We pursue the investigation of a generic non-linear extension of axionic electrodynamics in a Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) scenario that implements Lorentz-symmetry violation (LSV). The model we inspect consists of an arbitrary non-linear electrodynamic action coupled to the axion field in presence of an anisotropy four-vector that realizes the breaking of Lorentz symmetry under the particle point of view. The non-linear electromagnetic field is expanded around a constant and uniform magnetic background up to second order in the propagating photon field. The focus of our attention is the study of the material properties of the vacuum in the particular case of a space-like CFJ $4$-vector. The dispersion relations associated to the plane wave solutions are explicitly worked out in two situations: the magnetic background perpendicular and parallel to the wave direction. We extend these results to consider the analysis of the birefringence phenomenon in presence of non-linearity, the axion and the LSV manifested through the spatial anisotropy. Three specific proposals of non-linear electrodynamics are contemplated: Euler-Heisenberg, Born-Infeld and the Modified Maxwell electrodynamics. Throughout the paper, we shall justify why we follow the unusual path of connecting, in a single Lagrangian density, three pieces of physics beyond the Standard Model, namely, non-linearity, axions and LSV. We propose and study the properties of a non-linear electrodynamics that emerges inspired on the physics of Dirac materials. This new electrodynamic model is an extension of the one-loop corrected non-linear effective Lagrangian computed in the work of ref. [3]. In the particular regime of a strong magnetic and a weak electric field, it reduces to the photonic non-linear model worked out by the authors of ref. [3]. We pursue our investigation of the proposed model by analyzing properties of the permittivity and permeability tensors, the energy-momentum tensor and wave propagation effects in presence of a uniform magnetic background. It is shown that the electrodynamics here presented exhibits the vacuum birefringence phenomenon. Subsequently, we calculate the lowest-order modifications to the interaction energy, considering still the presence of a uniform external magnetic field. Our analysis is carried out within the framework of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. The calculation reveals a screened Coulomb-like potential with an effective electric charge that runs with the external magnetic field but, as expected for Dirac-type materials, the screening disappears whenever the external magnetic field is switched off., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

The work aims effective and low-dimensional systems. Some different contexts involving gravitational and electromagnetic interactions are investigated. The electromagnetic one approaches bosonic and fermionic Effective Quantum Field Theories non-minimally coupled in three spacetime dimensions submitted to the expansion of Foldy-Wouthuysen Transformation, what generates (non-)relativistic corrections. A study of the effects of an external electromagnetic field derived from the Maxwell-Chern-Simons Electrodynamics on the obtained interactions are executed, as well as the impact produced by the dimensional reduction on expanded higher dimensional fermionic system in comparison to the low-dimensional one. In the scenario of gravitational effective model, scalar and fermionic particle scatterings reveal inter-particles interactions beyond monopole-monopole, leading to velocity and spin contributions, and the results are compared to a modified Electrodynamics effective model. A non-perturbative model resourcing to Casual Dynamics Triangulation data is adopted to serve as consistency check of the potentials resultants. Low-dimensional Maxwell-Higgs effective models with modified kinetic terms are studied, submitting them to a Bogomol'nyi prescription-type for calculation of inferior (non-trivial) bound energy and the self-dual equations. Vortex solutions for gauge field non-specified by an ansatz are achieved and their topological feature detailed.

The properties of the modified Maxwell electrodynamics (ModMax) are investigated in presence of external and uniform electric and magnetic fields. We expand the non-linear theory around an electromagnetic background up to second order in the propagating fields to obtain the permittivity and permeability tensors, dispersion relations, group velocity and refractive indices as functions of external fields. The case with perpendicular background fields is contemplated. The phenomenon of birefringence is discussed and the fundamental role of the ModMax parameter becomes clear. We calculate the difference of the refractive indices in terms of this parameter and the external fields. Finally, we set up a scenario where the axion is present and compute the interaction energy for the coupled axion-ModMax electrodynamics if a magnetic background field is considered. This calculation is carried out in the framework of the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent variables formalism. In this contribution, we re-assess some aspects of axionic electrodynamics by coupling non-linear electromagnetic effects to axion physics. We present a number of motivations to justify the coupling of the axion to the photon in terms of a general non-linear extension of the electromagnetic sector. Our emphasis in the paper relies on the investigation of the constitutive permittivity and permeability tensors, for which the axion contributes by introducing dependence on the frequency and wave vector of the propagating radiation. Also, we point out how the axion mass and the axion-photon-photon coupling constant contribute to a dispersive behavior of the electromagnetic waves, in contrast to what happens in the case of non-linear extensions, when effective refractive indices appear which depend only on the direction of the propagation with respect to the external fields. The axion changes this picture by yielding refractive indices with dependence on the wavelength. We apply our results to the special case of the (non-birefringent) Born-Infeld Electrodynamics and we show that it becomes birefringent whenever the axion is coupled. We investigate the effects of the Born-Infeld action on the Abelian sector of the electroweak model. The consequence of this approach is the emergence of anomalous couplings in the neutral sector of the $Z$-gauge boson and photon. These new couplings consist of quartic interactions of the photon with the $Z$-particle, as for example, three-photon-and-one-$Z$ vertex. With that, we obtain the decay width of $Z \to 3\,\gamma$ from which we impose a bound on the Born-Infeld parameter. Other bounds are also obtained from the photon quartic couplings. Subsequently, we consider the presence of an external uniform magnetic field in connection with this Born-Infeld weak hypercharge model. The magnetic background field yields new kinematic effects, like the kinetic mixing between the photon and the $Z$-boson, and we obtain thereby the corresponding dispersion relations for the mixed photon-$Z$-particle system. Finally, we calculate the lowest-order modifications to the interaction energy for the anomalous coupling $3\gamma-Z$, within the framework of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. Our results show that the interaction energy contains a linear term leading to the confinement of static probe charges. Non-linear electrodynamic models are re-assessed in this paper to pursue an investigation of the kinematics of the Compton effect in a magnetic background. Before considering specific models, we start off by presenting a general non-linear Lagrangian built up in terms of the most general Lorentz- and gauge-invariant combinations of the electric and magnetic fields. The extended Maxwell-like equations and the energy-momentum tensor conservation are presented and discussed in their generality. We next expand the fields around a uniform and time-independent electric and magnetic backgrounds up to second order in the propagating wave, and compute dispersion relations which account for the effect of the external fields. We obtain thereby the refraction index and the group velocity for the propagating radiation in different situations. In particular, we focus on the kinematics of the Compton effect in presence of external magnetic fields. This yields constraints that relate the derivatives of the general Lagrangian with respect to the field invariants and the magnetic background under consideration. Dimensionality aspects of non-minimal electromagnetic couplings are investigated. By means of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, we attain (non-)relativistic interactions related to the non-minimal coupling in three-dimensional spacetime, for both the bosonic and fermionic fields. Next, we establish some comparisons and analyse particular situations in which the external electromagnetic fields are described either by Maxwell or Maxwell-Chern-Simons Electrodynamics. In addition, we consider the situation of a non-minimal coupling for the fermionic field in four dimensions, carry out its dimensional reduction to three dimensions and show that the three-dimensional scenario previously worked out can be recovered as a particular case. We address the effect of an anomalous triple gauge boson couplings on a physical observable for the electroweak sector of the Standard Model, when the $SU(2)_{L}\otimes U(1)_{Y}$ symmetry is spontaneously broken by the Higgs mechanism to $U(1)_{em}$. Our calculation is done within the framework of the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent variable formalism which is alternative to the Wilson loop approach. Our result shows that the interaction energy is the sum of a Yukawa and a linear potential, leading to the confinement of static probe charges. The point we wish to emphasize, however, is that the anomalous triple gauge boson couplings ($Z \gamma \gamma$) contributes to the confinement for distances on the intranuclear scale., Comment: 5 pages

We investigate spin- and velocity-dependent contributions to the gravitational inter-particle potential. The methodology adopted here is based on the expansion of the effective action in terms of form factors encoding quantum corrections. Restricting ourselves to corrections up to the level of the graviton propagator, we compute, in terms of general form factors, the non-relativistic gravitational potential associated with the scattering of spin-0 and -1/2 particles. We discuss comparative aspects concerning different types of scattered particles and we also establish some comparisons with the case of electromagnetic potentials. Moreover, we apply our results to explicit examples of form factors based on non-perturbative approaches for quantum gravity. We examine physical aspects for the electric version of a recently proposed logarithmic electrodynamics, for which the electric field of a point-like charge is finite at the origin. It is shown that this electrodynamics displays the vacuum birefringence phenomenon in the presence of external magnetic field. Afterwards we compute the lowest-order modification to the interaction energy by means of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. In this work, we analyze an extended $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry with central charge and develop its superspace formulation under two distinct viewpoints. Initially, in the context of classical mechanics, we discuss the introduction of deformed supersymmetric derivatives and their consequence on the deformation of one-dimensional non-linear sigma model. After that, considering a field-theoretical framework, we present an implementation of this superalgebra in two dimensions, such that one of the coordinates is related to the central charge. As an application, in this two-dimensional scenario, we consider topological (bosonic) configurations of a special self-coupled matter model and present a non-trivial fermionic solution., Comment: Accepted version in Advances in High Energy Physics

The excitations referred to as oscillons are long-lived time-dependent field configurations which emerge dynamically from non-linear field theories. Such long-lived solutions are of interest in applications that include systems of Condensed Matter Physics, the Standard Model of Particle Physics, Lorentz-symmetry violating scenarios and Cosmology. In this work, we show how oscillons may be accommodated in a supersymmetric scenario. We adopt as our framework simple ($\mathcal{N}=1$) supersymmetry in $D=1+1$ dimensions. We focus on the bosonic sector with oscillon configurations and their (classical) effects on the corresponding fermionic modes, (supersymmetric) partners of the oscillons. The particular model we adopt to pursue our investigation displays cubic self-interactions in the scalar sector.

This work sets out to compute and discuss effects of spin, velocity and dimensionality on inter-particle potentials systematically derived from gauge field-theoretic models. We investigate the interaction of fermionic particles by the exchange of a vector field in a parity-preserving description in five-dimensional $(5D)$ space-time. A particular dimensional reduction prescription is adopted $-$ reduction by dimensional restriction $-$ and special effects, like a pseudo-spin dependence, show up in four dimensions $(4D)$. What we refer to as pseudo-spin shall be duly explained. We investigate the interparticle potential between spin-0, -1/2 and -1 sources interacting in modified electrodynamics in the non-relativistic regime. By keeping terms of $\mathcal{O}( |{\bf p}|^2/m^2 )$ in the amplitudes, we obtain spin- and velocity-dependent interaction energies. We find well-known effects such as spin-orbit couplings, as well as spin-spin (dipole-dipole) interactions. This paper sets out to establish a comparative study between classes of spin- and velocity-dependent potentials for spin-1/2 and spin-1 matter currents/sources in the non-relativistic regime. Both (neutral massive) scalar and vector particles are considered to mediate the interactions between (pseudo-)scalar sources or (pseudo-)vector currents. Though our discussion is more general, we contemplate specific cases in which our results may describe the electromagnetic interaction with a massive (Proca-type) photon exchanged between two spin-1/2 or two spin-1 carriers. We highlight the similarities and peculiarities of the potentials for the two different types of charged matter and also focus our attention on the comparison between the particular aspects of two different field representations for spin-1 matter particles. We investigate the role played by particular field representations of an intermediate massive spin-1 boson in the context of spin-dependent interparticle potentials between fermionic sources in the limit of low momentum transfer. The comparison between the well-known case of the Proca field and that of an exchanged spin-1 boson (with gauge-invariant mass) described by a 2-form potential mixed with a 4-vector gauge field is established in order to pursue an analysis of spin- as well as velocity-dependent profiles of the interparticle potentials. We here propose a 5-dimensional {\bf Abelian gauge} model based on the mixing between a $U(1)$ potential and an Abelian 3-form field by means of a topological mass term. An extended covariant derivative is introduced to minimally couple a Dirac field to the $U(1)$ potential, while this same covariant derivative non-minimally couples the 3-form field to the charged fermion. A number of properties are discussed in 5D; in particular, the appearance of a topological fermionic current. A 4-dimensional reduced version of the model is investigated and, { \bf in addition to the $U(1)$ electric- and magnetic-sort of fields,} there emerges an extra set of electric- and magnetic-like fields which contribute a negative pressure and may be identified as a possible fraction of dark energy. The role of the topological fermionic current is also contemplated upon dimensional reduction from 5D to 4D.
