Abstract: The present research describes the complete life cycle in captivity, including spawning, larval culture and fattening of juveniles until commercial size. Additionally, size, weight and age at each moulting stage were recorded, as well as zoeas biochemical composition. The most significant results obtained were as follows. Embryonic development lasted for 33 days. Each female had between three and five spawns, separated by 4–5 days each. Larval culture lasted for 20 days at 14–17°C. The zoeas turn to megalopa at ~11 days after hatch/DAH), and from megalopa to juvenile at ~20 DAH. Average survival was ~13%. Juvenile growth rate was higher during the first 8 months (0.22%–0.46% bw/day), and then gradually decreased when changing from live to frozen diets. Survival during the fattening phase was 63%. The final moult occurs at 450 DAH, when males and females have a carapace total length of 12.38 + 1.23 and 13.57 + 1.23 cm, respectively, and 541.56 + 104.26 and 670.68 + 162.6 g in total weight respectively. Biochemical composition of cultured zoeas showed a high amount of phospholipids and long‐chain fatty acids, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and arachidonic acid (ARA). Low survival rates in larval culture and especially after passing to the benthic life style are the main problems regarding spider crab culture, and need to be improved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The School of Engineering at the Universidad Europea de Madrid (UEM) implemented a change in the pedagogical model applied in its degrees at the 2012/2013 period: the "Project Based Engineering School" (PBES). It consists on the application of the Project-Based Learning (PBL) methodology in at least several subjects each course in all its degrees. Each academic year, the students develop a capstone project covering partially the content of several subjects; faculty board and teachers were involved in the designing of a global framework and implementation adapted to each degree. How this process was made is explained in this paper. Positive results were obtained at the end of the first year that include further development of key skills, a deeper understanding of the specific skills and an increase on the motivation of students and teachers. There were also identified some areas for improvement for the coming years. This article will also show some of those results (both qualitative and quantitative) obtained after a year of experience from the students' point of view. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the time a new drug is placed on the market, information on its therapeutic effect and toxicity is limited. Because of its simplicity and widespread use, the voluntary reporting by clinical physicians is the main method for detecting rare or unexpected adverse drug events (ADEs). However, the usefulness of this method may be compromised if the reporting rate is low. We present the results of a questionnaire-based case-control study carried out among 692 physicians from Galicia (north-west region of Spain), in which we assessed their attitudes and opinions towards ADEs. In general, the Galician physicians think it is difficult to link a given ADE with a drug (P < 0.05) and have very heterogeneous opinions on the fact that very severe ADEs are known before the drug is commercialized. They globally disagree with the proposal that ADE reporting should be renumerated and the fact that ADE reporting can be risky for the physician. Some of the beliefs concerning ADEs are incorrect. Objective: Urinary lithiasis is a prevalent disease with a high socioeconomic impact, where endourological surgery has shown excellent results with minimal complications. For its part, outpatient surgery is an efficient, safe and quality care model. We present our experience in the outpatient endourological treatment of lithiasis and a review of the main series., Material and Methods: Prospective analysis of 85 flexible or percutaneous procedures for the treatment of lithiasis, carried out in our center between January 2021 and April 2022. The main objective was to analyze the rate of unplanned admission and the success and incidence of complications as secondary objectives. The patients were selected following the inclusion criteria of the care process., Results: The mean age was 56 ± 14 years. Urine culture was positive in 13.9% of the patients, 38% had a pre-surgical double-J catheter. Median stone surface was 55 mm 2 (961 ± 323 Hounsfield Units). 73 flexible and 12 percutaneous procedures were performed. 8 patients required immediate unplanned admission and another 2 during the first month. 94% were stone-free at the third month. No intraoperative complications were detected, although 16.5% of the patients presented some type of postoperative complication., Conclusion: In our experience, with a strict selection of patients and following a care process with multidisciplinary participation, endourological procedures are feasible and safe in the outpatient setting. Seasonal flu continues to be a major public health concern, and the influenza vaccine remains the most effective preventive measure. In Spain, vaccination coverage data from previous seasons show vaccination rates well below official targets; however, these figures improved significantly after the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the importance of achieving and maintaining high vaccination rates in order to avoid the clinical and economic impact of influenza, our multidisciplinary group of experts on vaccines analyzed the impact of low vaccination rates in Spain and drafted a series of measures to boost influenza vaccination coverage, particularly among priority groups., (©The Author 2022. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the level of health literacy of diabetic patients aged 50 to 75 years, from Ourense, Spain, as well as its relationship with the glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) concentration and cardiovascular risk of the patient., Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study using a self-completed questionnaire. From a multi-stage sampling, urban, type 2 diabetic patients were randomly included. The level of health literacy, using the HLS-EU-Q47 questionnaire, the last concentration of HbA1c, and both total and fatal cardiovascular risk at 10 year follow-up, measured using the UKPDS (U.K. Prospective Diabetes Study) algorithm, were determined. The age, gender, level of education, level of social support, social class, and comorbidities were used as covariates., Results: A total of 103 patients were analysed. Out of all the patients, 81.5% (84) had an unsuitable health literacy level (29.1% had an inadequate level and 52.4% had a problematic level). A clear association was seen between a higher level of health literacy and higher levels of education. Moreover, the level of health literacy was seen to be inversely related to the level of control of the patients' diabetes measured on the basis of their HbA1c (P=.03) concentration. The common octopus, Octopus vulgaris is a new candidate species for aquaculture. However, rearing of octopus paralarvae is hampered by high mortality and poor growth rates that impede its entire culture. The study of genes involved in the octopus development and immune response capability could help to understand the key of paralarvae survival and thus, to complete the octopus life cycle. Quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) is the most frequently tool used to quantify the gene expression because of specificity and sensitivity. However, reliability of RT-qPCR requires the selection of appropriate normalization genes whose expression must be stable across the different experimental conditions of the study. Hence, the aim of the present work is to evaluate the stability of six candidate genes: β-actin (ACT), elongation factor 1-α (EF), ubiquitin (UBI), β-tubulin (TUB), glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GADPH) and ribosomal RNA 18 (18S) in order to select the best reference gene. The stability of gene expression was analyzed using geNorm, NormFinder and Bestkeeper, in octopus paralarvae of seven developmental stages (embryo, paralarvae of 0, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 34days) and paralarvae of 20days after challenge with Vibrio lentus and Vibrio splendidus. The results were validated by measuring the expression of PGRP, a stimuli-specific gene. Our results showed UBI, EF and 18S as the most suitable reference genes during development of octopus paralarvae, and UBI, ACT and 18S for bacterial infection. Limited information is available on the burden and epidemiology of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) in Spain. The present report communicates the secular trends in prevalence of CDI among hospitalised patients in Spain from 1999 through 2007. Data were obtained through the EPINE study (Estudio de prevalencia de las infecciones nosocomiales en los hospitales españoles), a point prevalence study series of nosocomial infections among patients admitted to hospital in Spain. A total of 378 cases with CDI were identified. Median age was 74 years. Prevalence rates of CDI increased from 3.9 to 12.2 cases per 10,000 hospitalised patients and showed a significantly increasing secular trend from 1999 through 2007 (prevalence rate ratio per each year increment 1.09; 95% CI 1.05 - 1.14). Percentage of hospitalised patients receiving antimicrobials increased linearly from 36.0% in 1999 to 40.7% in 2007 (p <0.001) and was strongly correlated to CDI prevalence (R square = 0.73; regression coefficient =1.194, 95% CI= 1.192 - 1.196).

Diet is one of the elements that may influence the development of lung cancer. To ascertain the relationship between meat and fish consumption and the appearance of this disease, a case-control study was conducted on a population in Galicia (NW Spain), with a sample of 295 cases and 322 controls. All cases had histologic confirmation, and controls were individuals who were attending the hospital to undergo trivial surgery. All subjects were over 35, and sampling was based on sex frequency. Frequent consumption of meat seemed to have a protective effect, with an OR of 0.24 (95% CI 0.11-0.50), an effect that was maintained for pork consumption (OR 0.35; 95% CI 0.18-0.67). In contrast, consumption of fish showed an association with lung cancer, with an OR of 1.67 (95% CI 0.99-2.81), an association that extended to both white (OR 1.61 95% CI 0.93-2.79) and blue fish (OR 2.03 95% CI 1.23-3.34). Consumption of meat seems to reduce the risk of lung cancer, whereas consumption of fish could exert an influence by increasing the risk of this disease.

This paper is a critical review of studies of educational programmes designed to improve prescription practices in ambulatory care. Scientific articles were selected from the following bibliographical indices: MEDLINE, IME, ICYT and ERIC. The searches covered the time period between 1988 and 1997. The search criteria included: primary-care, educat*, prescription* and other related keywords. The inclusion criteria were studies describing educational strategies aimed at general practitioners working in ambulatory settings. The study outcome was change in prescribing behaviour of physicians through prescribing indicators. The following data were extracted: study design, target drugs, type of intervention, follow-up period of the prescription trends, type of data analysis, type of statistical analysis and reported results. We found 3233 articles that met the search criteria. Of these, 51 met the inclusion criteria and 43 studied the efficacy/effectiveness of one or various interventions as compared to no intervention. Among seven studies evaluating active strategies, four reported positive results (57%), as opposed to three of the eight studies assessing passive strategies (38%). Among the 28 studies that tested reinforced active strategies, 16 reported positive results for all variables (57%). Eight studies were classified as a high degree of evidence (16%). We concluded that the results of our review suggest that the more personalized, the more effective the strategies are. We observe that combining active and passive strategies results in a decrease of the failure rate. Finally, better studies are still needed to enhance the efficacy and efficiency of prescribing practices.

Objective: To identify factors associated with low prescription quality in primary care., Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study on a sample of 405 primary care physicians in Galicia (Northwest Spain). The following independent variables were collected through a mail questionnaire survey: physician's education and speciality, physician's perception of the quality of available drug information sources, type of practice and number of patients. We constructed multiple regression models using as dependent variables four indicators of the quality of drugs prescribed., Results: The response rate was 75.2%. The quality of drugs prescribed was found to be associated with regulated physician training (P = 0.001), perceived credibility of information sources (P = 0.013) and environmental characteristics of the practice (reform model and number of patients' cards)., Conclusion: Study results suggest that in order to improve the quality of drugs prescribed, physician education and training must be improved and the role of pharmaceutical companies in physician training should be limited, emphasising more objective sources of information, such as therapeutic guidelines. Our results also underline the need to complete the reform of our primary care system and promote better relationships among physicians and between physicians and patients.
