagnostic criteria for AD, although some concern was expressed about them being too “amyloidocentric”. Abstract

The ESA (European Space Agency) Sentinel-5 Precursor (S-5 P) is a low Earth orbit polar satellite to provide information and services on air quality, climate and the ozone layer in the timeframe 2015-2022. The S-5 P mission is part of the Global Monitoring of the Environment and Security (GMES) Space Component Programme. The payload of the mission is the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) that will measure key atmospheric constituents including ozone, NO2, SO2, CO, CH4, CH2O and aerosol properties. TROPOMI has heritage to both the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) as well as to the SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CartograpHY (SCIAMACHY). The S-5 P will extend the data records of these missions as well as be a preparatory mission for the Sentinel-5 mission planned for 2020 onward. The mission is pre-operational and is the link between the current scientific and the operational Sentinel-4/-5 missions. This contribution describes the science and mission objectives, the mission and the instrument, and the data products. While building on a solid foundation of the heritage instruments, the S-5P/TROPOMI mission is an exciting step forward with a strong focus on the troposphere. This is achieved by a combination of a high spatial resolution and improved signal-to-noise, as well as dedicated data product development. It is anticipated that the S-5 P mission will make a large contribution to the monitoring of the global atmospheric composition, as well as to the scientific knowledge of relevant atmospheric processes. © 2012 Elsevier Inc.

De haagbeuk, Carpinus, is een bescheiden figuur onder de loofbomen. Hij wordt in Nederland zelden hoger dan 20 meter en is een bladverliezende, meestal meerstammige boom. Omdat Carpinus een schaduwminnende soort is, tref je hem veelal als onderbeplantingen aan in bossen. Hij houdt van een voedselrijk, vochtige bodem maar groeit zonder vervelende gevolgen ook op minder geschikte grond.

Abstract

The Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) is being developed for launch in 2014 on GMES Sentinel 5 Precursor satellite. Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) is a joint initiative of the European Community (EC) and of the European Space Agency (ESA). TROPOMI is a passive sun backscatter spectrograph using the ultraviolet-to-SWIR wavelengths to have good sensitivity down to the surface. Together with its spatial resolution of 7 x 7 km2 it allows good observations of sources and sinks of air quality and climate related gases and aerosols. This spatial resolution results in a high fraction of cloud-free observations and is combined with a wide cross-flight swath to allow daily coverage of the complete Earth. The instrument has as predecessors the OMI instrument (Ozone Monitoring Instrument) on NASAs AURA satellite and the SCIAMACHY instrument on ESAs ENVISAT, where the push broom concept is derived from OMI and the SWIR observations from SCIAMACHY. The wavelength bands of TROPOMI are a UV band (270 - 320 nm) for the ozone profile and SO2 products, a UVIS band (320 - 500 nm) for O3, NO2, BrO, HCHO and OClO total columns, a NIR band (675 - 775 nm) for clouds and H2O columns and a SWIR band (2305 - 2385 nm) for CH 4 and CO columns and the HDO/H2O ratio. The paper will give an overview of the challenges and current performances. The TROPOMI UVN module is funded by the Netherlands and the SWIR module and platform is provided via ESA. The instrument development is now a truly European programme with contributions from several countries. © 2011 SPIE.
