Abstract

Similarity search is a central problem in domains such as information management and retrieval or data analysis. Many similarity search algorithms are designed or specifically adapted to metric distances. Thus, they are unsuitable for alternatives like the cosine distance, which has become quite common, for example, with embeddings and in text mining. This paper presents GDASC (General Distributed Approximate Similarity search with Clustering), a general framework for distributed approximate similarity search that accepts arbitrary distances. This framework can build a multilevel index structure, by selecting a clustering algorithm, the number of prototypes in each cluster and any arbitrary distance function. As a result, this framework effectively overcomes the limitation of using metric distances and can address situations involving cosine similarity or other non-standard similarity measures. Experimental results using k-medoids clustering in GDASC with real datasets confirm the applicability of this approach for approximate similarity search, improving the performance of extant algorithms for this purpose.

Abstract

Similarity search based on a distance function in metric spaces is a fundamental problem for many applications. Queries for similar objects lead to the well-known machine learning task of nearest-neighbours identification. Many data indexing strategies, collectively known as Metric Access Methods (MAM), have been proposed to speed up queries for similar elements in this context. Moreover, since exact approaches to solve similarity queries can be complex and time-consuming, alternative options have appeared to reduce query execution time, such as returning approximate results or resorting to distributed computing platforms. In this paper, we introduce MASK (Multilevel Approximate Similarity search with $k$-means), an unconventional application of the $k$-means algorithm as the foundation of a multilevel index structure for approximate similarity search, suitable for metric spaces. We show that inherent properties of $k$-means, like representing high-density data areas with fewer prototypes, can be leveraged for this purpose. An implementation of this new indexing method is evaluated, using a synthetic dataset and a real-world dataset in a high-dimensional and high-sparsity space. 28. Evaluating arbitration and conflict resolution mechanisms in the Spanish Wikipedia

Abstract

In open collaborative projects like Wikipedia, interactions among users can produce tension and misunderstandings. Complex disputes require more sophisticated mechanisms of conflict resolution. In this paper, we examine the case of the Spanish Wikipedia and its Arbitration Committee, known as CRC, over its two years of activity. We postulate that the high percentage of rejections of cases presented by non-administrators, the lack of diversity inside the committee (composed only by administrators), and the high number of cases involving administrators played a central role in its eventual downfall. We conclude that mechanisms that fail to acknowledge the ecosystem they are part of cannot succceed. Therefore, further research is needed to determine if granting more decision-making power to non-administrators may lead to more effective conflict resolution mechanisms., Comment: 4 pages, 4 tables

Abstract

Question-&-Answer (QA) websites have emerged as efficient platforms for knowledge sharing and problem solving. In particular, the Stack Exchange platform includes some of the most popular QA communities to date, such as Stack Overflow. Initial metrics used to assess the performance of these communities include summative statistics like the percentage of resolved questions or the average time to receive and validate correct answers. However, more advanced methods for longitudinal data analysis can provide further insights on the QA process, by enabling identification of key predictive factors and systematic comparison of performance across different QA communities. In this paper, we apply survival analysis to a selection of communities from the Stack Exchange platform. 30. Los entornos de aprendizaje y el éxito escolar en Latinoamérica

Abstract

This article finds the relationship that learning environments have on school success, in the Latin American countries participating in the International Program for Student Assessment (PISA), of the year 2018, estimating the Educational Production Function. Subsequently, the Shorrocks-Shapley decomposition is applied to determine which of the dimensions associated with learning has a greater weight in the heterogeneity of school success. It was found that the best school environments favor school success, while when the school climate in the classroom is "not the best", performance drops. It was calculated, for the group of Latin American countries, that, on average, learning environments explain the variability of school success in 29.09% for mathematics, 28.01% for reading and 28.71% for science, being the dimension that to a greater extent explains this heterogeneity., Cet article trouve la relation que les environnements d'apprentissage ont sur la réussite scolaire, dans les pays d'Amérique latine participant au Programme international pour le suivi des acquis des élèves (PISA), en 2018, en estimant la fonction de la production éducative. Par la suite, la décomposition de Shorrocks-Shapley est appliquée pour déterminer laquelle des dimensions associées aux apprentissages a le plus de poids dans l'hétérogénéité de la réussite scolaire. Il a été constaté que les meilleurs environnements scolaires favorisent la réussite scolaire, alors que lorsque le climat scolaire au sein des salles de classe « n'est pas le meilleur », les performances diminuent. Il a été calculé, pour le groupe des pays d'Amérique latine, qu'en moyenne, les environnements d'apprentissage expliquent la variabilité de la réussite scolaire dans 29,09% pour les mathématiques, 28,01% pour la lecture et 28,71% pour les sciences, étant la dimension qui explique le plus cette hétérogénéité, Este artículo encuentra la relación que tienen los entornos de aprendizaje sobre el éxito escolar en los países latinoamericanos participantes en el Programa Internacional para la Evaluación de Estudiantes (PISA, por sus siglas en inglés), del año 2018, estimando la función de producción educativa. Posteriormente, se aplica la descomposición de Shorrocks-Shapley para determinar cuál de las dimensiones asociadas al aprendizaje, tiene un mayor peso en la heterogeneidad del éxito escolar. Se encontró que los mejores ambientes escolares favorecen el éxito escolar, mientras que, cuando el clima escolar dentro de las aulas de clase “no es el mejor”, el desempeño baja. Se calculó, para el conjunto de países de América Latina que, en promedio, los entornos de aprendizaje explican la variabilidad del éxito escolar en 29,09% para matemáticas, en 28,01% para lectura y en 28,71% para ciencias, siendo la dimensión que en mayor medida explica esta heterogeneidad.

Abstract

The article analyzes Article 4, letter i), of Law 20.169, which sanctions the establishment or application of “contractual clauses” and abusive “behaviors” as acts of unfair competition to the detriment of suppliers. The purpose of the text is to explore its application through the construction of criteria that allow config­uring the offense. To achieve this, it is proposed that the competitive relationship is not a prerequisite for the application of the law, and the diversion of clientele is not a requirement. Subsequently, it is argued that it should be integrated with Article 16, letter g), of Law 19.496, which establishes the general parameters of abusiveness., El presente trabajo analiza el artículo 4 letra i) de la Ley 20.169, que sanciona como acto de competencia desleal el establecimiento o aplicación de “cláusulas contractuales” y “conductas” abusivas en desmedro de los proveedo­res. El propósito del texto es buscar su aplicación, a través de la construcción de criterios que permitan configurar el ilícito. Para ello, se propone que la relación de competencia no es un presupuesto de aplicación de la ley, y que la desviación de clientela no es requisito exigible. Luego, se sostiene que debería integrarse con el artículo 16 letra g) de la Ley 19496, que establece los parámetros generales de abusividad.

Abstract

This paper presents GMASK, a general algorithm for distributed approximate similarity search that accepts any arbitrary distance function. GMASK requires a clustering algorithm that induces Voronoi regions in a dataset and returns a representative element for each region. Then, it creates a multilevel indexing structure suitable for large datasets with high dimensionality and sparsity, usually stored in distributed systems. Many similarity search algorithms rely on $k$-means, typically associated with the Euclidean distance, which is inappropriate for specific problems. Instead, in this work we implement GMASK using $k$-medoids to make it compatible with any distance and a wider range of problems. Experimental results verify the applicability of this method with real datasets, improving the performance of alternative algorithms for approximate similarity search. In addition, results confirm existing intuitions regarding the advantages of using certain instances of the Minkowski distance in high-dimensional datasets.
