3. A Micro-Credentialing Methodology for Improved Recognition of HE Employability Skills

Abstract

Increasingly, among international organizations concerned with unemployment rates and industry demands, there is an emphasis on the need to improve graduates' employability skills and the transparency of mechanisms for their recognition. This research presents the Employability Skills Micro-credentialing (ESMC) methodology, designed under the EPICA Horizon 2020 (H2020) project and tested at three East African universities, and shows how it fosters pedagogical innovation and promotes employability skills integration and visibility. The methodology, supported by a competency-based ePortfolio and a digital micro-credentialing system, was evaluated using a mixed-method design, combining descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis to capture complementary stakeholder perspectives. The study involved the participation of 13 lecturers, 169 students, and 24 employers. The results indicate that the ESMC methodology is a promising approach for supporting students in their transition from academia to the workplace. The implementation of the methodology and the involvement of employers entails rethinking educational practices and academic curricula to embed employability skills. It enables all actors to broaden their understanding of the relationship between higher education and the business sector and to sustain visibility, transparency, and reliability of the recognition process. These findings indicate that there are favourable conditions in the region for the adoption of the approach, which is a meaningful solution for the stakeholder community to address the skills gap.

6. Open Educational Practices (OEP) in the Design of Digital Competence Assessment

Abstract

This article presents the implementation of an assessment model for generic competences in K-12 enabled by open educational practices. It showcases a digital competence assessment model that outlines the design of competence assessment scenarios constructed by means of a collaborative process involving teachers from six European countries, learning designers, and researchers. Our study draws attention to the concept of open educational practices as a broad descriptor of four areas of teacher practice regarding design, content, teaching, and assessment. The process unfolds through three phases, where teachers' engagement with collaborative processes and network-based tools facilitate the construction of active shared learning. It analyzes the joint creation of open practices, and the production of open educational resources. The scalability, flexibility, and adaptability of competence assessment scenarios underline their transferability to similar contexts. The experience may benefit educational institutions and communities of teachers interested in innovating and opening up education.

Abstract

Background Most people with chronic Chagas disease do not receive specific care and therefore are undiagnosed and do not receive accurate treatment. This manuscript discusses and evaluates a collaborative strategy to improve access to healthcare for patients with Chagas in Bolivia, a country with the highest prevalence of Chagas in the world. Methods With the aim of reinforcing the Chagas National Programme, the Bolivian Chagas Platform was born in 2009. The first stage of the project was to implement a vertical pilot program in order to introduce and consolidate a consensual protocol-based healthcare, working in seven centers (Chagas Platform Centers). From 2015 on the model was extended to 52 primary healthcare centers, through decentralized, horizontal scaling-up. To evaluate the strategy, we have used the WHO ExpandNet program. Results The strategy has significantly increased the number of patients cared for, with 181,397 people at risk of having T. cruzi infection tested and 57,871 (31·9%) new diagnostics performed. In those with treatment criteria, 79·2% completed the treatment. The program has also trained a significant number of health personnel through the specific Chagas guidelines (67% of healthcare workers in the intervention area). Conclusions After being recognized by the Chagas National Programme as a healthcare model aligned with national laws and priorities, the Bolivian platform of Chagas as an innovation, includes attributes that they have made it possible to expand the strategy at the national level and could also be adapted in other countries.

Abstract

Background Chagas disease (CD) has significant global health impact, but safe, effective treatments remain elusive. The nitroimidazole fexinidazole is a potential treatment. Methods This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, dose-finding, proof-of-concept study was conducted in Bolivia. Adults with serologically confirmed chronic indeterminate CD and positive PCR were randomly assigned to 1 of 6 fexinidazole regimens (1200 or 1800 mg/day for 2, 4, or 8 weeks) or placebo. Target recruitment was 20 patients/arm. The primary endpoint was sustained parasitological clearance by serial negative qPCR from end of treatment (EOT) until 6 months follow-up in the intention-to-treat (ITT) population. Follow-up was extended to 12 months. Results Enrollment was interrupted after 4/47 patients presented with transient asymptomatic grade 3 and 4 neutropenia. Treatment of ongoing patients was stopped in all patients administered >2 weeks. A total of 40 patients received treatment with fexinidazole from 3 days to 8 weeks. Delayed-onset neutropenia (n = 8) and increased liver enzymes (n = 8) were found in fexinidazole patients vs none in the placebo arm. In the ITT analysis, sustained parasitological clearance from EOT to 12 months follow-up varied between 66.7% (1200 mg–2 week) and 100.0% (1800 mg–2 week). Rapid, sustained clearance of parasitemia was observed in all treated patients with available data, but not in any patients in the placebo group, at 12 months (P =.0056). Further exploratory exposure-response analysis suggested low dosages of fexinidazole may be safe and effective. Conclusions Further evaluation is needed to establish fexinidazole's minimum effective dosage and risk–benefit relationship. Results suggest potential for effective treatment regimens <10 days. Abstract

Background Monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) plays a direct role in the infiltration of macrophages and monocytes during the early stages of Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) nephritis. The aim of this study was to compare the urinary MCP-1/creatinine levels in children with and without HSP nephritis and determine if they are associated with the severity of renal lesions. Methods We included 77 patients with HSP and 25 healthy control children. Levels of serum creatinine, urinalysis, and 12-h proteinuria assessments were performed. Urinary MCP-1 levels were determined by ELISA. Results Fifty-seven patients had nephritis (74%). Urinary MCP-1/creatinine levels were significantly higher in patients with HSP nephritis (median, 653 pg/mg) compared to those with HSP without nephritis (median, 269 pg/mg) or healthy children (191 pg/mg). In addition, higher MCP-1/creatinine levels were observed in HSP patients who had renal biopsy (median, 1,412 pg/mg) in comparison to HSP patients without renal biopsy (median, 302 pg/mg). The urinary MCP-1 cut-off value of 530 pg/mg could be used to distinguish patients who undergo renal biopsy with a sensitivity of 81% and specificity of 77%. Conclusions Urinary MCP-1/creatinine levels are elevated in the early stages of severe HSP nephritis and can be used as a biomarker for HSP nephritis. En donde se exponen temas de física a través de diferentes recursos dinámicos, como un experimento que será la base principal de la página, ya que las experimentaciones a más de proporcionarnos un concepto más claro sobre el tema que se quiere explicar, ayudan a entender de forma gráfica cómo se presentan los fenómenos en la vida real. Es por eso por lo que en la página web se ha detallado todo lo que se necesita para realizar el experimento y también se explica, paso a paso, cómo realizarlo, para que las personas interesadas en aprender puedan llevarlo a cabo en sus casas sin inconvenientes. Así es como con la página web se busca crear un respaldo, que ayude tanto a los profesores a explicar mejor a sus estudiantes como a los estudiantes a reforzar sus conocimientos; especialmente en este tiempo de pandemia que cambió la forma de educación a virtual, la cual ha dificultado el aprendizaje de muchos alumnos. Pensando en esta situación, se realizó un experimento fácil, además con materiales caseros. Con respecto a la creación de la página web, se utilizó WIX debido a las varias funciones de personalización que ofrece, y de este modo, obtener una página que sea más llamativa para los usuarios que ingresen a la página, en busca de reforzar sus conocimientos.

Abstract

This work outlines the conceptual development of the CRISS digital competence operational concept and the assessment model leading ultimately to its certification. These developments were led by a team from Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in strong collaboration with the project partners. The booklet also presents eleven "competence assessment scenarios" supporting digital competence development. They were created by the project partners together with enthusiastic teachers among seven European countries and the support of educational technology experts and learning designers.

Abstract

La pandemia por COVID-19 ha sacudido los cimientos de nuestra educación. Nos hemos encontrado ante la imposibilidad de que nuestro alumnado pueda desplazarse a los centros educativos, que han sido cerrados a causa del confinamiento decretado en la mayoría de países. De forma imprevista, las instituciones educativas se han visto obligadas a adoptar soluciones de emergencia, migrando hacia modelos de docencia no presencial remota, que han permitido parar el golpe. A partir de esta experiencia, se empieza a valorar si la educación online puede ser una aliada válida que permita el desarrollo de soluciones híbridas en nuestros sistemas educativos. La respuesta es que sí, aunque lo que se ha hecho hasta ahora no es, propiamente, educación online. Este libro presenta una serie de propuestas para mejorar la educación online y para hacer frente a futuras situaciones de presencialidad discontinua que puedan darse debidas a posibles nuevos confinamientos, totales o parciales. Quiere ser un instrumento de apoyo para todos los profesionales de la educación que necesitan o quieren aprovechar al máximo el potencial transformador que ofrece la educación online. Ens hem trobat davant la impossibilitat que el nostre alumnat pugui desplaçar-se als centres educatius, que han estat tancats a causa del confinament decretat en la majoria de països. De manera imprevista, les institucions educatives s'han vist obligades a adoptar solucions d'emergència, migrant cap a models de docència no presencial remota, que han permès parar el cop. A partir d'aquesta experiència, es comença a valorar si l'educació en línia pot ser una aliada vàlida que permeti el desenvolupament de solucions híbrides en els nostres sistemes educatius. La resposta és que sí, encara que el que s'ha fet fins ara no és, pròpiament, educació en línia. Aquest llibre presenta un seguit de propostes per a millorar l'educació en línia i per a fer front a futures situacions de presencialitat discontínua que puguin donar-se, degudes a possibles nous confinaments, totals o parcials. Vol ser un instrument de suport per a tots els professionals de l'educació que necessiten o volen aprofitar al màxim el potencial transformador que ofereix l'educació en línia. The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken the foundations of our education. From one day to another, our students found impossible to attend to educational centres, which have been closed due to the lockdown established in most of the countries. Unexpectedly, educational institutions have been forced to adopt emergency solutions, migrating towards remote teaching models, the unique solution to face the situation. From this experience, education professionals start to reflect on whether online education can be a valid ally that allows the development of hybrid solutions in our educational systems. The answer is yes, but what has been done so far is not, strictly speaking, online education. This book presents a series of proposals to improve online education and to be able to face future situations of discontinuous presence that may happen, due to possible new total or partial lockdowns. It wants to be a support tool for all education professionals who need or want to take full advantage of the transformative potential that online education can provide.
