We conducted a multi-wavelength campaign to study the near-Earth asteroid (NEA) 2100 Ra-Shalom during its August 2003 encounter. Rotationally resolved observations were acquired at Arecibo (12.6 cm radar), the IRTF (0.8-2.5 micron and 3 micron), McDonald Observatory (0.48-0.92 micron), Palomar Observatory (8-15 micron), and Ondrejov Observatory (optical lightcurves). Our objectives were to determine Ra-Shalom's size and shape, and the composition and physical state of its near-surface material. Preliminary results from radar and lightcurve measurements will be presented here.

Radar ranging from Arecibo, Puerto Rico, to the 0.5-kilometer near-Earth asteroid 6489 Golevka unambiguously reveals a small nongravitational acceleration caused by the anisotropic thermal emission of absorbed sunlight. The magnitude of this perturbation, known as the Yarkovsky effect, is a function of the asteroid's mass and surface thermal characteristics. Direct detection of the Yarkovsky effect on asteroids will help constrain their physical properties, such as bulk density, and refine their orbital paths.

Deep Interior is a mission to determine the geophysical properties of near-Earth objects, including the first volumetric image of the interior of an asteroid. Radio reflection tomography will image the 3D distribution of complex dielectric properties within the ~1 km rendezvous target and hence map structural, density or compositional variations. Laser altimetry and visible imaging will provide high-resolution surface topography. Smart surface pods culminating in blast experiments, imaged by the high frame rate camera and scanned by lidar, will characterize active mechanical behavior and structure of surface materials, expose unweathered surface for NIR analysis, and may enable some characterization of bulk seismic response. Multiple flybys en route to this target will characterize a diversity of asteroids, probing their interiors with non-tomographic radar reflectance experiments. Deep Interior is a natural follow-up to the NEARShoemaker mission and will provide essential guidance for future in situ asteroid and comet exploration. While our goal is to learn the interior geology of small bodies and how their surfaces behave, the resulting science will enable pragmatic technologies required of hazard mitigation and resource utilization.

Scenarios for mitigation of asteroid comet collisions include the use of explosives to deflect or destroythe projectile. However, as demonstrated by Asphaug et al.( 1998), the outcome of explosive energy transfer to an asteroid or comet (via a bomb or a hypervelocity impact) is extremely sensitive to the pre-existing configuration of fractures and voids.

The Arecibo 12.6 cm radar system was used to observe Titan in 1999, 2000 and 2001. The mean value of the radar albedo is 0.16 and the polarization ratio is 0.35. For some longitudes the echo has a specular component although most of the echo power is contained in a diffuse component. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

The radar instruments at Arecibo and Goldstone recently provided the first confirmed discoveries of binary asteroids in the near-Earth population. The physical and orbital properties of four near-Earth binary systems are described in detail. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

This talk will use images, movies, and radar-derived three-dimensional models to present recent highlights of asteroid radar research, concentrating on low-V mission candidates. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

Characterization of the rotation state and structure of near-Earth asteroids through radar observations using the Arecibo and Goldstone planetary radar systems shows the remarkable variety of these objects, and suggests variety of formation and modification mechanisms. Radar is a powerful source of information about the physical and dynamical properties of solar system bodies. Radar-detected targets include the Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Phobos, Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, Titan, Iapetus, Saturn's rings, eight comets, and 179 asteroids (75 main-belt and 104 near-Earth). This talk offers a perspective on the disc-integrated radar properties of solar system bodies and then turns to what radar remote sensing can tell us about asteroids using spatially-resolved measurements.

Two small near-Earth asteroids, 2000 UG11 and 2000 UK11 were observed using the Arecibo and Goldstone radars a week after their discovery. 2000 UK11 is a rapidly rotating (3 min) approximately 30 m solid body. 2000 UG11 is two bodies separated by at least 300 m Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract..

We present the discovery and characterization of DP107 with the Goldstone and Arecibo radars, including a detailed sequence of images showing the system's orbital motion. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

We report radar observations of Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto made during 1999 opposition using the Arecibo 12.6 cm and Goldstone 3.5 cm radar facilities.

Optical and radar observations reveal that 1999 GU3 is subkilometer-sized object with a synodic period of 9.0 days, low visual and radar albedos, and colors more consistent with the ordinarychondrites than the vast majority of main-belt asteroids.

The approach of 1992 SK to within 0.056 AU of Earth on 1999 March 26 provided an excellent opportunity for radar observations. We observed it daily between March 22-26 at Goldstone at a transmitter frequency of 8560 MHz (3.50 cm). Weighted, optimally smoothed sums of cw (Doppler-only) echoes achieve a signal-to-noise ratio of about 300. Our highest resolution cw setup places up to approx. 30 0.5-Hz Doppler cells on the target at echo powers exceeding two standard deviations of the noise. Our highest resolution imaging setup places about 20 0.25-us (37.5 m) x 2.0 Hz pixels on 1992 SK at echo powers above the same threshold. We completed nearly 300 runs with each setup and obtained thorough rotational phase coverage (period = 7.320 h, P. Pravec, pers. comm.). The dispersion of the echoes in time delay indicates a lower bound on 1992 SK's maximum pole-on breadth of approx. 0.4 km that is consistent with the echo bandwidth and rotation period. Variations in the cw spectral bandwidths and shapes and in the delay-Doppler images as a function of rotation phase are evident on each day, are consistent in bandwidth with each other and with the rotation period, and indicate that the asteroid is asymmetric and modesty elongated.

Groundbased radar observations of NEAs can help identify space resources with commercial potential and can dramatically reduce the cost and risk of the initial spacecraft missions to those objects. The near-Earth asteroid (NEA) population is thought to contain approximately 1500 objects as large as a kilometer, approximately 300,000 as large as 100 meters, and more than 100,000,000 as large as 10 meters. More than 10% of the NEAs are more accessible in terms of mission delta-V (i.e., fuel required) than the Moon, Mars, or the moons of Mars. Fewer than 1000 NEAs have been found, but the discovery rate is increasing rapidly. Once an asteroid is discovered (necessarily by wide-field optical telescopes), radar can provide otherwise unavailable information about its size, shape, spin state, and surface properties if it approaches within the range of the Goldstone (California) or Arecibo (Puerto Rico) radar telescopes. Asteroids generally appear as unresolved points through groundbased optical telescopes, but radar measurements of the distribution of echo power in time delay (range) and Doppler frequency (radial velocity) can yield images with resolution as fine as a decameter. Image sequences that furnish adequate orientational coverage can be inverted to construct geologically detailed 3-D models, to define the rotation state precisely, and to constrain the object's internal density distribution. Estimates of radar scattering properties characterize the surface's cm-to-m-scale roughness as well as its bulk density, which for asteroids depends primarily on porosity and metal concentration. A useful spin-off of radar detection is orbit refinement that simplifies navigation of flyby and rendezvous spacecraft.

Three decades after the close encounter of 1566 Icarus, which marked the beginning of asteroid radar astronomy, we had a chance to observe the asteroid afresh by using a more developed radar system, and here we present the results of the study.

We report detailed results of Arecibo and Goldstone radar observations of 30 mainbelt asteroids (MBAs) during 1980-1997. In addition to estimates of radar cross section, radar albedo, and circular polarization ratio, we obtain new pole constraints for several asteroids, with those for 21 Lutetia being particularly restrictive.

Past collisions determine the current mechanical properties of asteroids, and hence their response to future collisions. To understand the evolution of their diverse shapes, structures and spin states, we model hypervelocity impacts into small asteroids using a modern 3D smooth-particle hydrocode (SPH3D) that takes material strength and fracture into account.

We report initial results of daily delay/Doppler observations of Toutatis with the Goldstone 8510-MHz (3.5-cm) radar during November 25 - December 3, 1996. Using the physical model of Toutatis derived form 1992 radar observations (Hudson and Ostro 1995, Science 270, 84-86) to analyze the new data, we obtain refined estimates of the asteroid's orbit, spin state, and surface properties.

We use a radar-derived physical model of 4179 Toutatis to investigate close-orbit dynamics around that irregularly shaped, non-principal-axis rotator. The orbital dynamics about this body are markedly different than the dynamics about uniformly rotating asteroids. The results of this paper have a wider application to orbit dynamics about bodies in a non-principal-axis rotation state.

We obtained echoes from five NEA's during this period. The following table presents our astrometric results. Each entry gives the time delay or Doppler frequency for echoes from the target's center of mass, received at the specified UTC epoch.

The Near-Earth Asteriod Rendezvous (NEAR) flyby of 253 Mathilde on June 27, 1997, should produce a mass estimate accurate to about 6%. However, a volume determination from flyby imaging may have uncertainties > 75%; anticipated lightcurve data might reduce the volume uncertainty to between 30% and 50%.
