2. A Social-Ecological Model of Preschoolers' Aggressive Behavior: An Exploratory Analysis

Abstract

Understanding classroom-level correlates of preschool children's aggressive behavior is critical to identifying multiple avenues for intervention within schools. The present school-based study evaluated the reliability and validity of a classroom-level measure of physical and relational aggression and examined a social-ecological model to test whether individual variables (i.e., temperament), dyadic peer factors (i.e., peer victimization, the number of a child's play partners), and classroom-level aggression were associated with individual aggression. Observations of play partners and teacher reports of temperament (i.e., daring, prosociality, and negative emotionality), peer victimization (i.e., physical and relational victimization), and classroom aggression were collected in a sample of preschoolers (N = 307; M[subscript age] = 48.99 months, SD = 7.51). Observer reports of aggression were used to create aggression severity and directionality scores, reflecting the overall level of aggression a child displays and their propensity to use physical relative to relational aggression, respectively. There was evidence to support the reliability and validity of the classroom-level aggression measure providing initial support that this measure could be used by school psychologists. A multilevel regression model indicated that higher levels of negative emotionality, daring, and a greater number of play partners were associated with higher levels of aggression severity. Children in classrooms with more relational aggression were more likely to use relational instead of physical aggression. These findings demonstrate the importance for school psychologists to account for multiple levels of influence when examining preschoolers' aggression.

Abstract

Two possibly unfair $n$-sided dice, both labelled $1, 2, \ldots, n$, are rolled, and the sum is recorded. How should the dice's sides be weighted so that the resulting sum is closest to the uniform distribution on $2, 3, \ldots, 2n$? We answer this question by explicitly identifying the optimal pair of dice. This resolves a question raised by Gasarch and Kruskal in 1999 in a surprising way. 5. Prospective Relations of Temperament and Peer Victimization with Changes in Social Competence in Early Childhood: The Moderating Role of Executive Functioning

Abstract

Background: Early childhood is a key developmental period to assess social competence (SC) as experiences of peer interactions begin to accumulate. Past work suggests that temperament and forms of peer victimization (physical and relational) are independently associated with changes in SC, but less work has examined the differential effects of these factors. Objective: This school-based study examined how peer victimization and temperament influence changes in SC. Temperament was operationalized using Lahey and colleagues' (J Clin Child Adolesc Psychol, 37(4):794-807, 2008) developmental propensity model and was characterized as negative emotionality, prosociality, and daring. It was hypothesized that forms of peer victimization and negative emotionality would be inversely related, whereas prosociality would be positively related with SC. Prospective links with daring were exploratory. Hypotheses examined prospective relations with an overall SC latent variable and with its individual components (cooperation, social dominance, and positive peer interactions). Given its links with social development, executive functioning was thought to moderate these relations. Methods: The sample consisted of 300 preschoolers (M = 44.72 months old, 44% female, 62.1% White). Data was collected from multiple informants (i.e., behavioral observations, teacher-report, research assistant-report) across a 12-15-month span. Results: Negative emotionality was negatively associated with cooperation, and both negative emotionality and daring were positively associated with social dominance. Executive functioning did not moderate these associations. Conclusions: This study provides a nuanced approach to the study of SC by accounting for both dispositional and interpersonal effects on SC. Moreover, these findings highlight that development of SC may be better understood by examining its individual components.

6. The Role of Peer Victimization in Predicting Aggression and Internalizing Problems in Early Childhood: The Moderating Effect of Emotion Regulation and Gender

Abstract

Research Findings: This study (N = 300; M age = 44.72 months, SD = 4.39) aimed to elucidate the distinct pathways leading to maladjustment in early childhood by examining whether or not peer victimization differentially predicts aggression and internalizing problems. Hypotheses were guided by the relational vulnerability model, which suggests peer victimization and relational aggression have deleterious effects on socioemotional adjustment. This study was novel in its hypotheses that these effects will depend on form of victimization (physical/relational) and that emotion regulation and gender moderate the association. Information was collected through naturalistic observations and teacher-report, and analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results demonstrated that, across 12 months, relational victimization predicted increased anxiety symptoms, whereas relational aggression predicted decreased overall internalizing symptoms. Emotion regulation, but not gender, was concluded to be a significant moderator, where the effect of relational victimization on anxiety symptoms was significant for those with average to high emotion regulation skills. Practice & Policy: Examination of differential pathways leading to maladjustment in early childhood is critical, as early identification of risk factors, such as relational victimization, may improve developmental outcomes. Thus, this knowledge can be used by early childhood educators and providers in maximizing socioemotional adjustment across development.

7. Responses to Peer Victimization and Bullying in Early Childhood

Abstract

Little research has used in vivo, naturalistic observations to understand developmental processes related to bullying in early childhood. To test associations between how young children respond to experiences of peer victimization and changes in relational and physical bullying behaviors, a short-term longitudinal study using behavioral observations and teacher reports was conducted among 164 (84 females) preschool children (M = 47.76 months, SD = 7.41). Findings indicated that observed aggressive responses to school-based peer victimization was significantly associated with increases in teacher-reported relational bullying across the academic year. In addition, observed teacher reactions to peer victimization were significantly associated with increases in relational bullying across the academic year. The ways in which these findings extend the literature are discussed.

Abstract

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a chronic granulomatous vasculitis of medium and large arteries leading to cranial and extracranial manifestations. Temporal artery biopsy is considered the gold standard; however, its sensitivity is low at 47%. We report a unique case of Bing–Neel Syndrome (BNS) presenting as biopsy-proven GCA. BNS is a rare complication (1%) of Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia (WM), which results from infiltration of lymph plasmacytoid cells and plasma cells into the central nervous system. A 77-year-old female with a past medical history of glaucoma, hypertension, diabetes, and chronic ocular ischemic syndrome in her right eye presented with progressive left eye vision loss for 5 days. Fundoscopic examination was notable for pseudophakic pseudopallor but no optic disc edema. Intraocular pressure was >40 and normalized after acetazolamide. The patient was started on pulse dose steroids by her neuro-ophthalmologist. She was discharged home on 60 mg of prednisone. At follow up with her neuro-ophthalmologist, new dot blot hemorrhages in the left eye were noted and she was readmitted for pulse dose of intravenous methylprednisolone. Temporal artery biopsy was consistent with GCA spectrum. Work up revealed paraproteinemia and subsequent bone marrow biopsy demonstrated WM. The patient was treated for her WM and her ophthalmic complications stabilized.

Abstract

There is an urgent need to identify therapies that prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and improve the outcome of COVID-19 patients. Although repurposed drugs with favorable safety profiles could have significant benefit, widely available prevention or treatment options for COVID-19 have yet to be identified. Efforts to identify approved drugs with in vitro activity against SARS-CoV-2 resulted in identification of antiviral sigma-1 receptor ligands, including antihistamines in the histamine-1 receptor binding class. We identified antihistamine candidates for repurposing by mining electronic health records of usage in population of more than 219,000 subjects tested for SARS-CoV-2. Usage of diphenhydramine, hydroxyzine and azelastine was associated with reduced incidence of SARS-CoV-2 positivity in subjects greater than age 61. We found diphenhydramine, hydroxyzine and azelastine to exhibit direct antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 in vitro. Although mechanisms by which specific antihistamines exert antiviral effects is not clear, hydroxyzine, and possibly azelastine, bind Angiotensin Converting Enzyme-2 (ACE2) and the sigma-1 receptor as off-targets. Clinical studies are needed to measure the effectiveness of diphenhydramine, hydroxyzine and azelastine for disease prevention, for early intervention, or as adjuvant therapy for severe COVID-19.
