The following letter presents a novel, multi-length-scale characterization approach for investigating doping chemistry and spatial distributions within semiconductors, as demonstrated using a state-of-the-art CMOS image sensor. With an intricate structural layout and varying doping types/concentration levels, this device is representative of the current challenges faced in measuring dopants within confined volumes using conventional techniques. Focused ion beam-secondary ion mass spectrometry is applied to produce large-area compositional maps with nanoscale resolution, while atom probe tomography is used to extract quantitative dopant profiles. Leveraging the complementary capabilities of the two methods, this workflow is shown to be an effective approach for resolving nano- and micro- scale dopant information, crucial for optimizing the performance and reliability of advanced semiconductor devices., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Applied Physics Letters

The FAIR principles are globally accepted guidelines for improved data management practices with the potential to align data spaces on a global scale. In practice, this is only marginally achieved through the different ways in which organizations interpret and implement these principles. The concept of FAIR Digital Objects provides a way to realize a domain-independent abstraction layer that could solve this problem, but its specifications are currently diverse, contradictory, and restricted to semantic models. In this work, we introduce a rigorously formalized data model with a set of assertions using formal expressions to provide a common baseline for the implementation of FAIR Digital Objects. The model defines how these objects enable machine-actionable decisions based on the principles of abstraction, encapsulation, and entity relationship to fulfill FAIR criteria for the digital resources they represent. We provide implementation examples in the context of two use cases and explain how our model can facilitate the (re)use of data across domains. We also compare how our model assertions are met by FAIR Digital Objects as they have been described in other projects. Finally, we discuss our results' adoption criteria, limitations, and perspectives in the big data context. Let $N$ components be partitioned into two communities, denoted ${\cal P}_+$ and ${\cal P}_-$, possibly of different sizes. Assume that they are connected via a directed and weighted Erd\"os-R\'enyi random graph (DWER) with unknown parameter $ p \in (0, 1).$ The weights assigned to the existing connections are of mean-field type, scaling as $N^{-1}$. At each time unit, we observe the state of each component: either it sends some signal to its successors (in the directed graph) or remains silent otherwise. In this paper, we show that it is possible to find the communities ${\cal P}_+$ and ${\cal P}_-$ based only on the activity of the $N$ components observed over $T$ time units. More specifically, we propose a simple algorithm for which the probability of {\it exact recovery} converges to $1$ as long as $(N/T^{1/2})\log(NT) \to 0$, as $T$ and $N$ diverge. Interestingly, this simple algorithm does not require any prior knowledge on the other model parameters (e.g. the edge probability $p$). The key step in our analysis is to derive an asymptotic approximation of the one unit time-lagged covariance matrix associated to the states of the $N$ components, as $N$ diverges. This asymptotic approximation relies on the study of the behavior of the solutions of a matrix equation of Stein type satisfied by the simultaneous (0-lagged) covariance matrix associated to the states of the components. This study is challenging, specially because the simultaneous covariance matrix is random since it depends on the underlying DWER random graph.

We consider a system of binary interacting chains describing the dynamics of a group of $N$ components that, at each time unit, either send some signal to the others or remain silent otherwise. The interactions among the chains are encoded by a directed Erd\"os-R\'enyi random graph with unknown parameter $ p \in (0, 1) .$ Moreover, the system is structured within two populations (excitatory chains versus inhibitory ones) which are coupled via a mean field interaction on the underlying Erd\"os-R\'enyi graph. In this paper, we address the question of inferring the connectivity parameter $p$ based only on the observation of the interacting chains over $T$ time units. In our main result, we show that the connectivity parameter $p$ can be estimated with rate $N^{-1/2}+N^{1/2}/T+(\log(T)/T)^{1/2}$ through an easy-to-compute estimator. Our analysis relies on a precise study of the spatio-temporal decay of correlations of the interacting chains. This is done through the study of coalescing random walks defining a backward regeneration representation of the system. Interestingly, we also show that this backward regeneration representation allows us to perfectly sample the system of interacting chains (conditionally on each realization of the underlying Erd\"os-R\'enyi graph) from its stationary distribution. Automated scraping stands out as a common method for collecting data in deep learning models without the authorization of data owners. Recent studies have begun to tackle the privacy concerns associated with this data collection method. Notable approaches include Deepconfuse, error-minimizing, error-maximizing (also known as adversarial poisoning), Neural Tangent Generalization Attack, synthetic, autoregressive, One-Pixel Shortcut, Self-Ensemble Protection, Entangled Features, Robust Error-Minimizing, Hypocritical, and TensorClog. The data generated by those approaches, called "unlearnable" examples, are prevented "learning" by deep learning models. In this research, we investigate and devise an effective nonlinear transformation framework and conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate that a deep neural network can effectively learn from the data/examples traditionally considered unlearnable produced by the above twelve approaches. The resulting approach improves the ability to break unlearnable data compared to the linear separable technique recently proposed by researchers. Specifically, our extensive experiments show that the improvement ranges from 0.34% to 249.59% for the unlearnable CIFAR10 datasets generated by those twelve data protection approaches, except for One-Pixel Shortcut. Moreover, the proposed framework achieves over 100% improvement of test accuracy for Autoregressive and REM approaches compared to the linear separable technique. Our findings suggest that these approaches are inadequate in preventing unauthorized uses of data in machine learning models. There is an urgent need to develop more robust protection mechanisms that effectively thwart an attacker from accessing data without proper authorization from the owners.

We document that recent generations of elementary school teachers are significantly more effective in raising student test scores than those from earlier generations. Measuring teachers' value-added for Black and white students separately, the improvements in teaching for Black students are significantly larger than those seen for white students. The race-specific improvements in teacher quality are driven by white teachers. Analyses of mechanisms suggest that changing teachers' biases may be one potential channel. Our results suggest reason for optimism since these teacher quality differences should lead to improved student learning and a narrowing of the Black-white test score gap over time.

In numerous fields, dynamic time series data require continuous updates, necessitating efficient data processing techniques for accurate analysis. This paper examines the banana tree data structure, specifically designed to efficiently maintain persistent homology -- a multi-scale topological descriptor -- for dynamically changing time series data. We implement this data structure and conduct an experimental study to assess its properties and runtime for update operations. Our findings indicate that banana trees are highly effective with unbiased random data, outperforming state-of-the-art static algorithms in these scenarios. Additionally, our results show that real-world time series share structural properties with unbiased random walks, suggesting potential practical utility for our implementation.

Today, most methods for image understanding tasks rely on feed-forward neural networks. While this approach has allowed for empirical accuracy, efficiency, and task adaptation via fine-tuning, it also comes with fundamental disadvantages. Existing networks often struggle to generalize across different datasets, even on the same task. By design, these networks ultimately reason about high-dimensional scene features, which are challenging to analyze. This is true especially when attempting to predict 3D information based on 2D images. We propose to recast 3D multi-object tracking from RGB cameras as an \emph{Inverse Rendering (IR)} problem, by optimizing via a differentiable rendering pipeline over the latent space of pre-trained 3D object representations and retrieve the latents that best represent object instances in a given input image. To this end, we optimize an image loss over generative latent spaces that inherently disentangle shape and appearance properties. We investigate not only an alternate take on tracking but our method also enables examining the generated objects, reasoning about failure situations, and resolving ambiguous cases. We validate the generalization and scaling capabilities of our method by learning the generative prior exclusively from synthetic data and assessing camera-based 3D tracking on the nuScenes and Waymo datasets. Artificial intelligence (AI) models trained on audio data may have the potential to rapidly perform clinical tasks, enhancing medical decision-making and potentially improving outcomes through early detection. Existing technologies depend on limited datasets collected with expensive recording equipment in high-income countries, which challenges deployment in resource-constrained, high-volume settings where audio data may have a profound impact on health equity. This report introduces a novel data type and a corresponding collection system that captures health data through guided questions using only a mobile/web application. The app facilitates the collection of an audio electronic health record (Voice EHR) which may contain complex biomarkers of health from conventional voice/respiratory features, speech patterns, and spoken language with semantic meaning and longitudinal context, potentially compensating for the typical limitations of unimodal clinical datasets. A fundamental question for education policy is whether outcomes-based accountability including comprehensive educator evaluations and a closer relationship between effectiveness and compensation improves the quality of instruction and raises achievement. We use synthetic control methods to study the comprehensive teacher and principal evaluation and compensation systems introduced in the Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) in 2013 for principals and 2015 for teachers. Under this far-reaching reform, educator evaluations that are used to support teacher growth and determine salary depend on a combination of supervisor evaluations, student achievement, and student or family survey responses. The reform replaced salary scales based on experience and educational attainment with those based on evaluation scores, a radical departure from decades of rigid salary schedules. The synthetic control estimates reveal positive and significant effects of the reforms on math and reading achievement that increase over time. From 2015 through 2019, the average achievement for the synthetic control district fluctuates narrowly between -0.27 s.d. and -0.3 s.d., while the Dallas ISD average increases steadily from -0.28 s.d. in 2015 to -0.08 s.d. in 2019, the final year of the sample. Though the increase for reading is roughly half as large, it is also highly significant. [This research was supported by grants from the CALDER Research Network.]

Efforts to attract and retain effective educators in high-poverty public schools have had limited success. Dallas ISD addressed this challenge with information produced by its evaluation system to offer large, compensating differentials to highly effective teachers willing to work in its lowest-achievement schools. The Accelerating Campus Excellence (ACE) program resulted in immediate and sustained achievement increases. The improvements were dramatic, bringing average achievement in the previously lowest-performing schools close to the district average. When ACE stipends are largely eliminated, a substantial fraction of highly effective teachers leave, and test scores fall. This highlights the central importance of performance-based incentives.

We present a dynamic data structure for maintaining the persistent homology of a time series of real numbers. The data structure supports local operations, including the insertion and deletion of an item and the cutting and concatenating of lists, each in time $O(\log n + k)$, in which $n$ counts the critical items and $k$ the changes in the augmented persistence diagram. We study random walks on Erd\"os-R\'enyi random graphs in which, every time the random walk returns to the starting point, first an edge probability is independently sampled according to a priori measure $\mu$, and then an Erd\"os-R\'enyi random graph is sampled according to that edge probability. When the edge probability $p$ does not depend on the size of the graph $n$ (dense case), we show that the proportion of time the random walk spends on different values of $p$ -- {\it occupation measure} -- converges to the a priori measure $\mu$ as $n$ goes to infinity. More interestingly, when $p=\lambda/n$ (sparse case), we show that the occupation measure converges to a limiting measure with a density that is a function of the survival probability of a Poisson branching process. This limiting measure is supported on the supercritial values for the Erd\"os-R\'enyi random graphs, showing that self-witching random walks can detect the phase transition.

Emerging reconfigurable datacenters allow to dynamically adjust the network topology in a demand-aware manner. These datacenters rely on optical switches which can be reconfigured to provide direct connectivity between racks, in the form of edge-disjoint matchings. While state-of-the-art optical switches in principle support microsecond reconfigurations, the demand-aware topology optimization constitutes a bottleneck. This paper proposes a dynamic algorithms approach to improve the performance of reconfigurable datacenter networks, by supporting faster reactions to changes in the traffic demand. This approach leverages the temporal locality of traffic patterns in order to update the interconnecting matchings incrementally, rather than recomputing them from scratch. In particular, we present six (batch-)dynamic algorithms and compare them to static ones. We conduct an extensive empirical evaluation on 176 synthetic and 39 real-world traces, and find that dynamic algorithms can both significantly improve the running time and reduce the number of changes to the configuration, especially in networks with high temporal locality, while retaining matching weight., Comment: 10 pages. We take the testing perspective to understand what the minimal discrimination time between two stimuli is for different types of rate coding neurons. Our main goal is to describe the testing abilities of two different encoding systems: place cells and grid cells. In particular, we show, through the notion of adaptation, that a fixed place cell system can have a minimum discrimination time that decreases when the stimuli are further away. This could be a considerable advantage for the place cell system that could complement the grid cell system, which is able to discriminate stimuli that are much closer than place cells.

Finite order Markov models are theoretically well-studied models for dependent discrete data. Despite their generality, application in empirical work when the order is large is rare. Practitioners avoid using higher order Markov models because (1) the number of parameters grow exponentially with the order and (2) the interpretation is often difficult. Mixture of transition distribution models (MTD) were introduced to overcome both limitations. MTD represent higher order Markov models as a convex mixture of single step Markov chains, reducing the number of parameters and increasing the interpretability. Nevertheless, in practice, estimation of MTD models with large orders are still limited because of curse of dimensionality and high algorithm complexity. Here, we prove that if only few lags are relevant we can consistently and efficiently recover the lags and estimate the transition probabilities of high-dimensional MTD models. The key innovation is a recursive procedure for the selection of the relevant lags of the model. Our results are based on (1) a new structural result of the MTD and (2) an improved martingale concentration inequality. We illustrate our method using simulations and a weather data.

We introduce Neural Point Light Fields that represent scenes implicitly with a light field living on a sparse point cloud. Combining differentiable volume rendering with learned implicit density representations has made it possible to synthesize photo-realistic images for novel views of small scenes. As neural volumetric rendering methods require dense sampling of the underlying functional scene representation, at hundreds of samples along a ray cast through the volume, they are fundamentally limited to small scenes with the same objects projected to hundreds of training views. Promoting sparse point clouds to neural implicit light fields allows us to represent large scenes effectively with only a single radiance evaluation per ray. These point light fields are a function of the ray direction, and local point feature neighborhood, allowing us to interpolate the light field conditioned training images without dense object coverage and parallax. We assess the proposed method for novel view synthesis on large driving scenarios, where we synthesize realistic unseen views that existing implicit approaches fail to represent. Differentially private algorithms protect individuals in data analysis scenarios by ensuring that there is only a weak correlation between the existence of the user in the data and the result of the analysis. Dynamic graph algorithms maintain the solution to a problem (e.g., a matching) on an evolving input, i.e., a graph where nodes or edges are inserted or deleted over time. They output the value of the solution after each update operation, i.e., continuously. We study (event-level and user-level) differentially private algorithms for graph problems under continual observation, i.e., differentially private dynamic graph algorithms. We present event-level private algorithms for partially dynamic counting-based problems such as triangle count that improve the additive error by a polynomial factor (in the length $T$ of the update sequence) on the state of the art, resulting in the first algorithms with additive error polylogarithmic in $T$. We also give $\varepsilon$-differentially private and partially dynamic algorithms for minimum spanning tree, minimum cut, densest subgraph, and maximum matching. The additive error of our improved MST algorithm is $O(W \log^{3/2}T / \varepsilon)$, where $W$ is the maximum weight of any edge, which, as we show, is tight up to a $(\sqrt{\log T} / \varepsilon)$-factor. For the other problems, we present a partially-dynamic algorithm with multiplicative error $(1+\beta)$ for any constant $\beta > 0$ and additive error $O(W \log(nW) \log(T) / (\varepsilon \beta))$. Since SARS-CoV-2 started spreading in Europe in early 2020, there has been a strong call for technical solutions to combat or contain the pandemic, with contact tracing apps at the heart of the debates. The EU's General Daten Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires controllers to carry out a data protection impact assessment (DPIA) where their data processing is likely to result in a high risk to the rights and freedoms (Art. 35 GDPR). A DPIA is a structured risk analysis that identifies and evaluates possible consequences of data processing relevant to fundamental rights and describes the measures envisaged to address these risks or expresses the inability to do so. Based on the Standard Data Protection Model (SDM), we present a scientific DPIA which thoroughly examines three published contact tracing app designs that are considered to be the most "privacy-friendly": PEPP-PT, DP-3T and a concept summarized by Chaos Computer Club member Linus Neumann, all of which process personal health data. The DPIA starts with an analysis of the processing context and some expected use cases. Then, the processing activities are described by defining a realistic processing purpose. This is followed by the legal assessment and threshold analysis. Finally, we analyse the weak points, the risks and determine appropriate protective measures. We show that even decentralized implementations involve numerous serious weaknesses and risks. Legally, consent is unfit as legal ground hence data must be processed based on a law. We also found that measures to realize the rights of data subjects and affected people are not sufficient. Last but not least, we show that anonymization must be understood as a continuous process, which aims at separating the personal reference and is based on a mix of legal, organizational and technical measures. Recent implicit neural rendering methods have demonstrated that it is possible to learn accurate view synthesis for complex scenes by predicting their volumetric density and color supervised solely by a set of RGB images. However, existing methods are restricted to learning efficient representations of static scenes that encode all scene objects into a single neural network, and lack the ability to represent dynamic scenes and decompositions into individual scene objects. In this work, we present the first neural rendering method that decomposes dynamic scenes into scene graphs. We propose a learned scene graph representation, which encodes object transformation and radiance, to efficiently render novel arrangements and views of the scene. To this end, we learn implicitly encoded scenes, combined with a jointly learned latent representation to describe objects with a single implicit function. In many dynamical systems in nature, the law of the dynamics changes along with the temporal evolution of the system. These changes are often associated with the occurrence of certain events. The timing of occurrence of these events depends, in turn, on the trajectory of the dynamical system itself, making the dynamics of the system and the timing of a change in the dynamics strongly coupled. Naturally, trajectories that take longer to satisfy the event will last longer. Therefore, we expect to observe more frequently the dominant dynamics, the ones that take longer to change in the long run. This article proposes a Markov chain model, called Self-Switching Markov Chain (SSMC), in which the emergence of dominant dynamics can be rigorously addressed. We present conditions and scaling in the SSMC under which we observe with probability one only the subset of dominant dynamics, and we characterize these dominant dynamics. Furthermore, we show that the switching between dynamics exhibits metastability-like property.

Many applications rely on time-intensive matrix operations, such as factorization, which can be sped up significantly for large sparse matrices by interpreting the matrix as a sparse graph and computing a node ordering that minimizes the so-called fill-in. In this paper, we engineer new data reduction rules for the minimum fill-in problem, which significantly reduce the size of the graph while producing an equivalent (or near-equivalent) instance. By applying both new and existing data reduction rules exhaustively before nested dissection, we obtain improved quality and at the same time large improvements in running time on a variety of instances. Our overall algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art significantly: it not only yields better elimination orders, but it does so significantly faster than previously possible. For example, on road networks, where nested dissection algorithms are typically used as a preprocessing step for shortest path computations, our algorithms are on average six times faster than Metis while computing orderings with less fill-in.

Using a new probabilistic approach we model the relationship between sequences of auditory stimuli generated by stochastic chains and the electroencephalographic (EEG) data acquired while 19 participants were exposed to those stimuli. The structure of the chains generating the stimuli are characterized by rooted and labeled trees whose leaves, henceforth called contexts, represent the sequences of past stimuli governing the choice of the next stimulus. A classical conjecture claims that the brain assigns probabilistic models to samples of stimuli. If this is true, then the context tree generating the sequence of stimuli should be encoded in the brain activity. Using an innovative statistical procedure we show that this context tree can effectively be extracted from the EEG data, thus giving support to the classical conjecture., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

In a previous paper, it has been shown that the mean-field limit of spatially extended Hawkes processes is characterized as the unique solution $u(t,x)$ of a neural field equation (NFE). The value $u(t,x)$ represents the membrane potential at time $t$ of a typical neuron located in position $x$, embedded in an infinite network of neurons. In the present paper, we complement this result by studying the fluctuations of such a stochastic system around its mean-field limit $u(t,x)$. Our first main result is a central limit theorem stating that the spatial distribution associated with these fluctuations converges to the unique solution of some stochastic differential equation driven by a Gaussian noise. In our second main result, we show that the solutions of this stochastic differential equation can be well approximated by a stochastic version of the neural field equation satisfied by $u(t,x)$. To the best of our knowledge, this result appears to be new in the literature.
