Despite increasing recognition of the importance of the multiple dimensions of biodiversity, including functional or genetic diversity as well as species diversity, most conservation studies on ecosystem service-providing insects focus on simple diversity measures such as species richness and abundance. In contrast, relatively little is known about the genetic diversity and resilience of pollinators or natural enemies of crop pests to population fragmentation and local extinction. The genetic diversity and demographic dynamics of remnant populations of beneficial insects in agricultural areas can be a useful indicator proving additional insights into their conservation status, but this is rarely evaluated. Although gene flow between agricultural and seminatural areas is key to maintaining genetic diversity, its extent and directionality remain largely unexplored. Here, we apply a pan-European sampling protocol to quantify genetic diversity and structure and assess gene flow between agricultural and nearby seminatural landscapes in populations of two key ecosystem service-providing insect species, the lady beetle Coccinella septempunctata, an important predator of aphids and other crop pests, and the bee pollinator Andrena flavipes. We show that A. flavipes populations are genetically structured at the European level, whereas populations of C. septempunctata experience widespread gene flow across the continent and lack any defined genetic structure. In both species, we found that there is high genetic connectivity between populations established in croplands and nearby seminatural areas and, as a consequence, they harbor similar levels of genetic diversity. Interestingly, demographic models for some regions support asymmetric gene flow from seminatural areas to nearby agricultural landscapes. Improving our knowledge of how past climate-driven selection has acted on present-day trait population divergence is essential to understand local adaptation processes and improve our predictions of evolutionary trajectories in the face of altered selection pressures resulting from climate change. In this study, we investigated signals of selection on traits related to drought tolerance and growth rates in two Mediterranean oak species (Quercus faginea and Q. lusitanica) with contrasting distribution ranges and climatic niches. We genotyped 182 individuals from 24 natural populations of the two species using restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing and conducted a thorough functional characterization in 1602 seedlings from 21 populations cultivated in common garden experiments under contrasting watering treatments. Our genomic data revealed that both Q. faginea and Q. lusitanica have very weak population genetic structure, probably as a result of high rates of pollen-mediated gene flow among populations and large effective population sizes. In contrast, common garden experiments showed evidence of climate-driven divergent selection among populations on traits related to leaf morphology, physiology and growth in both species. Overall, our study suggests that climate is an important selective factor for Mediterranean oaks and that ecophysiological traits have evolved in drought-prone environments even in a context of very high rates of gene flow among populations.

The tropical Andes are one of the most important biodiversity hotspots on Earth, yet our understanding of how their biotas have responded to Quaternary climatic oscillations is extraordinarily limited and the alternative models proposed to explain their demographic dynamics have been seldom formally evaluated. Here, we test the hypothesis that the interplay between the spatial configuration of geographical barriers to dispersal and elevational displacements driven by Quaternary cooling–warming cycles has shaped the demographic trajectories of montane oak forests (Quercus humboldtii) from the Colombian Andes. Specifically, we integrate genomic data and environmental niche modelling at fine temporal resolution to test competing spatially explicit demographic and coalescent models, including scenarios considering (i) isotropic gene flow through the landscape, (ii) the hypothetical impact of contemporary barriers to dispersal (i.e., inter‐Andean valleys), and (iii) distributional shifts of montane oak forests from the Last Glacial Maximum to the present. Although our data revealed a marked genetic fragmentation of montane oak forests, statistical support for isolation‐with‐migration models indicates that geographically separated populations from the different Andean Cordilleras regularly exchange gene flow. Accordingly, spatiotemporally explicit demographic analyses supported a model of flickering connectivity, with scenarios considering isotropic gene flow or currently unsuitable habitats as persistent barriers to dispersal providing a comparatively worse fit to empirical genomic data. Overall, these results emphasize the role of landscape heterogeneity on shaping spatial patterns of genomic variation in montane oak forests, rejecting the hypothesis of genetic continuity and supporting a significant impact of Quaternary climatic oscillations on their demographic trajectories., Comisión Europea (CE). The study of the genetic makeup and demographic fate of alien species is essential to understand their capacity to recover from founder effects, adapt to new environmental conditions and, ultimately, become invasive and potentially damaging. Here, we employ genomic data to gain insights into key demographic processes that might help to explain the extraordinarily successful invasion of the Western Mediterranean region by the North American boatman Trichocorixa verticalis (Hemiptera: Corixidae). Our analyses revealed the genetic distinctiveness of populations from the main areas comprising the invasive range and coalescent-based simulations supported that they originated from independent introductions events probably involving different source populations. Testing of alternative demographic models indicated that all populations experienced a strong bottleneck followed by a recent and instantaneous demographic expansion that restored a large portion (>30%) of their ancestral effective population sizes shortly after introductions took place (<60 years ago). Considerable genetic admixture of some populations suggest that hypothetical barriers to dispersal (i.e., land and sea water) are permeable to gene flow and/or that they originated from introductions involving multiple lineages. This study demonstrates the repeated arrival of propagules with different origins and short time lags between arrival and establishment, emphasizing the extraordinary capacity of the species to recover from founder effects and genetically admix in invaded areas. This can explain the demonstrated capacity of this aquatic insect to spread and outcompete native species once it colonizes new suitable regions. Future genomic analyses of native range populations could help to infer the genetic makeup of introduced populations and track invasion routes.

Postdivergence gene flow can trigger a number of creative evolutionary outcomes, ranging from the transfer of beneficial alleles across species boundaries (i.e., adaptive introgression) to the formation of new species (i.e., hybrid speciation). Although neutral and adaptive introgression has been broadly documented in nature, hybrid speciation is assumed to be rare and the evolutionary and ecological context facilitating this phenomenon still remains controversial. Through combining genomic and phenotypic data, we evaluate the hypothesis that the dual feeding regime (based on both scrub legumes and gramineous herbs) of the taxonomically controversial grasshopper Chorthippus saulcyi algoaldensis resulted from hybridization between the sister taxa C. binotatus (that exclusively feeds on scrub legumes) and C. saulcyi (that only feeds on gramineous herbs). Genetic clustering analyses and inferences from coalescent-based demographic simulations confirm that C. s. algoaldensis represents an independently evolving lineage and support the ancient hybrid origin of this taxon (about 1.4 Ma), which sheds light on its uncertain phylogenetic position and might explain its broader trophic niche. We propose a Pleistocene hybrid speciation model where range shifts resulting from climatic oscillations can promote the formation of hybrid swarms and facilitate their long-term persistence through geographic isolation from parental forms in topographically complex landscapes.

Aim: Cold-adapted biotas from mid-latitudes often show small population sizes, harbour low levels of local genetic diversity and are highly vulnerable to extinction due to ongoing climate warming and the progressive shrinking of montane and alpine ecosystems. In this study, we use a suite of analytical approaches to infer the demographic processes that have shaped contemporary patterns of genomic variation in Omocestus bolivari and Omocestus femoralis, two narrow-endemic and red-listed Iberian grasshoppers forming highly fragmented populations in the sky island archipelago of the Baetic System. Location: South-eastern Iberia. Methods: We quantified genomic variation in the two focal taxa and coupled ecological niche models and a spatiotemporally explicit simulation approach based on coalescent theory to determine the relative statistical support of a suite of competing demographic scenarios representing contemporary population isolation (i.e. a predominant role of genetic drift) versus historical connectivity and post-glacial colonization of sky islands (i.e. pulses of gene flow and genetic drift linked to Pleistocene glacial cycles). Results: Inference of spatial patterns of genetic structure, environmental niche modelling and statistical evaluation of alternative species-specific demographic models within an approximate Bayesian computation framework collectively supported genetic admixture during glacial periods and post-glacial colonization of sky islands, rather than long-term population isolation, as the scenario best explaining the current distribution of genomic variation in the two focal taxa. Although the pervasiveness of intraspecific wing‐size polymorphism and transitions to flightlessness have long captivated biologists, the demographic outcomes of shifts in dispersal ability are not yet well understood and have been seldom studied at early stages of diversification. Here, we use genomic data to infer the consequences of dispersal‐related trait variation in the taxonomically controversial short‐winged (Chorthippus corsicus corsicus) and long‐winged (Chorthippus corsicus pascuorum) Corsican grasshoppers. Our analyses revealed lack of contemporary hybridization between sympatric long‐ and short‐winged forms and phylogenomic reconstructions supported their taxonomic distinctiveness, rejecting the hypothesis of intraspecific wing polymorphism. Statistical evaluation of alternative models of speciation strongly supported a scenario of Pleistocene divergence (<1.5 Ma) with ancestral gene flow. According to neutral expectations from differences in dispersal capacity, historical effective migration rates from the long‐ to the short‐winged taxon were threefold higher than in the opposite direction. Although populations of the two taxa present a marked genetic structure and have experienced parallel demographic histories, our coalescent‐based analyses suggest that reduced dispersal has fueled diversification in the short‐winged C. c. corsicus. Collectively, our study illustrates how dispersal reduction can speed up geographical diversification and increase the opportunity for allopatric speciation in topographically complex landscapes.

Alpine biotas are paradigmatic of the countervailing roles of geographical isolation and dispersal during diversification. In temperate regions, repeated distributional shifts driven by Pleistocene climatic oscillations produced both recurrent pulses of population fragmentation and opportunities for gene flow during range expansions. Here, we test whether a model of divergence in isolation vs. with gene flow is more likely in the diversification of flightless alpine grasshoppers of the genus Podisma from the Iberian Peninsula. The answer to this question can also provide key insights about the pace of evolution. Specifically, if the data fit a divergence in isolation model, this suggests rapid evolution of reproductive isolation. Genomic data confirm a Pleistocene origin of the species complex, and multiple analytical approaches revealed limited asymmetric historical hybridization between two taxa. Genomic-based demographic reconstructions, spatial patterns of genetic structure and range shifts inferred from palaeodistribution modelling suggest severe range contraction accompanied by declines in effective population sizes during interglacials (i.e., contemporary populations confined to sky islands are relicts) and expansions during the coldest stages of the Pleistocene in each taxon. Although limited hybridization during secondary contact leads to phylogenetic uncertainty if gene flow is not accommodated when estimating evolutionary relationships, all species exhibit strong genetic cohesiveness. Our study lends support to the notion that the accumulation of incipient differences during periods of isolation were sufficient to lead to lineage persistence, but also that the demographic changes, dispersal constraints and spatial distribution of the sky islands themselves mediated species diversification in temperate alpine biotas.

Although the genetic consequences of contemporary landscape composition and range shifts driven Pleistocene climatic oscillations have been studied fairly well in alpine organisms, we know much less about how these factors have shaped the demography of taxa with broader climatic niches and distributions. Here, we use high-throughput sequencing data to study the processes underlying spatial patterns of genomic variation in Omocestus panteli (Bolívar, 1887) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), a common Iberian grasshopper distributed across numerous habitat types and a wide elevational range (from sea level to >2,000 m). Although the species is broadly distributed, our analyses support that its contemporary populations show significant genetic fragmentation that dates back to the last glacial period. Accordingly, spatially explicit testing of alternative gene flow scenarios and demographic inference analyses revealed that genetic differentiation between populations and their long-term effective population sizes are best explained by the spatial configuration of environmentally suitable habitats during the last glacial maximum (ca. 21 ka). At that time, the species experienced net demographic expansions but interspersed unsuitable areas might have disrupted gene flow and created opportunity for geographical diversification. Collectively, our analyses indicate that the genetic makeup of contemporary populations is not well explained by current environmental factors or geographical barriers to dispersal but mostly reflects genetic fragmentation during the last glacial period followed by postglacial admixture among previously isolated gene pools. Taken together, these results support that the Pleistocene ‘species pump’ model might be also useful in explaining demographic dynamics and geographical diversification in taxa characterized by broad climatic niches.

[Aim]: Although thermophilous and arid-dwelling relict biotas constitute a singular component of European biodiversity of high conservation value, we still largely ignore their biogeographic history. In this study, we investigate the geographical diversification of the Maghrebian-Levantine crested grasshopper and its colonization of semiarid habitats of southeastern Iberia to gain insights into the historical processes underlying the biogeographic connections between northern African and southern European arid-dwelling faunas. [Location]: Mediterranean region. [Taxon]: Crested grasshoppers Dericorys millierei and Dericorys carthagonovae (Orthoptera: Dericorythidae). [Methods]: We used genomic data (ddRAD-seq) to quantify the genetic structure of populations, infer the phylogenetic relationships among them, estimate divergence times, and elucidate the demographic processes accompanying the colonization of southeastern Iberia. Genomic-based inferences were interpreted in the light of eustatic sea-level reconstructions and species’ range dynamics derived from palaeodistribution modelling at fine temporal resolution. [Results]: Clustering analyses showed a strong genetic structure and phylogenomic inference revealed that Iberian populations are nested within a Maghrebian clade. Molecular dating analyses indicated that all lineages diverged during the Pleistocene (<1.6 Ma), with point estimates coinciding with glacial periods and the accompanying sea level drops. According to palaeodistribution modelling, the species experienced severe range contractions during the coldest stages of the Pleistocene. [Aim]: Two main biogeographical hypotheses have been proposed to explain the Mediterranean‐Turanian disjunct distributions exhibited by numerous steppe‐dwelling organisms, namely (a) dispersal during the Messinian salinity crisis (∼5.96–5.33 Ma) followed by range fragmentation and vicariance, and (b) Pleistocene colonization and recent processes of population subdivision (<2 Ma).
