International trade in plants and climate change are two of the main factors causing damaging tree pests (i.e. fungi and insects) to spread into new areas. To mitigate these risks, a large-scale assessment of tree-associated fungi and insects is needed. We present records of endophytic fungi and insects in twigs of 17 angiosperm and gymnosperm genera, from 51 locations in 32 countries worldwide. Endophytic fungi were characterized by high-throughput sequencing of 352 samples from 145 tree species in 28 countries. Insects were reared from 227 samples of 109 tree species in 18 countries and sorted into taxonomic orders and feeding guilds. Herbivorous insects were grouped into morphospecies and were identified using molecular and morphological approaches. This dataset reveals the diversity of tree-associated taxa, as it contains 12,721 fungal Amplicon Sequence Variants and 208 herbivorous insect morphospecies, sampled across broad geographic and climatic gradients and for many tree species. This dataset will facilitate applied and fundamental studies on the distribution of fungal endophytes and insects in trees.

Brown-spot disease is a needle blight of conifers caused by the fungal pathogen Lecanosticta acicola (LA). Screening of available literature revealed numerous gaps in knowledge, which impede both curative and preventive strategies. Effects of climate change on disease occurrence, the possibility of emergence of more aggressive strains, its biology and dissemination (also including anthropogenic activities) are some of the main questions that need to be addressed. In order to collect data on outbreaks of LA, a global database was established containing information on 3012 observations (879 records of these are officially confirmed by the National Plant Protection Organizations) from 44 countries. This database provides useful information for the (ongoing) modelling of the spread of LA. A global population genetic study conducted within the project showed that the pathogen was likely imported from North America in two major ingressions. Nothing is known on the impact of eight species of Lecanosticta that are morphologically similar to LA, that were recently described from Central America but not yet recorded in Europe. LA European outbreaks indicate that climate change favours the spread and establishment of the fungus into new areas, in particular where temperatures and summer precipitation increased. On the contrary, dry and hot summers probably limit the spread of LA. As shown by a study conducted by project partners on pines in bogs, infection foci are predominantly located in vicinity of places of human activities indicating a spread caused by humans. Human activities in touristic hot-spots are observed also as a hot-spot for the brown-spot disease and its spread, as is reported by project partners. Hygienic measures combined with increasing efforts to track outbreaks in early stages and removal of infected trees are the options to protect European forests as well as for urban sites. Inspection of nursery stocks by trained personnel followed by laboratory analyses and the destruction of infested plants are of foremost importance. Preventing further unintended spread using a system implemented in Slovenia, where pines are preferably removed from sites that experience high touristic pressure is an option also for other countries. For infested bogs, preventing public access may limit the spread of the fungus by visitors and the need to close these sites is in discussion in Austria. Early warning against potentially harmful organisms of woody plant species is important for the prevention of pest introduction via the international trade in live plants. Recent studies of sentinel plants illustrate that this can be achieved by sampling woody plants in exporting countries. However, it is unclear where sentinel plants can best be located, and how many samples are required for the detection of pest risk or for an assessment of the diversity of organisms associated with the target plant species. It is also unclear when sampling should take place for the optimal detection of such organisms. The occurrence of organisms associated with a woody plant species is affected by global, regional and local factors, including climate or seasons, elevation, soil type, site management and plant genetic diversity. Therefore, such factors should be considered when deciding on the sampling design for early detection of harmful organisms. However, it is unknown which factors are most influential for the selection of locations and number of units for sampling for species diversity. We explored the importance of selected geographic and temporal factors, as well as costs for the design for sampling of organisms associated with any woody plant species using data from four case studies. Based on these case studies, we propose a generic scheme for the identification of optimal sampling locations and periods for potential harmful organisms. The scheme can be used irrespective of the targeted plant species or importing country.

Live plants are often traded in winter or early spring when the number of pests is potentially low, in part because deciduous trees lack foliage. However, the pests that may be associated with traded dormant plant material are likely to be largely unknown. Pest risk assessments can only be performed for known pest species and it is therefore important to identify potential pests before they are moved to a new area. In addition, it is difficult to predict whether introduced pests, even if already well known, may shift host after their arrival. Several studies attempted to estimate the likelihood of host shifts using literature about known pest-host associations, but the number of pests in these studies was often limited and the data were unlikely collected in the same place and at the same time. To overcome these problems, we performed a global study which aimed at detecting potential insect pests and fungal pathogens on congeneric native and exotic woody plant species that belong to six studied tree genera. Sampling was done simultaneously in 33 countries around the world following a common sampling protocol. At each location, twenty 50 cm long, dormant twigs were collected from each tree species and kept in containers with water at room temperature. Emerged insects were collected and identified based on morphology and DNA barcoding of the mDNA COI region. Fungal DNA was extracted from pooled buds, twig parts and needles for species identification using a metabarcoding approach based on the rDNA ITS region. Here, we present preliminary results of this study and discuss them in the context of pest risk assessment.

Pests are distributed unevenly across a location, therefore choosing where to sample, and the number and frequency of samples, is key to increasing the chances of detection. Sentinel plantings are a promising tool for detecting potential pests prior to their introduction into a country. Identification of the majority of species associated with the plant is important in order to identify potential pests before they enter and establish in a country. Detection of a wide range of species, including rare species, requires intensive sampling which increases the costs of sampling. It is thus important to balance sampling effort and costs. Given that the sentinel planting concept is relatively new, there is a lack of information and guidance on sampling for sentinel studies. Here we explore statistical sampling designs for the assessment of species diversity associated with woody plants. We outline factors that may affect diversity on different spatial and temporal scales and illustrate their influence on the fraction of the expected diversity that may be captured using several different case studies. (i) Differences in fungal diversity among and within seed lots of woody plants from three continents were assessed to illustrate local and regional diversity. (ii) We illustrate how variation in biodiversity within and among years can be captured by looking at long-term data from 18 year- long sampling of early oak defoliators. (iii) We examine between year variations in the fungal diversity of herbaceous plants and (iv) within year diversity of insect in nurseries. We discuss, with reference to previous sentinel studies, how the factors that cause the spatial and temporal differences in the diversity may be included in the sampling design and suggest an optimal sampling design for sentinel plantings. We also assess the effect of increasing costs in order to increase species detection.

Buçalışma, Çankırı ili Eldivan ilçesi Karaçam orman topraklarında saptanan bazımikrofungusların in vitro koşullardaantagonistik etkileşimlerinin belirlenmesi amacıyla 2006-2007 yılları arasındayürütülmüştür. Bu amaçla, araştırma alanı topraklarından izole edilenfungal izolatlar arasından seçilen 18 izolat kullanılarak, indikatör vepotansiyel antagonistlerin PDA besi ortamında eş zamanlı olarak kültürealınması ilkesine dayanan bir ikili kültür metodu olan fungal disk tekniği kullanırak fungal inhibisyon testlerigerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu testlerde; Trichoderma(6 izolat), Trichothecium (1izolat), Ulocladium (1 izolat) ve Penicillium (3 izolat) cinslerine bağlıtürlerden toplam 11 izolat antagonist; Fusarium(5 izolat), Thysanophora (1izolat)ve Aspergillus (1 izolat) cinsilerineait toplam 7 izolat ise indikatör olarak kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen bulgularagöre; test edilen indikatör izolatlara karşı en yüksekoranda antagonistik etkiye sahip izolatın ortalama % 73,86 engelleme oranı ile Tirichoderma harzianum’a ait T9 izolatı olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Ayrıca bu izolat, Fusarium sp.3’e ait F3 izolatına karşı gösterdiği %92 inhibisyondeğeri ile tüm antagonistler arasında en yüksek engelleme değerine sahip izolatolarak belirlenmiştir. Bununla birlikte, Penicillium chrysogenum, P. decumbens, P. glabrum, Trichotheciumroseum ve Ulocladium atrum izolatlarının fungal inhibisyon testlerinde sözü edilen indikatörfunguslara karşı Trichodermaizolatları kadar etkili olmadıkları belirlenmiştir. Sonuçolarak, Trichoderma cinsine bağlı 6izolatın (T2, T3, T9, T10, T13, T14) ortalama inhibisyon değerinin (%69,60),diğer antagonistlerden (% 40,89 – 51,00) daha yüksek düzeyde bulunduğuanlaşılmıştır. Trichoderma harzianum’aait T9 izolatının, özellikle, orman fidanlıklarında sorun olan toprak ve tohumkökenli patojen fungusların biyolojik mücadelesinde kullanılabilmepotansiyellerinin belirlenmesine yönelik çalışmalarda değerlendirilebileceğikanısına varılmıştır.

Yabancıistilacı türler, doğal yayılış alanlarının dışında bulunan ekosistemleri işgalederek biyolojik çeşitliliği tehdit eden türlerdir. Ekosistemlerinfonksiyonlarını ve doğal bileşenlerini değiştiren bu türlerden, özellikle tohumve bitki materyali ile taşınanlar oldukça dikkat çekmektedir. Tohum ile taşınanpatojenler, hastalıkların ülke bazında ve ülkeler arası yayılışında önemli birrole sahiptir. Bu tehlikeli patojenler arasında çok sayıda Fusarium türü bulunmaktadır.Fusarium circinatum fidanlıklarda çökertene, ormanlarda ise çam şıralıkanserine neden olan, çam türlerinin en tehlikeli patojenlerinden birisidir. Bufungus, çam tohumlarını enfekte ederek, tohum ticareti yoluyla kolaylıkla uzunmesafelere yayılış gösterebilmektedir. Doğal ve plantasyon çam ormanları içinönemli bir tehtid oluşturan bu türün, bugüne kadar 5 farklı kıtada yayılışgösterdiği bilinmektedir. Pseudotsugamenziesii ile birlikte en az 57 Pinus türünün çam şıralı kanserine karşıçeşitli derecelerde duyarlı olduğu bildirilmiştir. F. circinatum, dünya genelinde çok sayıda ülkede karantinaorganizması olarak listelenmiştir. Avrupa'da, karantina patojeni olarakdüzenlemeye yönelik önerilen zararlıların bulunduğu Avrupa ve Akdeniz BitkiSağlığını Koruma Örgütü (EPPO) A2 listesinde yer almaktadır. Bunun yanı sıraTürkiye Bitki Karantina Yönetmeliği Ek-2A’ya göre, ülkede mevcut olmadığı haldekarantina listesine tabi tutulan bir orman patojenidir.Dünyanınçeşitli bölgelerinde bulunan çam ormanlarında neden olduğu büyük ölçeklikayıplardan dolayı bu mikroorganizmanın önemi gün geçtikçe artmaktadır. Among these invasive alien species that change thefunctions and natural components of ecosystems, especially the ones that arecarried by seed and other plant material draw great attention. In pathogens,carried by seeds, have a crucial role in spreading the diseases bothdomestically and across country borders. Among the important pathogens carriedby seeds are a large number of Fusariumspecies.Fusarium circinatum is one of the most dangerouspathogen of Pinus species, causingdamping-off in nurseries and pitch canker in forests. This aggressive fungusmay infect pine seeds and, therefore, can easily be spread long distances bythe seed trade. It is a very significant threat to natural and planted pineforests, and to date it has invaded countries across five continents. At least57 species of Pinus along with Pseudotsuga menziesii are susceptible to pitch canker to varying degrees. F. circinatumhas recently been listed as a quarantine organism in numerous countriesthroughout the World. In Europe, it is currently included in the European andMediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) A2 list of pests recommendedfor regulation as quarantine pests. In addition, according to Regulation onPlant Quarantine Annex-2A, it is a forest pathogen subject to a quarantine listwhen it is not present in the country.The importance of thismicroorganism is increasing day by day due to the large-scale losses to pineforestry in various parts of the World. Once alien invasive pests enter thecountry, they may cause irreversible damage; hence, they set government backsignificant amount of money. For this reason, control measures against F. circinatum and all other invasivespecies should be taken and carried out without delay in the world. A thoroughunderstanding of the epidemiology and ecology of the causal agent is animportant prerequisite for managing this pathogen. In this study, an extensivesearch of literature dealing with F.circinatum was performed.

Buçalışma, karaçam orman topraklarının mikrofunguslarının belirlemesi amacıyla, ilk kez, Çankırı ili Eldivan ilçesi sınırlarıiçerisinde 2006-2007 yılları arasında yürütülmüştür. Toprağıseyreltme yöntemi ile gerçekleştirilen izolasyon çalışmaları sonucunda; karaçamorman topraklarında 62,986 (KOB/g) mikrofungus bulunduğu, bunların Askomycotave Zygomycota bölümlerine ait 28 cinse dahil 71 ayrı tür vevaryete, ayrıca teşhisi yapılamayan 9 adet farklı steril mikrofungi içerdiği belirlenmiştir. Çalışmadatespit edilen fungus cinsleri, harf sırasına göre; Absidia, Acremonium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Aureobasidium, Chrysosporium, Cladobotryum,Cladosporium, Clonostachys, Cunninghamella, Engyodontium,Eurotium, Fusarium, Gliomastix, Memnoniella, Mortierella,Mucor, Myrothecium, Paecilomyces, Penicillium, Rhizopus, Sepedonium, Sporothrix, Stachybotrys,Thysanophora, Trichoderma,Trichotheciumve Ulocladium olduğuanlaşılmıştır. Tür zenginliği bakımından ele alındığında; sözü edilenfunguslardan, Penicillium, Fusarium, Aspergillus, Mucor, Trichoderma, Cladosporium ve Paecilomyces cinslerininöne çıktıkları belirlenmiştir. Araştırma,koloni sayıları bakımından değerlendirildiğinde ise Penicillium cinsinin ilk sırayı aldığı, bunu Aspergillus, Trichoderma,Mucor, Absidia, Fusarium, Clonostachys,Engyodontium, Thysanophora, Gliomastix,Mortierella, Rhizopus, Cladosporium, Cunninghamella, Stachybotrys ve Paecilomycescinslerinin izlediği anlaşılmıştır. Buna göre, gerek tür zenginliği ve gereksekoloni sayısı bakımından, Penicilliumcinsinin ilk sırayı aldığı kanısına varılmıştır. Çalışmada, en yaygın tür ve varyetelerin isesırasıyla, Penicillium glabrum (%4,11), P. decumbens (%3,06), Clonostachys rosea (Syn: Gliocladium roseum) (%2,95), Penicilliumsp.2 (%2,95), Trichoderma harzianum (%2,95), Parengyodontium album (syn: Engyodontiumalbum) (%2,85), Thysanophorapenicillioides (%2,75), P. chrysogenum var. chrysogenum (%2,63) olduğu buçalışma ile ortaya konulmuştur. Çalışmasonucunda elde edilen bulguların, Ülkemiz orman topraklarının mikrofungal türzenginliği ve çeşitliliğinin belirlenmesine yönelik çalışmalara katkısağlarken, toprak funguslarının çeşitliliği ve zenginliği üzerinde etkilibiyotik ya da abiyotik faktörlerin değerlendirilmesine yönelik olarak bundasonra yapılacak olan çalışmalar için de bir altlık oluşturacağı kanısındayız.

Bu çalışmada, %30’luk üre solüsyonu, boraks tozu ve bir Trichoderma harzianum izolatı, Abies nordmanniana ssp. bornmülleriana dip kütükleri üzerine uygulanarak, Heterobasidion annosum s.l enfeksiyonunu engelleme yetenekleri açısından arazi koşullarında test edilmiştir. Her bir uygulama 20 tekerrürle temsil edilmiş olup, kontrol de dahil toplam 80 ağaç üzerinde çalışılmıştır. Kontrol olarak ayrılan dip kütüklerine herhangi bir işlem yapılmamıştır. Arazi denemesi Ekim 2008’de kurulmuş ve uygulamaların etkililiği, denemenin kurulduğu tarihten 6 ay sonra, uygulamaların gerçekleştirildiği dip kütüklerinden kesilen diskler üzerinde H. annosum s.l’ nun varlığına bakılarak belirlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak, üre, boraks ve T.harzianum uygulamalarının sırasıyla % 96.30, 75.75 ve 44.90 oranlarında koruyuculuk sağladığı görülmüştür. Bu çalışmada biyolojik mücadelede kullanılan antagonist, H. annosum s.l’dan kaynaklanan enfeksiyonu engellemede test edilen kimyasallar kadar etkili bulunmamıştır

This study was conducted in Abies cilicica stands in Seydişehir Forestry Enterprise of Konya Regional Directorate of Forestry. The aim of the study was to determine the efficacy of selected biological and chemical control agents against establishment of the root and butt rot pathogen Heterobasidion abietinum. In field trials, spore solutions of Trichoderma harzianum and Phlebiopsis gigantea isolates, 30% aqueous urea solution and borax powder were applied onto the freshly cut A. cilicica stumps. Within one hour after the treatments the stumps were inoculated with the pathogen. In order to evaluate the growth of the fungus inside the trunk, living trees were cut into six 1-m-long sections starting from 0.5 m height. Approximately 2-cm-thick discs were then taken from the bottom of each section. A total of 120 disks, collected from the study areas, were investigated for the presence of the conidiophores of H. abietinum in the laboratory. The mean efficacies of urea, T. harzianum, borax and P. gigantea were 98.8, 96.4, 96.3, and 72.3%, respectively. The decay inside the trunk caused by the pathogen reached up to 5.5 meters. Çürüklüğün ağaç içindeki gelişiminin tespitine yönelik gerçekleştirilen çalışmada, biyolojik ve kimyasal muamelelerin yapıldığı alanlardan seçilen ağaçlardan, 1'er m aralıklarla diskler kestirilmiştir. Dip kütüğü seviyesinden başlayarak, her bir ağaçtan altı adet, toplamda 120 adet disk, laboratuvar koşullarında H. annosum s.l'a ait konidioforların varlığı açısından incelenmiştir. Toros göknarı meşcerelerinde H. abietinum'a karşı kimyasal ve biyolojik mücadele yöntemlerinin araştırıldığı bu denemelerde sırasıyla, üre, T. harzianum, boraks ve P. gigantea ile %98,90- 96,37- 96,25 ve 72,32 ortalama değerleri ile kontrole göre koruyuculuk sağlanmıştır. Bu çalışma, Dedegöl Dağı ve çevresindeki yüksek dağ ormanı basamağında yer alan doğal karaçam (Pinus nigra subsp. nigra var. caramanica) gençliklerinde zarara neden olan kar ile ilişkili fungal hastalık etmenlerini, bunların yaygınlıkları ve zarar şiddetlerini belirlenmek amacı ile yürütülmüştür. Araştırma alanında karaçam gençliklerinde zarara sebep olan fungal hastalık etmenleri, Herpotrichia juniperi, Phacidium infestans ve Gremmeniella abietina (B. pinea var. cembrae)?dır. Örnek alanlarda incelenen karaçamlarda kar funguslarının yaygınlığı ortalama %48,7 olup, en yaygın ve en fazla zarara sebep olan hastalık etmeni P. infestans?dır. Bunu, G. abietina ve H. juniperi izlemiştir. Araştırma alanında bu fungusların yaygınlıkları sırası ile %31,9, %26,6 ve %9,2, zarar şiddetleri %17,1, %12,4 ve %3,3?dür. Bu bulgular göz önünde bulundurulduğunda, kar funguslarının Dedegöl Dağı ve çevresinde doğal karaçam gençliklerinde yaygın, ancak önemli zararlara sebep olmadıkları kanısına varılmıştır. Kar funguslarının varlığı, yaygınlık ve zarar şiddeti, yetişme ortamı ve konukçu özelliklerinin etkisi altındadır. Konukçu sıklığı, H. juniperi ve özellikle P. infestans için ayırt edici bir faktördür. Diğer taraftan, her bir fungus türü üzerinde farklı yetişme ortamı özelliği ya da özelliklerinin etkisi söz konusudur. H. juniperi üzerinde etkili yetişme ortamı özelliği bakı iken, P. infestans için yükselti ve bakı ile ağaçların siper etkisi, konukçuların mekânsal dağılım deseni ve bakının kombine etkileri önemli bulunmuştur. G. abietina?nın kış mevsiminde karlı gün sayısı fazla olan örnek alanlarda bulunma riski ve zarar şiddeti daha yüksektir. Alt örnek alanlarda H. juniperi ve P. infestans ile P. infestans ve G. abietina?nın birbirlerine bağımlı olarak yayıldıkları belirlenmiş ve bu birliktelikler üzerinde sırasıyla bakı ve yamaç konumunun etkili olduğu anlaşılmıştır. H. juniperi?nin, P. infestans ve G. abietina?ya göre daha kısa boylu bireylerde görülme ve bunlarda daha şiddetli zarara sebep olma ihtimali yüksektir. G. abietina?nın düşük vitaliteye sahip bireylerde daha fazla görüldüğü ve bunlarda daha fazla zarara yol açtığı ya da zayıf bitkilerin G. abietina?dan daha şiddetli etkilendiği iddia edilebilir. The study was conducted in order to investigate the incidence of and the severity of diseases caused by the snow fungi; Herpotrichia juniperi, Phacidium infestans and Gremmeniella abietina in natural regenerations of Pinus nigra subsp. nigra var. caramanica in the high mountain forests of the Dedegöl Mountain (Isparta). It was hypothesized that the snow related fungi co-occur and the occurrence, incidence and severity of disease caused by each fungus are correlated with the site and host characteristics. Field measurements were carried out on 100-m-long and 4-m-wide transects orientated more or less parallel to the contour lines. Seedlings and saplings within these plots were investigated for symptoms and signs of the snow fungi. The duration of snow cover on sample plots was evaluated through satellite-derived snow cover maps of NASA?s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) analysed in GIS data. The mean incidence of snow related fungi in the sample plots was 48,7%, ranging between 24- 69,4 % within the sample plots. Disease incidence and severity varied considerably between the investigated P. nigra regeneration plots. Disease incidence of H. juniperi ranged from 0 to 23,3% (overall mean: 9,2%) while disease severity ranged from 0 to 9,8 % (overall mean: 3,3 %). G. abietina was found in all P. nigra regeneration plots. Its overall mean incidence (26.6%) was slightly lower on P. nigra than that of P. infestans which was observed on 251 pines (31.9%). Similar results were obtained for the disease severity which was 12.4% for G. abietina and 17.1% for P. infestans. The impacts of some site conditions on the occurrence of the disease agents were significant. Host density and aspect fitness index were important factor for both H. juniperi and P. infestans. The average number of colony forming units equivalent to one gram of oven-dried soil of the study area soils were 62,986 CFU/g.With respect to the investigations based upon the fungal inhibition tests, in which the in vitroantagonistic activity of 11 antagonistic fungal isolates against 7 indicator fungal isolates chosenamong the fungi isolated from Crimean pine forest soils were assayed on PDA medium viadual cultures, it was found that all isolates of Trichoderma were relatively effective againstindicator fungal isolates, with the inhibition percents above 69%. On the other hand, Penicillium(Pc, Pd, Pf), Trichothecium roseum Link and Ulocladium atrum Preuss isolates used asantagonistic organism against the same indicators were not as efficient as Trichoderma isolates.Among the Trichoderma isolates, T3 found to be the most successful antagonist against allindicators tested. Dothistroma septosporum, the primary causal agent of Dothistroma needle blight, is one of the most significant foliar pathogens of pine worldwide. Its wide host and environmental ranges have led to its global success as a pathogen and severe economic damage to pine forests in many regions. This comprehensive global population study elucidated the historical migration pathways of the pathogen to reveal the Eurasian origin of the fungus. When over 3800 isolates were examined, three major population clusters were revealed: North America, Western Europe, and Eastern Europe, with distinct subclusters in the highly diverse Eastern European cluster. Modeling of historical scenarios using approximate Bayesian computation revealed the North American cluster was derived from an ancestral population in Eurasia. The Northeastern European subcluster was shown to be ancestral to all other European clusters and subclusters. The Turkish subcluster diverged first, followed by the Central European subcluster, then the Western European cluster, which has subsequently spread to much of the Southern Hemisphere. All clusters and subclusters contained both mating-types of the fungus, indicating the potential for sexual reproduction, although asexual reproduction remained the primary mode of reproduction. The study strongly suggests the native range of D. septosporum to be in Eastern Europe (i.e., the Baltic and Western Russia) and Western Asia.

Bu çalışma, Dedegöl Dağı ve çevresinde (Isparta) doğal karaçam (Pinus nigra subsp. nigra var. caramanica) gençliklerinde zarara neden olan kar fungusları, Herpotrichia juniperi, Phacidium infestans ve Gremmeniella abietina'nın yaygınlık ve zarar şiddetlerinin belirlenmesi amacı ile yürütülmüştür. Kar funguslarının birbirlerine bağımlı olarak yayıldıkları ve bu fungusların görülme yaygınlık ve zarar şiddetleri üzerinde yetişme ortamı ve konukçu özelliklerinin etkili olduğu hipotezleri test edilmiştir.Örnek alan ölçümleri 100 m uzunluğunda 4 m genişliğindeki transekt üzerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Örnek alan içerisine giren karaçam fidan ve genç ağaçları hastalık etmenlerininin simptomları ve işaretlerinin varlığı açısından incelenmiştir. Kar örtüsünün yerde kalma süresi, NASA’nın Terra uydularında bulunan MODIS algılayıcısından elde edilen görüntülerin CBS ortamında analizi sonucu belirlenmiştir.Örnek alanlarda incelenen karaçamlarda kar funguslarının yaygınlığı ortalama %48,7 olup, en yaygın ve en fazla zarara sebep olan hastalık etmeni P. infestans’dır. Bunu, G. abietina ve H. juniperi izlemiştir. It was hypothesized that the snow related fungi co‐occur and the occurrence, incidence and severity of disease caused by each fungus are correlated with the site and host characteristics.Field measurements were carried out on 100‐m‐long and 4‐m‐wide transects orientated more or less parallel to the contour lines. Seedlings and saplings within these plots were investigated for symptoms and signs of the snow fungi.The duration of snow cover on sample plots was evaluated through satellitederived snow cover maps of NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) analysed in GIS data.The mean incidence of snow related fungi in the sample plots was 48,7%, ranging between 24‐ 69,4 % within the sample plots. Disease incidence and severity varied considerably between the investigated P. nigra regeneration plots. Disease incidence of H. juniperi ranged from 0 to 23,3% (overall mean: 9,2%) while disease severity ranged from 0 to 9,8 % (overall mean: 3,3 %). G. Abietina was found in all P. nigra regeneration plots. Its overall mean incidence (26.6%) was slightly lower on P. nigra than that of P. infestans which was observed on 251 pines (31.9%). Similar results were obtained for the disease severity which was 12.4% for G. abietina and 17.1% for P. infestans.The impacts of some site conditions on the occurrence of the disease agents were significant. Host density and aspect fitness index were important factor for both H. juniperi and P. infestans. Aim Early warning against potentially harmful organisms of woody plant species can be achieved by sampling sentinel plants in exporting countries. However, it is unclear where sentinel plants can best be located, and how many samples are required and when and how often sampling optimally should take place for the adequate assessment of the biodiversity associated with the target plant species. We aimed to review spatial and temporal factors affecting associate biodiversity of single woody plant species and to develop guidance for the design of global biodiversity sampling studies. Methods Literature about factors affecting the diversity of insects and fungi in association with single plant species on global, regional, local and different temporal scales was reviewed. Case studies of insect and fungal diversity, primarily collected on single plant species, and the cost of collecting and analysing samples from locations around the world were analysed. Results The review of the literature illustrated various factors affecting diversity, and the case studies allowed quantification of the relative impact of some spatial, temporal and financial aspects on captured biodiversity and, thus, illustrate the need to consider all possible factors that may affect the result of the sampling when deciding on a sampling design. Main conclusions Our study illustrates the factors that should be considered when deciding on the location and timing of sampling for sentinel plants, which is important because of the trade‐off between the number of samples and sampling locations needed to detect many of the species which may be potential pests, and the cost of (repeated) sampling in many locations. Decisions about the sampling design must be based on the objective of the sampling, but our recommendations apply irrespective of the targeted plant species or country.
