2. CLASSLA-Express: a Train of CLARIN.SI Workshops on Language Resources and Tools with Easily Expanding Route

Abstract

This paper introduces the CLASSLA-Express workshop series as an innovative approach to disseminating linguistic resources and infrastructure provided by the CLASSLA Knowledge Centre for South Slavic languages and the Slovenian CLARIN.SI infrastructure. The workshop series employs two key strategies: (1) conducting workshops directly in countries with interested audiences, and (2) designing the series for easy expansion to new venues. The first iteration of the CLASSLA-Express workshop series encompasses 6 workshops in 5 countries. Its goal is to share knowledge on the use of corpus querying tools, as well as the recently-released CLASSLA-web corpora - the largest general corpora for South Slavic languages. Abstract

We present bgGLUE(Bulgarian General Language Understanding Evaluation), a benchmark for evaluating language models on Natural Language Understanding (NLU) tasks in Bulgarian. Our benchmark includes NLU tasks targeting a variety of NLP problems (e.g., natural language inference, fact-checking, named entity recognition, sentiment analysis, question answering, etc.) and machine learning tasks (sequence labeling, document-level classification, and regression). We run the first systematic evaluation of pre-trained language models for Bulgarian, comparing and contrasting results across the nine tasks in the benchmark. The evaluation results show strong performance on sequence labeling tasks, but there is a lot of room for improvement for tasks that require more complex reasoning. We make bgGLUE publicly available together with the fine-tuning and the evaluation code, as well as a public leaderboard at https://bgglue.github.io/, and we hope that it will enable further advancements in developing NLU models for Bulgarian., Comment: Accepted to ACL 2023 (Main Conference)

Abstract

Parliamentary and legislative debate transcripts provide informative insight into elected politicians' opinions, positions, and policy preferences. They are interesting for political and social sciences as well as linguistics and natural language processing (NLP) research. While existing research studied individual parliaments, we apply advanced NLP methods to a joint and comparative analysis of six national parliaments (Bulgarian, Czech, French, Slovene, Spanish, and United Kingdom) between 2017 and 2020. We analyze emotions and sentiment in the transcripts from the ParlaMint dataset collection and assess if the age, gender, and political orientation of speakers can be detected from their speeches. The results show some commonalities and many surprising differences among the analyzed countries.

Abstract

The paper presents a feature-rich approach to the automatic recognition and categorization of named entities (persons, organizations, locations, and miscellaneous) in news text for Bulgarian. We combine well-established features used for other languages with language-specific lexical, syntactic and morphological information. In particular, we make use of the rich tagset annotation of the BulTreeBank (680 morpho-syntactic tags), from which we derive suitable task-specific tagsets (local and nonlocal). Abstract

We present experiments with part-of-speech tagging for Bulgarian, a Slavic language with rich inflectional and derivational morphology. Unlike most previous work, which has used a small number of grammatical categories, we work with 680 morpho-syntactic tags. Abstract

We propose a morphologically informed model for named entity recognition, which is based on LSTM-CRF architecture and combines word embeddings, Bi-LSTM character embeddings, part-of-speech (POS) tags, and morphological information. While previous work has focused on learning from raw word input, using word and character embeddings only, we show that for morphologically rich languages, such as Bulgarian, access to POS information contributes more to the performance gains than the detailed morphological information. Thus, we show that named entity recognition needs only coarse-grained POS tags, but at the same time it can benefit from simultaneously using some POS information of different granularity. Abstract

This paper outlines the ParlaMint project from the perspective of its goals, tasks, participants, results and applications potential. The project produced language corpora from the sessions of the national parliaments of 17 countries, almost half a billion words in total. The corpora are split into COVID-related subcorpora (from November 2019) and reference corpora (to October 2019). The corpora are uniformly encoded according to the ParlaMint schema with the same Universal Dependencies linguistic annotations. Samples of the corpora and conversion scripts are available from the project’s GitHub repository. The complete corpora are openly available via the CLARIN.SI repository for download, and through the NoSketch Engine and KonText concordancers as well as through the Parlameter4 interface for exploration and analysis.

Abstract

This paper presents the ParlaMint corpora containing transcriptions of the sessions of the 17 European national parliaments with half a billion words. The corpora are uniformly encoded, contain rich meta-data about 11 thousand speakers, and are linguistically annotated following the Universal Dependencies formalism and with named entities. Samples of the corpora and conversion scripts are available from the project’s GitHub repository, and the complete corpora are openly available via the CLARIN.SI repository for download, as well as through the NoSketch Engine and KonText concordancers and the Parlameter interface for on-line exploration and analysis.

Abstract

Since 2016, the Tour de CLARIN initiative has been periodically highlighting prominent user involvement activities in the CLARIN network in order to increase the visibility of its members, reveal the richness of the CLARIN landscape, and display the full range of activities that show what CLARIN has to offer to researchers, teachers, students, professionals, and the general public interested in using and processing language data in various forms. Originally only focussing on CLARIN consortia, this initiative was expanded twice, first in 2019 to also feature the work of CLARIN Knowledge Centres (or K-centres), which offer knowledge and expertise in specific areas to researchers, educators, and developers alike, and second in 2021 to feature Service Providing Centres (or B-centres), which serve as the technical backbone of the CLARIN infrastructure. For almost five years, Tour de CLARIN has been one of the flagship outreach initiatives, thus far released in the form of three printed volumes. The fourth volume is organized in two parts. In Part 1, we present CLARIN Portugal in five chapters: an introduction to the consortium, its members, and their work; a description of one of their key resources; the presentation of an outstanding tool; an account of a successful event for the researchers and students in their network; and an interview with a renowned researcher from the Digital Humanities or Social Sciences who has successfully used the consortium’s infrastructure in their work. In Part 2, we present the work of six K-centres and two B-centres that have been visited since the publication of the second volume in November 2020: the K-centre for morphologically rich languages SAFMORIL, the French CORLI K-centre, the K-centre for South Slavic languages CLASSLA, the NLP:EL K-centre for Greek, the Austrian B-centre ARCHE, and the CLARIN-PL B-centre. Each centre is presented in two chapters: a presentation of what the centre offers to researchers and an interview with a renowned researcher who has benefited from the collaboration with the centre. The volume would not have been possible without the contributions and dedication of the CLARIN national coordinators and user involvement coordinators, and centre representatives: Antonio Branco, João Silva, Erik Axelson, Eva Soroli, Nikola Ljubešić, Maria Gavriilidou, Martina Trognitz, and Jan Wieczorek. Abstract

This article examines the debate surrounding the universality of a Determiner Phrase (DP) in the nominal domain, specifically focusing on South Slavic languages. The study conducted experimental research on binding interpretations in Bulgarian, Macedonian, and Serbian to test the claims made in previous research. The results indicate that the presence or absence of DP does not solely determine binding potentials in these languages. The study also addresses other related issues, such as the acceptability of different types of pronouns and pronominal possessive adjectives, and the variation in binding interpretations among speakers. Overall, the findings suggest that the differences in binding potentials cannot be solely attributed to the presence or absence of DP structure. [Extracted from the article]
