3. Speech Communication Education and the American Indian: Challenges and Contrasts.

The author examines the peculiarly crucial role played by spoken communication in the development and advancement of Indian cultures, with special attention to the challenges and contrasts the American Indian student presents for the speech communication educator. Three specific aspects of traditional speech communication behavior, unique to the American Indian, are discussed. These three--the tradition of Indian eloquence, comparatively superior listening and memory capacities, and silence as an integral part of communication--are suggested for consideration by the speech communication teacher whose classroom includes American Indian students. 4. The Indian Pupil in the High School Speech Class.

Abstract

By evaluating the 112 responses to a questionnaire sent to 241 speech teachers in 17 states, an attempt was made to identify the peculiar instructional problems confronting the high school speech teacher in classes composed of both Indian and non-Indian pupils. Teachers cited eight distinct student problem areas, including feelings of social inadequacy, natural shyness and reluctance to speak, poor vocabularies, and monotonal and mumbled delivery, all of which were aggravated by irregular attendance patterns. Seven major approaches were mentioned by teachers as effective solutions, such as encouraging Indian students to "warm up" with group speech activities before individual presentations and developing in students a greater knowledge and self-respect for Indian heritage. Concerning their own classroom effectiveness, teachers pointed to the need for special training in various areas of speech instruction and recommended that a clearinghouse be set up as a source of information exchange. Abstract

The "War on Poverty" has focused on the economic, educational, and social disadvantage of great segments of our population. Prominent among the disadvantaged is the North American Indian, living in the mainstream of the dominant culture and in the more isolated setting of the government reservation. One of the basic difficulties faced in efforts to improve the lot of the Indian in today's society is that of communication between the Indian and the non-Indian. Government and private agencies concerned with such matters are turning to the academic community in terms of funded research, curriculum development, and teacher development. To respond more meaningfully to these requests, the scholar must be aware of the investigations of his colleagues, past and present. This bibliography, containing approximately 600 items published between 1810 and 1967, is an attempt to provide a comprehensive listing of resource materials for the people studying the speech and spoken language of the North American Indian. 8. Quanah Parker: A Great Indian Spokesman

Abstract

Although some uncertainty exists regarding the exact date, it is generally believed that Quanah Parker was born in 1845 near Cedar Lake on the southwest edge of the Staked Plains of Texas. Quanah's father was Peta Nocona, a chief of the Nocone band of Comanche warriors. His mother was Cynthia Ann Parker, a white woman taken captive by Comanche raiders in 1836 at the age of nine. During his younger years, Quanah attained prominence as a cunning and resourceful war chief. It was during the period 1875-1911, however, that his reputation as a speaker of great influence and considerable eloquence was established.

Abstract

The article discusses the results of a study that evaluates the procedures in the speech fundamental courses in U.S. colleges and universities. The study shows speech fundamental programs are offered in 117 schools while 15 schools did not offer the course. The speeches most frequently given more than once were the speech to inform, persuade, stimulate and impromptu. The speaking experiences given the most and least weight in determining the speaking portion of the final grade are discussed.

Kenneth Hance from Michage State University served as a judge during the finals of the Kentucky State Oratorial Contest in February 1965.

Abstract

Innovation in patient care requires both clinical and technical skills, and this paper presents the methods and outcomes of a nine-year, clinical-academic collaboration to develop and evaluate new medical device technologies, while teaching mechanical engineering. Together, over the course of a single semester, seniors, graduate students, and clinicians conceive, design, build, and test proof-of-concept prototypes. Projects initiated in the course have generated intellectual property and peer-reviewed publications, stimulated further research, furthered student and clinician careers, and resulted in technology licenses and start-up ventures.

36. THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN: AN EXAMINATION OF THE COMMUNICATION OF CULTURAL IDENTITY.

Abstract

The article examines and facilitates some understandings of the past and present efforts to identify and communicate the first cultures of the U.S. and Canada to their more recent occupants and the manner in which these efforts have related to the integrative/assimilative process. As early as 1831, shortly after passage of the Indian Removal Act, Alexis de Tocqueville commented on the issue. The isolation spoken of by de Tocqueville was yet to become even more pronounced as tribes and bands, uprooted from their traditional homes of centuries, were indiscriminately dispersed to the most remote corners of the land. D'Arcy McNickle, the Native American anthropologist and member of the Flathead Tribe, has cited one particular incident of the kinds of behavior which led to the well-known Indian accusation that the white man "spoke with forked tongue" and which further impeded exchange between the races, particularly the accurate and truthful communication of the Native American identity. Thus, the die was cast for a system of life intended to break the Indian's will and destroy his native culture by the process of integration and assimilation through isolation.
