Labour is an essential feature of economic development and social change in industrialised Western countries. Yet economic and social theory as well as historical research have been underestimating its role. This volume discusses the labour vision developed by Christian Democratic-oriented parties and associations in the second half of XXI Century, in relation to the democratic and republican choice and – at the same time – capitalistic development. For a long time, Christian Democrats ruled in Western European countries, managing different choices and making policies for the labour market and the defence of workers’ rights. In addition, Christian churches paid increasing attention to social questions. The essays also emphasise the leading role of civil society (associations, movements and trade unions) in supporting labour policies. Hence, the historical readings collected here offer the opportunity to understand convergences but also differences among the experiences.

Questo volume nasce come un omaggio al lavoro di Aldo Grasso che, dagli anni Settanta, attraverso l’attività di ricerca e di didattica presso l’Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano, ma anche – dagli anni Novanta – con il quotidiano ‘corpo a corpo’ coi programmi – «i testi» – della televisione italiana, e i suoi protagonisti, ha insegnato ai suoi allievi, e al più vasto pubblico raggiunto dalle pagine del «Corriere della Sera», un approccio critico e contemporaneamente appassionato al medium saldamente centrale nella cultura italiana della seconda metà del Novecento e, ancora, del nuovo secolo. Il volume si focalizza su alcune questioni rilevanti: in che modo è possibile riflettere criticamente e fare ricerca sul ruolo di un mezzo tanto immediato e popolare quanto complesso nelle sue articolazioni e rilevante dal punto di vista culturale e sociale? Quali prospettive può adottare lo studio storiografico della televisione, e a quali fonti deve ricorrere?

The role of facial coding in body language comprehension was investigated by ERP recordings in 31 participants viewing 800 photographs of gestures (iconic, deictic and emblematic), which could be congruent or incongruent with their caption. Facial information was obscured by blurring in half of the stimuli. The task consisted of evaluating picture/caption congruence. Quicker response times were observed in women than in men to congruent stimuli, and a cost for incongruent vs. congruent stimuli was found only in men. Face obscuration did not affect accuracy in women as reflected by omission percentages, nor reduced their cognitive potentials, thus suggesting a better comprehension of face deprived pantomimes. N170 response (modulated by congruity and face presence) peaked later in men than in women. Late Positivity was much larger for congruent stimuli in the female brain, regardless of face blurring. Face presence specifically activated the right superior temporal and fusiform gyri, cingulate cortex and insula, according to source reconstruction. These regions have been reported to be insufficiently activated in face-avoiding individuals with social deficits. Overall, the results corroborate the hypothesis that females might be more resistant to the lack of facial information or better at understanding body language in face-deprived social information
