This review paper focuses on group IVB transition metal nitrides (TMNs) such as titanium nitride (TiN), zirconium nitride (ZrN), and hafnium nitride (HfN) and as alternative plasmonic materials to noble metals like gold and silver. It delves into the fabrication methods of these TMNs, particularly emphasizing thin film fabrication techniques like magnetron sputtering and atomic layer deposition, as well as nanostructure fabrication processes applied to these thin films. Overcoming the current fabrication and application-related challenges requires a deep understanding of the material properties, deposition techniques, and application requirements. Here, we discuss the impact of fabrication parameters on the properties of resulting films, highlighting the importance of aligning fabrication methods with practical application requirements for optimal performance. Introduction: To report the unusual fundus features of a case with unilateral Duane retraction syndrome (DRS) with same-side extensive macular retinoschisis. Methods: A 75-year-old woman was diagnosed to have DRS type 3 and several multimodal fundus imaging modalities were performed. Results: There was limited abduction and adduction, globe retraction, and narrowing of the palpebral fissure on the adduction of the left eye without a compensatory face turn. Concurrently, spectral domain optical coherence tomography revealed marked macular retinoschisis and severe vitreoretinal traction without any evidence of dye leakage or pooling on fluorescein angiography in the left eye. Discussion: Various ocular abnormalities may rarely accompany DRS and the present case is the first reported case of most likely coincidental macular retinoschisis in association with DRS.

Objectives: Head and neck cancers (HNCs) represent a significant global health concern due to high morbidity and mortality rates. Despite therapeutic advances, the prognosis for advanced or recurrent cases remains challenging. Nivolumab obtained approval for recurrent or metastatic HNC based on the Phase III CheckMate 141 trial. This study aimed to evaluate the real-world outcomes of nivolumab in patients with non-nasopharyngeal HNC., Design: In this multicenter retrospective study, we analyzed 124 patients with recurrent or metastatic non-nasopharyngeal HNC who received nivolumab in the second-line setting and beyond. Data were collected from 20 different cancer centers across Turkey. The effectiveness and safety of the treatment and survival outcomes were evaluated., Results: Nivolumab exhibited favorable clinical responses, yielding an objective response rate of 29.9% and a disease control rate of 55.7%. Safety assessments revealed a generally well-tolerated profile, with no instances of treatment discontinuation or mortality due to side effects. Survival analysis disclosed a median overall survival (OS) of 11.8 (95% CI 8.4-15.2) months. Multivariate analysis revealed that ECOG-PS ≥ 1 (HR: 1.64, p = 0.045), laryngeal location (HR: 0.531, p = 0.024), and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio > 3.5 (HR: 1.97, p = 0.007) were independent predictors of OS., Conclusions: Nivolumab is an effective and safe treatment option for patients with recurrent or metastatic non-nasopharyngeal HNC in real-world settings. Background: Socioeconomic status (SES) is a social classification factor that takes into account income, parental education and occupation. SES has been shown to play an important role in shaping students' academic performance, including in medical schools, but there still remains significant variation in findings around SES and academic achievement worldwide. We aim to assess and explore socioeconomic disparities and their effects on medical school performance at Sudanese public and private universities., Objectives: The objective of our study was to assess the effects of age, sex, living conditions, parental education and income level on the academic achievement of medical students from universities in Sudan., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate medical students at ten public universities in Sudan between September and December 2023. Participants were included if they were older than 18 years and were studying in their 2nd year or older. The data were collected using an online questionnaire with open- and closed-ended questions measuring age, living conditions, parental income level and education. A convenience sampling method was used to recruit participants from universities. The data were analyzed using SPSS v28.0.0, and a p value less than 0.05 was used to indicate statistical significance., Results: We received 832 responses, 516 (62%) from females and 307 (36.9%) from males. The median age was 23 years. Most students lived with their families (61.1%), followed by student housing (28.2%). This study revealed age (p = .024) (95% Cl: 0.025- 0.023) andhigh family income (p = .019) (95% Cl: 0.018- 0.02) are associated with academic achievement in the long term, as demonstrated through cumulative grade point average (cGPA)., Conclusion: The findings underscore the importance of targeted support systems to bridge the socioeconomic gaps that exist among medical students, allowing all students to thrive academically regardless of their background., Clinical Trial Number: None., (© 2024. Background: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited retinal dystrophy characterized by progressive vision loss due to photoreceptor degeneration. Complicated cataract formation, particularly posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC), frequently occurs in RP and exacerbates the visual impairment. Cataract surgery may improve vision; however, the distinctive challenges of RP require specific considerations. This mini-review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the RP-related cataract., Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted via PubMed/MEDLINE, spanning the period from January 1976 to June 2024, using the keywords "cataract," "cataract surgery," "cystoid macular edema," "hereditary retinal dystrophy," "retinitis pigmentosa," "posterior subcapsular cataract," "posterior capsular opacification," "zonular weakness," and "artificial intelligence." We aimed to evaluate cataract surgery in patients with RP, focusing on cataract formation, its surgical management, postoperative complications, patient follow-up, and visual outcomes. Relevant review articles, clinical trials, and case reports with related reference lists of these articles were included., Results: A total of 53 articles were examined in detail, including those identified through focused keyword searches and the reference lists of these articles. Cataract surgery in patients with RP generally results in substantial visual improvement. However, surgery can be complicated, particularly by zonular weakness and subluxation of the crystalline lens. These risks can be reduced by using capsular tension rings and employing meticulous surgical technique. Furthermore, postoperative complications, such as cystoid macular edema and posterior capsular opacification, are common. Despite these challenges, regular postoperative follow-up and appropriate management can help mitigate complications. Integrity of the ellipsoid zone and external limiting membrane on preoperative optical coherence tomographic examination are the main predictors of visual outcomes following cataract surgery; however, outcomes can vary. Though many patients experience significant visual improvement, some may experience limited benefits due to pre-existing advanced retinal degeneration., Conclusions: Cataract surgery may offer meaningful visual benefits in patients with RP; however, careful preoperative evaluation and meticulous surgical technique are required to address the possible challenges. Attentive postoperative care and follow-up are essential to optimize visual outcomes. Early surgical intervention can significantly improve the quality of life in selected candidates, and tailored approaches are necessary in patients with RP requiring cataract surgery. Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is a hormone produced by growing preantral and antral follicles of the ovary. AMH is accepted as an important biomarker for fertility and superovulation parameters in livestock species. This study aimed to evaluate changes in serum AMH level in the oestrous cycle, repeatability of AMH, the effect of age on serum AMH level and the effects of AMH on litter size in Romanov sheep. In the study, a total of 36 Romanov sheep were used as animal material. First blood samples (0th day) were collected from 36 ewes to evaluate AMH and progesterone levels. Second blood samples were collected randomly from 20 ewes 9 days after first sampling to compare AMH levels at two different periods of the oestrous cycle in Romanov ewes. The ewes were categorized into three groups as low, medium and high AMH based on their first AMH levels. Results indicated that serum AMH level did not change during the oestrous and dioestrous phases of the oestrous cycle and two random time points of the oestrous cycle (p > .05). Pearson correlation analysis revealed that there is a high (r = .95) and significant (p < .001) correlation between AMH levels at the 0th (AMH-1) and 9th (AMH-2) days. The effect of AMH level on litter size was found to be significant. Litter size was significantly higher in the high AMH group than in the low AMH group (p < .05). In addition, the age of ewes did not affect serum AMH levels (p > .05). ROC analysis indicates that AMH cut-off value >320 pg/mL with 70% sensitivity and 100% specificity can be used for litter size in Romanov ewes. In conclusion, AMH is highly repeatable and its serum AMH level did not change during the oestrous cycle in Romanov sheep. The newly constituted National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society (NMSS)of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), set up a scientific committee to create a MS disease modifying treatment (DMT) guideline for UAE. The committee considered several unique features of the MS community in UAE including large number of expatriate population, wide variations in health insurance coverage, physician and patient preferences for DMT. The overall goal of the treatment guideline is to facilitate the most appropriate DMT to the widest number of patients. To this end it has adapted recommendations from various health systems and regulatory authorities into a pragmatic amalgamation of best practices from across the world. Importantly where data is unavailable or controversial, a common sense approach is taken rather than leave physicians and patients in limbo. The committee classifies MS into subcategories and suggests appropriate treatment choices. It recommends treatment of RIS and CIS with poor prognostic factors. It largely equates the efficacy and safety of DMT with similar mechanisms of action or drug classes e.g. ocrelizumab is similar to rituximab. It allows early switching of treatment for unambiguous disease activity and those with progression independent of relapses. Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation can be offered to patients who fail one high efficacy DMT. Pragmatic guidance on switching and stopping DMT, DMT choices in pregnancy, lactation and pediatric MS have been included. This work investigated the antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities of lemongrass extract and its effects on rat hepatotoxicity. The lemongrass extract (LGE) contains bioactive components such as phenolic acids, flavonoid components, vitamin C, fibers, and tannins. The LGE had high phenolic content (397 mg/100g) and flavonoids (164 mg/100g), influencing its antioxidant activity of 91.25%. Additionally, it inhibited 81% of breast cancer, also, inhibited the growth of pathogenic bacteria and Candida at a concentration of 20-40 µg/mL. Additionally, it inhibited SARS-Cov-2 by 75%; however, increasing the activity of Cas-3. Quercetin-3-rhamnoside was the main phenolic compound in the HPLC profile; the phenolic compounds may be attributable to the beneficial effects of LGE. In this study, the CCl4-challenged rats delivered two levels of LGE (100 and 300 mg/kg BW). LGE reduced ALT, AST, creatinine and urea by 50 and 37%, respectively. Generally, LGE mitigated the oxidative stress induced by CCl4, which is evident in the histology of liver and kidney tissues, where significant improvement, with no cytoplasmic degradation in undamaged liver hepatocytes, improved kidney performance and shape. It can be concluded that polyphenolic-rich LGE can mitigate the oxidative stress induced by CCl4 and other parameters while enhancing kidney and liver performance.

Asymmetric hot spots in the axial skeleton on bone scintigraphy may confound diagnosis. We describe an unexpected artifact of 99m Tc-methylene diphosphonate near the breast in a 55-y-old woman with breast cancer. The initial whole-body bone scintigraphy revealed a solitary focal lesion in the anterior ribs on the left side. After careful tracking, we determined that this hot spot originated from the adhesive bandage. The patient had placed it in her left front pocket after removing it from the injection site. N -Alkenyl 2-pyridonyl amines are afforded in high yields via a gold-catalyzed rearrangement of 2-propargyloxypyridine and 2-(but-3-yn-1-yloxy)pyridine under acidic conditions. This approach exhibits significant utility due to its outstanding efficiency of conversion in the synthesis of secondary amines as a one-pot reaction. The initial step of the method involves a cyclization reaction for the production of pyridinium salts, followed by the next stage, where rearrangement is accomplished through the nucleophilic addition phenomenon. This approach provides the conversion of primary amines into secondary amines, resulting in a single product. Furthermore, the methodology presents a high degree of tolerance towards several pyridine and aniline derivatives, resulting in the formation of products with excellent yields.

Background: Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) serves as a crucial parameter in assessing the reproductive herd life and ovarian reserve in cattle. Consequently, extensive research is conducted on AMH levels. Various measurement methods can be employed to determine AMH levels. However, to our knowledge, no study has been conducted on Holstein donors using the Elecsys ® AMH kit., Objective: This study was designed to determine AMH levels in donors utilising the Elecsys® AMH kit and to evaluate the relationship between superovulation response parameters and AMH levels., Methods: In this study, we measured the serum AMH levels of 36 cows using the Elecsys ® AMH automated assay before the superovulation protocol (1st sample) and FSH injections (2nd sample). The cows were categorised into three groups based on their AMH levels: low, medium, and high AMH., Results: Positive correlations were identified between AMH and parameters associated with superovulation response. The high AMH level group exhibited significantly greater numbers of corpus luteum, total embryos, transferable embryos, and grade 1 embryos compared to the medium and low AMH groups (p < 0.05) There was no significant difference between AMH levels before the superovulation protocol and FSH injections(p > 0.05). Body condition score and parity did not significantly affect AMH levels in cows (p > 0.05). Also, AMH cut-off values for the number of corpus luteum, total embryo, and transferable embryos were detected as 234, 227, and 210 pg/mL, respectively., Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that a high serum AMH level has a positive influence on the superovulation response. Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a sight-threatening ocular complication of diabetes mellitus, is one of the main causes of blindness in the working-age population. Dyslipidemia is a potential risk factor for the development or worsening of DR, with conflicting evidence in epidemiological studies. Fenofibrate, an antihyperlipidemic agent, has lipid-modifying and pleiotropic (non-lipid) effects that may lessen the incidence of microvascular events., Methods: Relevant studies were identified through a PubMed/MEDLINE search spanning the last 20 years, using the broad term "diabetic retinopathy" and specific terms "fenofibrate" and "dyslipidemia". References cited in these studies were further examined to compile this mini-review. These pivotal investigations underwent meticulous scrutiny and synthesis, focusing on methodological approaches and clinical outcomes. Furthermore, we provided the main findings of the seminal studies in a table to enhance comprehension and comparison., Results: Growing evidence indicates that fenofibrate treatment slows DR advancement owing to its possible protective effects on the blood-retinal barrier. The protective attributes of fenofibrate against DR progression and development can be broadly classified into two categories: lipid-modifying effects and non-lipid-related (pleiotropic) effects. The lipid-modifying effect is mediated through peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α activation, while the pleiotropic effects involve the reduction in serum levels of C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, and pro-inflammatory markers, and improvement in flow-mediated dilatation. In patients with DR, the lipid-modifying effects of fenofibrate primarily involve a reduction in lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 levels and the upregulation of apolipoprotein A1 levels. These changes contribute to the anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic effects of fenofibrate. Fenofibrate elicits a diverse array of pleiotropic effects, including anti-apoptotic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-angiogenic properties, along with the indirect consequences of these effects. Two randomized controlled trials-the Fenofibrate Intervention and Event Lowering in Diabetes and Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes studies-noted that fenofibrate treatment protected against DR progression, independent of serum lipid levels., Conclusions: Fenofibrate, an oral antihyperlipidemic agent that is effective in decreasing DR progression, may reduce the number of patients who develop vision-threatening complications and require invasive treatment. This research aims to assess the production and oxidative stress reactions of lambs fed in a specially designed cage for creep feeding. For this purpose, the Akkaraman lambs (n = 60) were separated into four groups (15 individuals by two sexes and two groups), and all were fed the same ration. On the days that all the data was collected, the lambs were precisely 20, 34, 48, and 62 days old. The study included collecting data on body weights, body measures, and saliva samples from lambs. When the change in body weight was investigated, the results indicated that the differences between caged creep and control feeding groups (P = 0.343) and among the groupings concerning gender (P = 0.735) were insignificant. The importance levels of change differences in body measurements based on feeding methods and gender are withers height: P = 0.003, P = 0.198; body length: P < 0.001, P = 0.394; pectoral chest width: P = 0.030, P = 0.906; chest depth: P < 0.001, P = 0.741; chest circumference: P = 0.093, P = 0.529; back length: P = 0.221, P = 0.935; head length: P = 0.004, P = 0.072 and head width: P = 0.112, P = 0.617 calculated. The study's saliva samples, the effects were examined, and significant differences in Malondialdehyde (P = 0.014), superoxide dismutase (P = 0.029), catalase (P < 0.001), and glutathione s-transferase (P = 0.001) were discovered between control feeding and caged creep feeding methods. In ischemia-modified albumin (P > 0.05), the difference between the groups was insignificant. Peroxidases have received considerable attention as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly catalyst for bioremediation. Their rapid activity loss under harsh environmental conditions and inability to be used repetitively limit their exploitation in real-world wastewater treatment. First, a peroxidase was produced extracellularly by Bacillus mojavensis TH309 and purified 8.12-fold with a final yield of 47.10 % using Sephadex G-100 superfine resin. The pure peroxidase (BmPer) possessed a relatively low molecular weight of ∼21 kDa and was active against L-DOPA on acrylamide gel after electrophoresis. BmPer was immobilized by adsorption functionalized walnut shell hydrochar (WsH) with 61.99 ± 1.34 % efficiency and 37.07 ± 4.16 % activity loss. BmPer and its immobilized form (WsH-BmPer) exhibited maximum activity at 50 °C and pH 9. WsH-BmPer exhibited 3.23-, 2.37-, 1.65-, and 2.25-fold longer half-life than BmPer at 50, 60, 70, and 80 °C, respectively. Immobilization significantly enhanced the stability of the enzyme under acidic conditions. BmPer and WsH-BmPer showed maximal activity in the presence of 1 % salt and retained more than 85 % of their activity even after pre-incubation with 2.5 M salt for 60 min at 50 °C. Their catalytic efficiency was significantly stimulated by pre-incubation with Triton X-100 (1 mM), Tween20 (1 mM), and Mg 2+ (1 and 10 mM). Immobilization strongly reduced the loss of activity caused by inhibitors including Ba 2+ , Hg 2+ , and Cu 2+ . Moreover, both forms of the enzyme were compatible with solvents. The Michaelis constant (K m ) values of BmPer and WsH-BmPer were 0.88 and 2.66 mM for 2,4 DCP, respectively. WsH-BmPer peroxidase maintained about 82 % and 85 % of its activity when stored at 4 °C for 30 days and reused for up to 10 cycles, respectively. Objectives: Yasunari nodules are choroidal lesions observed in patients diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) and characterized by relatively irregular dome-shaped, plaque-like, or patchy boundaries. The present study examines the multimodal imaging characteristics of Yasunari nodules and their value in the diagnosis of NF-1., Materials and Methods: Medical records including optical coherence tomography (OCT), enhanced depth imaging OCT, infrared reflectance (IR) imaging, OCT angiography, and color fundus images of NF-1 patients who were examined at the Department of Ophthalmology in Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine between January 2022 and December 2023 were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of Yasunari nodules., Results: A total of 54 eyes of 27 patients were included in the study. At least one choroidal nodule was detected on IR imaging in 52 eyes (96.3%). In 31 (72.1%) of the 43 eyes (79.6%) with available high-quality OCT angiography images, choroidal nodules were observed as areas showing a flow deficit in the choriocapillaris layer. Of the total 54 eyes included, Lisch nodules without choroidal nodules were observed in 2 eyes (3.7%). In 16 eyes (29.6%), Lisch nodules were not detected despite the presence of choroidal nodules. Both Lisch nodules and choroidal nodules were detected in the other 36 eyes (66.7%)., Conclusion: Yasunari nodules are frequently observed in NF-1 cases and can be easily detected with multimodal imaging techniques, especially IR imaging. A 78-year-old man with a history of lung cancer, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and coronavirus disease 2019 infection experienced visual deterioration of two-weeks’ duration in his right eye. There was multifocal, yellowish-white retinitis foci, vascular engorgement, and scattered intraretinal hemorrhages extending from posterior pole to retinal periphery in the right eye, whereas the left eye was normal. Intravitreal vancomycin, ceftazidime, clindamycin, and dexamethasone were given for endogenous endophthalmitis initially. Vitreous culture confirmed the presence of Aspergillus lentulus, and he was treated with intravitreal amphotericin-B and voriconazole injections together with systemic amphotericin-B, voriconazole, posaconazole, and micafungin therapy. During follow-up, vitreoretinal surgery was performed because of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, and he received one additional cycle of chemotherapy due to recurrence of the cancer. Although the retina was attached, enucleation was eventually required due to painful red eye. Atypical squamous cells beneath the neurosensory retina suggesting metastasis were noted on histopathological examination. Timely ocular examination is crucial for any immunocompromised patient having ocular symptoms. Purpose: To compare, between Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and healthy individuals, corneal subbasal nerve plexus (CSNP) parameters and corneal sensitivities., Methods: Twenty-two patients who were followed up with Alzheimer's disease (Alzheimer's group) and 18 age- and gender-matched healthy individuals (control group) were included in this cross-sectional study. CSNP parameters, including nerve fiber length (NFL), nerve fiber density (NFD), and nerve branch density (NBD), were evaluated using in vivo confocal microscopy. Corneal sensitivity was evaluated using a Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer. The results were compared between the two groups., Results: In the Alzheimer's group, NFL was 12.2 (2.4) mm/mm 2 , NFD was 12.5 [3.1] fibers/mm 2 , and NBD was 29.7 [9.37] branches/mm 2 . In the control group, NFL was 16.5 (2.0) mm/mm 2 , NFD was 25.0 [3.13] fibers/mm 2 , and NBD was 37.5 [10.9] branches/mm 2 . All three parameters were significantly lower in the Alzheimer's group compared to the control group (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, and p = 0.001, respectively). Similarly, corneal sensitivity was significantly lower in the Alzheimer's group (55.0 [5.0] mm) compared to the control group (60.0 [5.0] mm) (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: We determined that, in AD, corneal sensitivity decreases significantly, in parallel with the decrease in corneal nerves. Changes in the corneal nerve plexus and a decrease in corneal sensitivity may be used in the early diagnosis and follow-up of AD. Managing car parking systems is a complex process because multiple constraints must be considered; these include organizational and operational constraints. In this paper, a constraint optimization model for dynamic parking space allocation is introduced. An ad hoc algorithm is proposed, presented, and explained to achieve the goal of our proposed model. This paper makes research contributions by providing an intelligent prioritization mechanism, considering user schedule shifts and parking constraints, and assigning suitable parking slots based on a dynamic distribution. The proposed model is implemented to demonstrate the applicability of our approach. A benchmark is constructed based on well-defined metrics to validate our proposed model and the results achieved.

Based on the CheckMate 649 trial, nivolumab plus chemotherapy is the recommended first-line treatment for HER2-negative unresectable advanced or metastatic gastric, gastroesophageal junction (GEJ), or esophageal adenocarcinoma. This nationwide, multicenter, retrospective study evaluated the real-world effectiveness of this regimen in Turkish patients and identified subgroups that may experience superior outcomes. Conducted across 16 oncology centers in Turkey, this study retrospectively reviewed the clinical charts of adult patients diagnosed with HER2-negative unresectable advanced or metastatic gastric, GEJ, or esophageal adenocarcinoma from 2016 to 2023. This study included 111 patients (54 women, 57 men) with a median age of 58 years. The median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were 11.7 months and 18.2 months, respectively, whereas the objective response rate (ORR) was 70.3%. Multivariable analyses revealed that previous curative surgery was a favorable independent prognostic factor for both PFS and OS. Conversely, an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 2 emerged as an adverse independent prognostic factor for OS. The safety profile of nivolumab plus chemotherapy was found to be manageable. Our findings support the use of nivolumab plus chemotherapy for the first-line treatment of Turkish patients with HER2-negative unresectable advanced or metastatic gastric, GEJ, or esophageal adenocarcinoma. Patient selection based on clinical characteristics is crucial for optimizing treatment outcomes.

Introduction: Ultrasound (US) has an important place in imaging ulceroglandular type patients with tularemia. This study is a case series addressing the imaging findings of US and US shear-wave elastography in ulceroglandular type tularemia., Description: Three patients, two women, and one man, were included in our case series. The patients were admitted to our hospital with neck swelling, pain, and a palpable mass. After the diagnosis of tularemia was made as a result of the examinations performed on the patients, they were evaluated again with US and US shear-wave elastography., Discussion: Since there are many diagnoses including ulceroglandular tularemia in the differential diagnosis of swelling, pain, and palpable mass in the neck, the patient must undergo a thorough evaluation process. Background: Healthcare professionals and educators closely monitor the occurrence of climacteric symptoms in women's primes. Knowledge and perception of menopause play a crucial role in improving quality of life. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and perceptions of menopause among Saudi women and identify its predictors. This study is the first of its kind in the southern region of Saudi Arabia., Methods: Conducted in accordance with the STROBE guidelines, this cross-sectional study was carried out in the Jazan region from May 2022 to January 2023 and involved 480 Saudi women who provided consent. Data were collected through interviews using a validated questionnaire and random sampling. The questionnaire consisted of four parts: informed consent, demographics, 21 knowledge questions, and ten menopause perception questions. The validity of the content and the internal consistency were evaluated before data collection. Primary healthcare centers were randomly selected from four governorates with a proportional sample size to the population. Descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation, and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed using IBM-SPSS., Results: Among the participants, 64 % were under 40 years old, 80 % had experienced menarche between the ages of 10 and 15, 48 % were employed, approximately half held a bachelor's degree, and they had a good family income. The mean knowledge score of the participants was 48.87 ± 11.72, with a minimum score of 27 and a maximum score of 78. In terms of knowledge categories, 56.3 % of the participants (N = 270) were classified as having low knowledge, while 43.8 % (N = 210) were classified as having high knowledge. Most of the participants had positive perceptions and agreed that menopause is a natural event in women's lives. There was a significant positive correlation between knowledge and perception (R = 0.219, P < 0.01). Variable findings were observed regarding the role of explanatory variables in women's knowledge of menopause between univariate and multivariate models. The results of the multivariate model showed that age (46-50 years, OR = 0.42), having children (OR = 1.09), residence (OR = 0.45-5.73) and family income categories (medium: OR = 3.98, good: OR = 3.78, and excellent: OR = 1.95) had a significant impact on knowledge, highlighting the correlation between demographic factors and knowledge., Conclusions: Based on the study findings, we recommend implementing workplace and community-based activities to increase women's awareness of menopause and incorporating it as an integral part of counseling sessions for women in this age group. Background: In low-resource countries like Somalia, tuberculosis (TB) is still a serious global health concern. Understanding the treatment outcomes of TB patients in specific regions is crucial for developing effective strategies to combat the disease. This study aimed to assess the treatment outcomes of TB patients in Benadir, Somalia., Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from TB treatment centers in Benadir, Somalia. The study included all TB patients who initiated treatment between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020. Treatment outcomes, including treatment success, treatment failure, lost, death, and transfer out, were analyzed. Factors associated with treatment outcomes were also examined using chi-square test., Results: The study comprised 3165 TB patients in total. The mean age of the observations was 29.9 years, with males making up the majority (64.58%). The overall success rate of TB treatment was 80.6%, with 5.3% lost, 4.6% died, 0.5% failed, 4.6% transferred out, and 4.4% not evaluated. Factors associated with unfavorable treatment outcomes included older age and HIV co-infection., Conclusion: The treatment success rate for TB patients in Benadir, Somalia, is below the global target of 90%. Common organisms associated with community-acquired pneumonia include Streptococcus pneumoniae , Haemophilus influenzae , and Staphylococcus aureus . Pneumonia can rarely be caused by an organism such as Streptococcus cristatus , as in our case. This organism belongs to the Mitis group within the Streptococcus genus and typically coexists with humans in the oral cavity. We present a case of Streptococcus cristatus bacteremia and community acquired pneumonia in a previously healthy 40-year-old male, for whom infective endocarditis has been ruled out, and who was successfully treated with ceftriaxone. While most reported cases of Streptococcus cristatus involve infective endocarditis, our case is the first identified instance of community acquired pneumonia caused by Streptococcus cristatus . This case highlights that pneumonia with Streptococcus cristatus , typically considered a commensal in the oral mucosa microbiota of humans, is possible, as seen in our case. Unlike previous cases in the literature, our patient did not have infective endocarditis, which is the common presentation of this bacterium. Background: A case of bilateral multifocal serous retinal detachments and dry eye complicated with unilateral peripheral ulcerative keratitis (PUK) during erdafitinib therapy is described., Case Description: A 76-year-old male underwent a baseline examination two months after initiating 8 mg erdafitinib therapy (April 2023) due to metastatic urothelial carcinoma. Left subfoveal serous retinal detachment was observed initially but the treatment was resumed as he was asymptomatic. In May 2023, bilateral multifocal subretinal fluid pockets were identified, and the patient was still asymptomatic. However, in June 2023 he complained of bilateral redness and a stinging sensation in his right eye. Bilateral severe dry eye and right PUK were diagnosed. He was prescribed dexamethasone eye drops and sodium hyaluronate artificial tears for both eyes. One week later corneal staining decreased, and progression of PUK ceased. Erdafitinib therapy was discontinued in June 2023 due to the planned transurethral prostatectomy. By July 2023, after discontinuation of the drug and administration of the topical treatment, the dry eye improved and the PUK became inactive. There was also resolution of subretinal fluid pockets in the right eye and a reduction of subretinal fluid pockets in the left eye. After the reinitiation of erdafitinib therapy, serous retinal detachments recurred in both eyes in September 2023, but both corneas remained stable with topical low-dose dexamethasone, cyclosporine-A and artificial tear usage., Conclusion: Erdafitinib therapy may lead to concurrent anterior and posterior segment complications. Purpose: To determine the relationship between Graves ophthalmopathy (GO) and triglyceride glucose index (TGI) and to evaluate the predictive importance of this index in terms of GO activity., Methods: This retrospective study included 20 inactive GO patients, 20 active GO patients, and 20 healthy controls. TGI was calculated using fasting plasma triglyceride and fasting plasma glucose levels and values were compared between the groups. The receiver operating characteristics curve was used to calculate the optimal TGI cutoff value and the sensitivity and specificity of this value between active and inactive GO groups., Results: No significant difference was detected between the groups in terms of age and gender (p = 0.561 and p = 0.762, respectively). TGI value was 8.49 (8.41, 8.67) in the control group, 8.76 (8.74, 8.87) in the inactive GO group, and 9.06 (8.87, 9.08) in the active GO group (p < 0.001 for control group vs. inactive GO group; p < 0.001 for control group vs. active GO group; p = 0.001 for inactive GO group vs. active GO group). The optimal receiver operating characteristics cutoff value of TGI between active and inactive GO groups was 8.86 with 85% sensitivity and 75% specificity (area under curve: 0.837, p < 0.001, 95% confidence interval: 0.711-0.964)., Conclusion: TGI was higher in both inactive and active GO patients compared with controls. It also appears that TGI may be used as a predictive marker indicating GO activity. Diabetes Mellitus is one of the oldest diseases known to humankind, dating back to ancient Egypt. The disease is a chronic metabolic disorder that heavily burdens healthcare providers worldwide due to the steady increment of patients yearly. Worryingly, diabetes affects not only the aging population but also children. It is prevalent to control this problem, as diabetes can lead to many health complications. As evolution happens, humankind starts integrating computer technology with the healthcare system. The utilization of artificial intelligence assists healthcare to be more efficient in diagnosing diabetes patients, better healthcare delivery, and more patient eccentric. Among the advanced data mining techniques in artificial intelligence, stacking is among the most prominent methods applied in the diabetes domain. Hence, this study opts to investigate the potential of stacking ensembles. The aim of this study is to reduce the high complexity inherent in stacking, as this problem contributes to longer training time and reduces the outliers in the diabetes data to improve the classification performance. In addressing this concern, a novel machine learning method called the Stacking Recursive Feature Elimination-Isolation Forest was introduced for diabetes prediction. The application of stacking with Recursive Feature Elimination is to design an efficient model for diabetes diagnosis while using fewer features as resources. This method also incorporates the utilization of Isolation Forest as an outlier removal method. The study uses accuracy, precision, recall, F1 measure, training time, and standard deviation metrics to identify the classification performances. Background: Overweight and obesity are excessive fat accumulations linked with many health problems, including heart diseases, type 2 diabetes and cancer. Multiple studies have demonstrated that beliefs about overweight, obesity and self-efficacy play essential roles in the success of interventions for obesity management., Objectives: This study aimed to identify the perceptions of university students of overweight and obesity using the health belief model (HBM) and to analyse their association with the body mass index (BMI) categories of the students., Design: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study and a multistage sampling technique were used to ensure the recruitment of students from selected colleges of Jazan University-Saudi Arabia., Setting: Six colleges of Jazan University were randomly selected to ensure equal representation of health sciences, sciences and humanities colleges., Participants: A total of 579 students completed an online survey between January and April 2023., Primary and Secondary Outcome Measures: The primary outcome measures were demographic characteristics and HBM constructs. Secondary outcome measures were behavioural intentions relating to obesity management., Results: This study demonstrated that gender and self-reported family history of obesity were significantly correlated with the BMI categories of the students (p <0.001). Students in the underweight category showed the highest mean score for perceived severity (3.62 ±0.08). Perceived self-efficacy in exercise and diet was significantly associated with BMI categories, with adjusted ORs of 2.82 (2.10 to 3.79) and 1.51 (1.09 to 2.09), respectively. Perceived barriers to healthy eating and regular physical activity were significantly related to the behavioural intentions of obesity management. Introduction: We present a single-eyed case with a previous diagnosis of breast cancer who had intraretinal cystoid changes associated with the systemic administration of ixabepilone in her only seeing eye. To our best knowledge, this is the first reported case describing this phenomenon related to the ixabepilone administration., Case Description: A 54-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer was examined due to visual deterioration in her only good left eye. The patient had undergone cataract surgery and lens implantation in her right eye following a childhood accident, but subsequently had developed a refractory glaucoma and lost her right vision. Six cycles of 40 mg/m 2 systemic ixabepilone (3-hly intravenous infusion once every 3 weeks) had been administered within the past six months. Her visual decline started two weeks following the last treatment session. She was offered intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor injection elsewhere. Fluorescein angiogram showed no dye leakage whereas spectral-domain optical coherence tomography demonstrated parafoveal intraretinal cystoid changes. En-face optical coherence tomography revealed petaloid type roundish hyporeflective areas at the level of superficial and deep vascular plexus. Ixabepilone-associated cystoid maculopathy was suspected as she received only ixabepilone for the chemotherapy in the last six months. We thus recommended her not to continue ixabepilone therapy. Ten weeks after the ixabepilone cessation, intraretinal cystoid changes had resolved completely., Conclusion: Angiographically silent intraretinal cystoid changes may develop in association with the use of ixabepilone. Background:  Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic pain condition that may be associated with dysfunction in the central nervous system., Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the vestibulo-spinal reflex (VSR) and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in FMS using the cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) tests, respectively, and to evaluate their relation to disease severity., Methods:  This study included 30 female FMS patients and 30 well-matched healthy controls. They underwent full history taking and assessment of the severity of dizziness/vertigo using the Dizziness Handicap Inventory; assessment of the severity of FMS symptoms using the Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire; bedside examination of the dizzy patient; videonystagmography, cVEMP, and oVEMP tests; basic audiologic evaluation; and uncomfortable loudness level (UCL) testing., Results:  Dizziness was reported in 46.6% and vertigo in 11.1% of patients. Abnormalities in cVEMP (50%) and oVEMP (63.3%) were mostly unilateral, irrespective of FMS severity. Disease duration affected only the oVEMP amplitude. Fibromyalgia syndrome patients had a statistically significant lower UCL and narrower dynamic range compared to controls., Conclusion:  The VSR and VOR are commonly affected in FMS patients, and findings suggest central sensitization involving the brain stem. We recommend routine cVEMP and oVEMP testing to assess brainstem function in FMS patients.

Background: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) is a useful tool for the detection of disease or quantitative trait-related genetic variations in the veterinary field. For a binary trait, a case/control experiment is designed in GWAS. However, there is limited information on the optimal case/control and sample size in GWAS., Objectives: In this study, it was aimed to detect the effects of case/control ratio and sample size for GWAS using computer simulation under certain assumptions., Method: Using the PLINK software, we simulated three different disease scenarios. In scenario 1, we simulated 10 different case/control ratios with increasing ratio of cases to controls. In scenario 2, we did versa of scenario 1 with the increasing ratio of controls to cases. In scenarios 1 and 2, sample size gradually was increased with the change case/control ratios. In scenario 3, the total sample size was fixed to 2000 to see real effects of case/control ratio on the number of disease-related single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)., Results: The results showed that the number of disease-related SNPs were the highest when the case/control ratio is close to 1:1 in scenarios 1 and 2 and did not change with an increase in sample size. Similarly, the number of disease-related SNPs was the highest in case/control ratios 1:1 in scenario 3. However, unbalanced case/control ratio caused the detection of lower number of disease-related SNPs in scenario 3. The estimated average power of SNPs was highest when case/control ratio is 1:1 in all scenarios., Conclusions: All findings led to the conclusion that an increase in sample size may enhance the statistical power of GWAS when the number of cases is small. In addition, case/control ratio 1:1 may be the optimal ratio for GWAS. These findings may be valuable not only for veterinary field but also for human clinical experiments., (© 2024 The Authors. Pregnancy toxaemia is a serious disease that occurs during the last trimester of pregnancy in sheep. Yet, in most cases, the disease may have a subclinical course. This study was aimed at comparing blood βHBA measurement devices for diagnosis of subclinical pregnancy toxaemia in late pregnant sheep. In the study, a total of 50 blood samples were collected from Romanov (n = 30) and cross-bred Hamdani (n = 20) sheep. Blood βHBA levels were measured using TaiDoc TD-4235 and CentriVet βHBA hand-held meter. Randox βHBA (Ranbut) assay was used as a reference laboratory method to compare hand-held meters. βHBA value of 0.8 mmol/L was set as the cut-off value for diagnosis of subclinical pregnancy toxaemia. Statistical analyses were carried out using Minitab 21 and Jamovi software. In the study, the correlation of Randox-TaiDoc TD-4235 and Randox-CentriVet was .822 (p < .001) and .728 (p < .001), respectively. Based on the Ranbut assay, nine ewes out of 50 were diagnosed with subclinical pregnancy toxaemia. Specificity (detection of healthy ewes) and sensitivity (detection of ewes with subclinical pregnancy toxaemia) for TaiDoc TD-4235 and CentriVet hand-held meters were 100%, 77.8%, and 100%, 66.7%, respectively. In the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, areas under the ROC curve (AUC) were 0.976 and 0.920 for TaiDoc and CentriVet, respectively. Bland-Altman analysis revealed a bias of 0.092 mmol/L for TaiDoc and a bias of 0.132 mmol/L for CentriVet. TaiDoc hand-held meter shows a better correlation with the Randox Ranbut assay and greater sensitivity compared to the CentriVet hand-held meter. In conclusion, both TaiDoc and CentriVet hand-held meters can be securely used in the diagnosis of subclinical pregnancy toxaemia in sheep. For these reasons, subclinical pregnancy toxaemia and these devices will be evaluated within the scope of herd management programme in the sheep industry. Background:  Chronic unilateral hearing loss causes imbalanced auditory input to the brain that triggers cortical reorganization. The effect of sensorineural hearing loss on the central auditory system (CAS) has been thoroughly studied, while there is a paucity of research on the effect of conductive hearing loss (CHL). The aim of this study was to assess the P1-N1-P2 cortical auditory evoked response potential (CAEP) in adult individuals with chronic acquired unilateral CHL., Methods:  This study included 108 participants of both genders: 54 patients with unilateral chronic CHL who were compared to well-matched 54 controls. All were subjected to history-taking, otologic examination, basic audiological evaluation, and bone conduction N1-P2 CAEP., Results:  The affected ears of the cases showed highly statistically significant shorter CAEPs N1, P2, N1-P2 latencies but not P1, and showed highly statistically significant larger N1, P2, N1P2, amplitude than the control group. Latencies decreased and amplitudes increased as the degree of CHL increased, but were not affected by patients' age, side, or duration of the CHL. Cases with tinnitus had statistically significant and worse results than those without tinnitus., Conclusion:  Unilateral chronic CHL might enhance neurocortical plasticity, with greater changes occurring at greater degrees of the CHL.

Objectives: This study aims to assess cancer patients' accessibility to healthcare services and perceived barriers during the COVID-19 pandemic in Khartoum state, aiming to explore the consequent impact on cancer patients. It also aims to determine the coping strategies used by patients to overcome these barriers., Study Design: This is a retrospective analytical cross-sectional study., Methods: Data were collected from August 2020 to March 2021, with a sample size of 316 cancer patients. Systemic random sampling and SPSS version 25 were utilized for data collection and analysis., Results: The study found that 55.7 % of the surveyed cancer patients had experienced disruptions in accessing essential cancer healthcare services during the lockdown. The study identified the most common cancers as breast (19.7 %), gastrointestinal (19 %), and ovarian (11 %). Notable barriers included governmental travel restrictions (51.6 %), outpatient service closures (41.8 %), and high costs (27.8 %). Additionally, delayed treatment was directly associated with a 33.3 % fatality rate among the participants., Conclusions: This study highlights the considerable negative impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on cancer care in Sudan. This study employs diverse machine learning models, including classic artificial neural network (ANN), hybrid ANN models, and the imperialist competitive algorithm and emotional artificial neural network (EANN), to predict crucial parameters such as fresh water production and vapor temperatures. Evaluation metrics reveal the integrated ANN-ICA model outperforms the classic ANN, achieving a remarkable 20% reduction in mean squared error (MSE). The emotional artificial neural network (EANN) demonstrates superior accuracy, attaining an impressive 99% coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) in predicting freshwater production and vapor temperatures. The comprehensive comparative analysis extends to environmental assessments, displaying the solar desalination system's compatibility with renewable energy sources. Results highlight the potential for the proposed system to conserve water resources and reduce environmental impact, with a substantial decrease in total dissolved solids (TDS) from over 6,000 ppm to below 50 ppm. Purpose: To elucidate whether wide-field fluorescein angiography (WFFA) can yield additional information in patients with newly diagnosed idiopathic acute anterior uveitis (AAU)., Methods: The WFFA was performed in patients with idiopathic AAU, and the findings were analyzed according to the scoring system by Angiography Scoring for Uveitis Nomenclature., Results: Forty-four eyes of 30 patients (22 eyes of 13 patients in the pediatric group and 22 eyes of 17 patients in the adult group) were studied. The mean age was 12.41 ± 3.92 (range, 5-18) years in the pediatric group and 42.36 ± 32.07 (range, 24-68) years in the adult group. Thirteen eyes (59%) of pediatric patients and 12 eyes (54%) of adult patients showed some evidence of posterior segment activity on the WFFA ( p  = .764).     Systemic treatment was administered in 53.8% of the pediatric and 5.9% of adult patients, depending on the disease severity., Conclusion: Pediatric patients with idiopathic AAU may have subtle posterior segment manifestations more than adult patients, and posterior segment findings may affect the treatment preferences of physicians.

Tumors represent ecosystems where subclones compete during tumor growth. While extensively investigated, a comprehensive picture of the interplay of clonal lineages during dissemination is still lacking. Using patient-derived pancreatic cancer cells, we created orthotopically implanted clonal replica tumors to trace clonal dynamics of unperturbed tumor expansion and dissemination. This model revealed the multifaceted nature of tumor growth, with rapid changes in clonal fitness leading to continuous reshuffling of tumor architecture and alternating clonal dominance as a distinct feature of cancer growth. Regarding dissemination, a large fraction of tumor lineages could be found at secondary sites each having distinctive organ growth patterns as well as numerous undescribed behaviors such as abortive colonization. Paired analysis of primary and secondary sites revealed fitness as major contributor to dissemination. From the analysis of pro- and nonmetastatic isogenic subclones, we identified a transcriptomic signature able to identify metastatic cells in human tumors and predict patients' survival.

Background: Accumulating evidence indicates that the incidence of cancer is increasing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This analysis aimed to determine the current cancer research output in the UAE to guide future national research., Methods: The Scopus database was searched for cancer-related bibliographic data from the UAE. The number of publications, citation analysis, co-authorship of the author, institution, and country, keyword co-occurrence, and reference co-citations were analyzed using the R-studio bibliometrics package and VOSviewer software., Results: A total of 1678 journal articles were retrieved from 1981 to 2022. Cancer research in the UAE (UCR) is increasing at a rate of 14.64% (R-squared = 0.75; F = 46.477; P<0.001). The UAE had a 0.06% participation rate in terms of the number of original articles. The rate of international co-authorship is 40.23%. The U.S.A., U.K., Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, and Canada had more than 100 co-authored documents from 156 countries that collaborated with the U.A.E., Conclusions: Compared to other nations, the UAE has fewer publications on cancer, although the number is growing. The current report provides an up-to-date and in-depth summary of the trends in UCR. Background: Adequate training in infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance is crucial for pharmacy students to participate in antibiotic stewardship programs and understand microbiology careers., Aim: The study was carried out to assess the knowledge and self-reported confidence in antibiotic resistance, antibiotic therapy, and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) among final-year undergraduate pharmacy students in Sudan., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in three universities using a 57-item online questionnaire between April and May 2022., Results: A total of 109 students (response rate 36%) participated and showed average knowledge scores of 5.6±1.7 (out of 10.0) for antibiotic resistance, 4.9±2.0 (out of 5.0) for appropriate antibiotic therapy, and 3.1±1.4 (out of 5.0) for AMS. No significant differences were observed among schools. Some students reported poor knowledge about antibiotic therapy and the consequences of resistance. One-third of students lacked confidence in interpreting microbiological results. Knowledge of antibiotic resistance among students' practice area after graduation was higher ( p =0.017) and those interested in ID careers (5.8 vs 4.8) ( p =0.037). Male students (5.6 vs 4.5) and those interested in ID careers (4.3 vs 3.4) ( p <0.001) had higher scores of appropriate antibiotic therapy. Students attended antibiotic resistance courses (51.5 vs 45.2), and those interested in ID significantly had higher self-confidence (55.3 vs 45.8) ( p =0.008)., Conclusion: Pharmacy students in Sudan have substantial knowledge of AMS and antibiotic resistance with poor knowledge of antibiotic therapy. Introduction: A case of ocular bartonellosis under anti-tumour necrosis factor treatment is described., Case Description: A 29-year-old woman with psoriasis who had been on certolizumab treatment was examined with a left visual deterioration following a fever bout, malaise, and placoid erythematous rashes on her neck. As there was acute anterior uveitis in her left eye, it was recommended to stop certolizumab treatment for a possible infectious aetiology. However, her physician elected to continue the certolizumab treatment. Ten days later, the patient noticed further visual decline despite the topical steroid treatment. This time, there were scattered yellow-white small retinitis foci at the left posterior pole. Infectious agents were searched and while Bartonella henselae antibodies were negative for immunoglobulin M, the immunoglobulin G titre was 1/80. Clinical findings were improved with the systemic treatment of oral trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (160/800 mg twice daily for six weeks) and azithromycin (500 mg once daily for two weeks)., Discussion: Though extremely rare, ocular bartonellosis should be kept in mind in patients on anti-tumour necrosis factor treatment as rapid and accurate diagnosis may end up with an excellent visual outcome and full recovery., Learning Points: Anti-tumour necrosis factor treatment is fraught with several ocular side effects including myositis, corneal infiltrates, scleritis, uveitis, optic neuritis, retinal vasculitis and ophthalmoplegia.When a new uveitis episode occurs in cases undergoing anti-tumour necrosis factor therapy, its cause poses a diagnostic challenge as it can have either an infectious or a non-infectious nature.Though very rare, ocular bartonellosis may also occur in immunocompromised individuals and a prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment can lead to an excellent visual recovery., Competing Interests: Conflicts of Interests: The Authors declare that there are no competing interests., (© EFIM 2024.)

The present study focused on evaluating the proximate analysis, mineral composition, and in vitro anti-giardial activity of Pimpinella anisum seed extracts, which are aromatic plants with a long history of usage in folk and conventional medicine, as well as pharmaceutical manufacturing. Standard methods were used to determine the proximate analysis of the powdered plant sample, including dry matter, ash, fat, protein, fiber, and carbohydrates. The mineral contents of Pimpinella anisum seed were analyzed using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), revealing that the plant has a high fiber content (42.62%) followed by carbohydrates (38.79%). The seeds were also found to be a rich source of minerals, with notable amounts of Rubidium, Magnesium, and Calcium. The extracts showed a high mortality percentage compared to Metronidazole, with the chloroform extract exhibiting higher anti-giardial activity (78.71%) than the ethanolic extract (75.29%) at a concentration of 500 ppm. These findings support the traditional use of Anise in treating gastrointestinal issues and as a natural supplement. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of placental growth factor (PLGF), neuropilin-1 (NP-1), and neuropilin-2 (NP-2) molecules in primary pterygium tissue compared with normal conjunctival tissue., Methods: The records of 42 patients who underwent excision surgery with autografts for primary pterygium (pterygium group) and 20 patients who underwent conjunctival nevus excision surgery (control group) in the same period were reviewed retrospectively. The samples obtained from the pterygium tissues in the pterygium group and the clean conjunctival tissues adjacent to the nevus in the control group were collected from the archive. Immunohistochemical stains of the primary antibodies-1/100 diluted PLGF, NP-1, and NP-2 (Abcam Cambridge Science Park, UK)-were applied to all groups. Staining intensities and the percentage of positive cells in epithelial, endothelial, stromal, and inflammatory cells were analyzed by an experienced pathologist., Results: The positivity rates of PLGF and NP-2 expression in epithelial, endothelial, stromal, and inflammatory cells were found to be higher in the pterygium group than in the control group (PLGF: p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.001, and p < 0.001, respectively; NP-2: p < 0.001 for all). Staining intensities for PLGF and NP-2 were higher in the pterygium group than in the control group (PLGF: p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.005, and p < 0.001, respectively; NP-2: p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.001, and p < 0.001, respectively). However, no significant differences were found in any cell type in terms of NP-1 expression positivity rates (p = 0.730, p = 0.121, p = 0.524, and p = 0.624, respectively) or staining intensity (p = 0.716, p = 0.147, p = 0.147, and p = 0.780, respectively)., Conclusion: PLGF and NP-2 levels were found to be higher in pterygium tissue, while there was no difference in NP-1. We report a sensitive lateral flow assay (LFA) in which the assay colour change originated from reporter labels constructed from silica spheres (radius = 450 nm) coated with approximately 3.9 × 10 3 gold nanoparticles (radius = 8.5 nm). These reporter labels were modified with DNA and deposited in the conjugation area of an LFA device assembled on wax-patterned Fusion 5 paper. Test and control zones of the device were pre-loaded with capture probe formed by avidin-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles attached with biotin-tagged DNA sequences. Proof-of-concept was demonstrated by the detection of a partial sequence of the actin gene of Colletotrichum truncatum. The DNA target could be detected with an LOD of 46 pM, which was 5 times lower than a comparative assay using gold nanoparticles alone. The assay showed good selectivity against the Colletotrichum species C. scovillei and C. gloeosporioides, as well as against DNA from the fungal genera Aspergillus niger and Alternaria alternata. There was negligible change in sensor response over storage for one month at room temperature. A 56-year-old man was referred to our clinic for unilateral nodular scleritis unresponsive to systemic corticosteroids. A localized, nodular hyperemia on the nasal bulbar conjunctiva surrounding a central cyst-like lesion together with vascular engorgement was observed on slit-lamp examination of the left eye. No abnormal fundoscopic findings were noted. Surgical exploration revealed an embedded episcleral brown colored, soft to touch, splinter-like organic foreign body (FB) which was confirmed by the histopathological examination. Nodular hyperemia resolved during the postoperative follow-up period, and mild scar tissue accompanied by scleral thinning developed in the left nasal bulbar conjunctiva. Ocular injury associated with FBs may cause significant ocular morbidity depending on the nature and location of the FB. Severe visual disability may occur if left untreated. Subconjunctival FBs are rare and may present with a clinical picture mimicking episcleritis or scleritis. In this study, our aim was to elucidate the relationship between Anoxybacillus rupiensis DSM 17127 T and Anoxybacillus geothermalis GSsed3 T through whole-genome phylogenetic analysis. The obtained 16S rRNA gene sequence from the genome of A. rupiensis DSM 17127 T exhibited a 99.8% similarity with A. geothermalis GSsed3 T . In the phylogenetic trees constructed using whole-genome sequences and 16S rRNA gene sequences, A. rupiensis DSM 17127 T and A. geothermalis GSsed3 T were observed to form a clade, indicating a close relationship between them. Moreover, the average amino acid identity, average nucleotide identity, and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values calculated between A. rupiensis DSM 17127 T and A. geothermalis GSsed3 T exceeded the threshold values typically used for species demarcation. Furthermore, the phylogenomic analysis based on the core genome of the strains in question provided additional support for the formation of a monophyletic clade by A. rupiensis DSM 17127 T and A. geothermalis GSsed3 T . Most phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features between both strains were almost identical except for a few exceptions. These findings suggest that both strains should be classified as belonging to the same species, and we propose that A. geothermalis GSsed3 T is a later heterotypic synonym of A. rupiensis DSM 17127 T ., (© 2024. Background: To compare distinctive features of hyperreflective particles observed on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) sections in eyes with acute toxoplasma chorioretinitis (TC) and non-infectious uveitis (NIU)., Methods: Medical records and the spectral-domain OCT images of the patients with TC and NIU were retrospectively reviewed. The TC and NIU groups were compared in terms of age, sex, mean OCT image quality, mean central macular thickness (CMT), presence of intraretinal fluid (IRF), presence of subretinal fluid (SRF), number of hyperreflective particles in the posterior vitreous area and mean particle measurement in the posterior vitreous area., Results: Non-infectious uveitis group included nine patients (60 %) with Behcet's uveitis, five patients (33.3 %) with idiopathic posterior uveitis or panuveitis, and the remaining patient (6.7 %) with HLA-B27 associated uveitis. Comparison of the mean age, sex distribution, mean OCT image quality, mean CMT, presence of IRF, presence of SRF and the mean number of hyperreflective particles in the posterior vitreous area between the two groups showed no statistically significant differences (p = 0.085, p = 0.051, p = 0.748, p = 0.431, p = 0.109, p = 0.080 and p = 0.152, respectively). However, the mean length of the hyperreflective particles in the posterior vitreous area was 27.22 ± 8.60 μm in the TC group, and 21.91 ± 3.58 μm in the NIU group, with a significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.036)., Conclusion: This pilot study aimed to assess the hyperreflective particles in the posterior vitreous area using spectral-domain OCT images and image processing software. The anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) indicates ovarian reserve in cattle, maintaining a consistent trajectory post-puberty. In heterosexual pregnancies, the development of the Müllerian duct in female foetuses is inhibited, resulting in an anticipated minimal or absent ovarian reserve capacity. This investigation aimed to compare AMH levels in healthy Holstein heifers that had reached puberty with those of freemartin animals of the same breed and age. The study incorporated Holstein heifers reaching puberty between 11 and 15 months of age in Group 1 (G1, n = 20) and freemartin animals in Group 2 (G2, n = 19, 16). AMH measurements (AMH-1/AMH-2) were recorded at 12-day intervals for the study participants. Notably, AMH levels in three freemartin animals could not be detected, prompting statistical analysis based on measurements from the remaining 16 freemartin animals in G2. A statistically significant correlation was observed between two separate measurements in G1 and G2 (p < .001). Furthermore, AMH-1 and AMH-2 levels were statistically higher in G1 than in G2 (p < .001). In G1, AMH-1 levels ranged from 227 to 677 pg/mL, with an average of 367.3 ± 25.5 pg/mL, and AMH-2 levels ranged from 234 to 645 pg/mL, with an average of 380.8 ± 24.4 pg/mL. Conversely, in G2, AMH-1 levels ranged from 10 to 72 pg/mL, with an average of 26.8 ± 4.44 pg/mL, and AMH-2 levels ranged from 12 to 68 pg/mL, with an average of 28.75 ± 4.18 pg/mL. The mean AMH levels in G1 were approximately 14 times higher than in G2 (p < .001). Consequently, ROC analysis utilizing AMH-1 and AMH-2 data established cut-off values of ≤72 and ≤ 68 pg/mL respectively for distinguishing freemartin animals.
