This review paper delves into the geological history of Mallorca, focusing on the Middle to Late Pleistocene period and its impact on the landscape and climate of the island. The Quaternary, particularly, the Last Interglacial, represents a relatively short timeframe on the global chronological scale, yet it is notable for its climatic instability and complex alternation of glacial and interglacial phases, leading to fluctuations in sea levels. During the last interglacial, millennial-scale fluctuations, known as Dansgaard–Oeschger and Heinrich events, occurred. Aeolianites are thought to have formed during periods of sparse vegetation cover and abundant sediment availability from the sea bed or platform (Heinrich events), while colluvial deposits and paleosols are believed to represent periods of reduced sediment supply and enhanced pedogenesis (Dansgaard–Oeschger events). These different deposits reflect climatic shifts and sea-level changes, offering insights into the environmental history of the island. Fossil evidence, including Strombus bubonius (currently known as Thetystrombus lauts) or "Senegalese hosts," reveals past warm climatic fluctuations, particularly during the Last Interglacial. Myotragus balearicus exemplifies evolutionary adaptation and isolation on the island, offering a unique perspective on its paleontological legacy. The integration of stratigraphic characteristics and literature research on Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating techniques provides a comprehensive temporal framework, spanning from Marine Isotope Stage 6 (MIS 6) to Marine Isotope Stage 2 (MIS 2), enabling the precise dating of geological events and a stratigraphic correlation. Laoya Cave is a significant prehistoric human site in Guizhou Province, Southwest China, and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and a Bayesian depositional model were used to update the chronology of the cave. Six OSL samples were dated to 16.7 ± 1.2, 18.0 ± 1.1, 28.8 ± 2.3, 32.1 ± 2.8, 57.7 ± 6.5, and 74.0 ± 5.9 ka, respectively, and the Bayesian deposition model has provided a coherent chronological framework, revealing boundaries with median ages of 18.5, 25.0, 27.5, 28.6, 29.9, and 74.4 ka for Boundaries 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5, 5/6, and 6/9, respectively. By comparing the new chronological framework with the related records of paleoclimate and human activities, we gain insight into the relationship between the environment and Paleolithic hominins at different times. During relatively warmer periods, humans tend to spread, while in relative colder climates, they tend to rely more heavily on caves and employ hunting strategies with an equal age distribution. These survival strategies help humans prevent the threats of cold weather. Additionally, the analysis of OSL dating results uncovers a discrepancy between OSL and accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14C) dating methods, with AMS 14C dates generally appearing older at later ages (<∼30 ka). Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials are expected to address triplet‐related losses in electrically driven organic lasers, as the electrically generated triplets in the materials can be converted to radiative singlets through reverse intersystem crossing (RISC). This offers a way to bypass triplet absorption and annihilation in organic semiconductor lasers (OSLs). In this work, two versatile TADF emitters 4tCzPz and 4αCbPz for application in organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) and OSLs are presented. Both emitters possess moderately high singlet‐triplet energy gap, ΔEST (≈0.30 eV) and show high photoluminescence quantum yields, ΦPL, in solution and solid‐state and prominent stimulated emission features in solution. Films of 4tCzPz and 4αCbPz doped in mCBP show an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) threshold of 41.0 and 44.9 µJ/cm2, respectively. The OLEDs with 4tCzPz and 4αCbPz emit with peak wavelengths of 492 and 475 nm, respectively, and show corresponding maximum external quantum efficiencies, EQEmax, of 24.6 and 21.3%. Investigating fault deformation in Late-Quaternary sediments provide valuable data to seismic hazard analysis especially relevant for the urban areas. Integration of displacement of geomorphic markers and ages of Quaternary sediment is needed to measure deformation rates accurately. In order to produce data on intermediate-term deformation rates along the Sabzpoushan Fault Zone (SFZ) situated in the Zagros Mountains of south-west Iran, the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating technique was applied to the tectonically influenced terraces of the Mianrod River passing through the fault zone. Field evidence and satellite imagery revealed that geomorphic markers include strike-slip displacement of terraces, different levels of the fluvial markers, shifting in Bakhtiary Formation, fast change in trend of the river and expansion of erosional gully, deformed horizontally along the Fault Zone. These geomorphic indices suggest that Mianrod River deflected along the SFZ as a consequence of faulting during multiple faulting cycles. The OSL dates obtained from the study area indicate that strike-slip deformation rate along the Sabzpoushan Fault Zone is 1–2.8 ± 0.2 mm y−1 (for ∼100 ka). It is suggestive from the research that a significant part of this estimated rate of deformation results from aseismic crustal deformation, but the areas with the highest likelihood of the Sabzpoushan near-surface deformation, as well as the west parts of the city of Shiraz, should be considered as high seismic hazard areas.

The present work characterized pure halloysite clay mineral nanotubes (HNT) and their composites with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as ionizing radiation dosimeters using the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) phenomena. We also explored the HNT’s capacity to scavenge heavy metals from solutions to incorporate silver ions in its structure and produce silver nanoparticles in the HNTs, aiming to increase the HNT’s OSL intensity. Reflectance spectra in the UV-visible region, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy were performed to confirm the formation of AgNPs attached to the nanotubes. Furthermore, the OSL signals revealed an enhanced OSL intensity in samples containing AgNPs, possibly associated with the silver nanostructures’ plasmonic properties. The structure and age of remains of two ancient walls located in the city of Nan, a former part of the Lanna Kingdom in modern northern Thailand, were investigated. The remains differ in appearance with a well-preserved brick wall present at Mahawong Road (MHW), while an earthwork with a brick reinforcement core is found at Phaya Wat Temple (PWT). We employed an electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) survey and optically stimulated luminescence dating (OSL) to determine the buried structure of the earthwork at the PWT site and the production age of bricks from both locations. The ERT results reveal lateral heterogeneous resistivity domains cross-cutting the wall, which presumably relates to the construction of a dam. According to OSL dating, the PWT wall was likely built during the time of the war with Burma that ultimately resulted in a foreign occupation of Nan in the sixteenth century. This structure played a role in both flood mitigation and military defence of the city. The structure at MHW represents a city wall that was built at the end of the nineteenth century after Nan was relocated to its present position and rather reflects representative and social needs. Alluvial fans are rapidly evolving landforms sensitive to changes in tectonic and climatic conditions. Their study provides useful information to unravel the landscape evolution of lowlands and mountainous regions where sediment transported by rivers originates. The chronology of alluvial fan deposits is crucial for the flood risk assessment of those populations settled on this type of dynamic landform. Here we provide (1) a review of the literature concerning climatic reconstructions for the Sierra de Gredos, (2) optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages and (3) topographical analysis to reconstruct the recent events that built-up the alluvial fans of the southern sector of Sierra de Gredos (Central Spain). The area is tectonically active and has a relatively simple lithology given by a deformed and fractured Paleozoic granite massif that was heavily eroded by Quaternary glacial advances. Our OSL results indicate that the recent build-up events span from ca. 5 ka up to the end of the 19th century. The chronology of events is consistent with the climatic change reported for Central Spain, where humidity seems to be a primary control in the recent activity of the alluvial fans. Additionally, topographic analysis on a 5-m-resolution LIDAR DEM help us to propose that, tectonics have been a major control of Gredos alluvial fans in a long-term scale, longer than the Holocene but, since the mid-Holocene to the present, climate is a primary control on their landscape evolution. We conclude that current climatic conditions favor fan degradation for the Gredos alluvial fans rather than sediment transport and fan aggradation. The present study emphasizes the necessity of supplementing OSL chronologies with other long-term geochronological techniques to confine the constructive periods of fans for the entire Holocene. Multiple parabolic sand dune fields formed in Arctic Sweden after the last deglaciation, facilitated by an abundance of loose glaciofluvial sediment, limited vegetation cover and strong winds. Following initial stabilisation, these dunes underwent repeated reworking after fire events, as evidenced by the presence of buried soils, charcoal layers and redeposited sands in the dune stratigraphy. These reworking events may be driven by wider climate forcing; however, to date, no chronological framework exists for this activity in Sweden. As such, here, we apply quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of Arctic Swedish sand dunes using two dunes at the sites of Vastakielinen and Jorggástat. Resultant double‐SAR (single aliquot regenerative dose) quartz OSL ages are in good agreement with independent ages provided by 14C dating of charcoal fragments recovered from charcoal layers within the dunes, and we conclude that the chosen protocol is generally well suited for dating aeolian reworking of dune sediments in Arctic Sweden. While feldspar contamination limits precise age assignment for initial dune movement, our results nonetheless suggest repeated and long‐lasting aeolian activity in Arctic Sweden throughout the Holocene and, although there are differences in detail, further suggest some general trends in terms of dune stability and reworking over Arctic Fennoscandia. In this study, we provide the first absolute ages for a Big Circle megalithic structure in Jordan, using rock surface luminescence dating of the buried surface of rocks collected from circle J4 in southern Jordan. Five rocks were used for this study. All rocks showed evidence of previous daylight exposure before being used in the construction of the circle. The exposure was sufficient to bleach the latent luminescence signal to a negligible level compared to the subsequent burial dose. Three rocks gave indistinguishable ages, and were last exposed to daylight in 1500 ± 100 BCE; this is very likely to be the date of circle construction. Two others gave younger ages, indicating later disturbance or reworking. These new results provide very strong evidence for construction during the Late Bronze Age, and refute the earlier hypothesis of construction during Umayyad period (661–750 CE) as a hunting trap. Background: Dosimetry in ultra‐high dose rate (UHDR) electron beamlines poses a significant challenge owing to the limited usability of standard dosimeters in high dose and high dose‐per‐pulse (DPP) applications. Purpose: In this study, Al2O3:C nanoDot optically stimulated luminescent dosimeters (OSLDs), single‐use powder‐based LiF:Mg,Ti thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs), and Gafchromic EBT3 film were evaluated at extended dose ranges (up to 40 Gy) in conventional dose rate (CONV) and UHDR beamlines to determine their usability for calibration and dose verification in the setting of FLASH radiation therapy. Methods: OSLDs and TLDs were evaluated against established dose‐rate–independent Gafchromic EBT3 film with regard to the potential influence of mean dose rate, instantaneous dose rate, and DPP on signal response. The dosimeters were irradiated at CONV or UHDR conditions on a 9‐MeV electron beam. Under UHDR conditions, different settings of pulse repetition frequency (PRF), pulse width (PW), and pulse amplitude were used to characterize the individual dosimeters' response in order to isolate their potential dependencies on dose, dose rate, and DPP. Results: The OSLDs, TLDs, and Gafchromic EBT3 film were found to be suitable at a dose range of up to 40 Gy without any indication of saturation in signal. The response of OSLDs and TLDs in UHDR conditions were found to be independent of mean dose rate (up to 1440 Gy/s), instantaneous dose rate (up to 2 MGy/s), and DPP (up to 7 Gy), with uncertainties on par with nominal values established in CONV beamlines (± 4%). In cross‐comparing the response of OSLDs, TLDs and Gafchromic film at dose rates of 0.18–245 Gy/s, the coefficient of variation or relative standard deviation in the measured dose between the three dosimeters (inter‐dosimeter comparison) was found to be within 2%. Conclusions: We demonstrated the dynamic range of OSLDs, TLDs, and Gafchromic film to be suitable up to 40 Gy, and we developed a protocol that can be used to accurately translate the measured signal in each respective dosimeter to dose. OSLDs and powdered TLDs were shown to be viable for dosimetric measurement in UHDR beamlines, providing dose measurements with accuracies on par with Gafchromic EBT3 film and their concurrent use demonstrating a means for redundant dosimetry in UHDR conditions. Background: The continued development of new radiotherapy techniques requires dosimetry systems that satisfy increasingly rigorous requirements, such as high sensitivity, wide dose range, and high spatial resolution. An emerging requirement is the ability to read out doses in three dimensions (3D) with high precision and spatial resolution. A few dosimetry systems with 3D capabilities are available, but their application in a clinical workflow is limited for various reasons, primarily originating from their chemical nature. The search for a 3D dosimetry system with potential for clinical implementation is thus ongoing. Purpose: To demonstrate the capabilities of a novel optically‐stimulated‐luminescence (OSL)‐based 3D dosimetry system capable of measuring radiation doses in clinically relevant volumes. Methods: A laser‐based readout system was used to measure dose distributions delivered by both photons and protons, utilizing the OSL from a 50×50×50$50\times 50\times 50$ mm 3$^3$ YSO:Ce crystal. A homogeneous treatment plan consisting of two opposing photon fields was used to establish an inhomogeneity correction map of the crystal response and demonstrated the accuracy and precision of the system. The crystal was additionally irradiated with a photon treatment plan consisting of three overlapping 10×10$10\times 10$ mm 2$^2$ fields delivered from different angles, and a proton treatment plan consisting of four pencil beams with energies 90 MeV (×2$\times 2$), 115 MeV, and 140 MeV. The system abilities were quantified by comparing the 3D‐resolved measurements to Monte Carlo simulations. Results: The dose map reproducibility of the system was found to be within 2% including both statistical and systematic errors. The measurements yielded integrated doses from a volume of 50×50×40$50\times 50\times 40$ mm 3$^3$ with voxel volumes of just 0.28×0.28×0.50$0.28\times 0.28\times 0.50$ mm 3$^3$. An excellent agreement between the 3D‐resolved measurements and the simulations was found for both photon‐ and proton‐irradiation. Conclusions: The capabilities of the devised system for measuring clinically relevant fields of photons and proton pencil beams within a clinically relevant volume were demonstrated. The system poses as a promising candidate for clinical applications, and enables future research in the field of OSL‐based tissue‐equivalent 3D dosimetry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prograded barriers are coastal landforms with a worldwide distribution that provide a paleoenvironmental record within a sequence of successive ridges and intervening swales. Most barriers with variable terrestrial morphologies, also known as complex barriers, have been poorly studied. At the main entrance of Western Port, a bay in southeastern Australia, a morphologically complex barrier was formed as a function of its somewhat sheltered position and orientation in relation to sporadic swells and tidal circulation. LiDAR‐derived topography shows highly truncated and asymmetrical ridges both across and along the Somers–Sandy Point barrier plain. These uncommon morphologies are associated with an intricate hydrodynamic circulation subject to sporadic storms approaching at a sharp angle to the shoreline that eliminate a significant part of the sedimentary record but also redistribute vast quantities of sand to the downdrift shoreline, and a large and variable sandy bank that undergoes intense sediment movement. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating within a limited area on the western side revealed an age of ~2600 years for the innermost dated ridge, located about halfway across the plain. Significant erosion of the ridges' record occurred on the western side of the barrier between 2600 and 700 years ago and between 600 and 240 years ago, whereas undated ridges on the eastern side were preserved. This creates an opportunity for future research on past erosional events that would be of great value for coastal management and adaptation. Textural and elemental (XRF) sediment characteristics suggest that the type of material provided for barrier accretion remained the same throughout the late Holocene. Given the sustained growth of the barrier and other sandy parts of the bay, a net supply of marine sand from Bass Strait must have occurred. The eastern Great Lakes Late Quaternary timescale is based on older thermoluminescence dates and on uncalibrated radiocarbon dates from extensive sections along the north shores of Lakes Erie and Ontario. New optically stimulated luminescence dates from Late Quaternary delta sediments from the north shores of Lake Erie at Sand Hills Park give consistent ages of 23.5 to 20.5 ka. This is 4 to 7 ka older than previously assigned based on lithologic correlation with 16.5 ka calibrated radiocarbon dated sediments 5 km to the west at Vanderven. On the existing eastern Great Lakes stratigraphy, it puts deposition of these Sand Hills Park sediments in the Erie interstadial and not in the fluctuating postglacial glacial retreat of the Mackinaw phase to which the Vanderven sediments belong. The Sand Hills delta and underlying diamicts must have been overridden by the Porty Bruce advance at 18 ka. IntCal20 calibration of existing radiocarbon ages suggests that the physical stratigraphic relations of the various Wisconsin units are accurate and that the existing timescale is simply too young. The analysis of exceptionally well-preserved visible clastic laminations in deep alluvial sediments at Kempsey, Worcestershire (UK), allows a new high-resolution analysis of late-Holocene flood-history in the largest UK catchment, as well as local human response. At the sample site over 4.5 m of sandy-silt overbank-alluvium accumulated on the floodplain and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of the upper 2.25 m demonstrates accretion from the late 14th century CE onwards. Sub-centimetre to centimetre resolution multi-proxy sediment analysis (loss on ignition, magnetic susceptibility, particle size, ITRAX and portable XRF) demonstrate clear variations in depositional history over the last millennium due to channel stability. Between c. 1380 and 1550 CE overbank sedimentation was driven by lower energy flood events, with negligible effect from climatic conditions during the Spörer Minimum (1460–1550 CE). After c. 1550 CE the magnitude of flooding events increased and by c. 1610 CE, the start of the visible sub-centimetre laminations, the accumulation rate regularly exceeded 3 mm year−1, which increased to 4.5 mm year−1 between c. 1690 and 1710 CE, and 3 and 3.5 mm year−1 between c. 1790 and 1840 CE before alluviation was altered by an embankment. The greatest extent of coarse overbank deposition and increased accumulation rate occur concurrently with periods of climatic instability associated with the Maunder (1645–1715 CE) and Dalton (1790–1820 CE) Minima, the periods of largest historical floods and during the intensification of arable cultivation across the middle Severn catchment. This data correlates well with other sites in the catchment suggesting that these are basin-wide forcing-responses. We also present evidence that this catchment-wide hydro-geomorphological history had local effects in shifting the geographical focus of an important settlement away from its historic floodplain edge location – which can be viewed as an adaptation to the flood risk. Purpose: The dose expansion methods as the skin flash and virtual bolus were used to solve intrafraction movement for breast planning due to breathing motion. We investigated the skin dose in each planning method by using optically stimulated luminescence on an in-house moving phantom for breast cancer treatment in tomotherapy. The impact of respiratory motion on skin dose between static and dynamic phantom's conditions was evaluated. Methods: A phantom was developed with movement controlled by the respirator for generating the respiratory waveforms to simulate respiratory motion. Five optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters were placed on the phantom surface to investigate the skin dose for the TomoDirect and TomoHelical under static and dynamic conditions. Eight treatment plans were generated with and without skin flash or virtual bolus by varying the thickness. The difference in skin dose between the two phantom conditions for each plan was explored. Results: All plans demonstrated a skin dose of more than 87% of the prescription dose under static conditions. However, the skin dose was reduced to 84.1% (TomoDirect) and 78.9% (TomoHelical) for dynamic conditions. The treatment plans without skin flash or virtual bolus showed significant skin dose differences under static and dynamic conditions by 4.83% (TomoDirect) and 9.43% (TomoHelical), whereas the skin flash with two leaves (TomoDirect 2L) or virtual bolus of at least 1.0 cm thickness (VB1.0) application compensated the skin dose in case of intrafraction movements by presenting a skin dose difference of less than 2% between the static and dynamic conditions. Conclusion: The skin dose was reduced under dynamic conditions due to breathing motion. The skin flash method with TomoDirect 2L or virtual bolus application with 1.0 cm thickness was useful for maintaining skin dose following the prescription by compensating for intrafraction movement due to respiratory motion for breast cancer in tomotherapy. A thin (20–80 cm), patchy layer of silt-rich sediment occurs at the surface throughout Svartedalen, a nature reserve 30 km north of Gothenburg, Sweden. This surface silt mantles a bedrock-dominated, fracture-valley landscape. Using data from grain-size analysis, OSL dating and detrital-zircon U-Pb dating, we argue that the silt is loess sourced from glacial sediment that was eroded from local bedrock. The sediment has a grain-size distribution typical of wind-blown silt and is especially similar to thin deposits of loess overlying coarser material. OSL ages on five samples range from 1 to 8 ka, although analysis of equivalent dose distributions of one may suggest an age as old as 11 ka. The dates may represent true depositional ages and represent several Holocene eolian events. However, we consider as more likely that the loess was deposited during deglaciation, and quartz-grain signals have been partially reset during bioturbation. U-Pb ages on 273 zircon grains from the loess show prominent peaks at 1.6 and 1.8 Ga, as well as smaller numbers of grains from 1.0 to 1.6 Ga. These ages match dates from the Idefjord Terrane which comprises the bedrock of the study area. We argue that during ice-margin retreat, debris in the glacier was dominated by locally derived debris. This glacial sediment was left in thin patches uplands and particularly in large ice-marginal deltas. These deposits served as the proximal source for the loess. The presence of thin loess in Svartedalen suggests loess to be common in soils of southwest Sweden. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Pannonian Basin was located in the southernmost, disputed limit of permafrost during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). In the western part of the basin, over an area of 1,200 km2, more than 150 sites with polygonal patterned ground were surveyed, and 72 sediment samples from forms identified as relict sand wedges were collected. Ten optically stimulated luminescence ages were obtained from the infills, while morphometric analyses were also carried out on satellite images. Our study revealed that the polygonal networks developed in several phases, from 15.01 ± 1.68 to 23.0 ± 1.7 ka. The polygons have an average diameter of 13–23 m and are mainly present on flat surfaces, intruding into the gravelly, alluvial host of the paleo‐Rába. Statistical analyses highlighted the short transportation period of the sandy infill and multiple sediment provenances. This study adds further data to assess the presence of permafrost or deep seasonal frost and to the interpretation of the LGM in the central European periglacial domain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An essential step in evaluating and comparing the performance of two passive radiation dosimeter types, thermosluminescent (TLD) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), used by workers in environments with ionizing radiation for individual radiological monitoring and control of external exposure at various times (cumulative dose for 1 month), is to compare the measured dose accuracy, energy response, and coefficient of variation.In fact this performance study consists in determining the accuracy of both R(10) and R(0.07) which are considered as the ratios of the measured dose (Hp(10) or Hp(0.07)) to the delivered dose (Hp(10) or Hp(0.07)) for each photon energy. The validity of the results of this test is based on the acceptance limits of the ICRP and the international standard IEC-62387. The relative energy response used is normalized to the 137Cs 662 keV energy to find which energy response is closest to the ideal case, and the coefficient of variation that allows to determine the statistical fluctuation of the Hp(10) and Hp(0.07) doses.The results of the accuracy test for the OSL and TLD dosimeters are acceptable because they fall within the ICRP limits. For the energy response, the OSL performs better than the TLD for Hp(10) and Hp(0.07), and for the coefficient of variation, the OSL satisfies the requirements of ISO 62387 for both Hp(10) and Hp(0.07), while the TLD satisfies these requirements only for the measurement of Hp (0.07).

The Veiki moraine in northern Sweden, a geomorphologically distinct landscape of ice-walled lake plains, has been interpreted to represent the former margin of an intermediate-sized pre–Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) Fennoscandian ice sheet, but its age is debated as either marine isotope stage (MIS) 5c or MIS 3. We have applied optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and radiocarbon dating to four sites within the northern part of the Veiki moraine to establish its chronology. The radiocarbon ages provide only minimum ages and most OSL ages have low precision due to poor luminescence characteristics and problems with incomplete bleaching, leading to two alternative ages. In either case, the OSL dating places the Veiki moraine formation in MIS 3 (best estimate 56–39 ka). Sedimentation continued in the low-lying centers of some plateaus (ice-walled lake plains) during MIS 3 and during the Holocene, with a break during the Last Glacial Maximum when the area was ice covered. We speculatively constrain the broad timing further by relating the sequence of events to other climate records. We suggest that ice margin retreat to the west of the Veiki area took place during Greenland Interstadial (GI) 16.1 (58.0–56.5 ka) and that limited ice advances, which led to debris-covered ice margins in the Veiki zone, occurred during the following stadials GS-16.1 to 15.1 (56.5–54.2 ka). The GI-14 interstadial, which began 54.2 ka and lasted ~5.9 ka, could then be the period when the ice within the dead-ice landscape melted, first leading to ice-walled lakes and later to the inversed topography characteristic of the Veiki landscape.

'BayLum' is an R-package that facilitates the application of Bayesian models to the field of OSL dating. Here we present two recent feature updates to 'BayLum', significantly reducing computation time and improving general use. The first feature allows users to parallelize the computations involved in the MCMC sampling of values, while the second introduces the ability to extend a 'BayLum' model, which has run to completion without converging. Intense aeolian processes in arid and semi-arid environments play an essential role in the preservation and destruction of archeological sites. This is especially the case in the lower basin of the Colorado River at the eastern Pampa-Patagonia Transition of Argentina, as is illustrated by geoarchaeological and chronostratigraphic studies at a mid-Holocene hunter-gatherer site, La Modesta, where aeolian processes strongly influence the archeological record in dune sediments. At La Modesta, surface archaeological materials are numerous and well preserved, although the stratigraphic record is incomplete. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of sediments that contain cultural material provides a chronology dating from ca. 8.2 ka but shows one or more hiatuses from ca. 6–2 ka in the sedimentary succession. Intense morphogenesis related to arid climates likely caused gaps in sedimentation, affecting the integrity and resolution of the archaeological record. This study helps explain mid-Holocene archaeological discontinuities throughout central Argentina and highlights the importance of considering taphonomic and geologic biases when dealing with the absence or reduction of the archaeological record in dryland regions. The objective of this work is to review and assess the potential of Mg B 4 O 7 :Ce,Li to fill in the gaps where the need for a new material for optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimetry has been identified. We offer a critical assessment of the operational properties of Mg B 4 O 7 :Ce,Li for OSL dosimetry, as reviewed in the literature and complemented by measurements of thermoluminescence spectroscopy, sensitivity, thermal stability, lifetime of the luminescence emission, dose response at high doses (>1000 Gy), fading and bleachability. Overall, compared with Al 2 O 3 : C , for example, Mg B 4 O 7 :Ce,Li shows a comparable OSL signal intensity following exposure to ionizing radiation, a higher saturation limit (ca 7000 Gy) and a shorter luminescence lifetime (31.5 ns). Mg B 4 O 7 :Ce,Li is, however, not yet an optimum material for OSL dosimetry, as it exhibits anomalous fading and shallow traps. Further optimization is therefore needed, and possible avenues of investigation encompass gaining a better understanding of the roles of the synthesis route and dopants and of the nature of defects. The Kalabagh Fault forms a lateral offset in the Main Frontal Thrust in the Sub-Himalayan area of Pakistan, forming a push-up block within the stepover zone of its segments. Deformed sediments along the frontal part of this push-up block have cross cutting relations with morphotectonic and paleoseismic features. These sediments are dated using luminescence dating methods. The post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence (post-IR IRSL) of K-feldspar was used for samples representing these sedimentary units. For stratigraphically younger sediments with partially-bleached pIRIR signal, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) of quartz was applied with the minimum age model (MAM). These ages are used to illustrate the timing of development of the push-up block, the westward diversion of the Indus River and Holocene earthquakes along the Kalabagh Fault (KBF). The deformed sediments from the mountain front at Larkakki are older than those of Khairabad and Ghundi. These age estimates are consistent with the chronological order of the tectonic deformations in the stepover zone of the Kalabagh Fault. Age estimates and correlation of the sedimentary units suggest the emergence of the push-up block in the stepover zone during the past ∼0.5 Ma. Active faulting and development of the ramp along the Kalabagh Fault has diverted the course of the Indus River towards the west at a displacement rate of 12–15 cm/a during last ∼140 ka. Luminescence data indicate Holocene timing for the earthquakes along the Kalabagh Fault, which are diachronous and suggest differential movements along the segments of the fault. Sodmein Playa is one of the rare Pleistocene open‐air sites in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. Based on the associated stone artefact material, it could be assigned to the Middle Stone Age/Last Interglacial. However, it has not yet been possible to clarify whether the sediments at the basin originated during the Pleistocene or later during Holocene wet phases. Our integrative approach combining Optically Stimulated Luminescence chronology, and cryptotephra analysis, allows us to link the environmental archive of Sodmein Playa with the site of Sodmein Cave. Sodmein Playa indicates wetter climate conditions starting around 9 ka with a (relative) maximum around 7 ka, in line with the general framework of the Holocene Humid Period in Northeast Africa. Despite the climatic similarity, regional environmental differences can still be identified and the effective available water around Sodmein Playa is reduced. The results are well integrated into the current archaeological knowledge with the change from hunter‐gatherers to herders during the Holocene in the area. Analyses of cryptotephra reveal a wide range of source regions, including Eastern and Central Anatolian, the Azores, and the Aegean, as well as those which remain uncorrelated. Badlands are dynamic landforms that cause soil loss over extensive areas. In this study, we analyze recent sediment mobilization in a badland area by using a novel approach that integrates fallout 137Cs and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). We assess how erosion and sediment storage operate over the Tepezalá volcano, a tephra cone located in central Mexico. We analyzed a set of sediment samples extracted from the surface of an altitudinal sequence with different land uses to explore how landscape management practices relate to erosion and, depth profiles from local sinks, to detect patterns of sediment mobilization and sedimentation. We compared 137Cs and OSL results with reference values to evaluate whether erosion or deposition is predominant and to assess how deep the erosive processes in the landscape are. Results from fallout 137Cs values indicate that in those badlands with implemented actions to mitigate erosion, sediment is retained. The high luminescence values show that the edaphic soil has been flushed away, and subsoil crops out in some of the sampled sites. For the case of depth profiles, maximum values of 137Cs coincide with high luminescence values, suggesting that in such sites, the sediment was mobilized during rapid incision episodes that caused widespread erosion of the landscape. We detected at least three episodes of rapid incision in 10 years of sediment record. We propose that using 137Cs and OSL together can provide valuable information of the sediment transport in settings dominated by fast erosion as do occur for the case of badlands. As new alternative optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) materials to Eu-doped CsBr and Tl-doped RbBr, we synthesized In-doped RbBr transparent ceramics by spark plasma sintering. All the ceramics had a transmittance of approximately 60% from 300 to 800 nm. In its photoluminescence (PL) and scintillation spectra, In-doped RbBr showed an emission peak at 500 nm due to ³P1→¹S0 transitions of In+ ions. The PL and scintillation decay time constants were approximately 4.1 μs. OSL was observed upon optical stimulation at 700 nm. Background: Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimeters produce a signal linear to the dose, which fades with time due to the spontaneous recombination of energetically unstable electron/hole traps. When used for radiotherapy (RT) applications, fading affects the signal-to-dose conversion and causes an error in the final dose measurement. Moreover, the signal fading depends to some extent on treatment-specific irradiation conditions such as irradiation times. Purpose: In this work, a dose calibration function for a novel OSL film dosimeter was derived accounting for signal fading. The proposed calibration allows to perform dosimetry evaluation for different RT treatment regimes. Methods: A novel BaFBr:Eu2+-based OSL film (Zeff, 6 MV = 4.7) was irradiated on a TrueBeam STx using a 6 MV beam with setup:01 gantry angle, 90 cm SSD, 10 cm depth, 10 × 10 cm2 field. A total of 86 measurements were acquired for dose-rates (D1) of 600, 300, and 200 MU/min for irradiation times (tir) of 0.2, 1, 2, 4.5, 12, and 23 min and various readout times (tscan) between 4 and 1440 min from the start of the exposure (beam-on time). The OSL signal, S(D1, tir, tscan), wasmodeled via robust nonlinear regression, and two different power-law fading models were tested, respectively, independent (linear model) and dependent on the specific tir (delivery-dependent model). Results: After 1 day from the exposure, the error on the dose measurement can be as high as 48% if a fading correction is not considered. The fading contribution was characterized by two accurate models with adjusted-R2 of 0.99. The difference between the two models is <4.75% for all tir and tscan. For different beam-on times, 3, 10.5, and 20 min, the optimum tscan was calculated in order to achieve a signal-to-dose conversion with a model-related error <1%. In the case of a 3 min irradiation, this condition is already met when the OSLfilm is scanned immediately after the end of the irradiation. For an irradiation of 10.5 and 20 min, the minimum scanning time to achieve this model-related error increases, respectively, to 30 and 90 min. Under these conditions, the linear model can be used for the signal-to-dose conversion as an approximation of the delivery-dependent model. The signal-to-dose function, D(Mi,j,tscan), has a residual mean error of 0.016, which gives a residual dose uncertainty of 0.5 mGy in the region of steep signal fading (i.e.,tscan = 4 min). The function of two variables is representable as a dose surface depending on the signal (Mi, j) measured for each i, j-pixel and the time of scan (tscan). Conclusions: The calibration of a novel OSL-film usable for dosimetry in different RT treatments was corrected for its signal fading with two different models.A linear calibration model independent from the treatment-specific irradiation condition results in a model-related error <1% if a proper scanning time is used for each irradiation length. Background: EOSedge™* (EOS Imaging, Paris, France) is an X-ray imaging system using automatic exposure control (AEC) with tube current modulation, in order to optimize dose deposition in patients. Purpose: This study aims at characterizing EOSedge organ dose deposition in comparison to a digital radiography (DR) system and the previous EOS system (EOS-1st generation), in relation to their respective image quality levels. Method: Organ doses were measured in an anthropomorphic female adult phantom and a 5-year-old pediatric phantom using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimeters, which were carefully calibrated within the studied energy range. Organ doses were recorded on the EOSedge and the Fuji Visionary DRF (Fujifilm Medical Systems U.S.A., Inc, Lexington, MA). The resulting effective doses were compared to the EOS-1st-generation values present in the literature. Image quality assessment was carried out on end-user images. Quantitative image quality metrics were computed for all tested modalities on a quality assurance phantom. Qualitative assessment of EOSedge image quality was based on anthropomorphic phantom acquisitions against the EOS-1st-generation system, and on clinical images against the tested DR system. Results: For a full-spine exam, and on the female adult phantom (respectively, the pediatric phantom), an effective dose of 92 Sv (respectively, 32 Sv) was obtained on EOSedge, and 572 Sv (respectively, 179 Sv) on the DR system; these values were compared to effective dose values of 290 Sv (respectively, 200 Sv) from the literature on EOS-1st generation, leading to an effective dose reduction factor of 6 with respect to the DR system, and of 3-6 with respect to EOS-1st generation. EOSedge provides the best compromise between contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and dose, with more consistent CNR values than the other tested modalities, in a range of attenuation from 10 to 40 cm of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Within this range, EOSedge is also comparable to DR for 10 and 20 cm of PMMA, and better than DR for 30 and 40 cm of PMMA, both in terms of spatial resolution and low-contrast detection. The anatomical landmarks of interest in the follow-up of spinal deformities can be detected in all tested modalities. Conclusion: Results showed that EOSedge provides significant dose reduction factors for full spine imaging in both adults and children compared to the other tested modalities, without compromising image quality. We believe that this work could help raise awareness on the capabilities of modern X-ray systems, when equipped with appropriate AEC strategies, to perform ultra-low-dose, long-axis images. The current distribution of dune fields and sandy lands in northeastern China is closely related to the hydrological environment with fluvial processes often providing sediments for dune formation. The Keerqin Sandy Land (also known as Horqin) incised by the tributaries of the West Liao River and located at the northern boundary of East Asian summer monsoon (EAM) in northeastern China, is sensitive to monsoon system variability. As such, aeolian-fluvial-paleosol sequences in northeastern China are valuable geological archives for reconstructing river system behavior and palaeoclimate since the Late Quaternary. Here we show from analysis of these archives that fluvial systems were active at ∼11 ka likely due to the occurrence of floods at the end of the last glaciation. This was followed by frequent channel migration within the floodplains around 7∼5 ka associated with mid-Holocene monsoon precipitation fluctuation and higher humidity. Sediments from this active Holocene fluvial system along with a more humid climate produced conditions in the Keerqin Sandy Land that resulted in extensive paleosol formation. These findings are consistent with the timing and development of paleosols in other sandy lands in northeastern China. Glacial Lake Agassiz strandlines expressed in LiDAR-based digital elevation models are detailed records of past water level change that reflect outlet incision and switching. Detailed 1:24,000 scale surficial geology mapping of a small section of coastline east of Crookston, MN, reveals strandlines of the Lockhart, Emerson, and Nipigon phases. Other than the Campbell and youngest Tintah Beach, the strandlines are not identified using the naming convention established near the southern outlet (Herman, Norcross, Upham, Tintah) because of the increasing number of strandlines northwards. The strandlines, for the most part, naturally exist in elevation clusters, and are assigned to 11 strandline groups (SG). SGs 1–9 are of Lockhart age at elevations higher than the Tintah Campbell Gap (TCGap). Elevation gaps between SGs are ~1–3 m, greater than the 0.5–2 m gap between successive strandlines within a SG. The many (n = 70) small, low-relief strandlines are interpreted to record nearly continuous incision of the southern outlet sill during Lockhart Phase. Beach ridges are estimated to have formed every ~20 years. The TCGap is ~4 km wide in the study area. The Campbell Beach of Emerson Phase age consists of several embayments, beach ridges and the large Melvin Spit. Based on morphological comparison with the modern Gull Point Spit in the Lake Erie basin, the Melvin Spit took ~500 years to form, during which water level dropped 8 m. The Nipigon Phase strandlines are small discontinuous beach ridges. North-south elevation plots of the most continuous strandline in each SG records southward slopes of 1.1 to 0.19 m/km explained by differential glacioisostatic adjustment active during strandline development that decreases through time at lower elevations. The three highest elevation OSL dates agree with published ages for the older strandlines (~14.4 ± 1.5 ka), but younger dated Tintah, Campbell, and sub-Campbell beaches are 2–5 ka older than published ages. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) datasets acquired at 11 sites at frequencies between 100 and 500 MHz, representing a cumulative distance of 11 km, form the basis for a simple beach ridge formation model augmented with hand auger holes and shallow hand-dug pits. Six radar facies (RF) were identified, dominated by RF2 which consists of lakeward-dipping reflections with a downlapping lower boundary recording a depositional regressive system, and RF4 which consists of landward-dipping reflections with a downlapping lower boundary recording overwash deposits from proposed storm events. Spit orientations and GPR data indicate littoral drift was southwards with offshore bars possibly nucleating successive beach ridges upon ~1-m drops in water level. Luminescence properties of strontium fluoride transparent ceramics with various TbF 3 amounts (0.1, 0.5, and 1 %) were investigated. Scintillation peaks derived from the electronic transitions between 4f levels in Tb3+ were observed. The observed scintillation decay times of approximately 8.3 ms were typical for the electronic transitions in Tb3+. Furthermore, the Tb-doped strontium fluoride transparent ceramics showed thermoluminescence and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) with Tb3+ serving as the recombination center. The most intense thermoluminescence signal was detected from the 0.1 % Tb-doped transparent ceramic within the range of 0.01–100 mGy. In classic loess areas research into dust deposition and concomitant environmental changes has a long history and numerous well-investigated loess-palaeosol sequences provide insights into Late Quaternary landscape responses to climatic change on orbital to centennial time scales. This contrasts with mountain regions, where an understanding of dust deposition under rapidly changing climatic and environmental conditions is much less developed. Here we describe two sediment records from the Austrian Alps that provide rare evidence for intramontane loess accumulation. Dust deposition has been numerically constrained to the Younger Dryas (YD) to earliest Holocene interval, making these sites the first proof of significant intramontane aeolian activity during this time interval in the Eastern Alps. At study site 1, located in the Northern Calcareous Alps, a loess layer 10–20 cm in thickness and laterally exposed over more than 300 m is sandwiched into an alluvial-fan succession. Two optically-stimulated luminescence ages of quartz and four radiocarbon ages of charcoals indicate loess accumulation during the Younger Dryas to earliest Holocene. This laterally extensive loess drape suggests much drier climatic conditions compared to today, which is corroborated by palynological investigations. Macro- and micro-charcoal particles within the loess indicate regional wildfires that might have exaggerated climatically induced sedimentary processes. The second site is a Mesolithic site located ∼30 km southeast of site 1. At site two, redeposited till and pebbly scree are sharply overlain by a few centimetre thick light-grey loess layer, which is capped by the archaeological living floor hosting 14C dated fireplaces suggesting human presence as early as 10.9 ± 0.2 cal ka BP. These radiocarbon ages in combination with single-grain IRSL dating of feldspar at site two suggests concomitant aeolian deposition at site 1 and 2. Recently, a widespread drape of loess deposited immediately subsequent to the LGM was described for the same sector of the Eastern Alps (Gild et al., 2018). The present study expands on these findings and provides evidence for the recurrence of loess deposition also during the YD to earliest Holocene, and suggests a highly sensitive response of the geomorphic system in mountain ranges to abrupt post-LGM climate fluctuations. We conclude that, in addition to moraine records of Alpine glaciers and speleothems that accurately chronicle Late Glacial temperature fluctuations, the spatio-temporal pattern of inner-Alpine loess deposits records the mode and sensitivity of landscape responses to such cooling events. OSL fading with storage time after irradiation remains a major obstacle in the development of ideal OSL materials. Dy and Eu co-doped NaMgF 3 are attractive candidates for various rare earth doped matrix materials. In this study, NaMgF 3 :Dy,Eu was synthesized by a solid-state reaction, and the effects of heating temperature, duration, atmosphere, and cooling rate on XRD, TL and OSL properties were studied. A simple, safe, efficient, and time-saving solid-state reaction was identified as a potential method for the preparation of NaMgF 3 :Dy,Eu, which could be optimally prepared by heating at 750 °C for 2 h under nitrogen atmosphere (2 l/min) followed by rapid cooling. The results show that NaMgF 3 :Dy,Eu has a more stable OSL response and an excellent TL glow curve, with only a 0.4% decrease in the OSL signal read after 1 d of dose irradiation compared to that immediately after irradiation, and a high main TL peak at ∼320 °C. It has been indicated the OSL signal in this material seems to be strongly related to the main TL peak. The material has a considerable OSL sensitivity and decay rate than the Luxel Detector. Optical, scintillation, and thermally and optically stimulated luminescence (TSL and OSL) properties of the undoped and Mn-doped MgGa 2 O 4 single crystals were investigated. All the crystals showed a luminescence peak at 500 nm caused by the 3d–3d transitions of Mn2+. The 0.03 %-Mn-doped crystal exhibited the highest OSL intensity, whereas the 0.3 %-Mn-doped crystal exhibited the highest photoluminescence quantum yield and scintillation intensity. There was an inverse relationship between the scintillation and OSL intensity in the 0.03–0.3 % Mn-doped crystals. The results indicated that the 0.03 % Mn-doped crystal exhibits the highest efficiency during carrier trapping. In the OSL dose response functions, the lower detection limit of the 0.03 % Mn-doped crystal was 0.01 mGy, which was comparable with that of a commercial product. • Optical, scintillation, and dosimetric properties of Mn-doped MgGa 2 O 4 single crystals were investigated. • The crystals showed the luminescence due to 3d-3d transitions of Mn2+. • The 0.03 % Mn-doped MgGa 2 O 4 single crystal showed the highest OSL intensity, and the detection limit was better than that of a commercial dosimeter. The aeolian landforms of the Mojave Desert in the SW USA have been studied in detail over the last three decades, particularly in terms of their relationship to the region's topography and Pleistocene climate / sediment supply histories, as well as wider developments, such as the aeolian "sediment state" concept. In this context, the evolution of the Mojave River and its associated palaeolakes is thought to have been a key control on long-term sediment supply to aeolian systems, and luminescence dating chronologies for a range of (resulting) aeolian landforms have been related to these hydrological changes. Here we argue that at least some of these aeolian chronologies need to be re-assessed. We focus on luminescence chronologies for aeolian landforms within and marginal to the Cady Mountains, a mountain block adjacent to the Mojave River and palaeolake Manix, east of Barstow, California. We demonstrate that quartz in this locale exhibits several malign luminescence properties, and that low temperature K-feldspar infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) consistently exhibits high anomalous fading rates. Both contribute to age underestimation. We address these issues via post-infrared IRSL (pIRIR) and post-isothermal post-IR (pIt-IR) analyses of K-feldspars. The resulting ages span the last ~120 ka and imply phases of aeolian activity of a substantially greater antiquity than previously inferred. Notably, at one well-studied site – the Soldier Mountain sand ramp – the new ages suggest a landform dating not to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 1 or 2, as previously suggested, but more likely to MIS 5. The Cady Mountain record indicates that the only period of the last glacial cycle lacking evidence for aeolian sedimentation is ~40–9 ka, broadly consistent with expectations of increased regional humidity. These results also suggest that site topographic context may influence the age structure of aeolian deposits. In this instance, sand ramps consistently represent the oldest type of deposit (range ~ 40–120 ka), while early-mid Holocene dune accumulation is associated with sandsheets and valley-fill sands. Retrospective dosimetry technique makes use of commonly available materials such as soil, brick, electronic components etc. for dose estimation. The measurement of internal component of annual dose is necessary for estimating the background dose received by the sample. This dose is then subtracted from the cumulative dose received by the sample in order to estimate the accident dose received by the sample retrospectively. In most of the cases it is sufficient to determine only the beta dose for the internal component of the annual dose. For the annual beta dose in soil/pottery thermoluminescence (TL) technique is widely used. However, in recent years Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dosimetry is gaining importance due to its various advantages over TL dosimetry. LiCaAlF 6 :Eu,Y (LCAF) is one of the promising OSL phosphor having remarkable dosimetric characteristics and sensitivity. By varying the stimulation parameters, the minimum detectable dose (MDD) of LCAF could be achieved in the range of 0.1–0.2 μGy. Leveraging this advancement, LCAF based dosimeters were successfully utilized for assessing the beta dose originating from various soil samples. Thermoluminescence (TL) and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) properties of quartz samples extracted from soil of Fisher Island (76° 13ʹ 23.9ʺ E, 69° 23ʹ 31.9ʺ S) in Antarctica were studied. The nature of signals indicated presence of a dominant slow component in the OSL signal. The widely utilized Single Aliquot Regenerative (SAR) protocol for dose recovery was found unsuitable for this particular sample due to the dominating slow component in the OSL signal. Efforts to minimize the effect of slow component in dose recovery by adopting procedures like, bleaching with blue light, and early background subtraction were carried out. Single-grain OSL dating of quartz is a popular approach to OSL dating, even when incomplete bleaching is not likely to be significant. However, little testing of the accuracy of single-grain dating has been published; particularly for samples older than 50 ka. In this study, we investigate the accuracy of single-grain quartz OSL dating, when a significant number of individual grains are no longer able to accurately measure the burial dose because of saturation effects. We compare standard multi-grain OSL results with those obtained from single-grain OSL measurements for five OIS substage 5e (Eemian) samples (∼128 ka). We show that for these samples, standard multi-grain quartz dose estimation results in dose estimates in good agreement with the predicted doses (four of the five samples recover age control), but that standard frequentist single-grain dating procedures significantly underestimate the age controls, i.e. the measured to predicted dose range between 0.42 ± 0.03 and 0.84 ± 0.06, where the underestimation increases with increasing relative number of grains in saturation. Attempting to remove the inevitable bias in the dose estimation resulting from a significant number of saturated grains (by using the D c criterion) reduced the underestimation, i.e. the measured to predicted dose ratio range between 0.63 ± 0.05 and 0.94 ± 0.08, but only the sample with the smallest absorbed dose is consistent with the age control. Using Bayesian analysis ("BayLum") the ratio of measured to predicted dose range between 0.75 ± 0.07 and 1.14 ± 0.08, but only two of the five samples agree with the independent age control. The upcoming edition of new stratigraphic scheme of Quaternary deposits of the Altai–Sayan mountain province is based on the concept of cataclysmic draining of the Pleistocene ice-dammed lakes that occurred prior to 90 ka (MIS-5 and earlier). Our geochronological (OSL, 14C) and paleontological data argue against excluding the Sartansky cryochron (MIS-2) from the epochs of the Altai glaciogenic fluvial catastrophes. The last cataclysmically drained ice-dammed lake in the Chuya Depression existed after 37 ka. The Kurai Depression during MIS-2 was filled with water already by 25 ka and was drained at ~19–16 ka. Draining of the last ice-dammed lake in the Kurai Basin correlates with the onset of the formation of the section of catafluvial-lacustrine cyclites in the Inya River valley (a right tributary of the Katun River) at 17–16 ka (MIS-2). Previously, this section was suggested as a parastratotype of the Saldzhar catafluvial deposits accumulated during MIS-5 in the new edition of the Altai–Sayan stratigraphic scheme. OSL dates (16–12 ka) were obtained for deposits at the margin of the 70-m "Saldzhar" terrace of the Katun River upstream of the mouth of the Chuya River. The paleontological findings of lacustrine fauna in situ allow us to reconsider the concept of the exclusively catafluvial genesis of the Saldzhar deposits of the 60-m terrace of the Katun River, near the mouth of its left tributary, the Sema River. The OSL date (32 ka) of deposits at the base of this terrace indicates the onset of its formation not earlier than the end of MIS-3. The section proposed as the stratotype of the post-Saldzhar Maly Yaloman alluvium with the age 90 ka does not meet the requirements of the Stratigraphic Code, because the contact with the Saldzhar deposits has not been revealed here and genesis of deposits is controversial. At present, 14С and OSL dates of the Saldzhar sequence and post-Saldzhar alluvium form two non-overlapping clusters, older than 90 and 35–12 ka, which can be connected both with methodological features of age dating and with insufficient geological knowledge. Only one of the eight IRSL and OSL dates obtained for Inya sequence deposits, which compose high (up to 300 m) bars in the Chuya and Katun river valleys, falls within the MIS-6 time, which is insufficient to establish its age as MIS-6 and older. To make correct stratigraphic reconstructions, it is necessary not only to expand a dataset obtained by different geochronological methods but also to study the dated deposits using a complex of geological methods. Brzezie in the Pleszew region was first mentioned in archaeological literature, as the location where a treasure of gold artifacts dating back to the 3rd period of the Bronze Age was discovered in 1876. Archaeological research has been conducted there almost continuously since 1985. The result of many years of fieldwork is the discovery of 363 late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age graves, as well as 50 burials of the Przeworsk culture from the era of Roman influence. In the last few years, further research has been conducted by archeologist Grzegorz Szczurek. After comprehensive geophysical prospecting, the extent of the necropolis was established, and more graves were excavated. For the first time, materials for radiocarbon and luminescence dating were also collected to determine the absolute chronology for this archaeological site. Four samples were dated in the Poznań radiocarbon laboratory, and five luminescence tests were conducted in the Gliwice luminescence laboratory. Due to the complete thermo-destruction of collagen in human bones, age determination was based on carbonate fractionation. In one case, a piece of charcoal was selected for dating purposes. Considering uncertainties and the fact that both methods date different events, the results reveal concurrence, giving a 1000–500 BC range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
