The deformation behaviour of the intermetallic Al$_{2}$Cu-phase was investigated using atomistic simulations and micropillar compression, where slip on the unexpected {211} and {022} slip planes was revealed. Additionally, all possible slip systems for the intermetallic phases were further evaluated and a preference for the activation of slip systems based on their effective interplanar distances as well as the effective Burgers vector is proposed. The effective interplanar distance corresponds to the manually determined interplanar distance, whereas the effective Burgers vector takes a potential dislocation dissociation into account. This new order is: {211}1/2<111>, {022}1/2<111> and {022}<100>, {110}<001>, {310}<001>, {022}<011>, {110}1/2<111>, {112}<110> and {112}1/2<111> from high to low ratio of deff/beff. The method of neutron imaging was adopted to map the concentration evolution of aqueous paramagnetic Gd(NO3)3 solutions. Magnetic manipulation of the paramagnetic liquid within a miscible nonmagnetic liquid is possible by countering density-difference driven convection. We describe a new sensitive method for the investigation of weakly magnetic films placed inside a tri-layer planar waveguide. Polarized neutrons tunnel into the waveguide through the surface, channel along the layers and are emitted from the end face as a narrow and slightly divergent microbeam. Polarization analysis permits to detect very small magnetization in the order of a few 10 Gauss. The magnetic film containing the rare-earth element Tb was investigated using both fixed wavelength and time-of-flight polarized neutron reflectometers. Neutron planar waveguides are focusing devices generating a narrow neutron beam of submicron width. Such a neutron microbeam can be used for the investigation of local microstructures with high spatial resolution. The essential parameter of the microbeam is its angular width. The main contribution to the microbeam angular divergence is Fraunhofer diffraction on a narrow slit. We investigate neutron propagation in a middle layer of a planar waveguide which is a tri-layer thin film. A narrow divergent microbeam emitted from the end face of the film is registered. The neutron channeling length is experimentally measured as a function of the guiding channel width. The Zeeman spatial splitting of a neutron beam takes place during a neutron spin-flip in magnetically non-collinear systems at grazing incidence geometry. We apply the neutron beam-splitting method for the investigation of magnetically non-collinear clusters of submicron size in a thin film. We present and apply a new method to measure directly weak magnetization in thin films. The polarization of a neutron beam channeling through a thin film structure is measured after exiting the structure edge as a microbeam. We have applied the method to a tri-layer thin film structure acting as a planar waveguide for polarized neutrons. The middle guiding layer is a rare earth based ferrimagnetic material TbCo5 with a low magnetization of about 20 mT. We demonstrate that the channeling method is more sensitive than the specular neutron reflection method.

We review different neutron methods which allow extracting directly the value of the magnetic induction in thick films: Larmor precession, Zeeman spatial beam-splitting and neutron spin resonance. Resulting parameters obtained by the neutron methods and standard magnetometry technique are presented and compared. The possibilities and specificities of the neutron methods are discussed.

The integral cross section of the $^{12}$C($n,p$)$^{12}$B reaction has been determined for the first time in the neutron energy range from threshold to several GeV at the n_TOF facility at CERN. The measurement relies on the activation technique, with the $\beta$-decay of $^{12}$B measured over a period of four half-lives within the same neutron bunch in which the reaction occurs. The results indicate that model predictions, used in a variety of applications, are mostly inadequate. We present the use of planar waveguides to produce neutron microbeams in order to investigate magnetic micro-structures with a micrometric spatial resolution. We report experimental results on such measurements on a polarized neutron reflectometer using a nonmagnetic waveguide structure to probe an amorphous magnetic microwire. The spin-resolved transmission of a neutron microbeam through a microwire was studied. We present the fabrication of metallic magnetic nanowires using a low temperature chemical process. We show that pressed powders and magnetically oriented samples exhibit a very high coercivity (6.5 kOe at 140 K and 4.8 kOe at 300 K). We discuss the magnetic properties of these metamaterials and show that they have the suitable properties to realize "high temperature magnets" competitive with AlNiCo or SmCo permanent magnets. We have combined neutron scattering and piezoresponse force microscopy to study the relation between the exchange bias observed in CoFeB/BiFeO3 heterostructures and the multiferroic domain structure of the BiFeO3 films. We show that the exchange field scales with the inverse of the ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic domain size, as expected from Malozemoff's model of exchange bias extended to multiferroics. Accordingly, polarized neutron reflectometry reveals the presence of uncompensated spins in the BiFeO3 film at the interface with the CoFeB. In view of these results we discuss possible strategies to switch the magnetization of a ferromagnet by an electric field using BiFeO3., Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett

The alpha-beta magneto-structural phase transition in MnAs/GaAs(111) epilayers is investigated by elastic neutron scattering. The in-plane parameter of MnAs remains almost constant with temperature from 100 K to 420 K, following the thermal evolution of the GaAs substrate. This induces a temperature dependent biaxial strain that is responsible for an alpha-beta phase coexistence and, more important, for the stabilization of the ferromagnetic alpha-phase at higher temperature than in bulk. We explain the premature appearance of the beta-phase at 275 K and the persistence of the ferromagnetic alpha-phase up to 350 K with thermodynamical arguments based on the MnAs phase diagram. It results that the biaxial strain in the hexagonal plane is the key parameter to extend the ferromagnetic phase well over room temperature., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Magneto-resistance is a physical effect of great fundamental and industrial interest since it is the basis for the magnetic field sensors used in computer read-heads and Magnetic Random Access Memories. As device dimensions are reduced, some important physical length scales for magnetism and electrical transport will soon be attained. Ultimately, there is a strong need to know if the physical phenomena responsible for magneto-resistance still hold at the atomic scale. Here, we show that the anisotropy of magneto-resistance is greatly enhanced in atomic size constrictions. We explain this physical effect by a change in the electronic density of states in the junction when the magnetization is rotated, as supported by our ab-initio calculations. This stems from the "spin-orbit coupling" mechanism linking the shape of the orbitals with the spin direction.
