Purpose: This study aimed to identify the socio-demographic characteristics of Malaysia's current domestic residential electricity consumers, their attitude and expectations. Design/methodology/approach: The survey was conducted among consumers who are residents of Klang Valley. This study employed the frequency analysis, ranking method, and correlation analysis to describe the domestic residential consumers, to determine the favorable types of electrical appliances, and to measure the relationship between consumer awareness and consumer practice, respectively. Findings: The empirical results show that Malaysian domestic residential consumers in urban areas are dominated by working adults aged 21-30 years, and the purpose of utilizing the electricity is for lighting, comfort, and cooking purposes. The preferable reason when making a purchasing decision is the ability of electrical appliances to save energy. In terms of the correlation between consumer awareness and their practice; the result shows the significant and positive moderate relationship between the indicators mentioned above. Research limitations/implications: This study focuses on domestic residential consumers in Klang Valley, Malaysia (A pilot survey). Practical implications: This study provides a good understanding of consumer dynamic response to craft reliable and accurate policies, and subsequently to improve the efficient use of energy services in line with the sustainable energy agenda. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to review the past literature on financial development--environmental pollution nexus. Design/methodology/approach: 18 papers that specifically investigate the financial development--environmental pollution nexus was chosen and then tabulated in the form of literature matrix. The comparison has been made to determine similarity, inconsistency, and the gap in the literature. Findings: This finding suggested that the financial development-environmental pollution relationship are varies (remains mixed and controversial). Also, the controversial occur because each country faced a different stage of financial development. Research limitations/implications: Instead of focusing on financial development--environmental pollution nexus, this study narrowing the scope by selecting those with econometric based. Practical implications: By determining the gap, this study will open opportunities to develop the best fit model for accurate and reliable policy implication. The policy maker accelerates the R&D investment, speed up growth and hence affect the dynamic of environmental performance. Purpose: This paper investigates the impact of government expenditures (GSE) on the environmental quality proxy by carbon dioxide (C[O.sub.2]) emissions in Malaysia over the 1971-2019 period. Design/methodology/approach: The stochastic impacts by regression on population, affluence, and technology (STIRPAT) model in the Environmental Kuznet Curve (EKC) framework is utilized. The F-bound test is applied to assess the existence of the co-integration relationship, and the Autoregressive Distributed Lags (ARDL) model is used to measure the short-run and long-run environmental elasticities. Findings: Empirical results show the existence of co-integration relationship among CO2 emissions, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Malaysia's GSE. The findings provide strong support for the presence of the EKC in the case of Malaysia, but the GSE did not directly contribute to the reduction in C[O.sub.2] emissions. Research limitations/implications: Even the role of GSE on environmental sustainability can be tested in many approaches; this study focuses on assessing the direct impact of GSE. In the future, this study can be extended by measuring the role of GSE with a moderating role. Practical implications: These results highlight understanding that Malaysia is currently in the process towards environment sustainability due to the existence of the EKC hypothesis in Malaysia. However, the GSE is not directly contributed to environmental sustainability. As one of major component of GSE, this finding indicates that the government spending on education, and R&D did not function well in stimulating the level of productivity Originality/value: This study investigates the role of GSE by utilizing the STIRPAT and EKC framework, which is still in the infant stage for Malaysia. The uniqueness of this study holds due to dynamic analysis by assuming that the effect of GSE on CO2 emissions is not instantaneous.
