Medicine - Abstract
Abstract Objectives Several epidemiological studies address psychosomatic 'self regulation' as a measure of quality of life aspects. However, although widely used in studies with a focus on complementary cancer treatment, and recognized to be associated with better survival of cancer patients, it is unclear what the 'self regulation' questionnaire exactly measures. Design and setting In a sample of 444 individuals (27% healthy, 33% cancer, 40% other internal diseases), we performed reliability and exploratory factor analyses, and correlated the 16-item instrument with external measures such as the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Herdecke Quality of Life questionnaire, and autonomic regulation questionnaire. Results The 16-item pool had a very good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.948) and satisfying/good (rrt = 0.796) test-retest reliability after 3 months. Exploratory factor analysis indicated 2 sub-constructs: (1) Ability to change behaviour in order to reach goals, and (2) Achieve satisfaction and well-being. Both sub-scales correlated well with quality of life aspects, particularly with Initiative Power/Interest, Social Interactions, Mental Balance, and negatively with anxiety and depression. Conclusions The Self Regulation Questionnaire (SRQ) was found to be a valid and reliable tool which measures unique psychosomatic abilities. Self regulation deals with competence and autonomy and can be regarded as a problem solving capacity in terms of an active adaptation to stressful situations to restore wellbeing. The tool is an interesting option to be used particularly in complementary medicine research with a focus on behavioural modification.

Abstract Objective We intended to determine the reliability of a brief life satisfaction scale in a sample of patients with chronic diseases, and to analyze its external validity. Methods Reliability and factor analysis of the 8-item 'Brief Multidimensional Life Satisfaction Scale' (BMLSS) were performed according to standard procedures. The test sample contained 979 individuals (mean age 54 ± 11 years). Forty-two percent had cancer, 22% chronic pain conditions, 10% depressive disorders, 6% other chronic diseases, and 20% were healthy. Results Reliability analysis of the 8-item pool revealed a good internal consistency coefficient (Cronbach's alpha = .869), and a single-factor structure which explains 53% of variance. The BMLSS sum scores significantly differed with respect to the underlying disease, family status, duration of disease, and age. The highest scores were found in healthy individuals, and the lowest in patients with chronic pain conditions and depressive disorders. In cancer patients, the BMLSS correlated negatively with Depression/Anxiety (HADS), Fatigue (CFS-D), and positively with SF-12's mental health and to a weaker content also with physical health. Stepwise regression analyses revealed that life satisfaction can be predicted best by (the absence of) depression, but also by Conscious Living (AKU), which is an active cognitive-behavioral style in terms of adaptive coping. Conclusions The evaluation of the BMLSS revealed that the instrument has good psychometric properties and can be regarded as a brief, reliable and valid measure of LS in patients with chronic diseases. The instrument can be an important additive to existing health-related quality of life questionnaires, since it captures dimensions that contribute to quality of life but are not health related.

Significance\ud \ud Communicating in ways that motivate engagement in social distancing remains a critical global public health priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study tested motivational qualities of messages about social distancing (those that promoted choice and agency vs. those that were forceful and shaming) in 25,718 people in 89 countries. The autonomy-supportive message decreased feelings of defying social distancing recommendations relative to the controlling message, and the controlling message increased controlled motivation, a less effective form of motivation, relative to no message. Message type did not impact intentions to socially distance, but people’s existing motivations were related to intentions. Findings were generalizable across a geographically diverse sample and may inform public health communication strategies in this and future global health emergencies.\ud \ud \ud \ud Abstract\ud \ud Finding communication strategies that effectively motivate social distancing continues to be a global public health priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-country, preregistered experiment (n = 25,718 from 89 countries) tested hypotheses concerning generalizable positive and negative outcomes of social distancing messages that promoted personal agency and reflective choices (i.e., an autonomy-supportive message) or were restrictive and shaming (i.e., a controlling message) compared with no message at all. Results partially supported experimental hypotheses in that the controlling message increased controlled motivation (a poorly internalized form of motivation relying on shame, guilt, and fear of social consequences) relative to no message. On the other hand, the autonomy-supportive message lowered feelings of defiance compared with the controlling message, but the controlling message did not differ from receiving no message at all. Unexpectedly, messages did not influence autonomous motivation (a highly internalized form of motivation relying on one’s core values) or behavioral intentions. Results supported hypothesized associations between people’s existing autonomous and controlled motivations and self-reported behavioral intentions to engage in social distancing. Controlled motivation was associated with more defiance and less long-term behavioral intention to engage in social distancing, whereas autonomous motivation was associated with less defiance and more short- and long-term intentions to social distance. Overall, this work highlights the potential harm of using shaming and pressuring language in public health communication, with implications for the current and future global health challenges.

- Abstract
In maritime emergencies, the time until arrival at the scene of an accident is a decisive factor for a successful rescue operation. In this context, the research project LARUS aims to support the rescue forces at sea with unmanned aerial systems and thus to optimize the rescue process. This refers on the one hand to the localization of potential accident sites and on the other hand to informing the rescuers about the situation on site as well as the provision of an efficient communication infrastructure. For this purpose, the UAS is equipped with various sensors and communication media. To ensure a seamless rescue procedure, the aircraft must be capable of operating even under severe weather conditions. In this regard, the Institute of Flight System Dynamics is currently investigating measures to reduce the gust loads to make the UAS robust against challenging weather conditions. The integration of the LARUS aerial system into airspace using an active collision avoidance system is also an important research aspect. In addition, the adaptation of flight control to the expanded requirements and influencing factors as well as the implementation of international SAR search strategies for flight guidance are also the subject of development work.

- Abstract
Tidal marshes are increasingly valued for their nature-based shoreline protection function, as they reduce waves, currents and erosion. The effectiveness of this function depends on the ability of tidal marsh plants to grow and survive under pressure from waves and currents. However, how this varies with species-dependent plant traits is poorly understood. We performed a field transplantation experiment to quantify species-specific growth responses to different levels of hydrodynamic exposure and tidal inundation for 3 NW European marsh species: Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani, Bolboschoenus maritimus and Phragmites australis. In this order, these species showed increasing shoot stiffness, length and biomass, which are traits that increase hydrodynamic drag forces experienced by plants. Increased exposure to tidal inundation and hydrodynamics reduced the growth of all 3 species, but species with lower biomass and shorter, thinner and more flexible shoots could better cope with higher hydrodynamic exposure and tidal inundation. Furthermore, transplants of S. tabernaemontani (i.e. the species with the lowest shoot stiffness, length and biomass that survived under all tested conditions) developed smaller, thinner and more flexible shoots in response to higher hydrodynamic exposure and inundation. Hence our study indicates that similar inter- and intra-specific plant traits drive plant growth in response to hydrodynamics and inundation. This suggests that the spatial distribution of species typically observed in tidal marshes results not only from species-specific tolerance to tidal inundation gradients but also from hydrodynamic gradients. Allowing enough space for development of species zonation may be important to increase the efficiency of nature-based shoreline protection by tidal marshes.

- Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic (and its aftermath) highlights a critical need to communicate health information effectively to the global public. Given that subtle differences in information framing can have meaningful effects on behavior, behavioral science research highlights a pressing question: Is it more effective to frame COVID-19 health messages in terms of potential losses (e.g., “If you do not practice these steps, you can endanger yourself and others”) or potential gains (e.g., “If you practice these steps, you can protect yourself and others”)? Collecting data in 48 languages from 15,929 participants in 84 countries, we experimentally tested the effects of message framing on COVID-19-related judgments, intentions, and feelings. Loss- (vs. gain-) framed messages increased self-reported anxiety among participants cross-nationally with little-to-no impact on policy attitudes, behavioral intentions, or information seeking relevant to pandemic risks. These results were consistent across 84 countries, three variations of the message framing wording, and 560 data processing and analytic choices. Thus, results provide an empirical answer to a global communication question and highlight the emotional toll of loss-framed messages. Critically, this work demonstrates the importance of considering unintended affective consequences when evaluating nudge-style interventions.

- Abstract
INTRODUCTION: The identification of typologies of health care users and their specific characteristics can be performed using cluster analysis. This statistical approach aggregates similar users based on their common health-related behavior. This study aims to examine health care utilization patterns using cluster analysis; and the associations of health care user types with sociodemographic, health-related and health-system related factors. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey were used. Health care utilization was measured by consultations with a variety of medical, allied and complementary health practitioners or the use of several interventions (exercise, diet, supplementation etc.) within the past 12 months (used vs. not used). A model-based clustering approach based on finite normal mixture modelling, and several indices of cluster fit were determined. Health care utilization within the cluster was analyzed descriptively, and independent predictors of belonging to the respective clusters were analyzed using logistic regression models including sociodemographic, health- and health insurance-related factors. RESULTS: Nine distinct health care user types were identified, ranging from nearly non-use of health care modalities to over-utilization of medical, allied and complementary health care. Several sociodemographic and health-related characteristics were predictive of belonging to the respective health care user types, including age, gender, health status, education, income, ethnicity, and health care coverage. CONCLUSIONS: Cluster analysis can be used to identify typical health care utilization patterns based on empirical data; and those typologies are related to a variety of sociodemographic and health-related characteristics. These findings on individual differences regarding health care access and utilization can inform future health care research and policy regarding how to improve accessibility of different medical

Contains fulltext : 284232.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) The COVID-19 pandemic (and its aftermath) highlights a critical need to communicate health information effectively to the global public. Given that subtle differences in information framing can have meaningful effects on behavior, behavioral science research highlights a pressing question: Is it more effective to frame COVID-19 health messages in terms of potential losses (e.g., "If you do not practice these steps, you can endanger yourself and others") or potential gains (e.g., "If you practice these steps, you can protect yourself and others")? 26 p.

Objective: Pictorial material is one of the oldest human ways of expressing inner-psychological and social processes. This pilot study investigates pictorial material of a landscape modeling task, movement trajectories, and a Tree-Drawings task using a ranking task approach. Methods: 15 subjects (8 female, aged 19 to 60) were asked to do a gardening task in an experimentally constructed environment and Kochs Tree-Drawing-Test. The finished piece of landscape art and the drawing were photographed. Movement patterns and the resulting space used for the landscape modeling task were tracked to create spatial movement trajectory maps. Mental state was measured via the Global Severity Index (GSI) of the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18) and the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S). Picture ranking (from healthy to mentally stressed) was applied to randomized landscape photographs, movement trajectories, and the Tree-Drawings from five experts (raters) representing the three areas of psychology/psychotherapy, art therapy and horticulture/landscaping. Correlations between ratings and GSI were calculated using Spearmans correlation coefficients. Intra-class coefficients (ICC) were calculated from the ratings to validate the initial assignment by experts. Finally, a multivariate regression model was applied to the data. Results: Correlation between ratings and GSI are high to moderate with psychology/psychotherapy (rtree drawing=.714; rmovement trajectories=.611) and with art therapy/theater education (rgarden artwork=.803). Only two ratings (one from psychology/psychotherapy (rLB07=.643; rSH09=.818) and one from art therapy/theater education (rSH14=.682; rUO25=.560)) show a significantly high correlation. Multiple regressions implied that expertise in psychology/psychotherapy and art therapy/theater education might serve as a predictor for correct picture ranking. Conclusions: Further investigations in experts ranking abilities as well as the enhancement of the picture ranking test are recommended directions of future research.

Introduction: Although there is a steady increase of scientific publications in the field of integrative medicine, it is still difficult to get a valid overview of published evidence. Specialist libraries and bibliographical databases may therefore contribute as sources for an evidence base. The open [for full text, please go to the a.m. URL]

- Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world.

- Abstract
Aims: Tidal marsh vegetation along estuaries is exposed to strong environmental gradients that determine which species — enabled through specific traits — can establish and persist. With these ecosystems under anthropogenic pressure, in-depth knowledge on the conservation of remaining tidal wetlands and restoration potentials is needed. In this study we elaborate the habitat conditions in the natural vegetation of the Elbe estuary and analyze: (a) which abiotic factors drive species composition; and (b) which species traits are key to the plants’ strategies in this specific ecotone. Location: Three sites in the Elbe estuary (river kilometer 671–703). Methods: We collected data on soil nutrients, inundation period and wave height and sampled traits of the 17 most abundant plant species, which we analyzed by RLQ (three-table analysis, including environment variables [R], species abundance [L] and a species traits table [Q]). Results: We detected a strong ˈwave–disturbance–inundation gradientˈ, which separated sparsely vegetated low-lying plots receiving high wave impact and exposed to long inundation periods, from high-lying plots showing dense vegetation and aerated soils. Close to the shore, plants showed low organ density and high investment into rhizomes, with a correlation of 0.72 between mass fraction of rhizome and phosphorus content of rhizome tissue. On higher elevations, plants strongly expressed traits relating to competition, like high allocation to stem biomass. Further, we found species with high leaf chlorophyll content showing low specific leaf area values and a negative correlation with the nutrient gradient. Conclusion: The results of our study are particularly relevant for restoration measures in order to re-establish healthy marsh vegetation. However, changes in the environmental conditions, for instance stronger wave energies by a higher shipping frequency in the river channel and sea level rise may trigger changes in species composition through p

- Abstract
Estuaries are highly productive ecosystems that play an important role in carbon fixing. The amount of carbon fixed by temperate brackish marshes depends, among others, on the biomass produced, its decomposition and the organic carbon stored in the soil. Here, we assumed that the functional trait composition of the vegetation both responded to environmental drivers and affected production, decomposition rate of native biomass and soil organic carbon, in addition to direct links between environmental drivers and these ecosystem properties. We tested a set of detailed hypotheses with a partial least squares structural equation model and quantified wave height, inundation period, salinity, soil nutrients, species abundances and as traits the leaf area, specific leaf area, stem bending properties and investment per plant organ, as well as above-ground standing biomass, decomposition rates of native and control biomass (hay) and soil organic carbon (SOC).There was no direct relationship between environmental drivers and ecosystem properties, except with the decomposition of control hay. All other linkages involved the functional composition of the vegetation. Increasing inundation period simultaneously decreased plants traits like stem stiffness, leaf area, specific leaf area and mass fraction of stems and leaves, which were aggregated in a new trait ‘aboveground module’. Total plant biomass decreased in communities on higher elevations with reduced wave height. Here, increased investment in the aboveground trait module resulted in higher aboveground community biomass and SOC but decreased the decomposition of native plant material, which in turn was higher in the low lying vegetation zones. Increasing total plant biomass also increased SOC, but not aboveground community biomass. Both the aboveground trait module and total plant biomass were response and effect traits, by responding to the environmental drivers and affecting carbon related ecosystem properties. At lower e
