DANTE is a new Digital Pulse Processor (DPP) developed for fluorescence detectors, like silicon drift detectors (SDDs) or High Purity Germanium detectors (HPGe), used in X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) experiments at synchrotron facilities. Its main features are its optimal energy resolution and peak stability for detector count rate values up to 1-2 Mcps, and its enhanced rejection of pile-up events. In this paper, we present the first complete evaluation of DANTE performance in SOLEIL synchrotron facility. One of the main challenges in Environmental sciences is the identification and chemical evolution of polluting traces (e.g, cadmium or antimony) in soil, which requires long acquistion times for accurate measurements at synchrotron facilities. In this context, the potential of a new generation multi-element germanium detectors to identify traces at 0.1-1~ppm in a reasonable time has been studied using Allpix Squared framework. This code has been customized to include the three dimensional electric and weighting field maps generated by COMSOL Multiphysics software, and several features to model the sample environment at SOLEIL synchrotron and the signal response of a germanium detector equipped with a Digital Pulse Processor (DPP). The full simulation chain has been validated by experimental data from SAMBA beamline of SOLEIL synchrotron. The International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF), presently in its Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities (EVEDA) phase under the frame of the Broader Approach Agreement between Europe and Japan, accomplished in summer 2013, on schedule, its EDA phase with the release of the engineering design report of the IFMIF plant, which is here described. Many improvements of the design from former phases are implemented, particularly a reduction of beam losses and operational costs thanks to the superconducting accelerator concept, the re-location of the quench tank outside the test cell (TC) with a reduction of tritium inventory and a simplification on its replacement in case of failure, the separation of the irradiation modules from the shielding block gaining irradiation flexibility and enhancement of the remote handling equipment reliability and cost reduction, and the water cooling of the liner and biological shielding of the TC, enhancing the efficiency and economy of the related sub-systems. In addition, the maintenance strategy has been modified to allow a shorter yearly stop of the irradiation operations and a more careful management of the irradiated samples. The design of the IFMIF plant is intimately linked with the EVA phase carried out since the entry into force of IFMIF/EVEDA in June 2007.

X-rays spectroscopy experiments at synchrotron facilities were limited for many years by the maximum input-count rate and the signal-to-background ratio of germanium fluorescence detectors. These limitations are related to the germanium semiconductor device, the sensor configuration and its response to the incident X-ray flux at different energies. In order to understand and quantify such limitations, physics simulation of the detector response is a powerful tool to provide guidelines for designing, prototyping and improving detectors, as well as modelling experimental environments, which reduces time and cost of development. For this purpose, a first complete and operational simulation chain based on Allpix Squared framework is presented, customized to multi-element germanium detectors and combined with three-dimensional simulations of the electric field and the weighting potential, based on COMSOL Multiphysics. Based on this simulation chain, a quantification of charge sharing effect as well as signal-to-background ratio at different beam energies has been made for a germanium detector equipped with and without collimator. In addition, two experimental measurements have been performed on the SAMBA beamline at SOLEIL synchrotron. This article describes BabyIAXO, an intermediate experimental stage of the International Axion Observatory (IAXO), proposed to be sited at DESY. IAXO is a large-scale axion helioscope that will look for axions and axion-like particles (ALPs), produced in the Sun, with unprecedented sensitivity. BabyIAXO is conceived to test all IAXO subsystems (magnet, optics and detectors) at a relevant scale for the final system and thus serve as prototype for IAXO, but at the same time as a fully-fledged helioscope with relevant physics reach itself, and with potential for discovery. The BabyIAXO magnet will feature two 10 m long, 70 cm diameter bores, and will host two detection lines (optics and detector) of dimensions similar to the final ones foreseen for IAXO. BabyIAXO will detect or reject solar axions or ALPs with axion-photon couplings down to $g_{a\gamma} \sim 1.5 \times 10^{-11}$ GeV$^{-1}$, and masses up to $m_a\sim 0.25$ eV. BabyIAXO will offer additional opportunities for axion research in view of IAXO, like the development of precision x-ray detectors to identify particular spectral features in the solar axion spectrum, and the implementation of radiofrequency-cavity-based axion dark matter setups., Comment: 77 pages, 49 figures. Magnetic nanoparticles are promising systems for biomedical applications and in particular for Magnetic Fluid Hyperthermia, a promising therapy that utilizes the heat released by such systems to damage tumor cells. We present an experimental study of the physical properties that influences the capability of heat release, i.e. the Specific Loss Power, SLP, of three biocompatible ferrofluid samples having a magnetic core of maghemite with different core diameter d= 10.2, 14.6 and 19.7 nm. The SLP was measured as a function of frequency f and intensity of the applied alternating magnetic field H, and it turned out to depend on the core diameter, as expected. The recent R&D focus on CMOS sensors with charge collection in a depleted zone has opened new perspectives for CMOS sensors as fast and radiation hard pixel devices. These sensors, labelled as depleted CMOS sensors (DMAPS), have already shown promising performance as feasible candidates for the ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk) upgrade, possibly replacing the current passive sensors. A further step to exploit the potential of DMAPS is to investigate the suitability of equipping the outer layers of the ATLAS ITk upgrade with fully monolithic CMOS sensors. This paper presents the development of a depleted monolithic CMOS pixel sensor designed in the LFoundry 150 nm CMOS technology, with the focus on design details and simulation results.

Elevated-temperature polyol-based colloidal-chemistry approach allows for the development of size-tunable (50 and 86 nm) assemblies of maghemite iso-oriented nanocrystals, with enhanced magnetization. 1H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxometric experiments show that the ferrimagnetic cluster-like colloidal entities exhibit a remarkable enhancement (4 to 5 times) in the transverse relaxivity, if compared to that of the superparamagnetic contrast agent Endorem, over an extended frequency range (1-60 MHz). The marked increase of the transverse relaxivity r2 at a clinical magnetic field strength (1.41 T), which is 405.1 and 508.3 mM-1 s-1 for small and large assemblies respectively, allows to relate the observed response to the raised intra-aggregate magnetic material volume fraction. Furthermore, cell tests with murine fibroblast culture medium confirmed the cell viability in presence of the clusters. We discuss the NMR dispersion profiles on the basis of relaxivity models to highlight the magneto-structural characteristics of the materials for improved T2-weighted magnetic resonance images., Comment: Includes supporting information

The EUDET-project was launched to create an infrastructure for developing and testing new and advanced detector technologies to be used at a future linear collider. The aim was to make possible experimentation and analysis of data for institutes, which otherwise could not be realized due to lack of resources. The magnetic properties and the spin dynamics of two molecular magnets have been investigated by magnetization and d.c. susceptibility measurements, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) over a wide range of temperature (1.6-300K) at applied magnetic fields, H=0.5 and 1.5 Tesla. The two molecular magnets consist of CuII(saldmen)(H2O)}6{FeIII(CN)6}](ClO4)38H2O in short Cu6Fe and the analog compound with cobalt, Cu6Co. It is found that in Cu6Fe whose magnetic core is constituted by six Cu2+ ions and one Fe3+ ion all with s=1/2, a weak ferromagnetic interaction between Cu2+ moments through the central Fe3+ ion with J = 0.14 K is present, while in Cu6Co the Co3+ ion is diamagnetic and the weak interaction is antiferromagnetic with J = -1.12 K. The NMR spectra show the presence of non equivalent groups of protons with a measurable contact hyperfine interaction consistent with a small admixture of s-wave function with the d-function of the magnetic ion. The NMR relaxation results are explained in terms of a single ion (Cu2+, Fe3+, Co3+) uncorrelated spin dynamics with an almost temperature independent correlation time due to the weak magnetic exchange interaction. We conclude that the two molecular magnets studied here behave as single molecule paramagnets with a very weak intramolecular interaction, almost of the order of the dipolar intermolecular interaction. Thus they represent a new class of molecular magnets which differ from the single molecule magnets investigated up to now, where the intramolecular interaction is much larger than the intermolecular one.

We have studied the effects of ionizing irradiation from a 60Co source and the effects of neutron irradiation on a Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor Chip(MIMOSA8). A previous report was devoted solely to the neutron-induced effects. We show that extended defects due to the neutron damage changes the distribution of the pixels pedestals. This is mainly due to the increase of the dark generation current due to the presence of deep traps in the depleted zones of the sensors. Alternatively, the exposure to ionizing irradiation increases the pedestals in a more homogeneous way, this coming from the generation of interface states at the Si/SiO2 interface supplemented by the presence of positively charged traps in the oxides. the sensors' leakage current is then increased. We discuss the results in view of increasing the radiation-hardness of the MAPS, bearing in mind that these chips were not designed with any rad-tol layout technique.
