9. Can Mild Bilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss Affect Developmental Abilities in Younger School-Age Children?

Abstract

The research study was conducted for the purpose of examining the influence of mild bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (MBSNHL) on developmental abilities of younger school-age children. The sample encompassed 144 children with MBSNHL, aged 7.5-11 (M = 8.85). MBSNHL (20-40 dB HL) was identified by pure tone audiometry. The control group encompassed 160 children with normal hearing. The Acadia test of developmental abilities was used for assessment of developmental abilities. Although statistically significant differences between participants with MBSNHL and those with normal hearing were established in the majority of estimated developmental abilities domains, those differences do not indicate any significant delay in development of assessed abilities, except in the domain of auditory discrimination. The obtained results call for a systematic approach to children with MBSNHL in elementary schools.

13. A novel and effective natural product-based immunodetection tool for TNT-like compounds

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a fast and reliable protocol for Trinitrophenol-Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (TNP-Tris) detection applying a beta-lactamase-fusion protein of choice, the natural product-based immunoreagent tool of competitive sensitivity developed herein for the first time. Since the fusion protein 11B3-scFv-beta-lactamase is constructed from a scFv-antibody (11B3) linked to an enzyme (beta-lactamase), the step related to the use of secondary antibody in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is completely omitted. Indeed, this fusion protein itself serves both as binding mean of the antigen model and detecting agent, due to the presence of the naturally occurring enzyme. In such a way, it actually affords the one-step TNP-Tris detection reaching a promising LOD value of 45 +/- 2 fmol or 157 +/- 6 pg/mL. Taken all together, the current protocol does represent much cheaper and significantly less-time consuming alternative compared both to the recombinant antibodies and recombinant phages, previously designed means in our labs for the same purpose. 17. Low sugar jellies of berry fruits: the impact of low vs. high temperature regime on their chemical composition and antioxidativity

Abstract

This study focuses on the impact of low and high temperature regimes on the chemical composition and antioxidativity of low sugar berry fruits jellies. High quality fruits (strawberry, raspberry and blackberry) were collected from Western Serbia region, quite well recognised both nationally and internationally due to an extremely well developed practice in growing berry fruits. The obtained results have clearly indicated the importance of low temperature regime for enriched contents of both total phenolics and anthocyanins followed by an enhanced antioxidativity. Rubus fruticosus L. Cacak Thornless cultivar, the only autochthonous berry fruit variety screened herein, may be firmly recommended as a raw material for industrial production of low sugar blackberry jellies with exceptional characteristics. This innovative procedure of preparing berry fruit jellies have encompassed the application of low temperature regime (55 degrees C), lower content of sugar (40%), seeds separation from jellies followed by no use of pectin throughout the whole process. Abstract

Background: Breast metastases from extramammary malignancies are extremely rare. Metastasis to the breast is the first sign of malignancy in approximately 10 - 30% of patients, and because of similar morphological features with the primary breast tumor, they represent a major diagnostic challenge. Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) may occur primarily in breast skin or metastasize to the breast. MCC is a rare and highly aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer characterized by a high incidence of local recurrences and metastasis and a high mortality rate. Surgery followed by radiation therapy represents first- line treatment for primary or loco-regional MCC while advanced forms are treated with chemotherapy. Checkpoint inhibitors have shown a significant advancement in the treatment of advanced MCC. Case: A 79-year-old woman presented with a right nipple induration and two painless masses in the right breast. Breast ultrasound revealed an oval hypoechoic mass located in the right upper outer quadrant and another retro-areolar with skin infiltration. Digital breasts tomosynthesis demonstrated well defined oval hyperdense masses of the right breast. Core biopsy showed neuroendocrine carcinoma of unknown origin. Histopathological examination after a radical mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection showed primary tumor situated right underneath the skin with in-transit breast metastasis close to the right axillary breast tail. Immunohistochemical studies of both primary tumor and transit breast metastasis were characteristic for MCC. Conclusion: A multidisciplinary team approach is essential for distinguishing between primary breast carcinoma and metastasis to the breast, which has implications for patient treatment and prognosis.

24. Low-Energy Strawberry Fruits of Joly Cultivar, the First Step Towards a Novel, Food-Based Solution for the Obese Population

Abstract

This study aimed to produce low-energy strawberries of the Joly cultivar by breeding them under different growing conditions. The efficacy of such a process was screened by the means of common physico-chemical parameters underpinned with the findings of elementary chemical analysis. The preferred strawberry breed line (treated with microbiological fertiliser of choice) showed both a decreased energy value (130 +/- 6 kJ/100 g or 31.07 kcal) and an increased water content (91.0 +/- 7.3 g/100 g). Due to a rich content of phenolic compounds (Total Phenolic Content/TPC/4184 +/- 39 mg GAE/kg; Total Anthocyanin Content/TAC/394 +/- 4 mg C3GE/kg), it also exhibited potent antioxidant activity (0.110 +/- 0.008 %/mu L, HPMC /Hydroxo-Perhydroxyl Mercury(II) Complex/) assay; EC50 = 2.01 +/- 0.10 mu g and ARP = 0.50 +/- 0.05 mu g(-1), DPPH assay). Finally, the polyphenolic extract of the same breed line showed high anti-alpha, glucosidase activity (IC50 = 19 +/- 1 mu g/mL), being more than four-fold active compared to acarbose (IC50 = 78 +/- 4 mu g/mL), the anti-diabetic drug used as a positive control. Taken all together, the utilisation of microbiological fertiliser (Bacillus sp.) in tunnels might be recommended for the breeding of low-energy strawberries of the Joly cultivar (the starting point for developing of novel functional foods targeting the obese population) in the same or similar agricultural conditions, if further studies confirm its likely potential and credibility.

25. A contribution to the estimation of berry fruits quality

Abstract

This study aimed to estimate the quality (in terms of standard chemical parameters, total antioxidative activity /AO/ and thermal properties) of the fresh strawberry (Fragaria xananassa L. Duch.), raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) and blackberry (Rubus fruticosusL.) samples grown in the Western Serbia. The examined blackberry variety was found to exhibit the most potent AO (DPPH /2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl/ assay, EC50 4.05 +/- 0.22 mu g and ARP 0.25 +/- 0.03 mu g(-1); Hydroxo-Perhydroxyl Mercury(II) Complex /HPMC/ assay, 0.072 +/- 0.007%/mu L), due to the enriched contents of both total phenolics and anthocyanins. It was actually followed by the raspberry and strawberry samples. Unlike the aforementioned trend for AO, thermal behaviour of all samples was similar. This is first time ever that a DC polarographic HPMC assay has been applied for the characterisation of the fresh berry fruits. Further studies aiming to screen total AO of the soft fruit during growth, storage and processing might be well facilitated by the application of this low cost, rapid, easy-to-handle and reliable electrochemical assay.

Abstract

Summary: In the present work, we describe the chemical synthesis of 3‐HFAs as prominent derivatives of fatty acids and assess if they could be applied as phase change materials (PCM). In addition, 3‐HFAs were obtained by depolymerization of a bacterial biopolymeric material, polyhydroxyalkanoate. Thermal properties of 3‐hydoxyoctanoic, decanoic, and dodecanoic acids are reported for the first time. These materials showed the potential to be applied as PCM in temperature range from 33°C to 66°C. In order to expand the temperature range for application of 3‐HFAs as PCM, eutectic mass ratios of three kinds of binary mixtures of 3‐HFAs were calculated, and their properties were predicted using the Schröder‐van Laar equation. Thermal properties of these mixtures were validated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. These results showed that eutectics considerably expanded the scope of applications of 3‐HFAs as PCMs. 3‐HFAs originating from biotechnologically obtained polyhydroxyalkanoates also showed potential to be applied in development of PCMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit mit dem Titel Kindheitsliteratur und Vergangenheitsbewältigung bei Ilse Aichinger, Danilo Kiš und Peter Härtling hat sich das Ziel gesetzt, einige ausgewählten Texte auf mögliche Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zu untersuchen. Ausgangspunkt sind die autobiographischen Werke: Die größere Hoffnung (Aichinger), Die Familientrilogie – Frühe Leiden, Garten, Asche und Sanduhr (Kiš) sowie Zwettl. Nachprüfung einer Erinnerung und Nachgetragene Liebe (Härtling). Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird auf einige wichtige Aspekte wie z.B. die Kinderperspektive als Erzählform in der Kindheitsliteratur oder das autobiographische Erzählen gelegt. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt der Analyse ist die Verwendung und Bedeutung von literarischen Elementen. Parallelen konnten vor allem in der Verwendung von metaphorischer Sprache als indirekter Sprechweise sowie einige wesentliche thematische Gemeinsamkeiten und Bezüge festgelegt werden. Des Weiteren wird die literarische Aufarbeitung der obsessiven Themen untersucht. Hierbei stehen vor allem der Umgang mit dem Tod sowie die Suche nach dem verschwundenen Vater im Vordergrund des Vergleichs. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung zeigen eine Zusammengehörigkeit vieler Motive, die auf eine doch unterschiedliche Weise in den autobiographischen Texten dargestellt werden., The Diploma thesis at hand, titled „Childhood literature and coping with the past in the works of Ilse Aichinger, Danilo Kiš and Peter Härtling“ deals with comparison of selected texts written by these authors. The effort is made to point out their similarities as well as differences. Following autobiographical writings have been chosen as a starting point: Die größere Hoffnung („The Greater Hope“) by Aichinger, the family triology – Frühe Leiden, Garten, Asche und Sanduhr („Early Sorrows“, „Garden, Ashes“, and „Hourglass”) by Kiš as well as Zwettl. Nachprüfung einer Erinnerung („Zwettl. Reconsideration of a Memory“) and Nachgetragene Liebe („Supplemented Love“) by Härtling. Attention is directed towards several important aspects such as for e.g. child’s perspective as a narrative form in childhood literature or, on the other hand, the autobiographical narration. Further emphasis of this analysis is the usage and importance of various literary elements. Similarities can be recognised especially in the usage of metaphors as the indirect speech. Moreover, similarities can be found in the choice of topics and choice of references. Consequently, the topics in question will be dealt with in more detail. The primary focus will be set on writer’s dealing with death and search for the missing father, respectively. The results of this study show affiliation of many motifs that were, however, represented differently in mentioned autobiographical works.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Two series of semiinterpenetrating networks (SIPN) based on linear hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and thermo-responsive poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA), physically crosslinked with inorganic clay, are presented. The hydrogels with different crosslinking densities were prepared by varying the content of clay from 1 to 6 wt % and contained linear interpenetrant, PVA in the range of 0.5-1.5 wt %. The effect of clay content on swelling/deswelling behavior and phase transition in PNIPA gels, as well as the feasibility of reinforcing the gels with high molecular weight PVA, were analyzed. The thermal response of hydrogels, followed by DSC, confirmed that the insertion of hydrophilic PVA did not have a significant effect on the onset of the volume phase transition temperature, while the response was faster. The equilibrium degree of swelling of SIPNs and PNIPA hydrogels was in the range of 9-79 and decreased with increasing content of clay. The internal morphology and surface wettability of the hydrogels were investigated by scanning electron microscope analysis and contact angle measurements, respectively. The network structural parameters of the PNIPA and SIPN nanocomposites hydrogels, such as the average molecular weight between crosslinks, Mc, and effective crosslinking density, Ne, were determined by dynamic mechanical analysis. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
