A 9‐month‐old male Bullmastiff cross dog was presented with a history of progressive proprioceptive ataxia and behavior changes. Neuroanatomical localization was multifocal with forebrain and vestibulo‐cerebellum involvement. MRI identified moderate diffuse cerebral sulci widening, dilation of the ventricular system, and rounded, well‐defined, bilaterally symmetrical T2W, FLAIR, and T2* hyperintense intra‐axial lesions affecting the olivary nuclei. Histopathological examination was indicative of a primary mitochondrial disorder. This was confirmed following genetic analysis which identified mitochondrial fission encephalopathy with a homozygous frameshift variant in the MFF gene. This case report documents diagnostic imaging and histopathological findings not previously reported in dogs affected with mitochondrial fission encephalopathy, suggesting a different selective regional vulnerability of the neurons. A focal area of mineral attenuation is commonly observed in the diaphragmatic crura of canine patients undergoing a thoracic CT. There is no mention of this finding in either the human or veterinary medicine literature. This retrospective study evaluates 300 canine thoracic CT studies with the aim of describing the CT appearance of this finding and establishing a prevalence in a large cohort of dogs. The presence of the mineral focus and its CT characteristics, including length, attenuation, and appearance, were recorded and correlated with the patient's signalments and anamnesis. The focus was observed in 43 of 300 studies (14.3%). The most common appearance was a thin, millimetric, toothpick‐like mineral attenuating structure in the confluence of the diaphragmatic crura, just ventral to the aorta. There was no association with adjacent potentially pathological changes. A significant correlation was found between the presence of the focus and the patient's body weight (P =.03), as well as with a brachycephalic conformation (P =.03). This focus of mineralization represents a relatively common incidental finding in the canine diaphragm and has no evident association with pathology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To describe a treatment for a mandibular fracture in a guinea pig (Cavia porcellus)., Animal: A 6-month-old sexually intact male guinea pig referred for a 24-hour history of hyporexia., Clinical Presentation, Progression, and Procedures: Physical examination showed lateral displacement of the incisors and inflammation and crepitation during mandible lateralization. Imaging tests revealed a minimally displaced complete oblique fracture of the left mandible with fracture of the left mandibular first premolar tooth and incisor tooth., Treatment and Outcome: Conservative treatment was established by placing a chin sling (CS) to immobilize the jaw and a nasogastric tube for nutritional support. Imaging tests repeated 3 weeks later showed initial callus formation, and the conservative treatment was discontinued. Follow-up examinations showed appetite and progressive weight gain. Five months later, the clinical crown of the left mandibular incisor was absent and a resorptive lesion on the left mandibular first premolar tooth was detected. Complete ossification of the fracture without premolar and moler teeth elongation was observed on control imaging tests. Ten months after initial examination, the patient was reportedly healthy with no signs of pain or dental disease., Clinical Relevance: Jaw fracture treatments in guinea pigs are poorly described in the literature. Surgical treatment can be challenging in this species due to its skull and dental anatomy. Although CS was originally employed to increase the congruency of premolar and molar teeth after coronal reduction, this device yielded satisfactory results as a noninvasive, inexpensive treatment of a mandibular fracture in this guinea pig. Alopecia on the back of the head was the only undesired adverse effect associated with the CS.
