The Hippoboscidae or “louse-flies” is a family of pupiparous Diptera, which in their adult stage are ectoparasites of mammals and birds. This paper presents a comprehensive review of Malagasy Hippoboscidae. In total, amongst the 213 species of this family known worldwide, 14 have been reported in Madagascar, among which six are considered as endemic to the Malagasy region. In addition, data are presented from a collection of 17 Hippoboscidae obtained from seven species of forest-dwelling birds in the “Parc National de Midongy Befotaka”, southeastern Madagascar, in 2003. The flies in this collection belong to three different species: Icosta malagasii (one), Ornithoica podicipis (ten) and Ornithoctona laticornis (six). The two former species were previously only known from single specimens in museum collections; the later species is distributed across much of the Afrotropical region and the records presented herein are the first for Madagascar. All the seven bird species are new hosts for hippoboscids. We present the first description of the male of Icosta malagasii. An illustrated dichotomous determination key of the 14 Malagasy species, based on morphological criteria only, is presented.

A survey of the louse flies species (Diptera, Hippoboscidae) in the State of Paraná, Brazil was carried out. Keys to eight genera and 15 species found are given. The following species are recorded for the first time in Paraná: Lipoptena (Lipoptenella) guimaraesi Bequaert, 1957; Stipolmetopoda legtersi Bequaert, 1955; Icosta (Ornithopomus) latifacies Bequaert, 1955; Icosta (Ornithpomus) rufiventris (Bigot, 1885); Icosta (Ardmoeca) albipennis (Say, 1823) and Olfersia bisulcata Macquart, 1847. Baryphthengus ruficapillus (Vieillot, 1818) (Momotidae) and Ciccaba virgata Carbin, 1849 (Strigidae) are new host records for Ornithoica vicina (Walker, 1849) and I. (Ardmoeca) albipennis; Chiroxiphia caudata (Shaw, 1793) and Schiffornis virescens (Lafresnaye, 1838) (Pipridae) for Ornithoctona fusciventris (Wiedemann, 1830) and Gallus gallus domesticus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Phasianidae) for S. legtersi.

The aims of this study was to provide new records of hippoboscid flies collected over an one-year period on newly captured birds from nature in the state of Paraná, Brazil. The birds were received by a wildlife center in Tijucas do Sul and the hippoboscid flies were collect by hand or by tweezers, generating a prevalence of 0.7% (16/2232) of parasitized birds. New information about distribution of hippoboscid flies on Asio clamator, Rupornis magnirostris and Athene cunicularia was reported in the state of Paraná. The Caracara plancus, Falco peregrinus and Penelope obscura are new host species for Ornithoctona erythrocephala in the state of Paraná, and the Asio stygius for Icosta rufiventris and Ornithoica vicina in Brazil. This study provided new information about hosts and distribution of hippoboscid flies in Brazilian birds. Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi fornecer novos registros de hipoboscídeos coletados durante o período de um ano em aves recém-capturadas da natureza no estado do Paraná, Brasil. As aves foram recebidas pelo Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestres localizado em Tijucas do Sul, e os hipoboscídeos foram coletados manualmente ou utilizando pinças, gerando uma prevalência de 0,7% (16/2232) de aves parasitadas. Novas informações sobre a distribuição de hipoboscídeos em Asio clamator, Rupornis magnirostris e Athene cunicularia foram observados no estado do Paraná. Caracara plancus, Falco peregrinus e Penelope obscura são novas espécies de hospedeiros para Ornithoctona erythrocephala no Paraná, e Asio stygius para Icosta rufiventris e Ornithoica vicina no Brasil. O presente estudo forneceu novas informações sobre hospedeiros e distribuição de hipoboscídeos em aves brasileiras.
